Bio:
Jonathan grew up in Los Angeles along with his two siblings and his parents. His father was a firefighter and Jonathanâs hero growing up(which inspires him to become one as well) while his mother was the owner of a small cafe. Tragically, his father died in the line of duty when Jonathan was 12. He spend his teen years helping out his mom with the cafe and raising his siblings. When he turned 25, his mom convinced Jonathan to applied to the LA Fire Department academy like he always wanted. When he graduated early, he was sent to Engine Company 13 and it plays out from there.
Personally: Jonathan can be describe as a calm guy and can keep his head cool under pressure. But he does have somewhat of a daredevil streak to him(not to the extend of Match but itâs still there). Always willing to help whenever he can and will often take fatalities hard.  When with his teammates, Jonathan is often more often listening than talking and often get worried about them if one of them gets hurt during calls(especially Match as he had to rescue him at least 2 times due to Matchâs daredevil attitude).  and is a loyal friend though and though. Often has to play peacekeeper with his teammates. He can however be afraid to speak up at times and will often keep whatâs troubling him to himself.Â

Jonathan and Jeanne(Probie): Cooking. They grew up helping their mom around her cafe after their father passed away in the line of duty. While they usually worked as a waiter/waitress, they would help out in the kitchen once in a while. They would also cook for their two siblings if their mom couldnât make it home that day.
Sometime at the firehouse(if they wasnât any very early morning dispatch calls), they will get up earlier than their teammates and have breakfast ready for everyone when they get up.
Which is your OC more skilled at: cooking or baking?

BuckTommy Î WC: 2.5k Î cw: gunshot, blood, hostage situation (implied i think)
[below or on ao3]
The chopper finally crested the horizon, its rotors cutting the air like thunder. The unmistakable shape of Tommyâs bird. Buckâs heart kicked so hard it stole his breath.
He stood at the edge of the landing zone, shoes sunk into the dirt, hands clenched into fists.
Heâs coming back, for real this time.
They said it was a success. The rescue team Tommy was flying were the first to escape. And the restâit had been finalized by nowâA success.
But Buck couldnât breathe. Couldnât cheer. Not yet. Not without seeing him first.
The chopper descended slow, steady.
And Buck waited.
*
[four hours earlier]
By the time the tactical teams arrived, Tommy had been held at gunpoint for hoursâforced to fly, move equipment, keep the bird in the air while they unloaded chemicals for god knows what.
He was dehydrated, bruised, but alive.
âŚAnd stupid.
Because the first thing he did after they pulled him from the chopper was chug a bottle of water and say, âI know what theyâre planning. Let me help stop them. Let me help save my guy.â
Everyone hesitated. But he was former military. He knew how they operated. Heâd seen the inside.
And just like that, he was in again.
Buck had gone up, on the helipad where Tommy was waiting alone for the team to gather. It was sunset time, soft light spilling gold across the rooftop. Tommy sat on a crate, elbows on his knees, head down.
Buck sat beside him. âThat was clever, what you said.â
Tommy looked over, eyes dull but alert. He managed a half-smile.
âKnew youâd catch it.â
Buck gestured to the side of his own face, mimicking the angle of Tommyâs darkening bruise.
âYou okay?â
Tommy laughed. âYeah. Tried to run once. You know. Wasn't clever.â
He rubbed his jaw, the bruise spreading down his neck.
âI got this⌠And my probieâhe got shot in the foot, Evan... I- need him to be alive.â
Buck swallowed, nodding slowly. âH-He will⌠theyâll get him home.â
Tommy looked down at his hands, flexed his fingers once, then again.
âI keep thinkingâŚâ he said quietly, eyes still on his hands. âIf Iâd just been smarter. If Iâd questioned it harder. I knew it didnât feel right.â
His jaw clenched.
âI shouldnât have landed. I shouldnât have let us walk right into it.â
Buck opened his mouth, but Tommy shook his head before he could speak.
âHe trusted me, Evan. First shift out, and I walked him into a trap.â
âYou didnât plan thisâŚâ
âIt should be me out there with them right now.â
Buck blinked hard. âYouâre not invincible, Tommy.â
âI know.â
Tommyâs voice cracked, just for a moment. âBut I can handle itâmyself, Iâve done this before. Heâs hasnât.â
âTommyââ
The team started coming upâvoices echoing, boots scuffing against the roof.
