You’d been counting down the days until you could start back at the lab, full recovery had taken slightly longer than expected but you were soon sent home.

The Hannah West case was also closed relatively quickly. It was discovered that she had made a full confession on a suicide note tape that she’d been recording just as you’d arrived and it’d captured the whole incident with you and had continued recording until Greg had turned off the camera.

After Nick and yourself had made statements you were both quickly cleared to work again.

You had persuaded Nick to go back to work the day he was cleared and he did so. You’d taken some extra time off to get back on your feet and fully gain your working confidence back.

The entire time Nick had been there for you in every way he could be and now the two of you were walking side by side back into the crime lab with smiles on your faces.

“Y/N! Welcome back.” Greg’s voice had you looking away from Nick and ahead of you to the man with open arms.

“Greg” you accepted his embrace as a huge smile grew on Nick’s face seeing you with his friend. They’d all come to see you while you were at home so it wasn’t as if you hadn’t seen each other in a long time but coming back to work was a big deal and Greg and Nick both knew that more than most.

“What’s on the table for today then?” The two of you began walking down the corridor side by side as Nick followed closely behind

“We have no new cases right now but Grissom and I are running evidence from a body found at a university dorm. Cath, Sara and Nick are on a shoot up at a diner.”

You nodded your head “I guess I’m with you and Grissom. Even out the teams.”

Nick came up closer behind you “Let me take your bag to the locker room,” he took your bag from your hand and gave you a peck on the cheek “Have fun.”

You smiled as he passed you and you continued down the corridor with Greg as you spoke about the case.

The evidence was strewn across the table as you walked between the two men with a photo you’d picked up, looking over their shoulder at the evidence they’d both selected. “I think we’re looking at a tragic mistake here.” you pointed out. “Look.”

You placed the photo down between the two men and they gathered around you to look at it. After a discussion the three of you came to an agreement to go back to the victims dorm room to take another look at the scene.

Before you knew it you were back at the lab and filing the death as an accident, the victim had electrocuted themselves from bare wiring hidden by their bed frame. The shock was transferred to them through a series of conductive materials that had happened to be lying on top of it.

It was unfortunate and ordinarily very unlikely to happen but it was certainly the explanation for this case. The three of you were now back in the locker room hanging up your vests and casually talking to each other as you prepared to finish your shift.

Voices coming down the corridor had the three of you looking towards the door “Looks like we’re about to have company.” The older man spoke as he closed his locker.

“Hey!” Nick called as he stood in the doorway. “How’d your case go?” it was a question to the whole room as he walked towards you, Catherine and Sara following him inside and going to their own lockers.

“An accident.” Greg closed his locker and turned into the room “Yours?”

“The jealous ex did it” Sara spoke as Grissom handed her her bag.

All of you continued to put your jackets on and prepared to leave as smaller conversations started to take place.

“Anyone for Franks?” Greg suggested as he slowly crept towards the door.

“Franks?” you quirked your eyebrow and looked at Nick.

“She still hasn’t been?” Greg was shocked

“We haven’t exactly had the time.” Nick shook his head and put his arms out.

“It’s the diner we always eat at.” Sara explained as you looked towards her. You mouthed her a thank you.

The six of you were soon all filing into the diner and squeezing inside a booth. Bodies pressed close to fit you all in. Your orders were soon taken and all of you were bursting out in laughter.

You could definitely see the charm of the diner and how comfortable they all were inside. You looked at the old menus and pictures of past loyal customers on the walls and smiled to yourself knowing they’d probably made plenty of memories here and were happy to have been invited along.

“We’ve decided to stick around Vegas for a while” Sara announced “We think it’s for the best and we really forgot how much we loved the job.”

Nick smiled from his seat opposite you and nodded, signalling for you to tell everyone instead of him. “Same for Nick and I. I’m really enjoying it here, besides what happened, and the team here is immensely better than back in San Diego.”

“This sure is a cause for celebration.” Greg raised his mug of coffee “To the team. Back together again with new additions and a shuffle around.”

“To the team.” Everyone clinked their various liquid vessels together and took a sip.

The banter and high atmosphere continued as you ate together and before you knew it everyone’s plates were clean. Nick decided to get up to pay and Greg followed him, the two close together as Nick whispered to Greg. Nick was soon at the table with Sara and Catherine passing Greg to pay for their own meals.

You stood up and moved to Nick’s side as you waited for the others. Nick wrapped his arm around you and placed his hand on the small of your back as the whole group of you walked out to the parking lot together.

Nick stopped slightly behind you, supposedly to talk to Greg so you continued towards the car. You heard the car unlocking as you approached the passenger's side door and smiled to yourself but when your hand came to the handle you heard the car lock and a tug at the handle confirmed that Nick had locked it.

“Nick you locked it again.” turning around you were faced with a semi circle of people with Nick in the centre down on one knee with a box in his hand.

“Y/N, I wanted to do this a long time ago. Before we even came to Vegas and I very nearly did it on a couple of occasions” he opened the box as he spoke “I love you so much and couldn’t imagine my life without you. I’m sorry this isn’t a little more romantic but I wanted my family around me and it just felt like the perfect time. Y/N will you marry me?”

You looked around at the new friends you’d made before looking back at Nick. All you could do for a second was nod your head. “Yes. Of course I will!”

You took some steps towards him and opened your arms. He stood from where he was kneeling and wrapped his arms around you hugging you tightly as the crowd around you cheered.

The two of you let a couple of stray tears escape and when you pulled apart Nick’s eyes were glassy. “May I?” he gestured to the ring.

You allowed the man to slip the ring on your finger and you brought him in for a kiss, your hand going to his jaw and his falling to your waist. The kiss was lingering and deep.

“Get a room!” Greg shouted which had the two of you smiling against each other’s lips before breaking apart.

The group walked towards the two of you to embrace and congratulate you both. The happiness in the group was contagious and overwhelming. Eventually, everyone split off and allowed you and Nick to have some peace as you got into the car.

The man grabbed your hand and placed a kiss to it before letting your intertwined hands rest between the two of you. “So what happens now?” you joked.

“We’ll go home. Order some nice takeout and book reservations somewhere fancy this weekend to celebrate. We should both probably call our families too.” The man had begun pulling away from the Diner with a smile playing on his face.

“Sounds like a good plan to me.” you agreed. “I love you so much Nick.”

“I love you too. I’m sorry it wasn’t more romantic-”

“No. Don’t be. I wouldn’t change it for the world. We were surrounded by people who ywe love and care about, and they care about us too. That’s all that matters.”

“You know. I nearly did it the night before you ended up in the hospital…” his words trailed off, the two of you didn’t tend to talk about the event. Neither of you particularly liked to re-count it even if it wasn’t too sore of a subject.

“Really?” you laughed. “I guess everything happens for a reason”

“I guess so.” The two of you were soon pulling up in your driveway and Nick was leaping out of the car.

As you got out of the passenger’s side Nick had thrown your bags over his shoulder and was approaching you for a kiss. Your lips crashed together and he’d gently pushed you up against the car.

Smiling you pecked him on the lips a couple of times before pulling away “Let’s not give the neighbours a show. Sam is also probably wondering why we haven’t gone inside yet as well.” you said as you rested your hand on his chest.

The man gave you one last peck on the lips and agreed, taking your hand he walked you to the front door and unlocked it. Sam was instantly at your feet and you gave him some fuss as Nick hung up your jackets.

“God, you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met.”

“And your the most handsome guy” you closed the gap between the two of you to give him another kiss. The moment got heated, hands exploring one another as you slowly inched your way through the house.

“What about takeout?”

“That can wait.”

You smiled against the man's lips and the two of you broke apart briefly to catch your breath. The man rested his forehead to yours and brushed some of your hair behind your ear. “I love you so much Darlin’.”

“I love you more.”

Assignment Two: Abstract prints

I have been looking at the ongoing photographic project by Clarissa Bonet called ‘Stray Light’. Constructed from multiple photos Bonet’s images looks at the light cast within urban environments from different homes. The dark buildings fade into the night sky creating a constellation like image. In the city you rarely see the stars due to the light pollution, Stray Light, highlights the beauty within the city.

These photos strike differently when viewed through the current pandemic. Many people have been isolated, unable to go out or meet with friends and family. Within the photographic project Individual homes are viewed simultaneously, this creates a sense of shared experience and community. We are all alone together.

