Hallam Cooley is a definitive head scratcher of mysteries when it comes to researching a person, and their history. He was actually born, Lindsley Hallam Burr - his first name from his paternal grandfather’s middle name, and his middle name his mother’s maiden name, while Burr was his father’s surname. The name Clifford, sometimes pops up in screen magazines and journals, but where it came from is a mystery. I can find it it in no historical or genealogy records. On various ancestry websites his first name has been misspelled as “Bendsley” which seems to be a typographical error. He was born on February 8, 1895, and not in 1888, as sometimes printed. This misinformation stems from his WWI Draft Card registration, in Brooklyn, New York, as well as, various wedding certificates. When it comes to his education, supposedly he attended Northwestern Military & Naval Academy, and the University of Southern California, other sources claim he graduated from the University of Minnesota. Yet no sources have validated, with any type of documentation.. He was supposedly a boxer, according to a few press releases, again nothing can be confirmed of this. As an actor, Hallam got his start in theatre, playing stock and legit plays like The Man From Mexico and Kingdom of Hearts Content prior to entering films, in 1913. Known for over 100 films, he worked for Selig, American, National and Universal, among others. He played opposite Mary Pickford in Daddy Long Legs, as well as, productions for Goldwyn and Paramount. Other film titles include One of the Finest, Girl From Outside, Happy Tho Married, Girl Dodger, The Monster, The Daughter of the Don, What Do Men Want? for Louis Weber, and Babes in the Jungle. . He made a dozen sound films, including Little Man, What Now? and Mary of Scotland with Katharine Hepburn, Fredric March, and Florence Eldridge, he left acting, and became an agent, representing several important actors and directors. According to an advertisement in “Billboard” from November 2, 1946, the Hallam Cooley Agency, was located at 9111 Sunset Boulevard, in Hollywood. Under a banner headline, “Gotta Script to sell?” His name was listed among several other agents, of the day. He also dabbled in assorted real estate ventures.

Most folks find it difficult to manage one career, let alone two, and be a success at both. Yet, Hallam did just that, while as an actor or as an talent agent, his other career was in real estate. In an article dated, October 4, 1925, in the “Los Angeles Times,” Hal was not only building a slated 14 room - five bath, three car garage home for himself, on the NW corner of Bedford Drive and Lomitas Avenue, in Beverly Hills, at a reported cost of $40,000.00 which was expected to be completed by December 1st. Hallam was also a successful licensed broker who was also planning to build other homes. In a subsequent “Los Angeles Times” article dated June 4, 1933, we learn of such a development being constructed in the Three Arch Bay neighborhood of Laguna Niguel, in Southern California. “Hallam Cooley, Inc., will begin work on a demonstration home. It will be of French Normandy type of architecture and will contain six rooms. Structure to cost $3,500.00 and built on a seventy foot lot.”

When it comes to researching his real vs reel life, two film titles seemingly fit the bill as bookends - first as his character of ‘the mystery man,’ from The Brass Bullet, and subsequently his many romances, brings to mind his title character of The Devilish Romeo. His many marriages seemingly fit his ‘Romeo’ mode. His first marriage, at 15 years of age, was to Viola L Johanson on November 6, 1910, in Waukegan, Illinois ended in either a divorce, or annulment. No actual records for either can be found, except mention in a small notation on his second marriage license. Viola later married a George Milton Gardner, in 1913. She died in May 8, 1976, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Hallam’s second marriage was to Edna Clara Dorr, on May 1, 1912, however ended in divorce, with him paying alimony, according to a newspaper article, in the “Los Angeles Herald,” dated October 17, 1916. His third marriage was to Elizabeth Bates, on December 24, 1918, (some sources state on Christmas Day) by the Reverend J. Myers. Who was the same clergyman that officiated the Charles Chaplin and Mildred Harris wedding ceremony, a few weeks earlier. In the same article from “Moving Picture World,” dated January 18, 1919, we find out that his real name is Hallam Burr. It seems his mother deserted her husband, when Hal was just a baby, and never told him his real name, or anything about his father.

Hallam had a son named Ronald, with Edna, born on October 11, 1917, and died at the young age of 41, on January 26, 1958. There were two more children, one named George Aaron Burr, according to a newspaper blurb in October of 1919. The other had no name mentioned, both children died young, neither more than ten years of age. According to brief notices, no names are attached, but the other Cooley children died on February 24, 1927, and August 8, 1929.