Tommy moved to stand, but Buck reached out and grabbed his arm before he could climb back into the second chopper, voice low and breaking
âYou almost died in there. Can you justâplease, can you not be a hero for once? Let them do it?â
âEvanâŚâ
Buckâs grip on Tommyâs arm tightened, not like a firefighter trying to hold someone back, but like a man trying to stop his whole world from walking away.
âI-I saw your name in the systemâânon-responsive pilot.â I thought⌠shit, Tommy, I thought you wereââ He shook his head, voice cracking. âI thought Iâd never get the chance to talk to you again. After w-what I said last timeâTommy, I-I didnât mean it. I swear, I didnât. Please just let me explain. Just... s-stay. You canât just run back in like none of this matters. Like we donât matter.â
âIt matters,â Tommy said quietly. âYou matter. We matter. Butââ
âThen stay.â Buckâs voice cracked. âStay and talk to me. Please. Youâre not okayâw-weâre not okay. You left and we neverââ He bit the inside of his cheek. âWe never got to fix it.â
Tommy adjusted his vest, fingers steady but slow. He looked up finally, eyes tired but clear.
âWe canâw-we will.â He reached out briefly, brushed the back of Buckâs hand with his knuckles.
Buckâs voice softened, pleading now. âYouâre tired, Tommy. Let the team handle it.â
Tommy shook his head.
âItâll be faster if I go. Iâve been flying around for them for almost thirty hoursâI have it mapped. I know the terrain. I know where they might move.â
He hesitated, just a beat.
âIâll come back, Evan. Weâll talk⌠After this... I got him into this. I should be the one keeping him safe.â His jaw tightened. âNot sitting here waiting while someone else does it for me.â
And he was gone.
*
[the present]
The chopper touched down.
The team ran forward to meet the medicsâlaughing, breathless, covered in ash and adrenaline. Tommyâs probie was limping, clearly injured, but alive. Heâd be okay.
One of them shouted over the noise, grinning wideâ âKinardâs a damn legend! He flew us through open fireâ no one else couldâve done it.â
Another added, breathless and awedââThatâs a damn good soldier! He flew us through hell no one else couldâve pulled that off!â
Buckâs chest swelled with pride. He wanted to kiss Tommy for all thisâjust as much as he wanted to smack him.
But he didnât come out yet.
The pilot side was still shut. And Buck was done waiting.
So, He ran⌠He climbed up, shoes slipping a little against the slick metal. He yanked the door openâ
âand the world dropped out from under him.
Tommy was slumped forward in the seat. One hand still rested against the control stick. The other was pressed weakly to his side, red soaking his flight suit through his fingers in thick, pulsing waves.
His head lolled toward Buck at the movement, lips parted, breathing shallow.
âHey,â Tommy mumbled, voice wet and strained. âTook you long enough,â
âT-Tommyââ Buckâs voice cracked. He unbuckled him fast, hands shaking, then moved Tommyâs trembling hand aside to press his own against the wound.
âShitâshit, Tommy, thatâs a lot of blood.â
Tommy blinked slowly, dazed. âDidnât⌠notice at the time.â He had, though. Somewhere between the smoke and fire. He just hadnât cared.
A pause. A weak breath. âI was still flying⌠Think adrenaline was doing the flying.â
Buck pulled him out of the cockpit, lowering him to the dirt as gently as he couldâbut Tommy still tensed with a sharp, guttural groan.
âAhâfuckââ Tommy hissed, every movement sending pain ripping through his side. His eyes fluttered, breath catching. âGod, that hurts, Evan...â
Buck cradled his head with one hand and pressed the other hard into the wound. Blood coated his palm instantlyâwarm and thick.
Stomach wound. Close to the liver. Too much blood. Too fast.
âHelp!â Buck shouted, voice breaking. âMedics! I need medicsânow!â
Chaos spun around himâshouting, boots hitting the ground, someone calling for a trauma bag.