Stray Light (2014- 2018 C. Bonet)

I wanted to use Stray Light as a starting point for a series of abstract prints. breaking the print down into two key layers. The first a more expressive abstract monoprint and the second a black layer making up the buildings. The negative space allowing the monoprint to come through, like the windows in Bonet’s photographs.

Initial designs and planning

In Abstract Expressionism: The Mystical Experience. Art, Levine describes Action Painting as conveying the personality of the artist from their mark making. ‘Action Painting can be viewed as a surrender of the self and individuality.’ (Levine, 1971). I wanted to attempt to ‘think less’ for my first layer, focusing on going with my gut rather than trying to plan it. However for the printing to be successful I needed to plan the process and layers.

Abstract art and Jazz

Norman Wilfred Lewis

Arrested Fractions (Lewis, 1961), Untitled (Lewis, 1977), Cathedral (Lewis, 1950), Untitled (Urban Abstraction) (Lewis, 1949) City Night (Lewis, 1949)

Lewis was a figurative painter before becoming an abstract expressionist in the 1940s. Although a contemporary of Pollock, Klee, Rothko and Kooning, and despite his active involvement in the movement and his work being featured in exhibitions alongside many credible abstract artists, he does not appear in any of the historical narratives of the time due to being African American and a civil rights activist. Growing up during the Harlem Renaissance Lewis’s work was influenced by the city he lived in, his community and music, specifically jazz.

The vertical stokes within his work create crowds of people, the movement of music and cityscapes. The use of bright colours overlaid with black in Cathedral and City Night resonate with what I hope to achieve in my printing. In a audio recording for the MoMa curator Ann Temkin discusses the use of line within City Night (Lewis, 1949)

‘You have the buildings that line both sides of the street and indeed the very thin lines that you see going from the coloured vertical on the left to the colour vertical on the right have been interpreted as the laundry lines or perhaps the power lines that go from building to building in a city.’ (Temkin, 2011)

Lewis’ use of rectangular forms and bold shape is a stylistic aesthetic often associated with Jazz music. Developing alongside each other Abstract Expressionism and Jazz music became synonymous with one another. This has continued to inspire the creative world, more recently with animation.

I love colour, and the contrast between high colour and black. I wanted to consider this within my mono-printing keeping the movement fun and joyful.

Monoprint plates

I used A3 sheets of acetate as my printing plate and a range of materials. Traditional oil based ink, craft ink pads, water, string, thread and sequins. I had various brushes, rollers and tools to make additional marks on the plate also.

Finished first expressive print layers

I really love the expressive prints, the colours and movement within them. It made it harder to plan for the next layer as I was anxious I may ruin the prints!

First attempt at second layer

My initial idea was to continue using the acetate as a plate to create the areas of black. I cut the acetate into uneven strips, inked each piece and used various tools to remove areas to create the windows.

One of my monoprints unfortunately had some marks in the boarder from residual ink on my self-healing mat. For this reason I decided to use it as a test print. I later used it to help register the lino layer for the other prints.

Photo has been edited to try and recreate what it looks like in reality. Unfortunately it is too big to scan.

I was not happy with the result of the acetate monoprinting. The saturation of the ink was poor, so that the overall print didn’t have the impact that I wanted. For this reason I decided to change printing method and create a linoprint as I knew I would be able to create a stronger image.

The impact of the print was not what I had hoped nor what I had in my mind. I decided to do additional research into the mid-century aesthetic I had in my mind. I was influenced and inspired by mid-century, Bauhaus and California design. My subsequent research and reflections can be accessed here.

Subsequent designs

I wanted to ensure my designs weren’t static and had versatility. For this reason I chose to cut the lino into different strips, much like the weft of the Bauhaus textiles.

Usually when I carve lino I have made strict plans prior to carving. Using tracing paper I will transfer the design to stained lino often going over the line work with a pen if I’m unsure of the layer I am on. Stepping away from methodical approach to carving, for this design, I just made cuts where I felt they should go.

Reflection

These are the three prints that I have selected to submit for assignment two. A key element that links the prints is the visibility of the string imprint within the monoprinted layer. When mixing the ink for the black lino layer I cut it with extender in order to reduce the opacity of the ink, this allowed the negative of the string to be seen throughout the print. I wanted to create an abstract print based on Bonet’s photo series, depicting the glow of windows in the night sky, but also to represent the sense of connection and community. The string becomes symbolic of the ties between individuals creating something larger.

I am pleased with the prints overall from a technical standpoint however there are some parts that I need to improve upon. I’m still getting used to my new press and learning about the correct pressure. Unfortunately I didn’t notice as I was working but there are embossed marks on the outside edges of the top and bottom corners where I had additional lino (in order to prevent ‘jumping’). There are also tiny marks on a couple of the prints which I find incredibly frustrating. I have been trying to improve my practice to ensure my workspace remains clean, my hands remain clean, no enough apparently! I could use disposable gloves in order to keep everything clean however this is something I would like to avoid as it is wasteful.

Lockdown Diary Part 9

A personal account during the lockdown in the UK due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

23/03/2020 8:30pm Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister, gives a live address to the nation to, effectively, put the country on lockdown to stem the spread of the deadly coronavirus strain, Covid-19.

Many of us have been self-isolating for days but this latest development within the UK in reaction to the pandemic feels very serious and very scary. I decided to keep a simple diary and where better but online.

Day 241: Shit day at work. To cut a long story short, I could complete a task Sueanne gave to me and then I got it in the ear, including a snotty email ay 5:40pm. Pissed off.

Day 242: Had a meeting with Sueanne (our weekly 1-2-1 actually) and she was alright. I feel much better tonight. Last night I didn’t even have an appetitie - unheard of! Going to make up for that tonight, pie and loads of veg! A much better day. Ridiculously, I believe yesterday was all my own fault - I take work for granted sometimes and I let myself down by ignoring the urgency of a task just because it was Sueanne asking me to do it and she was a peer. She is now my boss, and I should respect that.

Day 243: So-so day at work. It’s strange how used to work I am after over six months on furlough. It’s been less than two months back but all the highs and lows amd frustrations are commonplace. Most importantly, it being Thursday, I cannot wait for tomorrow eveninga dn to kick back, drink and smoke. Spoke to dad this morning, he’s same as...that’s always good to know. Sugar levels have been a fucking roller coaster today, and it has really fucked me off! No salad at lunch due to them being so fucking high when I got back from my walk. It ended up being my tea. Sarted watching The Undoing...it’s OK.

Day 244: Glad it is Friday. Just cooking a (very hot) chicken madras, cracked open my first beer. Gonna eat, drink, smoke and watch a good film.

Day 245: Gold was the film I watched last night, with Matthew McConaughey and it was a good choice. I then watch a Kevin Hart stand up show on Netflix...very Eddie Murphy, very funny. I did a 12 km walk today...fucking felt it in my legs. Walked the footpath from Stoke Doyle road to Benefield road for the first time. I liked it and it comes out between Lytham Park and Wakerley Close....I posted on FB about the fact that when I move to Oundle, Clifton Drive was the last street heading out of town. Saw Becks on the walk down Benefield road, She mentioned she’s tired of lockdown. I replied that I’m tired of the virus!

Day 246: Up at 1pm, nice long walk, ordered new slippers and waterproof jacket (my Craghopper is bust again).

Day 247: I screwed up at work today, went for a (ridiculously) late lunch right when I was meant to be at an online meeting that Sueanne had reminded me about in the morning. There’s mitigation but, when push comes to shove, I fucked up and now Sueanne’s on the warpath - one more slip up and it’ll be an offical disciplinary matter.

Day 248: Suzanne wants me to troubleshoot a ticket she has in her queue, some database request for a Cork guy. It’s a test and it’s fucking me off.

I did testing for a network change tonight...8 till 11:15pm.

Elliot and Aaron cleaned the windows today. It was nice to see them.

Rita sent a couple of emails recently. Dad’s ear is all clear but Paul has got testicular cancer.

Day 249: New waterproof jacket arrived today. It’s very nice, bargain for £25 odd. Also picked up slippers from M&S food hall in Corby so, while over their, did a shop at Tesco’s...£109 mainly booze.

By the time I was back, I ended up doing my evening walk at 9.30pm!

Day 250: Leigh from Oundle Chronicle has got back to me. She (he?) has selected the photos that are going to be in the article and wants me to write a sentence on each - where they were taken and what inspited me to do so. Whether that means the stuff I wrote before is not going to be used, or not, I dunno! New slippers are OK and the new jacket is still impressing me.