Hal had left the screen as an actor in November of 1933, with exception to occasional small bits, and began an association as a talent agent with Harry Weber and Son. In 1935, he was now partners with the George Ullman Agency. He married a fourth time, to a dancer and actress, named Doris MacMahon, on August 1, 1935, with actor Johnny Mack Brown serving as usher. The reception followed at the Beverly Hills home of George Ullman. In the late 1940s and 50’s he and his wife spent their time entertaining and attending social events in Hollywood and Palm Springs. Hal also liked a variety of clubs supporting and belonging to Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Masonic Lodge #233, the California Yacht Club and Hollywood Athletic Club and Masquers.

After the death of Doris on August 30, 1961, at the age of 51, in San Francisco, her remains were cremated. Hallam married for a fifth time, to a Charlotte Maxine (Mina-Minor) Missamore on October 1, 1962, in Maine. Hallam reportedly passed away on March 20, 1971, at the age of 76, in Tiburon, California. Charlotte Maxine (Mina-Mina-Missamore) Cooley died at the age of 76 years, in October, 1993. In trying to piece together their relationship, records for Maxine and Hallam are confusing, to say the least, making a complete telling of their bond next to impossible, with seemingly more questions than answers.

Notes: A different and interesting side note to his life, as noted in a blurb in a 1920s “Los Angeles Herald” newspaper article, stated that “Hallam was a collector of signatures and treasures of film companies.” I often wonder whatever became of these treasures, he collected, after his death.

I've been working with Supervising PD Mathew Robert's office since 2016 on this case- in all it's forms- which originated from atty Lori Clark Viviano's office on real estate fraud.

My x- husband hired her & Christopher Sunnen to complete real estate and Settlements of assets on divorce in 2017.

Instead They hired investigator Mark Milton to beat me into ICU out of Blue Shield Insurance, home, kids, Support, assets, etc. And screamed "crazy" at legitimate appraisals & pre-approvals from lenders on buy out of 1067vNeptune Ave. Beachcomber in Encinitas, cA 92014.

Atty Ashby Clark Sorrenson and Paralegal Grant Funk lied about defending my real estate and family.

They're not licensed for those two important legal tasks so quit with restraining orders and attempted life with X's team of attys dozens of times coupled with slumlordingd and financial cyber abuse to hide complicit lies; similar to #FreeBritney in extreme psychologicial warfare and abuse.

I passed mental competency numerous times and what National Board of Realtors and I have found- as a Realtor for over 20 years in California- is that these attys failed to practice "Ethics" and "Race" laws with officers and judges on endless bribes and slumlordings/murders!

Attys Ashby & Grant bullied me into a plea bargain with gigolo actor rockstar paralegal poser Darin David Joye to hide Marine violence in 2017- I said no to 3 min later in right of recision!

I reported all to US and Global leaders - Congressman Scott Peters stated this to be a "civil emergency" to all legal aid hotlines in Sandiego on a 211 recorded line in 2021 - and said I was to have kids and assets returned! Instead tgey raped me for 10 mo in detention thru 2022! I couldn't even go to tax appointment he set up for me since wrongfully increased. In the last years, an increasing number of American, Canadian and European investors have turned their eyes toward Costa Rica growing Real Estate Market. Forced by their restrictively expensive domestic property markets plus the volatility and insecurity of existing equity markets, investors have found in our country an outstanding alternative for investment.

Costa Rica has been by tradition a democratic and peaceful Central America country. Costa Rica is famous for its neutrality over past and present conflicts in the area, recognized by the world community when the President Oscar Arias received the Nobel Peace Price in 1987 and mentioned in the CIA World Fact Book as "a Central America success story".

Costa Ricans, also known as "ticos" happily boasts that Costa Rica is so peaceful that it does not need an army, and has more teachers than police officers!

Since it is a stable country with extreme natural beauty, more and more people are looking into Costa Rica for a new home or a second home abroad on the growing Costa Rican property market.

Even though Costa Rica current boom on real estate has caused for an inflation of prices, land and house prices in the country are very affordable with prices not even close to those in the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom. Up and above the country strong resale market, currently luxury beachfront developments can start as low as US$80,000 or prices starting just from US$250,000 for detached homes on sizeable plots.