Tommy winced, blinking hard. âIs everyone okay?â
Buckâs face twisted. âNo, Tommyâeveryone is not okay!â
Tommy tried to focus, lashes fluttering. âWhoâs hurt?â
âYou are, you stubborn idiot.â
âOhâŚâ Tommy breathed, barely audible. âAnyone âlse?â
Henâs voice snapped through the noise, âBuckâmove your hand for just a secondâChimney, start a line!â
Then, softer, as she knelt beside them âHey, Tommy. We got you, okay? Stay with us.â
Her hands moved fast across his vest, lifting it enough to see the soaked undershirt beneath.
âDamn. It got him under the edge,â she muttered. âVest didnât catch it.â
Chimney dropped to his knees on the other side, already tearing open gauze and pushing gloves on with shaking hands.
âWhat the hell happened?â
âHe was flying bleeding out, thatâs what happened!â Buck yelled, barely keeping it together. âHe didnât tell anyoneâhe didnâtââ
ââdidnât.. know Evân!â Tommy protested
Chimney let out a breath, almost a laugh, even as he started placing the Life Pak. âAlways trying to be cool, Tommy.â
âOkay, okay,â Hen said firmly. âWeâve got him. You did good, Buck. Just stay with us.â
But Buck couldnât stop pressing, couldnât stop staring at Tommyâs faceâalready too pale, lips tinged red from what heâd coughed up just moments earlier.
Tommy blinked slowly, smile fading.
His hand lifted, trembling, streaked with bloodâand he reached out, brushing Buckâs cheek.
âH-hey⌠Evââs okayâŚâ Tommy slurred, barely audible. âIt doesnât hârt..â
Buck caught itâhis own hand rising to cover Tommyâs, holding it in place against his face, grounding them both.
âJesus Tommyâweâve got you. Justââ
ââs so dark⌠canât see yââ His fingertips left a red smear across Buckâs face, like he was trying to memorize him with what little strength he had left.
âS-sorry.â
For the blood. For getting hurt. For a thousand things he never fixed.
Buck shook his head, eyes glassy. âItâs okay. Itâs okay, Tommyâyouâre okay. Just stay with us. Please.â
Tommy coughedâhardâblood bubbling at the corner of his mouth.
His eyes fluttered. His lips moved again, slower, more effort now.
âJusâ⌠so yâknow⌠EvanâŚâ A breath. Shaky. Fragile. âWasnât⌠jusâ a code. I did⌠love you. I love yâ. Neâer⌠stopped.â
Buckâs breath hitched.
His eyes slammed shut for half a second, like the words physically struck himâand when they opened again, they were full of tears. His grip on Tommyâs hand tightened. He leaned in, forehead almost brushing Tommyâs, as if he could will him to stay.
His lips parted again, weaker this time.
âDidnât mean toâŚâ
Buck voice barely came out. âI know, Tommy. I know. You didnât.â
ââŚM-mess it upâŚâ
âYou didnât mess anything up. J-just stay with meâplease.â
Henâs voice cut in fastâcalm, commanding. âOkay, weâve got to move himâon my count. Chim, grab the board. Buck, I need your help.â
âYeahâyeah, Iâve got him,â Buck said hoarsely, still gripping Tommyâs hand like a lifeline.
Chimney slid the backboard into place as Buck shifted, crouched low, one arm already under Tommyâs back, the other at his shoulders.
âTommy, buddy, donât make this harder than it already isâstay with us, man,â Chim muttered, voice tight. âHow many times do I gotta save your life, huh?â
Tommy huffedâa breath, really, more air than sound. Almost a laugh. Then winced sharply, the motion pulling through his whole body.
âOne, two, threeââ Hen counted.
They lifted togetherâBuck moving with them, careful, steady, still murmuring under his breath: âIâve got you. Iâve got you. Youâre okay.â
They settled him onto the gurney. Straps fastened. Bag ready.
âEv⌠Jusâ a min⌠giâ me a⌠secâŚâ Tommy said as his eyes began to close.
âHeyâh-hey, no!â Buckâs voice shattered. âTommyâno, stay awakeâstay with me!â
Tommyâs eyes rolled back. A twitch. A sound like a breath that got lost halfway out.
The hand Buck was holding fell limp in his palm.
âTommy?â
âWe lost his pulseâheâs crashing!â Chimney shouted, voice sharp.
Buck froze.