Day 251: Typing on Day 252. Usual Friday, beers, meatballs, pizza, long chat with Fog. I should mention that, as we approach the end of Lockdown2 in England, Boris and his government have laid out a three tier structure for how the second lockdown will be eased. It’s caused confusion and consternation across the board. None of it affects me, still isolating like I was on day 1. Day 252: Totally forgot about my diary entry yesterday! Up at 1pm, nice long walk, nipped rong Elliots to pay for my windows, had a chat with him, Artron and Camilla - it’s so nice to socialise! Gonna make fish pie and supp a few ales. Day 253: The weekend is over way too quickly. It’s 7.30pm on Sunday as I type and I wish it wasn’t. I wish it was 7.30pm on Friday. Day 254: In a meeting, a working Zoom, with Andy Ashler in the US re: qfiniti, which Sueanne pissed me off about earlier in te day (RCI diary updated), but the meeting went well. I am desparately trying to buy an iPad on Black Monday. As usual with tech, I cannot make my mind up which to buy! Day 255: I haven’t bought an iPad....I’ll wait for the 10.2″ iPad to come down in price. I had more involvement with Andy Ashler and in the US with the Qfiniti project at work. I’m really enjoying it, it’s very technical...although I didn’t finish ‘til 6pm because of it. The Oundle Chronicle is out and an article about me and my pics is on the back page. Leigh, the editor, sent it to me electronically. It’s good. I am chuffed! Day 256: I booked some holidays today, making sure that I didn’t include any days off in the week December 14-18 (SB’s off). So, this coming Friday (4th Dec), Next Weds-Fri and Monday 21st. I know I have only been back from Furlough a couple of months but I am more than ready for some kick-back time. 1-2-1 with SB today, it was a relaxed affair, most espcially becaus eof my success thus far with the Qfiniti project - that being said, I got pretty much nowhere with it today. Ordered a couple of long sleeved Ts and a fleeced hoody from a shop called Doubletwo today, well cheap in the sale. I saw half a dozen joggers on the Milton Road blind bend tonight, oblivious to any other potential path user. I posted about it (in my own, sarcastic way) on the Oundle Chatter FB group. It was met how I’d expected plus some direct digs so I deleted it. Cowardly but, I figure, I don’t get my point across, the vast majority of joggers really don’t think they are doing anything wrong by bulldozing there way around town and, lastly, I couldn’t be bothered with the flak, and its tennis like back-and-forth!

Day 257: Got tomorrow off so worked late tying up loose ends, including the qfiniti project - fucking nuts really, making sure no one asks any questions of SB or the team, in terms of my work load, for just one day off! Still, just had tea, cracked open a beer and am watching Shaun of the Dead. Nice.

Day 258: The main thing I did today is walk. It was about 12km but felt much longer ‘cos it was wintry, pissing down, windy and slippery as fuck. And I really enjoyed it! Badge messaged me today to ask how I am and, in replying, I mentioned that I think I am becoming addicted to walking...it wasn’t a throwaway comment. Just cooked up a chilli (which I think I have ruined with a Knorr beef stock pot), and will tuck in with beers, smokes and telly. While it’s been a day off, this Friday evening will be as all others are at the moment, late, drunken and solitary fun - no doubt.

Day 259: Typing on day 260. That chilli last night was actually OK. Plus I ‘invented’ a meatball wrap - moving on from the TikTok ham and cheese wrap you fold into the toaster, I tried the same with meatballs but no fucking way could I fold it into the toaster slot (pissed up kitchen shenanigans), so I wrapped it in tin foil and heated it in the oven, Fucking delicious. I watched Shaun of the Dead. I think it’s the first time since its release and I couldn’t help thinking “zombies just aren’t like that [in real life]” Wtf?

Day 260: I was quite sensible (for a Saturday) last night, in bed by 2am, up at my alarm this morning, 10:30am. Nice long walk, taking in a new path up by Biggin Grange and took plenty of pics that turned out really good. Btw, posh lost yesterday at Portsmouth (with 2000 fans there) and they lost midweek and last weekend in the FA Cup to Chorley, at home.

Day 261: It’s freezing today...actually 0 degrees. This house is so fucking cold, even with the heating on.

Day 262: Typing on day 263. Last day of work for 5 days. Beers are in order. And a sausage casserole. Day 263: I completely forgot to do a diary entry yesterday....concentrating on starting my work break off on the right foot, which I did. As a result, I didn’t get up until 1pm. So, to stop that sort of day wasting, no beers tonight. Just got back from a shop (£90 in Tesco’s), trying to sort out Romiley’s Christmas present, then something to eat (more sausage casserole) and a early, sober night.

Day 264: So, after abstinence last night, I was up before 11am and did a walk that included the track from Benefield Road to Monson Way past Park Wood. It was fucking hard work due to mud. I have lost coumd the amount of times I nearly slipped right over. Throw into that a hypo, the 12-13km walk was tough. Sorted out Romiley’s present (guitar stand, music stand and guitar exercises book). Took soime nice photos today as well which I’ve prepared and shared. No booze today/tonight either. Some break, a younger me would say!

Day 265: Friday, and I am typing with a beer, balti on the hob and I am just gonna choose a film and roll a single skinner. I am knackered. Up at 10am, cleaned the hall and stairs after a 10km walk. Also, I spoke with dad who is, as always, fine.

Time to make up for the last two sober nights.

Day 266: I am typing this on day 267. So drunk last night I left nearll a full can of beer and went to bed in my jogging bottoms and t-shirt. I have had a day off from any exercise at all which felt very odd. A few beers and watched Snatch. Day 267: While I was nowhere near drunk last night, due to sleeping in late (2pm) I was up ‘til 3am watching TikTok so today I struggled out of bed at just before 1pm. Watch the start of the season’s final GP (Verstappen won from pole and it was boring af), back on the exercising including a 9km walk. Back to work tomorrow which I feel totally conflicted about! Posh won yesterday at home to Rochdale (with the allowed 2000 fans) 4-1 including a 17 minute first half hatrick from Jonson Clarke-Harris.

Day 268: Back to work - Sueanne’s off and it’s the first day I’ve been at work with Jon in charge which involves a daily ‘SUMO’ (whatever that acronym stands for?) at 9.30am every day. I am still involved with te qfiniti upgrade project which seems to have taken a step backwards in the 3 days I had off, so I was working until gone 9.30pm! I have decided to do a quiz, hopefully for Christmas, whereby I don’t want the actual answers (to 25 particular questions, all with a common theme in the answer), merely an omitted question!

Day 269: Stand Up Meeting Online. SUMO. Ian Bird told me. I might struggle with double Y for my quiz. Work was OK, more Qfiniti stuff. Posh drew away to MK 1-1. Posh were 0-1 up but Lincs lost at home. I can’t undertsand why that pleases me so....oh, yeah I can Steve Dee.

Day 270: Struggling to order Dad and Rita booze for Christmas without it being a Morrison’s delivery that I can do through Amazon Prime. That would be OK but it’s just a bit clinical! Meanwhile, now I am paying for Prime, and they are showing some Premiership games (for example, tonight I watched Liverpool v. Spurs (2-1), I really have to contact Sky - I am paying £71pm atm! Sam posted pic of her Christmas tree but mentioned how she’s finding it hard to get in the spirit - Paul has testicular cancer and the outlook is bleak - fuck know’s what she’s going through with all that, trying to shield Romiley from the worst without lying!

