Tigger warnings for the book: Su*cide and Heavy alcohol consumption
This book was the perfect read for late August and early September, as the last long summer days stretch onwards and there starts to be a bite in the morning air that signals early autumn coming in. It’s a perfect mixture of golden years nostalgia for college days spent intoxicated on sugary alcohol and youthful fervor, and the crumbling facade of prestige that hides how much academia demands of its subjects.
In my paperback copy, there is an interview included at the back of the book that I think adds a lot of context to the story and explains it more concisely than any blurb could. In particular, this line about the driving force of the horror captured my attention:
The prose is beautiful and wandering, the protagonist is empty but in all the right ways. She is a girl with no connections to the outside world and that is what makes her the perfect kind of prey for the monstrously curious scientists and advisors who work, live, and breathe Cathrine House. They may be an elite college, but grades and impressive extracurricular won’t get you into this school. They are looking for young, intelligent and curious minds who won’t mind giving everything in the pursuit of their studies.
But while the protagonist, Ines, and us as readers know the insidious nature of the house and can feel it bearing down on her from the very first day, we also feel drunkenly entranced by it right there with her. The cast of characters is large, viscerally human, and lovable. They lay around drinking sweet wines and eating cake while parading costume jewelry like it’s diamonds, rigorous but stimulating topics of study are grueling, but rewarding, and the hours of work make the midnight parties and kisses in dark corners even sweeter.
Who would choose graduation and uncertainty over another day of stealing snacks from the kitchens and reading in the library until your eyes go fuzzy, only to wake yourself back up by playing a rousing game of monopoly with your friends who feel more like siblings?
It’s the details that make the story so vivid. The little things that make the characters interactions feel visceral and true to the experiences we have, both pleasant and tragic. It is written with a love and care for capturing a- albeit dramatized and slightly romanticized- snapshot of life at school in your twenties. All emotions dialed up to ten, every choice feeling both earth-shatteringly important, and something you’re completely numb to.
If it isn’t clear, I adored this book. I might write an essay more specifically on the beauty of real feeling details and actions to develop characters and relationships and how she utilized that perfectly here. It’s a stunning debut and I would love to read from Thomas again in the future. Please know though, this book isn’t for everyone. The story wanders in a way I find beautiful, but others might find tedious. There is no real “action” until the last 70 pages of the novel and many would call this book pointless or plotless because it primarily serves as a study of setting and circumstance, rather than character or plot.

Book Review #3: Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstances by Ruth Emmie Lang
Rating: 5/5 stars
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Synopsis: The story of a boy who seems to create magic everywhere he goes. The story of his life is told in the perspective of the people who came across him throughout his journey.
Review: I loved this book. The story is told so poetically, and I was completely invested in the characters lives and emotions. This is Ruth Emmie Lang’s debut novel, and I can’t wait to see what else she has up her sleeve. A touching and whimsical read. Highly recommend.

The Songbird and the Sea
by maia_archives 2017
a classic. I first read this fanfic when I didn’t really know/care about BTS and KPOP in general so I had the chance of enjoying well-written characters without being biased in any way (ha, get it?)...
Get ready for a 256k word adventure that takes you back to the era of piracy and into a world of fantastic elements.
Official summary quoted from AO3:
“In a world where dominance of the sea is an endless battle between pirates and mariners, Park Jimin is content living in his little village on a small, uninteresting island by the eastern mainland. He wants nothing to do with the bloodshed of good and evil, the heartless killing of both innocents and condemned, the constant establishment and disruption of order. What he wants is peace, to live his life in the same town he was born in, to spend his days in the beautiful forest, and to use the powers of his Blessed Rune to nurture the home he loves so dearly.
But when his island is attacked by pirates, Jimin will have no other choice than to do as they command and leave all thoughts of peace behind in favor of boarding the Agust, a pirate ship captained by the infamous Min Yoongi, Black Fox of the East.”
I’m not joking when I say this: everyone should read this story.
It’s so well-written, the descriptions are super detailed and the overall feel you get from this story is something else. The strongest aspect is definitely the plot, though. Dude, the plot.
In some parts there are some writing errors (which I will talk about in detail in my review post) but srsly, you could completely ignore those and call me petty.
I should also mention it’s rated E and there are some graphic descriptions of violence.
Here’s the magic link, enjoy yourself:
