what is read or die and why should i watch it
Well basically it takes place during the late 90s / early 2000s. There are people called Paper Masters able to manipulate paper into weapons as hard as steel, into living familiars, or manipulate it telekinetically. At the same time, the British Empire, seeking to reassert itself after its decline, attempted to resurrect great scientists and leaders of the past through genetic engineering, and succeeded but lost control of them.
Tumblr media
The OVA follows Yomiko Readman, a paper master and constantly broke substitute teacher, who is forced to participate in black ops missions for the British government for cash on the side. She is placed in a team of agents to confront the threat of the reengineered historical figures, called I-jin.
Tumblr media
The TV series follows Nenene Sumiregawa, an author and friend of Yomiko's who established herself with a huge debut hit novel. However, Yomiko has disappeared and with her, Nenene's inspiration, so she finds herself in a writing slump and unable to follow up on her initial success. After an attempt on her life, three "sisters," all of them paper masters, are assigned to protect her.
Tumblr media
There is also a manga and light novel series as well, they follow somewhat different continuities compared to the OVA and anime.
Tumblr media
As far as how good they are, your mileage may vary. The tone varies quite a bit between the four properties. I love the first half of the TV show but the back half is a bit weak in my opinion. It also suffers from focusing too much on side characters sometimes. But the highs of the TV series are really high, stuff that's stuck with me for almost 20 years. The OVA is very fun but not very deep. The soundtrack is very good in both cases. I love Nenene a lot and Yomiko is great too, so both benefit in their own way from each protagonist.
Tumblr media
The series has some yuri undertones if that interests you.

It's hard to say "just try out the OVA to see if you like it" because like I said, the tone and vibe across the series is kinda different. You just gotta commit and see really. I will say the first episode of the TV series is one of my favorite first episodes of all time.

Okay, so I finished ROD the TV a couple days ago. It was fucking awesome! The characters were super endearing, I loved the dynamic between Anita, Maggie, and Michelle, also Nenene was awesome, I loved how strong willed and snarky she is. Also Yomiko and Nancy were interesting characters, though I wish we got to see more of them. I also low key kinda ship Nenene x Yomiko. Also, also I'm currently writing a short lil fanfic about noted amphibian fan, Anita, playing Chrono Trigger and getting attached to Frog (side note, I just realized while typing this that Anita would totally be a huge Amphibia fangirl).

Being in the Pennyworth fandom will have you googling shit like "How to fortify an umbrella against acid rain" to try and give a smidge of credibility to the storyline you're plotting.
Meanwhile, the official writers are just giving interviews like, "Yeah, the mad cultists who got turned into super weapons by a drug activated by a popular song sung by Alfred Pennyworth's pop star girlfriend survived the nuclear bomb that got dropped on London, so now there are these irradiated mutant cultists cannibals roaming the streets of London who go ballistic for 70s pop ballads. What do you mean, 'how did we plan to resolve that?'"

Was anyone going to tell me that Moritz Brenner is a real, actual, canonically queer character, or was I supposed to find out for myself?!

can I say something?
something I've started to not quite dislike, but not appreciate much about pjo was the way rick riordan talked about and characterized some gods- like Ares (still understand why he did that tho).
personally, as a kid who grew up reading myth after myth, I've always loved Ares, and when I re-read after years the pjo books some months ago I noticed how some of the gods are kind of lazy-written, or simply treated badly- as characters ofc.
one of them is Ares.
Ares is kind of impossible to appreciate in the books.
the only good moment he has is the "that's my girl" with Clarisse (but it still happened after years of neglect so yeah, not so great at the end), and then it's all bad, and he kind of gets ignored in favour of other gods- like Poseidon, who does mistakes but still can be appreciated, and is someone we could even relate too. Hades, Persephone, Hermes, Apollo and Artemis, they were we can say well-rounded second characters.
Demetra, Dionysus (except for the "protect my son" bit in the fifth book loved him for that and in general him with pollux and castor) but especially Aphrodite and Ares are just there so symbolize something Percy and us readers dislike.
(this is about Ares, but I could talk ab Aphrodite for hours (another day bud))
Ares is fucking cool.
he's the god of war, so unlike some of his other relatives his domain can never get weak, because humans are always fighting, there's always a war somewhere- but the way rick wrote him kind of erased the part where people prayed to him in order to not only beat someone and win a conflict, but also to survive one.
who attacked first prayed for Ares to help them, who was attacked and fought back prayed for Ares to make them survive and exit the conflict as winners, because there are always two sides in a war, and Ares represents them both.
but I can understand why rick ignored this part of him and reduced him to an extremely strong god who loves conflicts- and why, as a 11ys kid I didn't really got that. I was just sad that my fav god wasn't a cool guy. now I'm older, and I notice that, but still I don't blame him for writing Ares like that.
it's a kids book, and I can't pretend from it to be the greatest thing ever written, and I can appreciate these books with ease.
(and yk, war may be natural, but it doesn't mean it's right, so it's normal that a kids book characterised the god of war as someone despicable.
every god is despicable (as it should be, not so strange from the god of death to steal from earth someone young and all springy and trap them in his realm, it's kind of how life works!!!), but it's hard to explain kids how sexual assault and murder were their breakfasts and lunches, while war=wrong is easy and right! so)
but the show changed that?
it's changing a lot of things, but first of all it's dealing with things about greek gods that were ignored or set to the side in the books- the way it so heavily say, again and again, how the life they expected demigods to live was wrong.
but, honestly, I simply loved Ares.
not only for the twitter fights, but for his talk with grover mainly.
and even though grover said those things in order to manipulate him into telling him what he wanted to know- it was more than nice to see how they fixed and perfected an almost ignored character (in the books a strong, too prideful and not-at-all wise god).
can't what to see what they'll do with aphrodite my wife and pride!!!!

Happy Birthday, Sara Lahti! (January 16)
Sara is a voice actress, known mainly for voicing Maggie Mui in R.O.D the TV and Chuukou Kyocho in Ikki Tousen. She is also a podcast host of Creatrix Culture and the creator of the YouTube channel, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram pages, the Sara L Show.
Jessica D. Stone first met her in person at Anime Expo '05 nearly twenty years ago (in the year of our Lord 2025, I swear, we are NOT old; like animated characters who rarely age, it shall be a well-known fact that voice actors age backwards - dead serious, it's true). She is nothing less than beautiful, hilarious, a great actress and a wonderful content creator.
It's awesome to have reconnected with her through social media (which was barely a thing in the ancient history of Primitive 2005, so like, yeah, our ages are showing).

Slight spoilers for Blood & Gold but if you read any part of it, Bianca and Marius’ breakup fight is one of my favorite parts of the series. It starts with
Bianca: I feel sorry for you.
Marius: Thank you, honey, I really needed that -
Bianca: No, no...that was meant derogatorily, not consolingly.
And then it gets better. I’m not holding my breath for Bianca onscreen in AMC IWTV but if we DID we’d be getting domestics to rival “I heard your hearts dancing” and “align it with Ursa Major”
I do LOVE knowing that, thank you anon 🥰!
