Helping the Environment (I Can Make a Difference series)
by Vic Parker
Category: Nonfiction book
Publisher: Heinemann Library (2012)
Age range: Content is appropriate for 1st - 4th grade; text is written at a 3rd-4th grade level.
Helping the Environment is centered on various ways to “volunteer”, which is loosely defined as “spending time and energy being helpful”. It offers ways to conserve energy, reduce waste, and be more environment friendly on a personal and community level. Color photographs show people performing different acts of community service. Safety is emphasized - the reader is reminded to use proper safety equipment as well as to notify adults before attempting the various volunteering activities.
Though only thirty-two pages, Helping the Environment offers many different ways for readers to cultivate environmentally friendly habits. This book can be incorporated into elementary school lessons about protecting the environment and community service; some volunteering suggestions may be done as classroom or even school-wide activities (planting a community garden, participating in a sponsored event to raise money).
