Why Buying Christmas Trees Wholesale is the Smart Choice for Bulk Orders
When the festive season approaches, the demand for Christmas trees surges, making it a prime time for retailers and event planners to consider buying Christmas trees wholesale. This strategic move not only ensures a steady supply during peak times but also offers substantial cost savings. In this article, we will explore the myriad benefits of purchasing Christmas trees in bulk, emphasizing why this option stands out as the most intelligent choice for various businesses and organizations.
The Economic Advantage of Wholesale Purchases
One of the most compelling reasons to opt for wholesale Christmas trees is the significant cost savings associated with bulk purchasing. Retailers often face the challenge of managing inventory costs, which can soar during the holiday season. By buying in larger quantities, businesses can take advantage of lower per-unit prices, thereby increasing their profit margins. This economic strategy allows retailers to offer competitive pricing to their customers while maintaining a healthy bottom line.
Moreover, the wholesale market often provides a wider variety of tree types and sizes at more affordable rates than retail outlets. Buyers can select from a diverse range of species, such as Fraser Fir, Douglas Fir, and Noble Fir, ensuring that they meet the varied preferences of their clientele. This variety not only enhances customer satisfaction but also positions businesses as comprehensive providers of holiday cheer.
Consistency and Reliability in Supply
Another critical aspect of purchasing Christmas trees wholesale is the consistency and reliability in supply. As the holiday season approaches, demand for Christmas trees can be unpredictable. By establishing relationships with wholesale suppliers, businesses can secure guaranteed supplies and avoid the risk of running out of stock when customers are ready to buy. This reliability is paramount in maintaining customer trust and loyalty.
Additionally, wholesale suppliers often have established logistical channels that ensure timely delivery. This aspect becomes especially crucial during peak season, where delays can lead to missed sales opportunities. By working with reputable wholesalers who specialize in Christmas trees, businesses can rest assured that their inventory will arrive as scheduled, allowing them to focus on what they do best: serving their customers.
Sustainability and Quality Assurance
In recent years, consumers have become increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of their purchases. By choosing to buy Christmas trees wholesale, businesses can also advocate for sustainability. Many wholesale suppliers prioritize sourcing trees from sustainable farms, ensuring that they are grown in a manner that supports environmental stewardship. This emphasis on sustainability not only appeals to eco-conscious consumers but also contributes positively to the broader community.
Furthermore, quality assurance is a significant benefit of purchasing from wholesale suppliers. Established wholesalers often have stringent quality control measures in place to guarantee that the trees they supply are healthy, vibrant, and free from pests or diseases. This meticulous attention to quality ensures that customers receive only the best products, thereby enhancing the overall shopping experience.
Building Lasting Relationships with Suppliers
Buying Christmas trees wholesale fosters opportunities for businesses to build lasting relationships with their suppliers. These connections can lead to better service, exclusive deals, and insights into market trends. When businesses invest in building strong partnerships with their wholesalers, they gain access to invaluable resources, such as expert advice on tree care and maintenance, which can further enhance their offerings.
Moreover, a solid relationship with suppliers can facilitate flexibility in orders. If a particular tree type proves to be more popular than anticipated, a good supplier may be willing to accommodate last-minute requests, ensuring that businesses can meet customer demand without compromising quality or service.
Conclusion: Embrace the Smart Choice
In conclusion, buying Christmas trees wholesale presents a multitude of advantages for businesses looking to capitalize on the holiday season. The economic benefits, combined with the reliability of supply, commitment to sustainability, and the opportunity to forge lasting supplier relationships, make this approach the smart choice for bulk orders.
By making informed decisions and aligning with reputable suppliers, businesses can enhance their offerings, delight their customers, and ultimately thrive during the festive season. For those ready to take the next step in securing their Christmas tree inventory, consider partnering with Nordman Direct for a seamless and rewarding wholesale experience.

Hotel Chocolat sees digital sales more than offset Covid-19 store disruption in latest financial year
Hotel Chocolat today said its digital growth had more than offset the disruption caused to its shops by Covid-19 lockdowns.