âTommyâ? No. No no noââ
No pulse. No pulse. No pulseâ
âBuckâcompressions, now! Iâve got the bleed!â Hen snapped, already pressing hard into the wound with both hands. âWeâll deal with the damage laterâjust get his heart going!â
Buckâs hands moved on instinct before she even finished.
Chest compressions. Breath. More blood.
His voice cracked with every count.
âPleaseâplease donât do this to me, Tommyââ
His shoulders shook.
âYou always do this, Tommyââ
He sobbed.
âYou always runâthis is how you run this time?! Y-you said weâd talk⌠you said weâd fix thisââ
He broke.
âCome on⌠stop running, Tommy!â
His voice cracked again.
âCome on, Tommyâcome on, baby, come on, come onââ
He pressed harder. Faster. Desperate.
The world spun around himâlights, sirens, shoutingâbut Buck only saw the man beneath his hands.
And he wasnât letting him go.
*
It was quiet when Tommy woke up.
Too quiet from what he last remembered.
No shouting. No alarms. No wind against the rotors. No Buck yelling his name like it was the only thing left tethering him to life.
Just the slow, steady beeping of a heart monitor.
He woke up slowly.
Not all at onceâjust in fragments.
Pain first. Dull and deep, radiating from somewhere in his stomach. Then the weight in his chest. His throat, raw. Something pressed under his noseâoxygen.
His eyelids dragged open.
White ceiling, pale, unfamiliar. Fluorescent hum. Hospital.
For a moment, he panicked.
Shit.
His hand hurt.
Which didnât make sense. He didnât remember hurting his hand.
It took a few secondsâlong, sluggish secondsâbefore he realized it wasnât pain exactly. It was pressure. Something wrapped around it. Warm. Steady. Too tight.
His fingers twitched.
The grip jolted, just slightlyâand then Tommy felt it
A breath. Right against his side.
A forehead resting lightly near his hip.
Evan.
Still here. Still holding his hand like it was the only thing keeping him anchored.
Tommy blinked slowly, exhaling a soft, rasping breath.
ââm alive?â
Buck stirred fast. Sat up. Eyes wide.
âTommyâ? Hey. Oh my Godâheyââ His voice cracked with every word.
And Tommyâsmiling just barely, weak and achingâwhispered, âDid I mess up again?â
Buck let out a laugh that sounded half like a sob. âWhat? no. You scared the hell out of me, but no. You didnât mess up anything.â
Tommy blinked slowly, groggy. âY-you were yellingâŚâ
Buck laughed againâshakier this time. âYeah, well⌠you coded in my armsâtwice, soây-yeah. I was yelling.â
He swallowed hard.
âA-and then you were in surgery for⌠six hours? Seven? They wouldnât tell us anything except âweâre doing what we can.â The whole time, Tommy.â His voice cracked. âThe whole time.â
âYou shouldâve seen you,â Buck added, voice low. âYou didnât move. But IâGod, I think I forgot how to breathe until they said you made it through.â
Tommy let out a soft, broken breath. He winced. âMâsorry.â
âDonât apologize. Justâdonât ever do that again.â
Tommy gave the faintest smile. âWasnât... part of the plan.â
Buck huffed, still gripping his hand. âDonât make plans to be a hero again.â
Tommyâs smile twisted, wry and cracked. âCanât promise you that.â
âI knowâŚâ Buck brought their joined hands to his chest and whispered, âYou said weâd talk.â
Tommy nodded, barely. âThen letâs talk.â
Buck smiledâjust a littleâand looked down, eyes still wet. He nodded once. âIâll get the nurse first.â
But he didnât move.
The silence stretched. Still. Safe.
Then Tommy squeezed his hand.
âEvanâŚâ
Buckâs head snapped up. âUhâs-sorryââ
Tommy shook his head slowly. âNo. SâokayâŚâ
He smiled faintly.
âI came back.â
Buckâs tears finally gave up.
âYou c-came backâŚâ
His face broke somewhere between a laugh and a sob, and he shook his head, leaning forward until his forehead dropped gently against Tommyâs shoulder.
Tommy winced at the sudden weightâbut his hand moved instinctively, threading weakly through Buckâs hair.
