Unfortunately after Re5, Jordan retires from agent work entirely due to her trauma and physical condition. She is in no way shape or form capable of even doing it as from 2005-2009 Wesker forbid her from doing any work, instead being more of like a housewife, you can find the details about this in another ask post I got here. Instead of Jordan, her twin brother Jaiden works alongside Chris during the events of Re7-8!! (I am going to struggle answering any questions about this, Re6-8 are the only mainline RE games I haven’t played <\\3)

Content? She wouldn't say that, but Jane is smart enough to know that Wesker's idea of tolerant still doesn't mean it's an appropriate time to start nitpicking his word choice.

Still, it's always been curiosity that's driven her, even when her conversational partner is far from pleasant (and indeed, the condescending edge to his tone makes her skin crawl; it's one thing to be outran and stabbed, it's a whole other to have someone talk like you're beneath them on top of it all).

There are a few questions in her mind, the most pressing of being what is his fucking problem, but she chooses a different one as it doesn't take a genius to figure out the outcome of that.

From behind his dark glasses, his red eyes glow with a unintended intensity. He is uncertain if her echo was meant to be mocking, or some stumble within her mind. Though he always seems to lean towards cheek when it comes to the ones on the other end of The Fog. He can't help but be cruel. Condescending in a way that feels like a knife being dragged along bare skin.

leon never forgot about you though. while you two spent those years apart, getting older, he became meaner. your words really got to him, because now? there was a threat to your people. a pirate captain and his crew, targeting the already small population of your kingdom. the king and queen were doing their best to ward them off, but what could rlly be done at that point?

your mom and dad, as mentioned before, weren’t all that kind to those with a lower status :/… leon had used this to his advantage and got together with all of those who had been wronged by the royal family. and that number was enough to hold off against literal soldiers like jfc…

of course, leon and his crew arrive and start fucking everything up. burning down houses, robberies, literal manslaughter. you could only watch as your mom and dad panic abt wtf to do. your dad’s men are dropping like flies, because pirates play dirty whilst knights play with honor. it’s a fucking bloody mess (◞‸◟)

it doesn’t take long before the pirates get to the actual castle. king and queen are quickly taken care of, now the only one left is you. but you aren’t hurt yet—held still by other pirates, yes, but you haven’t gotten stabbed like some unlucky people. and then u have the (not so) great pleasure of meeting the captain himself :3

leon’s mocking ur confused expression, jeering at how scared you look. considering you’ve completely fuckin forgot this guy you demand to know who he is—to which leon haaaappily reminds u abt the friendship you two used to have before you just poured it down the drain.

“you didn’t love then me because i was no one, but now, you’ll love me because i’m someone” is basically what he tells u. he was no longer poor, considering all the shit he’s robbed, and now that he actually has a reputation compared to his past self. and now that the people who told you to stay away from him are now gone, he was happily going to make up for lost time with you, whether you liked it or not.

story wise, yeah, the colonized people in re5 are all victims of the real antagonists. from a gameplay perspective, they are enemies you have to defeat in order to progress. it’s unavoidable. and technically, since most of the info that gives people genuine sympathy for the victims is hidden in files that plenty of players won’t read, even that sympathy is optional.

ok ok i have taken my Notes and pieced together my actual incomprehensible yet more coherent thoughts on death island. spoilers below!!!!

we’ve already been over the “why did none of the women age” thing so i won’t beat a dead horse again but. yeah.

i really really love how this movie actually acknowledges what jill suffered through in RE5 AND finally brings up how piers affected chris. granted, it’s not in any substantial, deep way but i appreciate that this movie actually followed through with the emotional toll those situations brought jill and chris. (i’m a PTSD bitch you know i love me some post-trauma exploration)

during their convo, chris says, “sometimes the nightmare sticks with you, and if you aren’t careful it’ll swallow you up.” and i think that’s such a perfect encapsulation of the movie. chris and jill are reeling from something in their past, and there’s a very distinct parallel between the villian and our protags in terms of: i lost someone/something dear to me and that has haunted me up until this point.

dylan lost his best friend. chris lost piers. jill lost HERSELF.

also dylan kinda had a point like.. our favs are all just pawns for the government in some way or another (leon especially)… aka the very people causing the suffering that our favs keep trying to stop. it’s ouroboros in a nutshell. however, his plan of worldwide extinction via cannibalism is not the way to uh. solve that. i think it was chris who said “you can’t save a world that’s already dead” or something and yeah!! ur so right king!!!

leon was just kinda… there. doing cool shit. honestly, i don’t think he was really needed in this movie. i think they threw him in for the fans tbh cause his main beef was with maria, and even that fight was anticlimactic as all hell.

claire and rebecca weren’t really necessary either from a theme standpoint. they did things in the plot, of course, but their presence also felt kinda tacked on, if that makes sense. it genuinely felt like chris and jill were the main main characters this time around.