The retailer says it has evolved from a “UK store-led brand to a digital-led brand” as it reported a 21% rise in revenues and returned to profit at the bottom line. More than 70% of sales were digital, through subscriptions or via wholesale partners, while its own stores played a complementary role in the business. Hotel Chocolat says stores were closed or disrupted for about six months, including peak trading period between November and April - from the run up to Christmas to Easter. Nonetheless, multichannel sales still grew, and grew faster once store reopened.
The retailer and chocolate manufacturer, ranked Top50 in RXUK Top500 research, today reported revenue of £164.6m in the year to June 27. That’s 21% up on the previous year. Top line pre-tax profits came in at £10.1m, before one-off costs of £2.3m. At the bottom line, pre-tax profits came to £5.6m, up from a loss of £7.4m a year earlier.
Trading in the first 13 weeks of the 2022 financial year is now in line with expectations.
Sustainability
The retailer, which says its ambition it “to become the world’s most sustainable chocolate brand”, has launched a gentle farming charter, promising a living income to the Ghanaian farmers who supply 97% of its cacao, in return for sustainable farming practices.
Angus Thirlwell, co-founder and chief executive of Hotel Chocolat, says: “These results show we have now evolved from a UK store-led brand to a globally ambitious digital-led brand. FY21 was a year where Hotel Chocolat improved on many fronts. Our digital and subscription-continuity models surged ahead and our global aspirations racked up more strong growth and progress.
“The continued challenges of Covid-19 pushed us to accelerate many of our existing plans and strategic initiatives, helping to strengthen our financial position, improve our multichannel capability, deepen customer engagement and loyalty, and accelerate the rate of product innovation, whilst continuing to make good progress in our two new and sizeable markets of the USA and Japan.
“A real highlight was developing the new Hotel Chocolat Gentle Farming Charter, applying all we have learned by farming ourselves in Saint Lucia, to ensure all our farming families can earn a living income in return for climate-smart farming. The living income takes into account actual family living costs and realistic farm output. In return for the higher price farmers commit to sustainable farming practices, planting of indigenous shade trees and zero illegal child labour. “I am confident that the strategic progress we have achieved over the past year has improved the performance and prospects of the business for significant years to come.
Multichannel strategy
Hotel Chocolat raised £40m in July 2021, on top of £23m raised in March 2020, to fund steps including upgrading its technology to grow its multichannel business, and to expand its factory.
During the year, Hotel Chocolat increased production capacity by 66%, to the point where it can support £250m of chocolate sales a year. It has raised £40m to expand its factory capacity to 160000 sq ft, and says it will be able to support £500m in chocolate sales in three years time. The Hut Group is managing its fulfilment in its US market. It has also doubled the size of its distribution centre to 200,000 sq ft to house the stock it will sell online in the 2021 peak season.
Hotel Chocolat was founded in 1993 and now sells online and through 150 shops in the UK, Japan and the United States. It has a cacao estate and hotel in Saint Lucia and a cacao-themed restaurant in London.

Finding Reliable Suppliers for Real Christmas Tree Wholesale
As the holiday season approaches, businesses across various industries are gearing up to create a festive and inviting atmosphere for their customers. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by incorporating real Christmas trees into their holiday decor. Sourcing these trees from reliable real Christmas tree wholesale suppliers can be a strategic move that offers a range of benefits, from cost-effectiveness to consistent quality and customization.
The Benefits of Sourcing Real Christmas Trees Wholesale
Cost-Effective Solution
Purchasing real Christmas trees wholesale can be a significantly more cost-effective solution compared to sourcing them from traditional retail outlets. Wholesale providers often offer volume discounts and competitive pricing, allowing businesses to stretch their holiday decorating budgets further. This can be particularly advantageous for larger commercial establishments or those with multiple locations that require a substantial number of trees.
Consistent Quality and Reliability
Reputable wholesale Christmas tree providers typically have established relationships with tree farms and a well-streamlined supply chain. This ensures a consistent supply of high-quality trees that meet specific standards and arrive in pristine condition. By working with a reliable wholesale partner, businesses can be confident in the quality and longevity of the trees, reducing the risk of premature deterioration or unsatisfactory appearances.