âShhh⌠sâokay, baby,â he whispered. âIâm here now. I got you.â

How do you think the writers could improve the characters? Like aside from Owen because we all know how he needs to change, they just arenât doing it and making these changes for his character. I mean for Mateo, Paul and Marjan. I feel like when they have their little storylines, they donât rly show much I mean they are interesting and I love seeing more of my faves of course but they donât rly show these characters progressing in any way aside from Marjanâs recent storyline where she saved the girl in the house and maybe Paulâs with his sister. But with TK or Judd and even Graceâs storyline after the crash, we have seen slow growth in their characters and how they have learned from some experience to be better and be more open or something. Mateoâs was interesting because we saw his roommates and life outside of work which I loved but he moved in with Owen and we rolled right into another Owen-center or Owen-related plot line and itâs just annoying. Of course it was nice that Owen offered Mateo a place to stay because his burned down but as soon as Mateo moved in, it was all about Owenâs man pain and we cut to a later intervention about Owen lying about his surgery and other behavior. Paulâs first I think was when he went on the date with that woman who basically told him she couldnât date him because he is trans at least thatâs what I got from it. And like thatâs not a nice storyline Paul didnât learn or grow from that and probably only felt like shit in the end despite brushing it off. And the one with his sister was eventually resolved but I want a storyline for him that doesnât involve his identity because thatâs not just who he is- of course itâs a very important part that shouldnât be ignored but I just want storylines for him that arenât JUST about that- heâs Paul with great observation skills and heâs a good friend and a nice guy. And Carlos, too. The one in 2x8 with his dad was *chefâs kiss* amazing but I want more solo storylines for him. I know heâs TKâs partner and I love that for him because theyâre cute but I want storylines for just Carlos. And I donât meant to complain because the arsonist storyline where his place burns down looks rly good and maybe thatâs a start if itâs just him in the house but I hope you get what I mean? And I love Marjan, Mateo, Paul and Carlos I donât mean to complain about their storylines because Iâm grateful we even get anything on them with how much the writers have eyes just for Owen but yeah I just want more (and better) for them
You make a lot of strong points, and I really think youâre right that thereâs still more to do, adn that thereâs a lot I hope for when it comes to those characters. Yeah, I think the main thing is to give them time, but not just time, they need to give them quality screentime. Some characters have been getting more screentime without being more developed, which is a major struggle that the show needs to get over to better showcase its characters. Oh no, this is going to wind me up!!
(TLDR: they just need to flesh out the characters and show that they are more than just one part of their identities.)
Youâre right about those storylines not allowing growth. Paulâs storyline with his sister ended up being about his sisterâs growth, and the thing is, the Josie storyline was very similar in all the wrong ways. It was about Josieâs discomfort. Transphobia becomes something that is about the phobic people rather than the person who is experiencing it! These people also claim to be accepting of his transition, but they also show the opposite with their reactions (Josie was like, âyouâre perfect but I canât date you because youâre transâ while Paulâs sister also commented that she didnât care that he was trans but also droned on about how she missed her sister... who Paul points out never existed. Like the whole storyline seems to be a pat on the back for transphobes, as if to reassure them that their behaviors are what we should be empathetic to.) Ultimately, Paul wasnât the active participant in his own story; thus, he canât really grow and develop. Paul needs to have more storylines that he is an active participant in (by making the scenes in his perspective rather than that of the subjugators). We also havenât seen Paulâs flaws, whereas weâve seen flaws of the more fleshed out characters. We know heâs heavily intellectual, observant, and a great listener, but I also want to see a moment when he has more of a struggle (one that is not related to him being trans because he needs a plot beyond that one part of him).
Mateo also is reduced to basically an object in other storylines. His screentime is rarely about him. Even in that last episode that featured a storyline about him, that storyline basically reduced him to a pawn in Owenâs storyline, which didnât allow Mateo to have any growth. We didnât learn anything new about him (at least not anything meaningful to the deeper nature of his character). We know very little about what makes Mateo ticks, and I think he is the character who is most reduced to just a few characteristics. Heâs constantly a ditzy figure, and I want to see him as more than the probie. In the first episode, we saw that heâs attentive, and that he works hard. Letâs show those qualities some more. I think that especially because he is dyslexic, that itâs harmful to not showcase more diverse sides of him and to neglect the ways that make him stand out. Heâs treated as a kid too often, and itâs okay to make him naive on some things because heâs newer to firefighting, but he needs to grow and show that he is making progress and is growing. I like that they bring up his dyslexia, but I donât think theyâve utilized it as well as they could have, and it would be nice to show how he deals with it and how it impacts him. Just like I want to see mentions of Juddâs PTSD continue to pop up (and theyâve brought it up several times, whcih is nice), it would also be cool to see his dyslexia pop up casually and not as a forced âlook he has dyslexiaâ plot. Like it has to do more for his character. Further, I would never want to see him reduced to just his dyslexia, so I think itâs a careful balance. With Mateo, I just want to see him become a real person because right now, he just feels like a stock character.
