Don McLean - On the Amazon (1972)
"Snarling equinox
Among the rocks
Will seize you
And the Fahrenheit
Comes out at night
To freeze you...
Wild duodenum
Are lurking in the trees
And the jungles swarm
With green apostrophes,
Oh, the Amazon is calling me."
#favourite lyrics#don mclean#on the amazon#vivian ellis#clifford grey#greatrex newman#1972#the only cover on Don's third album‚ this is something of an oddity; nestled among a clutch of heartfelt songs about love and loss and the#human condition‚ this is his take on a fairly obscure song written for Mr Cinders‚ a minor stage musical from the late 1920s#Mr Cinders was apparently a gender bent version of Cinderella; it doesn't appear to have been a spectacular success‚ nor was it any great#failure‚ but it certainly wasnt being performed with any regularity after 1929; it did have a film adaptation in 1934 which is perhaps the#most likely way McLean might have become aware of the song. it's a bit of fluff‚ really‚ a series of nonsense lyrics but performed with#real gusto by McLean; he's clearly having fun and gives certain words more emphasis‚ rolling his r's or elongating vowels#it's a welcome punctuation of silliness in a rather wistful and maudlin album (altho one i truly love)#Don had it in his live sets for a while too as it has cropped up on modern releases of his 70s live shows#(if anything his exaggerated pronunciation and delivery is only pushed further in live performances‚ to the audible enjoyment of the#audience)