TAYLOR SWIFT has just arrived in hollywood and the TWENTY-NINE year old SINGER is already causing a stir! the CISFEMALE was seen leaving lax in a hurry, but not before the paparazzi could snap a few stunning photos ! from the looks of it, SHE/HER is going to be the new talk of the town.

i’ve been playing taylor on and off for too long of a time, tbh — the fun of bringing her into a new group is that i get to kinda reinvent her and i never try to play the same taylor twice which is sksksks fun ! the only thing that stays the same across the board is that my taylor lives by the quote “be like a snake: be nice to people until they step on you”

taylor’s bisexual, she’s not openly out to anyone beyond her immediate family and select friends and has no plans to come out any time soon. due to that, her public relationship history in the sake of this rp is very, very grey & i’m pretty much throwing it all to the wind until we accept said faces in the group & we have the chance to plot ! yeehaw creative liberties !

taylor is incredibly business-oriented; she doesn’t like to use the word calculating to describe her but there is an absolute method to her madness and she’s whip smart. she, for the most part, knows exactly what she is doing when she does it. as the years have gone by, she has strayed from the whimsical, carefree approach on life and everything she does is mapped out to a T. she’s iron-clad in her defenses and every move she makes has contingency plans for contingency plans. i think of it like this: her 1989 era was very rigid and impersonal after the release of the album. during the drama of 2016 taylor took her space and because she was out of the public eye, had to learn how to rework her life without such rigid structure. the reputation era was very blase and ‘i don’t give a fuck’ and the lover era is veering back into that commercial, "faces on, people !!” tone — because of all this, she can sometimes come across as cold and detached to the reality around her ? she’s in tune with the world but sometimes she doesn’t get that she has to switch the lens of ‘this is a business move’ into like, real life

*off key* truuuuUUUST issUUUUUES ! she’s super fucking guarded. she makes it seem like she lets people in very easily but that’s not necessarily the case, she’s just very good at making people feel accepted and included

forgiveness is easier said than done with her. she’ll say that she forgives you but her actions will scream “hi i’m holding a grudge”

if you have taylor in your corner, you have her there for the long run, period. the only time she willingly walks away is if she feels unwelcome or disagrees with something that’s been done/said (most usually towards her lmao)

i know labels died in like, 2015, but one of my favorites that i’d use to sum my t up in one word is cosmogyral — the definition of the word cosmogyral is ‘whirling around the universe.’ she’s never content with stagnancy, she likes to constantly be thinking and doing and moving and striving to be all the things, essentially. taylor’s a very strategic, take no prisoners kinda girl; she’s also a huge dreamer with a big heart that often gets shadowed by all her steel that she keeps up. she tends to live in her head quite a bit, which comes at its costs. the big part that i usually read into with the cosmogyral is that they are incredibly volatile, they’re easy to flip or turn in their moods and are pretty fickle. taylor is the type of person who will change her mind a lot about something and she’ll be hella stubborn about it every time as if she didn’t feel some other type of way five minutes ago

positive traits include: sage, silver-tongued, fastidious, idealistic, intrepid, driven, hopeless romantic, affectionate, fervid, convival, generally a cinnamon roll (unless u invoke the Sin)

negative traits include: convoluted, self-isolating, sybaritic, clinical, somewhat neurotic, opinionated, lives with her finger on the trigger, vindictive, still sometimes kinda naive

i try not to write taylor as a caricature of herself ? because sometimes i feel like people do ? where the muse takes me is where the muse takes me and i probably won’t have a single explanation for it so this is me apologizing in advance !

anyways, i’ll shut up here ( otherwise i will go on forEVER ) so i can go grab a quick bite for dinner and then dedicate my evening to loving up your starters and babies ic & ooc ! ik it can sometimes be intimidating to message a whole ass stranger but if you wanna plot or just talk ooc, give this actual novella a like and as if by magic, i shall appear in your ims for all the things ! like i said above, i’m really excited to write with everyone and AHHHH I CAN’T WAIT love y’all already x

Christmas is almost here & one of my most favorite things about the holidays, or any special moment really, is selecting my outfit! There’s just something so fun to me about knowing what you’re going to be wearing ahead of time, putting some thought into the look & feel of it, setting it aside, & feeling fancy for a day. I am all about comfort, class, trends, & personal style whenever I dress up, & thanks to Macy’s found the perfect holiday outfit that has all of those elements! Every great outfit has a beginning, so let’s start there!

Earlier this week I went to my local Macy’s & met with Suzi Royls who works in the Macy’s Mysylist personal shopping center. I have worked with Suzi quite a few times this past year in order to pick out outfits for collabs like Go Red For Women last winter, & Summer Into Fall transitional pieces just a few months ago. She is always so kind & helpful & knows where all the brands are located. Best part? Now that we’ve worked together for over a year, she knows my style, the brands I will or won’t wear, & my size too! Together we walk around the Women’s Department at Macy’s discussing & looking for the perfect look that we both have in mind. This go round was no different!

When I came in this past summer we honestly had a hard time finding items & I was worried that would happen again. The only reason last time was so difficult was mainly because the summer trends that were on display & the sizes on the floor just weren’t working with my body. It was hard to find pieces I loved & ones that looked good on me, but after two hours (no joke), we did it. This time though I was more confident in finding itms that worked because winter & sweaters are a best friend to girl like me….hello baggy sweater trends! I was set on picking out a new seater for my holiday look & so once we found a Free People one that I liked in two colors we were set on trying to find some flared or stretchy pants that I could feel comfortable in. And just before we headed into the private fitting rooms that the Mystylist center offers, we found the most perfect velvet ones…

I headed to try on the first look, & we were sold. It was perfect! Everything fit, it all looked good, & even though I was slightly unsure about the pants, I knew we wouldn’t find anything better! We ended up getting this Free People Bell Sleeve Sweater in light grey. It also comes in a pretty forest green that I really loved, & of course black, which I’m surprised I didn’t select. The dreamy I.N.C. Velvet Ruffled Slit Pants looked absolutely perfect on my body & they went with the crop length of the sweater so well. I knew the pants were a bit unlike anything I had worn before, but I also know that I’m not afraid to rock new things & that the style would grow on me. Suzi & I were so stoked that we found this holiday outfit in literally minutes! I’d be pairing the duo with my black velvet booties that I got earlier this year, & one of my handheld brown leather clutches from my bag collection.

Not sure about these pants of this sweater combo? No worries. I’ve got some similar ideas for what else you can find & wear from Macy’s this holiday season. Velvet is a perfect fabric to wear during the holidays. It’s comfortable, yet it looks expensive & chic. Try these Red Velvet Pajama Pants I would totally rock during the day. Just because there is a label telling you what the item is, or when to wear it, doesn’t you have to follow their rules! Fashion is rebellious, there are no real rules. I’d pair those pants with this Free People Fluffy Turtleneck Sweater in black & tuck it in on one side on the front. Tucking shirts fully o half way in or tying them in knots on the side totally transform a look & help to define your waist that your shape doesn’t get lost in the fabric.

For the holidays, you can never go wrong with adding a black booties to your collection of shoes & these Michael Kors Black Boots would go perfect with either look above. And if you’re feeling a little more fancy then these Rhinestone Booties are exactly what you need. I’m a weirdo & refuse to wear open toe shoes, flats, or any shoe that exposes the foot even just a bit during the winter months so I always wear boots with my holiday looks, but you could wear a cute stiletto with these velvet pants too! And no matter whether your holiday outfit is worn in the morning, during the day, or at night, I think a handheld clutch is a must. My favorite one’s from Macy’s is this Bow Hand Clutch or this Envelope Clutch that both come in black.

Macy’s has so many great options & brands to choose from when you’re looking for the perfect holiday look. They always have great sale sections, & even better deals for their card holders. The staff is always so friendly & helpful & I love working with their Mystylist personal shopping center that is a FREE service in order to help me find exactly what I’m looking for. The Mystylist personal shopping center is located on the first floor of the Women’s Department tucked in the corner. You can call ahead to schedule an appointment, or ask them to pull items that you are interested in buying to help make shopping easier for you. Again, it’s a free of charge service & costs you absolutely nothing! The ladies who work there & Suzi are so helpful & nice, & it makes my shopping experience at Macy’s so much easier & more enjoyable especially on the days where I can’t seem to find pieces that I love or even fit! I promise it feels so natural & like you’re shopping with a good friend!

The Rainy Day at Kopje Park Sampler

Today’s wedding takes place at Kopje Park. It’s one of my favourite places to shoot. Everything you need to photograph your formals is there – trees, an old shed, and plenty of the beautiful lakes the Okanagan is known for.

We begin our day at the Comfort Inn, in Kelowna. With detail shots. Quite the set of rings.

The dress was nothing short of amazing. It was a large and in charge, with lace everywhere. Just the way I like it.

I’m actually pretty stoked on that second shot. Nerd notes – this was stabilized on the window sill, then .5 second exposure of the bridal party walking to the suite.

Downstairs, we had a groom ready for his big day.

And upstairs, our bride was ready for hers.

If that makeup is dropping your jaw, it’s none other than Freshface Artistry in Kelowna. Everyone agreed she looked beautiful. Mom didn’t want to let go.

At Kopje, friends were handing out blankets. The venue looked more amazing than ever. Clouds obscured the rocky mountains, and the lake was especially calm.