Customization and Flexibility
When sourcing real Christmas trees wholesale, businesses often have the opportunity to customize their selections to better suit their specific needs. This can include choosing from a variety of tree sizes, species, and even unique shapes or styles. This level of flexibility allows businesses to create a cohesive and visually appealing holiday display that aligns with their brand identity and the expectations of their customers.
Efficient Logistics and Delivery
Reputable wholesale providers often have well-established logistics and delivery systems in place, ensuring a seamless and timely distribution of the real Christmas trees. This can be particularly beneficial for businesses with tight timelines or limited storage space, as the trees can be delivered just in time for the holiday season. Additionally, many wholesale providers offer convenient delivery options, further streamlining the process and reducing the burden on the business.
Sustainable Sourcing
As environmental consciousness continues to grow, many businesses are increasingly prioritizing sustainable practices in their operations. By sourcing real Christmas trees from wholesale providers who prioritize sustainable forestry practices, businesses can demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship and appeal to eco-conscious consumers.
Increased Customer Satisfaction
The presence of beautifully decorated real Christmas trees can have a profound impact on customer experience and satisfaction. A visually stunning holiday display can create a warm, inviting atmosphere that puts customers in a festive mood and enhances their overall impression of the business. This can lead to increased foot traffic, longer dwell times, and the potential for higher sales during the critical holiday season.
Finding Reliable Wholesale Suppliers for Real Christmas Trees
Identify Your Specific Needs
Before embarking on your search for reliable wholesale suppliers, it's essential to assess your business's specific requirements. Consider factors such as the size and layout of your commercial space, the number of trees needed, and the desired tree size, species, and aesthetic. This will help you identify the most suitable options and ensure a cohesive and visually appealing holiday display.
Conduct Thorough Research
Identifying reputable and reliable wholesale Christmas tree providers is crucial to ensuring a successful investment. Start by conducting comprehensive research to explore your options. Look for providers with a strong reputation in the industry, positive customer reviews, and a commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.
Evaluate Supplier Credentials
Once you have a list of potential wholesale suppliers, take the time to evaluate their credentials and capabilities. Look for suppliers with industry certifications, memberships in professional associations, and a demonstrated track record of delivering high-quality products and reliable service. This can provide valuable insights into the supplier's reliability and stability.
Prioritize Sustainable Practices
As mentioned earlier, many businesses are increasingly focused on incorporating sustainable practices into their operations. When evaluating wholesale suppliers, make sure to prioritize those who have a commitment to sustainable forestry and environmental stewardship. This not only aligns with your own values but can also appeal to eco-conscious consumers.
Negotiate Favorable Terms
As with any business transaction, it's essential to negotiate favorable terms when purchasing real Christmas trees wholesale. This can include negotiating volume discounts, early-bird specials, or other incentives that can help you maximize the value of your investment. Don't be afraid to compare prices and explore different options to find the best deal.
Establish Clear Communication and Logistics
Effective communication and logistics are crucial when working with wholesale suppliers. Ensure that you have a clear understanding of the supplier's delivery schedules, handling protocols, and any special requirements for storage or display. This will help you plan and execute your holiday decor seamlessly, minimizing any disruptions or delays.
Conclusion
Sourcing real Christmas trees from reliable wholesale suppliers can be a strategic and cost-effective decision for businesses looking to create a festive and inviting atmosphere for their customers. By taking advantage of the numerous benefits of wholesale sourcing, such as cost savings, consistent quality, customization, and efficient logistics, businesses can enhance their holiday decor while achieving a positive return on their investment.
Moreover, by prioritizing sustainable sourcing and delivering an exceptional customer experience, businesses can further differentiate themselves in a crowded market and appeal to the growing demographic of environmentally and socially conscious consumers.
Ultimately, the decision to invest in real Christmas trees from reliable wholesale suppliers can be a game-changer for businesses seeking to capitalize on the holiday season and create a lasting impression on their customers. By carefully identifying their needs, conducting thorough research, and prioritizing effective communication and logistics, businesses can unlock the full potential of this strategic investment and elevate their holiday celebrations to new heights.

MY LIFE AS AN ELF
by Robb Schaller
Every Christmas I reflect on the year that I was an elf.