Currently, over 50,000 United States' citizens live in Costa Rica. Besides, Unites States brokers can easily arrange finance for property purchase in Costa Rica, since the United States government considers this country to be a politically and economically stable country.

Foreigners may find in Costa Rica a way of life very similar to the Western or American standards, which strive on a good quality lifestyle. The people moving into our country enjoy the benefit of good infrastructure, excellent communications and good standard of services. Hey! Just been looking through your blog and saw some of your posts re: Jumel, Burr and Alex Jr. While it’s true Chernow told the story in his biography and that’s where the popular idea that he was her lawyer came from, the story has apparently been repeated by Burr biographers long before Chernow wrote his Hamilton. There’s a book called ‘Aaron Burr and the Literary Imagination’ by Charles J Nolan (1980) who mentions the story in Chapter 1: ‘The Man who Killed Hamilton’, he gives his source as ‘Aaron Burr: Portrait of an Ambitous Man’ by Herbert S Parmet, published in 1967. I don’t own the latter book so I have no idea who he gives as his source but it seems that this story has been in currency for a long time regardless of whether it’s true or not.

Yeah, I’m aware it’s been around for a while. My first intro to the myth was in Vidal’s book on Burr in the 1973, which implies Vidal got it from the 1968 book, I imagine. As for the 1980 book (which I haven’t read), from whatever instantly accessible info about Charles J. Nolan I can find on Google, his Staff Page on the USNA website says that he was more-or-less exclusively an English & Creative Writing professor. Granted, you don’t NEED a degree is history to enjoy it, study it independently or even write a book about it, but none of his credits imply anything about him having a background with history and/or historical research.

Also, judging by the title (Aaron Burr & the American Literary Imagination) I assume that it’s less of a Burr biography and more of an essay on all of the different Burr interpretations in fiction books, plays, etc. Nancy Isenberg has a whole section covering the topic in her Burr biography, as well. If that’s the case, if Ron Chernow got his information from this 1980′s book, he’s either grossly irresponsible with his research, or an idiot. Which means that it was probably the 1968 book, or a book printed before that.

But the thing about those historians in particular (ie. pre-1960s historians) is they have a “pass” for lack of a better word; they did what they could with the info that they had, which was mostly unvetted newspapers & washed biographies written either by direct descendants/family members that had an agenda (“make them look as great as possible”), or by third parties with their own agenda. There wasn’t “standards” for research, no one was under any obligation to be truthful--not to mention, it’s hard to be truthful in the first place if your only sources aren’t truthful themselves.

As much as a hate the Hamilton play, the way Lin Manuel Miranda writes his obsession over “legacies” makes a good point; the Founding Fathers cared MORE about their legacies than historical accuracy. Case and point, this is why we didn’t know about Thomas Jefferson & Sally Hemings, or the fact that Alexander Hamilton most likely DID own slaves until relatively recently--because over the last few decades, historians have finally been getting unrestricted access to historical archives that were hidden to “protect” these people’s images. ‘History is written by the victors’, or however that saying goes.

This poses a problem for Chernow because, if he DID get his info from one of these books... that kind of diminishes his credibility, doesn’t it? Because any professional in any sort of field SHOULD know, as a general rule: the older your sources are, unless it’s a first-hand account or written documents, the less likely they are to be accurate.

This is why peer-review is an important step in a lot of fields; academics every few decades will double-check these older books or studies alongside the new information we know & realize that they’re incorrect, or that the conclusion is different than what we thought it was.

This is why we don’t think recognize outdated information like ‘humans only use 20% of their brain’, or ‘homosexuality is a choice’ as fact anymore. Because we double-checked and now we KNOW it’s wrong. Ergo, no academic who wants to be taken seriously is going to cite 3rd party books that are 30, 40, 50 years old/clearly outdated. Unless you’re Chernow, I guess.

But the BIG issue I have with the “Alexander Hamilton Jr. was Jumel’s divorce lawyer” myth (you mentioned seeing my other posts before, so you probably know that Jumel’s biographer discovered that Alexander Jr. was a real-estate broker who temporarily took ownership of her property during the divorce so Burr couldn’t get to it, which means this myth is most likely a misinterpretation), is that even though he may have sourced this from a book (not that we’ll ever know because HE never sourced it).... I have yet to see it repeated in any Burr biography before & since. Which should be a red flag, but Chernow’s confirmation bias was too great, I guess.