The ceremony was beautiful. Hand written vows, and some tears from everyone. Even the groomsmen were holding back.

Formals went well. The bridal party was an absolute hoot, we had a lot of fun.

And of course, this German Shepard hung around us. Which I just loved.

I’m actually certain he’s in everyone one of the formals, and this makes me really happy.

If you haven’t guessed, I just love German Shepards. It’s part of how we met, actually. They were walking her, and I just fell in love and met her owners right after. I’m afraid this is where I’ll have to leave you, right at the reception. Which was amazing. At Okanagan Golf Club, or Quail Ridge as some of us call it.

Keep in mind, this isn’t all the photos. This is a sampler, 25 of the photos taken today. A really huge sneak peek, actually. There’s a full album coming out in about 3 weeks, though. It’s a wonderful story, mesmerizing in every moment. This is simply a sampler, a selection of a few favourites throughout the day to show you.

Blinking awake, startled by the noise, you groaned and shoved a pillow over your face not ready to be awake just yet. You had no idea what time it was, but in your mind, you were certain it was way too early to be woken up by a fretful Scottish voice ringing throughout the apartment. Jack’s curse was followed by a clatter of trays on the worktop and 30 seconds of consciousness already had you on the verge of shouting at him before pulling the cover over your head and scrunching your eyes shut until you fell asleep.

As it turned out, one quick glance at your lit up phone alerted you that it was 10:27am and you’d already received a barrage of birthday messages that confused you for a split second before you realised that it was today. How on earth had that rolled around so quickly? Against your urge to sleep a little longer, you shoved back the duvet, swung over the side of the bed and slipped your feet into your slippers before padding into the kitchen. The sight from the doorway was truly a sight to behold. Not one scrap of counter was clear of ingredients, food or mess and if Jack didn’t look so cute cutting the sponge cake in half, you’d likely have scowled at the thought of cleaning. Waiting until he’d placed the knife down, you spoke up, making your presence in the room known, “Are you having fun destroying our kitchen, babe?” The blonde swivelled to face you, half guilty at being caught and half grinning to dispel any anger you had towards him. You quirked your eyebrow at him, arms folded and half smiling in amusement. Sauntering over to you, he took your face in his hands and kissed you. “Happy birthday darlin’,” he gave you another peck and looped his arms around your waist, “did I wake you?” “Yeah, but I guess I don’t mind if you’ve gone to all this trouble, eh?” You glanced around the living room/kitchen area seeing birthday bunting and balloons hanging, helium numbers standing beside the television. The gesture made your heart swell, realising that your boyfriend had gone to all this trouble for your birthday. “’m sorry, I’ll make it up to you,” his nose brushed yours in a cheesy eskimo kiss and you giggled as his nose rubbed against your cheek, travelled your jaw and nestled into your neck, making you squirm. The rumble of your stomach broke the cute moment and Jack pulled back. His eyes scanned your face, that sincere look of adoration evident in his eyes, pulling at his cheeks and popping his dimples before he laughed at the sound you had involuntarily made, “take a seat at the breakfast counter and I’ll bring you some food over.” You snorted in response to your body’s clear way of stating its hunger and took a seat on one of the stools, watching Jack move around the kitchen and popping items onto multiple plates and pouring hot water into the awaiting mug for you, a glass of orange already sat beside it. “Right, I didn’t know what you wanted seeing as you eat anything and everything –“ Your eyebrows scrunched together as you jokingly protested, hands raised to your chest is mock offence, “Um – rude. You have to be nice to the birthday girl.” He shook his head and laughed as he picked up a few of the dishes, “As I was saying, you eat everything so I bought a selection of your favourites and then I’ll cook you something for after’s, or lunch, depends on how much fit in there.” “You’re a menace Mr Lowden, an absolute menace.” “You love me though,” he spoke sincerely, eyes smiling as he placed plates of a few different pastries and pancakes on the counter and leant over to kiss your pouting lips. “Mm, you’re lucky I do.” He rested on his folded arms, inches away from you and nodded, “Trust me, I know.” Jack teasingly grabbed a pancake off the stack and pushed away before you could swat him for stealing your food. “Where are you off to?” you asked, tearing a croissant and popping it into your mouth as Jack disappeared out of sight. “Present time.” “You surely didn’t get me anything on top of all of this?” You questioned incredulously, what else could he possibly do? “You’re kidding right?” He placed a few items beside you and took a seat on the stool on your right, sipping his coffee. Pushing away your plate, you grabbed the first item and tore off the metallic pink and white heart paper, revealing a CD inside. You turned it over, confused, it was evidently a handmade one. On the cover was a ridiculously hilarious photo of you both from your most recent trip and on the back were 22 songs, each one of them holding some reference to your relationship. “You’ve probably figured out most of the songs, and why they’re on there, but I just want you to know that I remember all the silly stuff and you can reminisce when I’m not here.” You could feel your eyes filling with tears at the simple gesture, it was heartfelt and you couldn’t believe that he actually remembered them all. It was only later that you found out he had a whole Spotify playlist that he listened to when he missed you. The next item was your favourite perfume that you’d been wearing for as long as you can remember, and that Jack commented on every time you wore it. Then came a pair of open heart earrings that matched the necklace he’d bought you last Christmas which made you light up with realisation. Lastly was an envelope which you carefully yet impatiently opened with sheer curiosity, documents for a trip away that weekend were found inside complete with hotel reservations. That was the final straw that made you cry, still utterly dumbfounded every time Jack was romantic, not because it was out of character for him, but because you couldn’t quite believe you’d found someone this incredible. “Thought you could play the mixtape on the roadtrip this weeke- hey hey hey why are you crying?” His arms folded around your shoulders and pulled you close to his chest, stoking your hair. You dabbed your eyes with your sleeve and sniffed, “I’m just really overwhelmed, this is incredible Jack, thank you so much.” “Be that as it may, pretty ladies shouldn’t cry, especially on their special day. So stop crying and eat your breakfast.” You twisted in his arms and kissed him, small pecks at his lips with a mantra of thank you, thank you, thank you. The pair of you happily tucked into the food once again, your ankles linked under your stools and sides pressed together. As he was clearing the dishes away a short while later, you looked up at him as you fastened your earrings in. “Hey Jack?” His head lifted from the sink as he ran the hot water, “Yeah babe?” “Thank you, for all this. And, well, everything really. I love you.” “Love you too birthday girl, you deserve all this and so much more.”

Carolee Schneemann at 40, Blog post at 40

This is my second in my series of blog posts on the occasion of my recent 40th birthday, and LFF’s forthcoming 10th anniversary (April 2021), writing informally around some of my favorite artists – what did they do / create their 40th year? Why do I like them so much? What’s my favorite work of theirs? Just a few words from me complemented by images, as I figure out what I’m doing at 40…at the end of each post are artworks made by me in tribute to the artist.

This week I write on Carolee Schneemann, in anticipation for my exhibit opening this week --a group show of figurative work from some stellar artists from around the area that are women. For the (brief and mask required) opening, I’ll be live scripting on a body print, some excerpts from Schneemann’s writing alongside my own musings, on women’s bodies and the importance of women making work about/with their bodies.

My first was on Judy Chicago - check it out by clicking here. Like Chicago, Schneemann was born in 1939 and during her 40th year, 1979, she created the Forbidden Action series of eight photographic documents of a guerilla performance at the Kröller-Müller Museum, Netherlands. While gallery attendants changed shifts, Schneemann quickly derobed and posed in the gallery spaces, a multilayered project protesting: 1, the fact that women are more represented in museums via nude depictions by male artists (as Guerilla Girls cleverly pointed to 10 years later in their poster print); 2, the male gaze which has primarily dictated the view of women/women’s bodies in art (and other media) (famously coined by Laura Mulvey in her 1975 essay, Visual Pleasures), and 3, both becoming the art while producing the art in an act to protest the two points above by serving as artist and model, in control of her own depiction.

It’s hard for me to articulate all the ways I love this, starting of course with all of her intent above, her sneakiness getting this done in public, her proud, unabashed 40 year old body, her confrontational reclamation of her body - all of our bodies as women. Also, I do love how she silkscreened a selection from each theme onto paper and the bright and pale colors--repetition, angles and paint lines are feminine, fierce and active. I mean, come on. How fun would this be!