◦ When I was eleven years old, my gypsy mom moved my dad, my sister and me to Scottsdale, Arizona, which was a real western town a desert’s drive from Phoenix. At first we lived in a rental house downtown (now called Old Town) across the street from Loloma Elementary School, where Mr. Udall was my Sixth Grade teacher. I adored Mr. You-Doll and idolized him.
My family had been living in a 5-bedroom ski lodge near Lake Arrowhead in California. One winter, my mother worked as an elf at Santa’s Village, a job that she loved because it was all about fantasy.
Mr. You Doll was the first man I ever noticed, physically. I was drawn to his deep voice, his big hands and the hair on his forearms. I thought about what it would be like to snuggle up with him. I sat at the front of the class and stared at him the whole time. He was very nice to me, to all the kids, and I thought how lucky we were that he was our teacher, and that we didn’t have any of those mean teachers I’d seen around the school.
My dad was having a tough time getting a job, so my mother decided to open a store. She used Santa’s Village as a model and she liked the idea of creating a quaint fantasy environment and dressing like an elf. She had become friends with a young gay guy who worked in a flower shop, The Posey Post, across the street, and she and Tommy dressed up her little commercial rental with a tree painted on a wall, while drinking champagne in the evenings. She had an old fashioned water pump made and placed tulips in front of the storefront. She called her store The Enchanted Forest, not to mention that we were in the middle of the desert and there was a store on Fifth Avenue called The Enchanted Gulch.
The tree painted on the shop’s wall became the armature for cuckoo clocks and other quaint (mostly German) clocks that were offered for sale.
My mom had elf costumes made for herself and for me. My parents bought a house in another school district but I rode my bike every day to Mr. You Doll’s class, I loved him so much. At a certain point the school authorities insisted I move to the Tonto School, closer to our new home, and I was put in Mr. Foote’s class. The best thing about Tonto was the music teacher, Magdalene Anna Coghill. She taught her music class songs in many languages, including Russian Communist fighting songs. She and my mother hit it off right away, and I suspect they became lovers, as my dad was quietly drifting away.
I loved wearing my elf costume, almost as much as I loved the tight cowboy pants that were part of the Scottsdale drag. And I loved working in my mother’s crazy, off-beat little store. So there was a lot of love in my Scottsdale experience. My life outside school was a lot more interesting than Mr. Foote’s class, so I pretended to be sick and stopped going to school.
One day an older woman carrying a shoebox came into The Enchanted Forest. In the shoebox, she had lovely hand-wrought flowers and birds that she had designed and created from wire strips and decorated with sequins. They were quite beautiful and not only did my mother take them for her store, she talked Nellie into teaching her and me to make them. Our living room became a workshop for creating Nellie’s delicate place-card holders, and they were a hit in the store. My mother was soon approached by the party coordinator at the Biltmore Hotel about creating large centerpieces for the Peacock Ball at the Biltmore. Some of the peacocks had their beautiful tail feathers fanned out on the tables, and others had the full display like the NBC theme that was just appearing on the new color televisions that were emerging into popularity. The Society Editor of The Arizona Republic in Phoenix, Maggie Savoy, wrote about the Peacock Ball, the amazing wire and jeweled centerpieces and my mother’s store along with her eleven-year-old elfen son.
My mother’s crazy little store became a big hit, and people visited from California, Colorado and East Coast cities to shop her unusual stock of artistic hand made items.
I was teased mercilessly on the streets of Scottsdale by other kids, for wearing my elf costume as I walked around town. I would run away when a group of kids surrounded me, pointing and laughing. But I was oblivious to the teasing, and I just thought, “You stupid kids; I get to be an elf, and you don’t!”
Tommy had three gay friends, and they all hung out at an apartment above a store downtown. I never knew who actually lived there; it seemed to be communally occupied. They liked to have fancy brunches on Sundays, and they often invited my mother and me. I didn’t wear my elf costume to these parties; I was more inclined to wear my tight cowboy pants and boots. The guys were all creative in their individual ways. Some were excellent chefs as others decorated and furnished the apartment beautifully. They treated me with a sense of fun and respect and included me in adult conversations. One of the fellows had his eye on me, though, in a way different from the others. If I was left in a room with him, he would move as close as he could get to me and rub on his crotch until he was erect. I wasn’t used to this kind of approach, so I would move away from him.