Marjan has seen some more development than Mateo. Iâve liked that sheâs joined the Austin Annihilators, and I also enjoy the storyline we just saw with her, which really showed us more of her, and Iâm glad we saw a storyline that wasnât about her religion (because like Paul, she deserves to have storylines that show the full extent of who she is as a person). You see a lot about Marjanâs flaws as well as her deep drive for good in the episode. You see that she cares, but you also see that maybe ego does influence her in a way that isnât always positive (which letâs be real... thatâs true of ANY person haha). Sheâs going in the right direction, but I still think thereâs more developing to do.
Also, Grace seems like she has more development, but she also still hasnât had that much. Like in the episode where she could have been featured more, that was still Juddâs perspective, which I have no problem with. The episode was beautiful, BUT I still want to see a moment that is just Graceâs. 2x10 gave us some of this where Grace was struggling with her injury, and that was excellent. We know a good amount of her history, too, but I want to see the world from her perspective. Also, add in flaws (which again we got a little bit of in 2x10)! I want Grace to be more than the diligent wife who is constantly there to support Judd. She needs to be her own character.
In some ways, theyâve been letting Tommy down too. They started well with her, but theyâve still got some ways to go for me. Weâve seen a lot of her with her family and the same issues of her feeling out of touch and disconnected from them when she goes back to work, but Iâd like to see some fresh storylines on that front!
Carlos, of course, still fails to get all the attention he deserves as well. Heâs had some independent development, but I would like to see him in more scenes with other charaters. I live for Tarlos moments, but I also want Carlos to be separately connected and have relationships of his own that they explore in the show because he should never just be TKâs plus one! Like a lot of the other characters, I donât want him to become an object for other peopleâs storylines. Iâd like to see more of his mental processes and how he deals with his career and maybe see him in action more because we donât see that a whole lot (and Owen somehow became the hero in 2x08, which is okay, but it was also Carlosâ plot so it was a funny choice to me). Anyways, MORE CARLOS. Let us see this wonderful man in all his multifaceted glory.
Even TK and Judd could use more development, but theyâre obviously much better off. Owen, on the other hand, the character weâve seen so much of, also has an interesting development. Weâve seen a lot of him, but I donât know that heâs even developed that well (heâs pretty stagnant even if weâve seen more sides of him) because his storylines are a bit repetitive. That repetition in general is an issue for Lone Star because they tend to latch on to just one trait of a character and then they keep doing plots based on that one trait.
Really the theme here is that without flaws, characters are always going to feel flat. They donât need to be big dramatic flaws like having murdered someone or something equally dramatic, but I need to see the gradients in the characters and see more range of reactions and their personalities. They need to have balance, and they need to feel like they have depth and arenât just being used to tell plots. Moreover, I donât want characters to be props for plots that are not their own. Of course, characters always support other plots, but if they never have any moments that are their own, they become objects rather than actors!

Grey's Anatomy heats up in firefighter-set spin-off â first look | EW
ShondaÂlandâs stake in ÂSeattle is expanding with a Greyâs Anatomy spin-off set at a nearby firehouse â and EW has the exclusive first look!
Jokingly referred to as Blaze Anatomy, the still-unnamed offshoot focuses on first responders whose high-stakes rescues have more drama than Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. âOur hero characters arenât just saving lives, theyâre putting their own lives at risk,â says showrunner Stacy McKee.
The 10-episode drama follows a team â including father figure Captain Pruitt Herrera (Miguel Sandoval), charismatic charmer Jack (Grey Damon), and leading lady Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz), whom McKee calls an âemotional anchorâ for the show â as they complete 24-hour shifts. Greyâs regular Ben Warren (Jason George) launches the new series in March when he trades his scrubs for a spot in the firehouse. How much will the spin-off then cross over with the flagship? Get all the details from McKee below. (Check back later for more first look photos and our Q&A with Jason George.)