I, too, create work as model and director / artist, via self portraiture and my body prints. I admit - I saw Yves Klein’s Anthropometries and came home and had to make body prints myself-as model, artist and director. Schneemann’s work often gets referred back to Klein, as making the body the brush as well. Though Schneemann herself was inspired by Jackson Pollock - she made a fictional woman artist to be inspired by, named Cezanne.

Sadly, I didn’t know of Schneemann’s work/significance when I made my first series of body prints (2012).

I did vaguely know of Interior Scroll (documentation above), her 1975 performance where she stood on a table, de-robed and announced she would read one of her her books, then dropped the book and pulled a scroll from her vagina and read from it (which years later was revealed to be a letter to a critic who wouldn’t view her films, discussing intuition and bodily processes, traditionally associated with ‘woman’, against traditionally ‘male’ notions of order and rationality). Again, her defiant, unafraid use of her body just makes me swoon--along with the heavy, multilayered, personal and feminist intent.

But really, she only wanted to be a painter. She saw her performances, films and collages as extensions of her painting. As she said, “I didn’t want to pull a scroll from my vagina and read it in public...” she moreso felt the need to challenge, educate, provoke. In “The Obscene Body/Politic:”

Projection deforms perception of the female body…political and personal violence against women is twined behind/within this stunting defeminization of history….the layers of implicit and explicit censorship constructing our social history combine with contemporary contradictions to force our radicalization...Women artists explore erotic imagery because our bodies exemplify a historic battleground--we are dismantling conventional sexual ideology and its punishing suppressions--and because our experience of our bodies has not corresponded to cultural depiction.

Damn! To write with such passionate eloquence...

Indeed, some of my favorite work of Schneemann’s is her writing - articles, books, even letters. Her writing is so fiery and on point, always aware.

In a 1975 letter to poet Clayton Eshleman, who asked her why she writes to him like a “enemy-man”:

Yes indeed I fall into treating/ writing you as if you are the enemy-man rather than the individual man who has done so much to separate himself from the wall of men I describe. My exasperation is this: you have opened, unraveled, aided, opened, unraveled, aided, and used every knot and knife in your male psyche to open, unravel, and aid and within I find old wall of man—stubborn, autocratic, severe, humorless, punishing. . . . You tear me apart in your viscera mythic stew of English anal/rancid Bacon, stoked-off Velázquez, Japanese Ukiyo-e cock strut, Soutine’s blood and grub, I BELONG TO NATURE NOT TO THESE ARTIFACTS YOU CHOOSE. I AM ELECTRICAL VULVIC BOLT IN TIME.

She never shied away from feminist conversations, and she never gave up on men - she believed in equality, and she believed men could (and did) realize feminism. She believed in showing intimacy from a woman’s point of view - her impetus for Fuses, a film-collage of her and Jim Tenney having sex.

She made playful art too - her 1995 Vulva Morphia, : an ironic and amusing story of the education of Vulva, an innocent, who initially "reads biology and understands she is an amalgam of proteins and oxytocin hormones which govern all her desires". Vulva's education progresses rapidly as she "deciphers Lacan and Baudrillard" along with other patriarchal discourses, encounters anti-female grafitti, tussles with the male art establishment and finally, ever the keen student, decodes feminist constructivist semiotics to discover that "even her erotic sensations are constructed by patriarchal projections, impositions and conditioning …"

Really, every work by Schneemann is my favorite and inspiring. Though I didn’t know it before I started creating, she absolutely inspires me and my work every single day. Perhaps the most, her Eye Body series and her reflections on it:

I wanted my actual body to be combined with the work as an integral material-- a further dimension of the construction... I am both image maker and image. The body may remain erotic, sexual, desired, desiring, but it is as well votive: marked, written over in a text of stroke and gesture discovered by my creative female will.

Joe Fleming Interview

No one I know skates harder or faster than Joe Fleming. Currently a firm staple of the scene in Nuneaton, I met Joe through Jamie "Chizel" Hamer, and instantly got on well with him. He's a chilled out dude, and he's always fun to skate with, and although absolutely amazing on a skateboard, he isn't afraid to do the odd daft trick and just have fun with skateboarding. A couple of years ago, shortly after his closing part in my vid "Franchi$e", he went MIA, but recently popped back up again and hasn't lost his trademark flair for tearing up any and all terrain. I caught up with him to see how life has been treating him.

First things first… What have you been up to for the last couple of years?

It has been a while, almost two years actually… I needed a break, because grafting all day, then skating all evening just wore me down. I ended up getting side tracked and lazy getting back on board. In that time, Sarah and I bought and moved into a new house, and we have had a baby boy! I'm stoked as can be!

How is being a dad?

At the start I was freaking out a bit, and this whole pandemic chaos had stirred me up a bit too, but I'm really excited and I still can't believe there's a mini version of me and Sarah. It's awesome!

You gonna teach them to skate?

Yeah for sure, if they wanna learn I'll teach it to them.

What drew you back to skateboarding?

It was the boredom of lockdown. I was going pretty stir crazy and needed to sort my head out, so I started going to a local skatepark with a nice flat ledge. I've been skating there quite a bit recently. My friend Dave, from Australia, kept sending me old Slam magazine photos on Instagram, and it sparked the love back for skating too.

I know you lived out in Australia and occasionally go back out there to visit, what led to you living out there?

Yeah I lived there from the age of 10 until I was 23. My stepdad is an anaesthetist and he was offered jobs at a few different hospitals in Perth, so my Mum, stepdad and I moved out there for a better life. Miss it heaps, but love it here too.

How does Australia's skate scene compare to the UK?

I'd say the weather is a big difference, and the amount of new parks being built in Australia is huge compared to here. But the skate scenes are similar wherever you go really.

Were there any skaters you met in Australia who absolutely killed it?

Yeah definitely - Zac Wilmore, Aaron Nannup, Jack Snow, Zepp Heyes, Dylan Tomlinson, Sam Bennett, Brett Margaritis, Harry Clark, Quayde Baker, Barry Mansfield, Morgan Campbelljust off the top of my head…

Where did you learn to skate and what were your local parks growing up?

Carine skatepark was my local, I love that place! Leederville was another park I skated heaps. And I loved skating Perth city too.

How did you meet Chizel and the rest of the Nuneaton crew?

I met Chizel and crew from Nunny at Bedworth skatepark. I always used to hang at my friend Fabio's place, which was in throwing distance of the park, so met a lot of people through him. Thank you Fabio.

Were you involved much with Chizel’s “Doghouse Skateboards” output?

Yeah, they were some fun days man!

Who are your favourite skateboarders?

Alltime? Or at the moment? There are too many to list!

How about we go with favourites at the moment?

Tiago Lemos, Oski, Ishod, Cody Chapman, Bobby Worrest, Stevie Williams, John Shanahan, Simon Bannerot and Lucas Healey. The DC Domino video was sick, their Brazilian team are mental.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an obstacle you can’t skate. Is there any spot out there you’ve had real trouble getting a trick on?

I like to try and skate everything, but I have trouble skating proper vert.

Similarly, your board selection is as versatile as your ability to actually skate. What kind of set up are you riding at the minute?

Mostly an 8.375 inch SUAS deck, 149 Indy trucks, Reds bearings and 50mm Spitfire Formula 4's, but I've also been riding on a 8 inch 5boro cruiser, 129 Indy lows, Reds and 51mm Dualite wheels too.

Is it possible for you to skate any faster than you already do?

Haha - Maybe some swiss bearings might help! I do like skating fast, I think it looks better and feels better.

The most commented Instagram posts from Tailwind members are consistently contests. How is it done? Easy! User generated content is content (photos and captions) that the users of your product create themselves. If you setup a branded hashtag (check nobody else is using it first and then just start using it), like DockATtot did with #dockatot, you can have your customers do the hard work of creating content for you. All you have to do is watch the feed and select the content that best captures the spirit of your brand.

Owner, Meri Geraldine, has managed to hone in on a visual aesthetic that is strikingly beautiful, using depth of field to focus the eye on the details of her jewelry, whilst making the same background feel fairly fresh each time, since it’s out of focus.

Engagement is a virtuous circle

In our previous post about how to get more likes Instagram Likes we saw how the Instagram algorithm favors posts that get engagement quickly after being published.

In Meri’s own words, “The main thing I’ve been seeing is that increased engagement leads to more engagement. Instagram will show your most liked and commented on posts to more of your Instagram followers, and they may even bump you to the explore page of your followers’ friends or of people who follow similar pages to yours. In the end, more engagement will also lead to new followers. You want the engagement in the first hour or so of posting for it to keep boosting.