My dad didn’t like my hanging out with “the fags”, and had warned my mom to stop taking me around them. But my dad and I had lost whatever bond we may have once had, and I wanted to be free from his influence. So I was happy in Tommy’s friends’ company, even if the one fellow’s advances made me uncomfortable.
Being the only elf kid in Scottsdale was certainly a unique position. This was a productive year for me on another level. I made jewelry from polished stones and sold retail door-to-door. I sold wholesale to stores, had business cards made, and called my business Robbie Originals. From this point on, I created income for myself. That was the last year I asked my parents for an allowance, because I had learned how to make my own money.
Moving from being an elf in Scottsdale to being a fairy in Hollywood, where we moved next, wasn’t a huge step at all!
Most of my life I’ve been a workaholic, but have always kept a sense of creativity and fun in my work-play life.

Today is the last day of the Pop-up Market at The Shops at Worthington Place! We are here until 5 pm. But... ...due to the wonderful response we’ve all experienced over the past two weeks from our customers, shoppers, friendors, supporters, and neighboring stores, we are hoping to work it out to stay here at the mall through the holiday season and into January! (Cross your fingers, say some prayers, send some good vibes - we appreciate all of the support as we dive head-first into this sudden opportunity!) Not only would you be able to experience Live Dream Create Shop in the Columbus, Ohio area (in addition to our home location in Barberton, Ohio), but we have a couple artisans including Doki Doki Chocolate, Little SkyStone, and illustrator Michael Lea who will most likely be joining us in this joint effort! As always, our mission will be to give local artisans and makers a place to sell their wares, offer shoppers a place to find unique gifts and one-of-a-kind handmade wares, spread our knowledge, learn new things, and provide an artsy hub for others to meet up, network, and spread creativity. We have a meeting tomorrow afternoon and hope to have an official announcement in the next couple days! ****************** If you are an artist, maker, creator, and might be interested in offering your items on consignment, please let us know! (If you know someone who might be interested, please invite them!) With the holidays coming, there is a very real need to stock our shelves with more men’s gifts, sweet treats, tea/coffee, apparel, stocking stuffers, decor, art prints, cards, cold weather accessories, pet accessories, locally authored or illustrated books and games, stickers and coloring books, craft kits, Holiday specific items (any upcoming holiday), Christmas tree ornaments, glass work of all types, pottery of all types, drinkware such as wine glasses and mugs, and anything else artsy, crafty, unique, or awesome! Vintage-y, upcycle, woodworking, and items made from pallets are great, but “primitive” and “country” themed items don’t usually do as well in our shop due to our customer base. We work on a consignment basis, rather than wholesale. Makers are responsible for getting their products to us in person or by mail. We reserve the right to display/sell items in either location and our shop website, as well as display them in a way that makes a cohesive shop. Items need to be handmade in some fashion, rather than mass produced. *Prints. books, and apparel are a couple items where it is obvious to have your original work outsourced for printing - but if you bought it wholesale to resell, we are most likely not interested unless you have altered it somehow. (If you make apparel, prints, or otherwise use images in your work, you need to have done, own the rights to the original artwork, or have permission to use it. Fan art is okay if you made it. Makers are responsible for following copyright rules. Please contact us if you have questions about this.) All sales are tallied the last day of each month and payouts sent out by the 15th. Artists retain 60% of their sales, with the other 40% going to the shop to cover things like credit card fees, utilities, rent, and other overhead expenses so we can keep the lights on and keep selling. Makers are responsible for pricing their own work, getting it to us, restocking, their own branding, etc. Once I finish putting all the inventory in the system, consignors will be able to log in a see a real time reporting of their sales, payouts, current inventory, and history. You’ll even be able to add inventory in the near future, instead of writing it down on silly papers! Preference goes to Ohio makers in the case of similar items - but we rarely have to make that call since everyone is so unique! :) For a copy of the consignment contract, please contact Krystal at [email protected]. Please include your information, the types of items you’d like to include in our stores, and any questions you might have. *************** Okay, that was WAY longer than I anticipated, but we really are looking forward to this new endeavor and meeting new artists and makers and bringing them into our creative family! <3

What We Can Learn From The European Vegetable Shortage
Imagine walking into the supermarket one day and seeing empty shelves in the produce section, higher prices for basics like fresh broccoli and signs warning that you are allowed to buy no more than three heads of lettuce at a time. Throughout Europe earlier this month, this dystopian image of a grocery run was a lot of people’s reality.