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Does the Greyâs spin-off have an actual name yet? STACY McKEE: [Laughs] Nope, not yet! We donât have a name. You should see the bulletin board in my office. We have hundreds of Post-its on it with possible names. Itâs pretty fantastic.
I heard a temporary name jokingly being thrown around on set is Blaze Anatomy. As a joke.
What was the first germ of an idea to do a firefighter-set spin-off of Greyâs? I knew that I wanted to find a show that could match Greyâs in stakes, intensity, and tone. I wanted something where we could be laughing, and crying, and throwing things at our television all in the same episode. I always want to tell stories from characters first, so I just loved this idea of having some kind of big, awesome, hilarious, sometimes dysfunctional work family, and the fire station just seemed to work as a really natural setting for that. Plus, itâs an extension of the existing Greyâs Anatomy world. I mean, how many times have we seen first responders in the background rushing into the breezeway, dropping off patients and leaving? This way, we just get the chance to jump back into the rig with them and drive away.
How do you feel the spin-off is thematically and tonally either similar or different from Greyâs? The show is different from Greyâs because our hero characters arenât just saving lives, theyâre also putting their own lives at risk in the process. The very nature of their jobs will put these characters out into the streets, on location, immersed in their patientsâ lives in a way thatâs a lot more visceral and a little bit more messy. It isnât the perfectly draped body in an OR. Theyâre responding to a patient on-sight, the scene of an accident, their homes, itâs just a different energy. Thereâs no safety net there. Gosh, itâs so similar, too. As much as weâre out and enjoying all of the action, thereâs just so much heart and humor, and sexy time â all of that, plus this great shot of adrenaline.
How much will the show actually cross over with Greyâs? When Private Practice did it, it was more of a major event, whereas shows from the Chicago franchise do it more weekly, but smaller cameos. Will you lean more toward that? Weâll see. I donât know yet. We just finished shooting the pilot, so weâll see what the crossover potential is. Thereâs so much, which is so great. The worlds are so rich. Because they coexist, we have the option to do it just a little or a lot. Weâre open to all of those possibilities. Thereâs just a tremendous amount of cross-pollination that could happen. I canât tell you how many times I would walk into the Greyâs writersâ room and would pitch some crazy, amazing patient story, and everyone would be like, âYeah, thatâs great, Stacy, but all of the cool parts of that happens off-screen. We have to treat them once they get into the hospital.â Now, with this show, I get to do all of that off-screen stuff, so to me, the possibilities for cross-pollination are limitless, because what if we could just do it all if we want?
In terms of the two writersâ rooms, are you talking to each other a lot about how you can interweave these stories moving forward? Of course. Weâre throwing every idea against the wall, and itâs like spaghetti, weâll see what sticks. Whatâs fantastic about this show is because itâs Greyâs Anatomy-adjacent, thereâs the potential for things to connect really, really easily. With Private Practice, even if we did a crossover, we always had to build into the story that there was a change of location, because Private was located in Los Angeles and Greyâs has always been in Seattle. This show takes place in a Seattle fire station that could, in theory, be just a few blocks down from Grey Sloan Memorial. Plus, I know all the writers over at Greyâs and vice versa, so itâll be a very symbiotic relationship.
There have been some pretty memorable patients on Greyâs, particularly the two conjoined by a pole. Would you ever consider doing flashbacks to some of those big moments weâve seen on Greyâs over the years? I mean, maybe, itâs such a cool idea. I do now! I love it. Iâm writing that down. Note to self. Hmm, interesting. Iâm going to the room after this. [Laughs]
Ben Warren is moving from the flagship to the spin-off. Can you talk about how that character is the connective tissue between these two shows? Yeah, heâs definitely a lot of connective tissue. Whatâs really nice is that, for his character, heâs going to be so new to this whole first responder firefighter world in the same way that any of us, our diehard Greyâs Anatomy fans, will be. So if itâs new for him, itâs new for us, too, which will be a really helpful, fantastic way of storytelling. Heâll be fundamental connective tissue.