This ring is an oldie. I made her with a sapphire slice that I found on our trip to Sri Lanka and had polished ever so lightly by a friend in Java. That crystal pattern is through the roof! I never got to putting her up on the website – something just didn’t feel quite right about the design. Don’t neglect your descriptions. Gardens of the Sun write descriptions to their Instagram posts that do justice to their photographs and their exquisite jewelry. In the above example Meri invites her followers to decide how she might re-set this “sapphire slice” (wonderful turn-of-phrase).

Engage with your followers in the comments

As Meri puts it, “I suggest writing captions that engage your Instagram followers – tell them something that they can easily relate to, a story that connects them to the photo or a question they’d love to answer. Whenever I have time I will thank everyone who commented on my post, because I appreciate my followers so much. They’re the people who help me stay in business and support me to keep doing what I love.”

ART SCHOOL | LAUREN ASTA (Chicago, IL) | Vans US Open of Surfing 2017

We’re excited to spotlight the artists for this year’s 2017 Vans US Open of Surfing that is set to begin July 29th To August 6th in Huntington Beach, CA. Our first artist spotlight starts with talented, hard working, and art touring muralist and public artist Lauren Asta! Starting with a massive 3,000 sq ft mural at Faction Brewery in 2015, Asta has been non-stop mural and art touring, bringing her signature black and white, free flowing and spontaneous doodles to walls and buildings all over. She’s not only extremely talented but also straight up fearless, as we find out in this Q&A with Lauren, where we talk about how she got started painting murals, her art background, and what event she’s looking forward to see at this year’s 2017 Vans US Open of Surfing.

Introduce yourself Hello, Lauren Asta here, first time caller, long time listener... I was born and raised in California's thriving Bay Area, but if you ask me I feel like I was truly born in NYC when I moved there after College in 2005. I returned back to California in 2012 where I hunkered down and produced and hustled until I was able to drop all other job training wheels to solely do Art/Murals/Public Art/Street Art 100% of my time and to also travel all year long with no brick and mortar to call my own. I am a citizen of the world dammit. I'd first and foremost like to think of myself as a Muralist/Public Artist but I think it's safe to just say I am an Artist. What’s your art background like? Self taught or art schooled? I've been drawing for as long as I can remember. First memory would be when I became aware of the fact that I would much rather doodle in sketchbooks over writing in all the Hello Kitty Diaries my girl friends had. I did go to school for Art at CSU Chico State. I got my BA in Photography and Studio Art. But that was when Photography was still pretty much taught only in the dark room. Digital Photography quickly became the trend right after I graduated college in 2004, so finding work (and making money) as a dark room photographer in NYC was extremely difficult. The next (and cheapest) artistic expression for me was to go back to pen and paper. I started drawing, drawing, drawing again. That crucial production time morphed and shaped what my style is today. So I guess you could say I am both self taught and schooled.

What’s the best thing you learned in art school or what’s the best thing you learned while teaching yourself? Best thing I learned in school: make art like everyone is watching. Best thing I learned while teaching myself: make art like no one is watching.

This is your first year participating as an artist painting inside the bowl at the Vans US Open of Surfing! What are some of your top 5 things you're sure to bring along? SUNSCREEN, straw hat, game face, headphones, my Vans of course! (honorable mentionable items include: water bottle, lucky paint shorts, GoPro, party fun face).

Tell us about how you started out painting murals? What was the first mural you can remember doing? What was the last mural? Before I was a self employed full time Artist... I bartended... for years. Bartending in NYC led me to getting a job at a Distillery in Alameda CA. This Distillery (St. George Spirits) is located in an old 65,000 sq. ft. hangar. Right next to the Distillery a Brewery (Faction Brewing) was opening up while I was about 2 years into working for St. George. When the Brewery had just opened, a very large ugly unfinished wall went up right smack dab in the middle of the neighboring 65,000 sq. ft. hangar. Hundreds of people were flocking to this new Brewery on a weekly basis taking photos and enjoying life. The number one complaint was "they should really do something with that wall..." So I took it upon myself to approach the owners and give them my proposal. I proposed to prime the whole thing, paint the whole thing white and to do a mural for a small price and if they rented a scissor lift. They agreed, and before I knew it I was tackling a 3,000 sq. ft. mural with no prior large scale work and no sketch to work off of. I literally just went for it and hoped it would turn out alright. I finished it in 28 days and I felt like I was an overnight success. I completed that mural 3 years ago and people still flock to it as a destination point. I quit my day job shortly after that and have been going strong ever since. That mural changed my life and I am eternally grateful. The last mural I did was last month (June 2017) in Chicago! A sweet rooftop patio mural at Chop Shop in the Wicker Park neighborhood. I am booked with solid rad gigs until November!

What’s been the best part of Art Tour life? Anything you’d change about it? The best part about the Art Tour Life? ALL OF IT. Damn it feels good to be a traveling Artist. I meet so many rad amazing people... I have friends all over the country now! I get to experience all sorts of tasty culture found in this Country and outside of it. The way I am able to connect people with art in multiple cities feels like I am planting little art seeds everywhere I go and watching how they grow after I leave is extremely satisfying. Travel is an absolute luxury in life and I am so lucky I get to incorporate it into my work. I love the feeling I get now when I fly into cities I have been before because I can't wait to see friends, revisit favorite joints and of course to get to work... but there's nothing like exploring a new city. I live for it. I am a big fan of walking everywhere, tasting everything and taking in as much as I can.

You’ve been known to freestyle in a way your murals, never using a sketch, projector or traced outline. What about this particular way / process do you enjoy the most? What would you say is the most challenging part of free styling? I find that if I don't have a sketch or drawing to work from, the end result will always look and feel more organic and it will fit the space/environment more appropriately. There's something really nice about working on a mural in a specific space for a few days and to have the people there, the weather, the noises, the food affect the outcome of the mural. It just seems to fit like a puzzle piece the space didn't even know it was missing. The most challenging part about free styling a mural would be if there was nothing around to inspire me or move me. If a space is really sterile, it takes a lot more energy and specific focus to get the job done where as I can usually just get into a zone and almost go into a "meditative autopilot groove."

What do you do with mistakes if you make any? I used to make sure that I always had some white paint on hand... just in case I made a mistake I could "erase" it. But that always took too much time and it never ended up looking as clean as I like it, so I just decided to not make any more mistakes. I mean... if I make a mark that I don't like or didn't mean to make, I just turn the old imagination station on and turn the "mistake" into something else. I have never run into a situation where this method didn't work... unless you count the time I fell in between two ladders and spilled black paint all over the mural I had been working on for three days... that one I had to fix with white paint and start over. But you live and learn! I'll never try to be an dangerous art acrobat again. Maybe...

Recently, you participated in the House of Vans Chicago Prime 8 event. Can you tell us about that evening and what you were doing at the event?

Such a rad event with a rad cause! The 6th Annual Prime 8 Art League provided a free event showcasing the 2017 selected applicant's work (which I am super honored to be a part of). They also featured entertainment, food, refreshments and a charity raffle that included all sorts of prizes. The best part... all proceeds generated from the raffle and related activities were donated to Marwen, an organization dedicated to providing visual arts instruction to under-served youth throughout the Chicago area. Pretty rad right? I was stoked to participate by doing a live painting on a large canvas that was raffled off at the end of the night. Felt extremely good to be showcased at The House Of Vans Chicago and to contribute towards something positive.

Favorite Vans? And how would you describe your personal style? I haven't taken them off since I scored a new pair in Chicago! Right now I am rocking my black SK8-Hi Reissue kicks. I am obsessed. My personal style is pretty functional with some dressy stuff on reserve just in case. Pretty much everything I own has paint on it... even my expensive threads. When I travel, I have to be incredibly thoughtful and smart with what and how I pack. Give me a simple pair of ripped jeans or shorts and t-shirt and Vans any good old paint day, but if there's something fun cooking after a long paint day, I am always fashionably prepared. I guess you can just call it a "fun functionable no high heels but party paint girl with a whole lotta sass" kind of style... If you want to get specific.