The two OLDEST biographies on Aaron Burr that we have, Memoirs of Aaron Burr (1837) and The Life & Times of Aaron Burr (1858) don’t even mention Alexander Jr. or much about the divorce proceedings at all. Aaron Burr: A Biography (1938) also doesn’t mention it at any point when discussing the divorce.

Some Burr biographies that I’ve read before & since Chernow’s book was written (May 2005) that ALSO don’t mention it are:

I haven’t read many biographies on Alexander Hamilton, but my current theory is that this myth originally started in one of his biographies because:

Judging about how Chernow wrote Burr, he didn’t care enough about him to read more than two pages, let alone an entire biography about him.

Like I said, no other Burr biography that I’ve seen verifies this information, so unless he’s an idiot it’s virtually impossible for him to have sourced this from a Burr book.

So, yes, while you’re 100% correct that Chernow isn’t the originator of this myth, he still perpetuated something that a majority of SERIOUS historians seem to be in agreement is unverifiable/false, to an audience of thousands of people & now that’s all you see when you type in Eliza Jumel or Alexander Hamilton Jr. into Google. It’s obnoxious, and he’s obnoxious.

Doris Margaret Kenyon (September 5, 1897 – September 1, 1979) was an American actress of motion pictures and television.

She grew up in Syracuse, New York, where her family had a home at 1805 Harrison Street. Her father, Dr. James B. Kenyon, was a Methodist Episcopal Church minister at University Church. Kenyon studied at Packer College Institute and later at Columbia University. She sang in the choirs of Grace Presbyterian and Bushwick Methodist Churches in Brooklyn, New York.

Her voice attracted the attention of Broadway theatrical scouts who enticed her to become a performer on the stage. In 1915, she first appeared as a chorus girl in the Victor Herbert operetta The Princess Pat.

In 1915, she made her first film, The Rack, with World Film Company of Fort Lee, New Jersey. One of the most remembered films of her early career is Monsieur Beaucaire (1924). In this production, she starred opposite Rudolph Valentino. She and her husband, Milton Sills, starred in The Unguarded Hour for First National Pictures (1925). Laura Wood, a star swimmer and wife of Gaylord Wood, First National Pictures cinematographer, doubled for her swimming scenes because she couldn't swim.

Kenyon's first sound film was The Home Towners (1928). She also starred in Paramount Pictures' first talking film, Interference (1928).

Kenyon was cast opposite actor George Arliss in two films: Alexander Hamilton (1931) and Voltaire (1933). She participated in Counsellor at Law (1933) with John Barrymore. In the autumn of 1935, Doris appeared with Ramon Novarro in the play A Royal Miscarriage in London.

Kenyon's film career ended with a cameo in The Man in the Iron Mask (1939).

Kenyon's performances as a singer grew out of an evening in New York when a manager of concert artists heard her sing at home for some friends. Afterward, he worked with her to arrange a tour. Singing eventually became an outlet for expressing her feelings after her first husband's death. A soprano, she performed in Detroit as part of the Town Hall Series and in Phoenix as part of the All-Star Artists Series, among others.

Kenyon's concerts featured more than vocal performances. Her "Lyrical Silhouettes" tour in 1933 included "characterizations presented in a half-dozen or more foreign languages and dialects." A variety of costumes supplemented the music in the program's segments.

Kenyon played Ann Cooper in the soap opera Crossroads on NBC in the 1940s.

Kenyon continued her acting career in television in the 1950s. She was cast in episodes of The Secret Storm (1954), Schlitz Playhouse of Stars and 77 Sunset Strip.

Kenyon was married four times.

Her first husband was the actor Milton Sills. She wed Sills on October 12, 1926. She was widowed in 1930. She had one son with Sills named Kenyon.

She married prosperous New York real estate broker Arthur Hopkins in 1933. The two divorced the following year, citing incompatibility.

In 1938 Doris married Albert D. Lasker, owner of Lord & Thomas, a prosperous advertising agency. They divorced in 1939.

Her final marriage was to musician Bronislaw Mlynarski in 1947. He was the son of composer Emil Młynarski and the brother-in-law of Arthur Rubinstein.

