ikr ... their first meeting was so emotionally moving and thematically great? i was gonna quote the scene just now but i found myself copying and pasting the entire short story into the post...

the sheer amount of rapid yet well-written character development and relationship development between ciri and geralt within this short story: the fact that when they first meet, geralt makes false threats to spank ciri and she responds with false threats to have his head chopped off ... and then she confides in him about her parents and her background ... and she cuddles up next to him during the bedtime story ... and then shes so frightened and upset when she finds out that the dryads are planning to take her away from geralt ... 

geralt’s... natural paternal instincts to protect ciri and even in the relative beginning, being upset that she will become a dryad

ciri being written so well as a child, like this is exactly how kids act lol? this sounds like a weird thing to compliment but a lot of writers don’t know how to write children

the way that ciri vehemently refuses to marry prince kirsten (foreshadowing her later character development / events)

geralt teaching ciri to blow her nose in her hand ... “Ciri's cold was getting worse and worse. Geralt, who had no handkerchiefs, and who was tired of hearing the constant sniffling, taught her to blow her nose in her fingers. This pleased the little girl enormously. From her smile and her sparkling eyes, the witcher knew that she was delighted by the idea of being able to show that trick to the court during a banquet or an audience with an overseas ambassador.”

ciri just being absolutely wrecked when she finds out that she won’t be able to go with geralt sdfghjkl;

AND THEN

AND THEN ciri takes the waters and is like NO I STILL WANNA GO WITH GERALT and geralts like hey thanks eithne for not giving her the legit waters and eithne is like that WAS the legit waters and geralts like what and drinks for himself AND HE HAS A flashback to a question of price and realizes destiny AND THEN

"But Nanny said... She said that I was the subject of destiny. Because I was the surprise. The child-surprise, Geralt?"

"Ciri." He looked into her eyes, nodding and smiling. "You can believe me: you are the biggest surprise I have ever met."