Personal words to live by? SO MANY WORDS TO LIVE BY. But my favorite motto (and a very strange motto at that) came from the director of one of my first really big gigs. It was the first time I really felt overwhelmed and that I might not be able to finish the job. One day I was on the phone with him freaking out and he interrupted me by saying: "Lauren... How do you eat an Elephant?" I was kind of dumbfounded. I replied with "What the hell are you talking about??" He repeated with "How. Do. You. Eat. An. Elephant?" "I have no idea" I said. He calmly replied with "one bite at a time." One bite at a time... I repeat that to myself all the time. I even have it tattooed on my painting arm so I can see it when I work. It's a good reminder that you can absolutely finish something, big or small, if you just keep at it and you don't give up. I love it. I also love and repeat the words "I never want to regret a decision based on fear" constantly.

What event at this year’s Vans US Open of Surfing are you most looking forward to checking out? Damn. I am so excited to see some powerful ladies turn up the dial and rock some surfing out! I have an admiration for all of the players in all of the events in store at the Vans US Open of Surfing, but to see some ladies kill it at something so mentally and physically demanding, I have no doubt, will be extremely inspiring and will give me some pretty radical energy to get my job done!

For folks who wanna follow in your path, what advice would you give them? Produce produce produce. Work on your style like no one is watching until you are so proud of it and confident to show it off. Once you unlock that door, the rest is up to you to get yourself out there. If you have the skill, right attitude and a solid hustle/work ethic... the possibilities are endless and people will want to hire you. Failure is part of the journey. Embrace it and learn from it. Too many talented people give up way too early. This is a demanding job, so understanding that you'll need to give up certain luxuries that you might be used to, is a often "not so talked about" part of being successful in this specific career. The notion of having kids is one I gave up a long time ago, a serious long term relationship is near impossible, putting your keys in the same spot every day is unlikely, clean clothes 24/7 is laughable, not knowing where you're sleeping next week is common, saying goodbye to amazing friends and family all the time is consistent, missing Holidays and family events is indeed a reoccurring event in itself, your taxes will be A MESS, figuring out a Southwest Airlines Boarding strategy will become a new favorite past time... But damn it... your life be passionately exciting and leaving your mark by contributing something as necessary and positive as art in the world will be oh so sweet and tasty and satisfying.

What do you have planned for the rest of 2017? I cannot wait to boogie on down to Huntington Beach at the end of the month for the Vans Us Open of Surfing! This mural job is definitely going down in the record books. I can just taste it. After painting the bowl, I immediately head to Chicago where I will be working on murals all of August. Then it's a quick trip to Oakland for a mural job. Then back to Chicago to produce work for a Gallery show at the end of October 2017. Then a jump over to Memphis for a big mural event. Then back up to Chicago for more mural work and I will be finishing work for the Gallery Opening at Chicago Truborn October 21. One more mural job in Chicago after that then I am turning brain off in Mexico for a month on the Beach. Pretty stoked! Follow along!

I can’t believe it’s been something like 8 months since I’ve posted anything. Lots has been going on, but I’ve been more about making things with my hands than writing about life’s adventures. I am back in a writing mode for a while now, as I started the daily battle called NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) for November.

So far I am over 10,000 words in to my first draft of the long-threatened “Little Shit” memoir (fictionalized memoir? autobiographical fiction?) that now has the working title Crazy Cat Girl, probably an easier sell than Little Shit.

Will I ever finish the book? Do I ever finish anything? All of my impossible dreams, me as Dona (Doña?) Quixote, fighting those windmills.

Did you know that there was a female Don Quixote? In 1752, Charlotte Lennox published The Female Quixote; or, The Adventures of Arabella. Wow people with that the next time you need dinner party conversation.

2019 has been my year of being Arabella. I started French lessons at the local adult school. Gave up when it got too hard (aka, I didn’t have time to study). Windmills 1, Arabella 0.

We foster failed again. Gorgeous, shy, sweet polydactyl Butterscotch came to us to recover from a head injury earlier in the year, and has been granted permanent resident status. He and the now grown-up Pugcat are quite the best friends. I don’t know who gets the win; I think Arabella in this case.

I might have gotten over my fear of it hurting and entered the world of tattoos. Pugcat now lives in portrait form on my left arm. (I have yet to get good images of the actual tattoo, mainly because I think my arm looks fat in all of the photos.)

If there was ever a tattoo worthy cat, it’s Pugcat.

We didn’t get a summer vacation this year, but I did get to the Thomas Wolfe Society meeting, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Gettysburg, a lovely place, was quite the eye-opening experience. As a result, we ended up watching the PBS/Ken Burns documentary The Civil War. I learned so much about this country that I didn’t know. It was very moving, heart-wrenching in all honesty.

I also was honored to be selected to attend the Animals and Society Institute’s summer program at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) Center for Advanced Study. Over 20 animal studies doctoral students and recent PhDs spent a week with incredible mentors, workshopping our projects and making new friends. Including some animal ones, like the goats we visited, or the tarantula who visited us. My first visit to the mid-West, where it was hot and humid and I relearned the joy of lying in the grass under a shady tree.

The down side was living in the dormitories. Let’s just say, I’m too old and private for dormitory life.

Here is where Arabella comes in. I was so inspired by my week of studies that I rewrote my dissertation proposal, which is essentially the first 3 chapters of the dissertation. I had been through several drafts, none of which got through my committee. I was very excited about the new version, and my committee chair seemed to be, too. But I got shot down again. Pesky windmills, forever winning the battles. After a cooling down period (I do get angry sometimes), I dropped out of school. Well, I withdrew from Saybrook with the intention of finding spot at another university to finish my dissertation. I have high hopes for a place at Antioch University next year. So Arabella is still in the fight on this one. Charlotte Lennox did give her two volumes, after all.

But what’s really thrown me for a loop this year was the loss of a beloved litter of foster kittens. Mother cat Leah and her babies came to us when the babies were only 2 days old.

The kittens all had names starting with L (Liam, Linus, Lily, I forget). We renamed them. I couldn’t keep the L names straight. We named them after writers: Jules (Verne), Toni (Morrison), Willa (Cather), and Ernest (Hemingway).

Leah was a wonderful mother. The babies grew strong and healthy, keeping us entertained with their antics and enthralled with their daily changes.

They seemed well on their way to wonderful lives. And then a giant, evil windmill called panleukopenia virus stepped in and devasted us when the kittens were about 7 weeks old. Kittens are fragile, and their mortality rate is higher than you might think. Our hearts were broken when the decision was made to humanely euthanize the suffering babies. On a brighter note, mother Leah is fine and has been adopted.

We grieve. I am just at the point of writing about it, partly because as I do my daily writing for NaNoWriMo, I realize there is so much I am still working through from my life, including grieving for what seemed like the loss of childhood and for my mother, who has been gone for 10 years now.

I had been throwing myself into art projects. One of my favorite places on earth these days is Etui, at 2518 San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley. I would take every single class offered there if I could, and sleep in the shop in between! Plus owners/teachers Alice Armstrong and Bethany Carlson Mann, are 2 of my favorite people!

I started a tunnel book project in memory of the 4 kittens. While it can get me emotional, that’s not a bad thing, and I am in a group of incredibly supportive and loving people in the Books, Boxes, and More class. I haven’t completely finished the book, and it’s hard to photograph, but the making of it has been surprisingly healing.

Some other fun art projects I’ve started and actually finished this year include my first attempt at basketry, wax flower crowns, and crepe paper fruits and flowers (quince fruit box pictured below). I find making things with my hands, whether it’s art, crafts, food, whatever, very therapeutic. Expensive hobbies, but maybe cheaper than therapy? Maybe…

But I am not letting the panleukopenia derail our fostering more than necessary. For a while, we can only foster adult cats with vaccinations and healthy immune systems (in case any of the evil panleuk virus lurks in unseen places in the house). Meet Daisy, our 8-year old house guest who needed a break from shelter life!

Is there a lesson in all of this? Keep your head up. Keep following your dreams. And if I’ve left you with the Robert Goulet version of the Man of La Mancha song Impossible Dream, which I mainly remember from the Jerry Lewis yearly muscular dystrophy telethons, my sincerest apologies.

Believe me, there are endless versions of this song available. But if I am going to make this up to you all, I need to leave you with a truly good one. I love Tom Jones, I used to wish Andy Williams was my dad, Brian Stokes Mitchell won a Tony for his performance, you can never beat Frank Sinatra, I love the idea of a Liberace version, but it’s really hard to find a version that isn’t cheesy, overly dramatic, or just plain icky. I am partial to this rendition by the late Glen Campbell, who I’ve developed a new appreciation for in the last few years.