Doris Kenyon died in 1979 at her home in Beverly Hills, California of cardiac arrest, four days before her 82nd birthday.

n 1922 a newborn girl, Doris Kappelhoff, was named after Kenyon. Kappelhoff grew up to be singer and actress Doris Day. Many years later, Day purchased a home in Beverly Hills that was "a few houses away from [Kenyon's], on the very same street."

Private equity firms should be abolished

In his latest BIG newsletter, Matt Stoller (previously) relates the key moments in the history of private equity, from its roots in the notorious "leveraged buyouts" of the 1980s, and explains exactly how the PE con works: successful, productive business are acquired through debt financing, drained of their cash and assets, and then killed, leaving workers unemployed and with their pension funds looted, and with the business's creditors out in the cold.

Private equity's story begins with William Simon, "a mean, nasty, tough bond trader who took no BS from anyone" whose idea of child-rearing was the douse his children with buckets of ice-water to rouse them from bed on weekend mornings. Simon was given senior Treasury appointments under Nixon/Ford, then became America's energy czar during the oil crisis. He was pro-austerity and blocked the bailout of NYC in 1975.

Once out of government service, Simon set about to create a Republican "counter-intelligentsia" to swing the party to the right. He ran the influential far-right think-tank the Olin Foundation, and dispersed money to fund law and economics scholars who were devoted to discrediting the New Deal and the idea of any limits on corporate power, all cloaked in "scientific" rhetoric.

The darlings of this movement -- Henry Manne, Milton Friedman, Michael Jenson -- promoted the idea of "shareholder capitalism" and the notion that managers have a single duty: to put as much money in the pockets of investors, even at the expense of the business's sustainability or the well-being of its workers. They joined forces with Robert Bork, who had set about discrediting antitrust law, arguing (successfully) that the only time laws against monopolies should be enforced was when monopolists raised prices immediately after attaining their monopolies -- everything else was fair game (Bork is a major reason that every industry in the economy is now super-concentrated, with only a handful of major firms).

Simon's policy prescriptions -- massive reductions in capital gains taxes, deregulation of trucking, finance and transport, and a move from guaranteed pensions to 401(k)s that only provide in old age if you make the right bets in the stock market -- were adopted by Carter and the Democrats, flooding the market with huge amounts of cash to be invested.

That's when the leveraged buyout industry was born. In 1982, Simon convinced Barclays and General Electric to loan him $80m to buy Gibson Greeting Cards from its parent company RCA. Once the company was theirs, they looted its bank account to pay themselves a $900k "special dividend," sold off its real-estate holdings for $4m, and took the company public for $270m, with Simon cashing out $70m from the transaction (Simon's total investment was $330k).

This was the starter pistol for future leveraged buyouts, through which companies like Bain Capital and the Carlyle Group buy multiple companies in the same sector and transmit "winning strategies" between them: new ways to dodge taxes, raise prices, and avoid regulation. PE owners suck any financial cushion out of companies -- funds that firms set aside for downturns or R&D -- and replace it with "brutal debt schedules." The PE owners benefit massively when this drives up share prices, but take no downsides when the companies fail.

Under PE, companies have emphasized firing workers and replacing them with overseas subcontractors, and amassing "brands, patents and tax loopholes" as their primary assets. PE firms specialize in self-dealing, cutting in the banks and brokers who set up the deals for a share of the upside. A company bought by a private equity firm is ten times more likely to go bankrupt than one with a traditional capital/management structure.

Elizabeth Warren has proposed some commonsense reforms to private equity: making PE investors liable for the debts they load their companies up with (including an obligation to fund workers' pensions); ending special fees and dividends; and reforming bankruptcy and tax laws to force PE companies to operate on the same terms as other businesses. Stoller calls this "reunifying ownership and responsibility": making the people who assume ownership of these productive companies take responsibility for their liabilities, not just their profits.

As Stoller points out, critics of Warren's plan say that this would end private equity investing as we know it ("Unfortunately, Warren’s fixes for these problems... would pretty much guarantee that nobody invests in or lends to private equity firms" -- Steven Pearlstein, Washington Post), but of course, that's the whole point.

But centrist Democrats love private equity, as the firms are major political donors, and many's the politician who cycled out of public office and into a cushy job with a PE firm.
