West Bengal Government’s Safe Drive Save Life programme has enabled in significantly bringing down the number of accidents in the state. The State’s Road Safety Council a few days back presented to the State Transport Department, Kolkata and Howrah Police, and PWD Department officials a detailed report on the state of road safety in Bengal. The number of road accidents in the state has reduced by 19.52 per cent. Naturally, the number of deaths and injury cases have also reduced, by 11.5 per cent and 14 per cent, respectively, a transport official here today said. Another aspect of the programme has been the police insisting on the use of helmets both by drivers and pillion riders.