During the winter, a large proportion of the fresh vegetables sold in Europe comes from southern Spain, Italy and north Africa. One small region in southern Spain alone supplies 90% of Europe’s iceberg lettuce. But just before Christmas last year, the rain began to fall in southern Spain. Normally farmers would welcome some rain but this turned out to be a deluge in an area that is normally sunny and dry. Crops in the ground simply washed away. As farmers began to recover around New Year’s, a freeze swept across Europe and snow started to fall, even on Spain’s southern beaches. Since it hadn’t snowed in this part of Spain for 30 years, some of those farmers had probably never seen snow on their land before. The effort to replant ground to a halt and broccoli, lettuce, tomatoes, eggplant, spinach, zucchini and artichokes disappeared from store shelves in the rest of Europe.
This was a disaster for Spanish farmers but, in reality, no one went hungry because of the vegetable shortage. Thankfully, the worst outcome for shoppers, cooks and eaters has been some ruined dinner plans. Produce packers turned to California and Latin America for supply (at a premium), large retailers pulled strings, shoppers shelled out more if there was a scarce item they had to have and everyone hunkered down to wait for supplies to return to normal some time this spring. Southern Europe should start coming back on line in March and northern European farms should begin adding fruits and vegetables to the stream in April and May, although the summer fruit supply may be low if many trees were damaged by the cold.
As these things go, this was dystopia lite, but there are three things that shoppers, cooks and eaters stateside should take away from this story. One is that our planet’s changing weather will most certainly affect farmers and, therefor, our food supply. It’s something to be mindful of as we balance the risks and rewards of a global food system. And, when the rain in Spain falls mainly on the lettuce fields, the link between protecting the planet and protecting our food supply becomes crystal clear. As we are all becoming acutely aware, environmentalism isn’t something that happens “out there” in the wild places but rather something that impacts us right here where we stand in the supermarket, at the farmers market, on line at the burrito place and in front of our kitchen fridge.
Did you know that Great Britain imports 50% of its vegetables and 90% of its fruit? Because of this, the British are feeling the European vegetable shortage particularly sharply. Great Britain is a test case for what could happen here if we become too dependent on produce grown hundreds or thousands of miles away. Weather changes, labor problems, pest surges and transportation disruptions all mean that the food supply can be seriously impacted by situations outside our control. Could it happen here? It has, recently, with Mexican avocados and California strawberries. For different reasons, supplies of these items dried up and New Yorkers faced empty supermarket coolers and upcharges for guacamole. So the second thing we can take away from the story of Europe’s produce predicament is that supporting farms within driving distance of our homes is not a luxury but a key part of a safe and sustainable food system. Because so many of our region’s farms depend on direct sales for their income, this isn’t a question of vague good will. Each dollar spent at a farmers market or on a CSA share has an immediate impact on whether fields remain dedicated to crops or surrendered to real estate development.
Realistically, though, New York farmers are unlikely to start growing avocados any time soon. Don’t look for New Jersey corn in January either. Greenhouse growing is increasingly popular in our region but it’s just not possible to grow many of summer’s fruits and vegetables in a greenhouse during a northeast winter, meaning that the third take-away is the value of eating in season. That’s another reason not to despair for the spinach-less British. The BBC quoted one produce wholesaler as saying, "I've been in this trade for 40-odd years and I've never known it so bad, where everything is so dear. I've got plenty of English parsnips, potatoes and carrots but foreign produce is like gold." Bangers and mash, beef stew and fish and chips all fit comfortably on a local, seasonal British winter menu.

🎄 The economics of Christmas trees 🎄
In America, Christmas trees are a multibillion-dollar business. But who’s making the money?
By: Zachary Crockett December 5, 2020
On a frosty day in November, Beth Ann Bossio walks through the brilliant green rows of Douglas firs at Quarter Pine Farm in Smithfield, Pennsylvania, and marks hundreds of trees with price tags.
