"Bah! Don't believe everything your teachers recite from their history books.Everyone wants to paint a powerful woman out to be wicked. How do you think witches got their name in the first place, hmm?" QOTD: What ghost story, movie or show did you love? This month's selection for the #WeLoveMGLit book club was another hit. I enjoyed Ghost Squad so much. It made my heart swell and I loved all the characters, especially Syd's family members. The witchy, ghost story kept me going and the nerdy, pop culture references brought me so much joy and gave me all the nostalgic feels. Lucely and Syd's friendship was endearing and it was great to see how much they had each other's backs. Girl power was on full display throughout the story, with powerful, strong female characters being the heroes. I love how the author kept the story light and fun but there were still little gems of social commentary interspersed within the tale. This is the second story I read that referenced fireflies and their significance of being lost loved ones and I definitely want to learn more about this. My biggest takeaway was that family isn't always blood and through friendships and community you can find just as strong a bond. My one critique would be that the beginning moved a little too quickly which made it feel the characters literally had to spring into action. Overall this is one I will be sharing with lovers of witches, ghosts and magic. This bookdragon rates this one 🔥🔥🔥🔥1/2. I can't wait for the movie. Highlights included: 👻 Ghostbusters, Goonies, video game, 80's & other pop culture references 🦹♀️ Strong females as heroes 👨👧 Healthy single dad household 🧙🏽♀️ Honors alternative traditions, practices, Latinx Caribbean culture 🧟♀️ Honoring the dead, lost family members 🔮 Potions, magic, spirits, cats, ghosts, la chancla TW: HP references (author is working to rectify) #welovemglit #latinxbookstagram #latinxbooks #latinxstories #books #ghostsquad #claribelortega #spookyseason #readcarribbean #bookdragonreviews #bookstagram #middlegradebooks #latinxliterature #readlatinxallyearround #bookclub #spookybooks #bookworm #nerdlife #witches #ghoststory #magicpotion (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGgRGNigbAT/?igshid=t9fwacpzh7jl

Today's #AWeekofLatinxLit prompt is favorite fiction. QOTD: What are favorite Latinx fiction/ historical fiction books? In the Time of Butterflies is one of my favorite books of all time and it is one I gift and recommend frequently. Latinx historical fiction is a genre I can't get enough of and latinx fiction with strong female leads take the cake. I picked up this book after not reading for many years and it re-sparked my love for Latinx stories. I love Julia Alvarez's work but las mariposas will always hold a special place in my heart. This novel has great historical significance and beautiful storytelling. Here are some of my favorite quotes: 🦋 "I'd just left a small cage to go into a bigger one, the size of our whole country." 🦋 It's about time we women had a voice in running our country." 🦋 "Everything is for sale here, everything except your freedom." 🦋 " I was looking at the world through a curtain of tears." 🦋 "Voz del Pueblo, voz del cielo." 🦋 "Sometimes I really feel it here, especially late at night, a current among us, like an invisible needle stitching us together into the glorious, free nation we are becoming." #inthetimeofbutterlifes #juliaalvarez #LatinxHeritageMonth #latinxreads #latinxbookstagram #ownvoices #weneeddiversebooks #bookworm #bookdragon #dignidadliteraria #readersforequality #bibliophile #readlatinxallyearround #bookgal #latinxliterature #latinxreviewer (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGVtbTXApS7/?igshid=45jf2728tg8n

Finally picked up this beauty from my favorite indie bookstore @milmundosnyc . "It always began at night, when You had disappeared". This opening line is calling for me to stay up all night and binge this beauty. QOTD: What is the first line of the book you are currently reading? 🏜 SYNOPSIS: 🌵 From the award-winning author Mark Oshiro comes a powerful fantasy novel about finding home and falling in love amidst the dangers of a desert where stories come to life. Xochital is destined to wander the desert alone, speaking her troubled village's stories into its arid winds. Her only companions are the blessed stars above and enimagic lines of poetry magically strewn across dusty dunes. Her one desire: to share her heart with a kindred spirit. One night, Xo's wish is granted—in the form of Emilia, the cold and beautiful daughter of the town's murderous mayor. But when the two set out on a magical journey across the desert, they find their hearts could be a match... if only they can survive the nightmare-like terrors that arise when the sun goes down. Fresh off of Anger Is a Gift's smashing success, Oshiro branches out into a fantastical direction with their new YA novel, The Stars Around Us. #LatinxHeritageMonth #ownvoices #latinxbookstagram #latinxbooks #readlatinxallyearround #readlatinx #speculativefiction #booksandplants #bookdragon #bibliophile #bookish #bookwormactivities #succulents #markoshiro #eachofusadesert #torteen #latinxstories #pridebooks #YAfiction #YAreader #YAbooks #books #reading #booksarelife #bookworm #lgbtqiabooks (at YUGEN) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGBNcFVANwR/?igshid=xysso0j045ta

Latinx Heritage Month is in full effect! I got some bookmail today I wanted to share it with you all but I also wanted to share what is on my mind today. Reading Latinx stories should a part of your reading life all year round, not just the next 30 days. One of the main purposes of reading is to build imagination. If your reading choices only reflect characters that look and sound just like you, what world are you imagining? Is there room in your world for people with different backgrounds, religions, cultures, neighborhoods, socioeconomic status, languages spoken and hues of melanin? How far can your stretch your imagination if your mind stays closed? More importantly, how narrow is your worldview, if you can only view humanity through your own cultural lens? Here are three great books where you can challenge yourself to expand your world even even farther: 📕 The Grief Keeper- The Grief Keeper is a tender tale that explores the heartbreak and consequences of when both love and human beings are branded illegal. 📘 Sia Martinez & the Moonlit Beginning of Everything: Sia races to save her mom from armed-quite-possibly-alien soldiers, she uncovers secrets as profound as they are dangerous in this stunning and inventive exploration of first love, family, immigration, and our vast, limitless universe. 📗 Miss Meteor: There hasn’t been a winner of the Miss Meteor beauty pageant who looks like Lita Perez or Chicky Quintanilla in all its history. But that’s not the only reason Lita wants to enter the contest, or why her ex-best friend Chicky wants to help her. The road to becoming Miss Meteor isn’t about being perfect; it’s about sharing who you are with the world—and loving the parts of yourself no one else understands. So to pull off the unlikeliest underdog story in pageant history, Lita and Chicky are going to have to forget the past and imagine a future where girls like them are more than enough—they are everything. #hennylatinxchallenge #latinxreader #latinxbookstagram #readlatinxya #LatinxHeritageMonth #latinxauthors #readlatinxallyearround #bookdragon #decolonizeyourshelf #booksarelife #decolonizeyourfeed #diversespines #weneeddiversebooks #ownvoices (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFNhQp5gtgY/?igshid=3w5qr6uq345u