What can you tease of other characters weâll see on the show? Oh my gosh, theyâre so fantastic. Iâm giddy. Theyâre really fun, strong, a little messed up, and completely unique in all sorts of different ways. Thereâs Andy Herrera, who is played by Jaina Lee Ortiz, and sheâs this pretty fantastic, badass firefighter, and sheâs going to be a real emotional anchor for the show. Thereâs going to be firefighters from all different ranks, from captain all the way down to the newest probie. Itâs a firefighting team of about seven, and three of them are going to be women; we have all ethnicities, all different sexualities. But at the end of the day, itâs just a real family of characters â not necessarily related by blood, but definitely a family.
Miguel Sandoval is playing the captain, so how does he compare to some of the authority figures we have on Greyâs, like Bailey and Webber? Oh yeah, heâs definitely a bit of a father figure to this whole group of misfits in the station.
What does being set in a firehouse afford the show to do that you may not have been able to do at Grey Sloan? We get to go to the accident, we get to run into the fire. Thereâs just this opportunity for so much more action, stunts and big set pieces like that, which is really, really fun. And a firefighter shift is literally 24 hours long, so you have these characters who are both working together â saving lives together and saving each otherâs lives together â and living together for a minimum of 24 hours at a time, so theyâre all up in each otherâs business. Plus, we get to ride on firetrucks, which is everybodyâs dream. I mean, donât you want to ride a firetruck? Itâs the best!
What kind of consultants do you have on this show compared to Greyâs? We basically have the equivalent of that, but for firefighting. We have firefighters and EMTs, who are both on set and consulting on the creative side, so we have a tremendous amount of resources in that way. Weâve also been in communication with firehouses both in Los Angeles and in Seattle, because some of the firefighting specifics are regional, so weâve been trying to make sure that what we do is Seattle specific.
So a lot of rain then? [Laughs] Well, as much as you can do when youâre filming in L.A.
Greyâs has been hinting at Benâs decision to change jobs, but how will the show really start to introduce this spin-off as we head into the back half of the season before its launch? Yes, theyâve definitely been setting the stage for Ben on Greyâs this season, and a little later this season, there will be an episode where weâll actually get to meet one of the characters from the spin-off, just as a story within the episode. Itâll be Jainaâs character, Andy Herrera, and itâs going to be such a fun, fantastic introduction to her character. It will also showcase a really lovely story for Ben, where we get to just juxtapose his two worlds and see his reaction as he transitions from one world to the next. Weâre actually shooting it right now. Itâs going to be so good.
Ben has been training for this, but how might he struggle taking on this new profession? This is Shondaland, you know weâre not going to make it easy for him ever. Heâll definitely struggle and heâll thrive. My goal is for him to have ups and downs, and to experience things that just give him such an adrenaline rush, and help him get so excited, and then in the next breath, heâll face things that will rock him to his core. If we can do that for Ben, and then go on that journey with him, itâs going to be a pretty fantastic ride.
When it was announced that Jason was moving to the spin-off, a lot of fans thought that would spell bad news for Ben and Bailey. Do you want to give fans some hope? I donât think anyone should feel hopeless.
Greyâs Anatomy is in season 14 and just hit its 300th episode. Is that added pressure in launching this show, or less considering this strong foundation? I donât think about the pressure at all. I mean, I was there at Greyâs, I was an assistant on the pilot, I started as a writer in season 1, I was there for almost every one of those 300 episodes, so truly all I feel right now is excitement. Iâm just so thrilled about this show and it moving forward and how it can connect to Greyâs and how itâs just an extension of the universe to me. Iâm just geeked out. Iâm basically a fan first and a writer second, and I just think itâs going to be fantastic.
The Greyâs Anatomy spin-off will first launch in an episode of the flagship slated for March before debuting sometime in the spring. Check back later for more first look photos and our Q&A with Jason George.

Something I noticed while watching a play though of the game is that save for the First level, Match seems to get along with Probie the most out of his three teammates. He rarely snarks/looks down at Probie like he does to Cameron and Izzy. When he does snark around Probie, itâs done more in a playful manner. Like their friendship/relationship evolves into like a mentor/protege or even best friends(or maybe more if you see it like that).
which does kinda make sense since the two tend to be partnered up in missions and Probie did saved his dumbass atleast 2 times in the game