As the family farm’s head of sales, Bossio has followed the journey of these trees for nearly a decade, from seedlings to 7-foot-tall evergreens.
Now, at long last, they’re ready to be sold as Christmas trees.
Quarter Pine is one of thousands of Christmas tree farms in America. Collectively, these farms sell 25m-30m real Christmas trees to independent lots, big-box retailers, and garden centers every year.
At an average retail price of $75 a pop, these trees make up a $2B+-per-year business.
But what are the economics behind that price tag? Who gets the lion’s share of the profit? And how have Christmas tree producers fared with the growing popularity of artificial trees?
To find out, The Hustle spoke with Christmas tree farm owners, ecologists, and representatives from both the real and artificial tree markets.
From farm to market
Today, 98% of all real Christmas trees on the market come from tree farms.
According to the USDA, there are 15k of these farms in the US, ranging in size from 2 acres to 9k acres. Though the market is largely stratified, the 434 largest farms control ~75% of the total supply.
At any given time, there are 350m Christmas trees growing on these farms in various stages of development — and in a typical year, ~25m will be harvested for sale.
Roughly 2 out of every 3 of them come from just 4 states: Oregon, North Carolina, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

There are at least 15 different varieties of Christmas trees — ranging from the ever-popular Fraser fir to the Eastern red cedar — but most of them follow the same general production cycle.
A Christmas tree begins its life as a seedling, which is typically purchased from a timber firm like Wayerhauser for $0.50 to $1.
When the tree is around 2 years old, it graduates from the nursery to the “big leagues” and gets its own 6’x6’ plot of land out in the field. Most Christmas tree farmers aim to plant ~1.2k trees per acre of land.
What makes a Christmas tree an unusual crop is its extremely long production cycle: one tree takes 8-10 years to mature to 6 feet.
During that time, it’s a financial black hole.
“A lot of blood, sweat, and tears goes into growing a Christmas tree,” said Bert Cregg, a horticulture professor at Michigan State University. “You’ve got the cost of land, road construction, tractors, herbicide, fertilizers — and then all the labor it takes to plant and shear the tree.”
Bossio, of Quarter Pine Farm, calls Christmas trees a game of “patience and unpredictability.”
“It takes so long to make a profit in this business and anything can happen in that time,” she said. “This year, we had a late frost that damaged a good chunk of our Douglas firs; I know farms that had no rain and lost 100% of their trees.”
But even if all goes well, Christmas tree farmers still have to forecast what the market is going to look like 10 years out: Planting too many trees could flood the market; planting too few could cause a shortage.
History has shown that the industry is a case study in supply and demand:
In the 1990s, farmers planted too many Christmas trees. The glut resulted in rock-bottom prices throughout the early 2000s and put many farms out of business.
During the recession in 2008, ailing farmers planted too few trees. As a result, prices have been much higher since 2016.
When trees are finally ready to be sold, they’re graded with colored tags based on height and quality. Then, they’re off to market.
From market to consumer
Christmas tree farms have 2 major sales channels:
U-Cut: They allow the public to cut down their own trees.
Wholesale: The farms cut, ship, and sell their trees in bulk to lots, retailers, and distributors.
About ⅓ of Christmas tree sales are via U-Cut, while wholesale makes up the majority of the market.

U-Cut operations tend to be more popular with smaller farms like Quarter Pine, where families come for the experience. In recent years, the broader agritourism market has tripled in size and become a billion-dollar industry.
In general, U-Cut also a more profitable option for a farm: it can sell a 6’-7’ tree at market rate ($60-$80) and pocket a larger cut of the profit.
Wholesale — a game of volume — is largely dominated by the titans of Christmas tree farming, like Holiday Tree Farms.
Established in Corvallis, Oregon, in 1955, Holiday Tree Farms is one of the world’s largest producers of real Christmas trees. Each season, the farm harvests more than 1m trees in less than 30 days.
Owner Mark Arkills enlists 7 helicopters which run in a continuous cycle from sunup to sundown, loading 1k trees/hour each into tractor-trailers destined for big-box retailers.
From cut to delivery, it only takes Arkills 3-4 days to get a tree to a West Coast location of The Home Depot.