also there’s this weird vibe with how the characters interact with each other. claire and chris talk to each other like colleages, and leon and jill act like they’ve known each other for years even though they just MET. please just let them hug just once just ONCE!! we moved past fist bumps 20 years ago!!!

i say all this to declare: i really really wish these characters were given time to shine and their relationships explored while the action took a backseat for just a minute. because there is SO SO much potential here and i’m gnawing at the walls just waiting for some kinda character payoff that never comes!!!

but also, do you think the writers intended it to be read that way? i know RE4R's story is good, but for the writers to be so subtle about it, they gotta be amazing at writing and delivering and i dont think anybody who writes the story for RE is at that level yet.

it's not that i dont want to believe in that take, but i also read ur post about how u dont apply "death of the author" and i just think "do the writers actually think like this? it wouldn't wrong for us to think this way but do they think of it like that?"

so i found it quickly because it's in my meta analysis tag. i'm very careful with that tag and only use it for posts that i think raise important points that i might want to reference later. this was one of them.

and i actually love the second part of this ask.

i don't personally feel that RE4make's writing is that sophisticated. it's sophisticated for RE -- but there are so many other games that have such better storytelling. SH2, spec ops: the line, hades, alan wake, disco elysium -- just off the top of my head -- are so rich in storytelling and so creative with how they convey it. even the evil within -- which was also a mikami game -- had an incredibly dense story that took effort and grit to fully unpack.

literally all that hirabayashi did with RE4make was hear mikami's pleas to fix the story, look at it, go "how can i do this without fucking up the gameplay loop or structure?" and decide that the easiest way to do it was by putting an emotional throughline in the game centered on leon and ashley's relationship -- which made sense to do, because that also lines up with the gameplay contrivance that the game is centered on.

he's also been working on RE since 0, so he's intimately familiar with these characters and the possibilities they hold. he was RE6's producer, so he knows that suicidal ideation is a part of leon's character -- just as an example. because it's in RE6 that leon admits to having been suicidal in the past.

we also know that he loves fairy tales. he wrote RE5's script, and RE5 is a modern horror fairy tale. sheva even has an alternate costume literally called "fairy tale." and, at its core, RE4 has the basic plot of a classic fairy tale. the Hero storms the castle, slays the Dragon, and saves the Princess. it's so easy to convert that into a more Proper fairy tale by tweaking the relationship between leon and ashley.

and the romance tropes and references he uses are very rudimentary. like, if you look at my posts, it's like... romeo & juliet and sleeping beauty. this is hardly a romance aficionado's deep dive into the romance genre.

RE4make is babby's first step into deeper storytelling in the video games medium.

so i really don't think that it's a stretch to say that this was his intention.

if you want to be really anal and pedantic about it, you can say that his intention was to make the story into something coherent and fluid, and the romance just happened to be a byproduct of that because that was the easiest thing he could reach for, but like.

to use the structure of romance stories and to consistently follow the imagery and symbolism and references of classic romances -- his reason for doing it doesn't matter. the fact remains that he did it on purpose, and it's reflected in the final product, and so that's what the story is.

i said this in another post, so i'll just paste it here:

So, sure. You could look at RE4make as a story about a man who’s just doing his job and saves the president’s daughter because idk he’s a badass and that’s just what he does. And he overcomes his trauma about Raccoon City because he actually saved a person’s life finally, and it wouldn’t have mattered who it was; it just happened to be Ashley. Sure. You could. But you miss the fucking point of what the storyteller(s) were trying to do. You miss the intention of the developers paying homage to RE4OG being such a huge part of so many people’s childhoods by turning the story into a fairy tale. You miss the parallels of Leon becoming a broken husk of a person because of failing re: Ada, and Leon finding his smile and his kindness again through Ashley. It leaves you with a shallow story where shit just kind of happens and Leon’s a cool dude who overcomes the odds all on his own because he’s so cool and strong. And you’ll never be able to convince me that that’s how the devs wanted their story to be read. Not with the deliberate layering of themes and imagery and allegory that they’ve folded into the narrative. And you’ll never convince me that all of this was just a coincidence, either.

Need you to know that I went from liking/tolerating Wesker years ago to hating him because of DBD. It's SO annoying going against him continuously. BUT, following you has made me tolerate and appreciate him more (looks like I don't hate Wesker just hate DBD players lolololol). I don't blame you!! Wesker players in dbd are very *interesting* at times, and I want to say that for a solid chunk of 2023 I actually loathed him a bit 💀💀. Omg that last part is so flattering you have no idea 😂 I’m happy to answer questions!!!

My personal favorite of the remakes so far is RE2, I love the characters and music and atmosphere and everything about it. BUT after playing the original it became really glaring to me what wasn’t done “properly” — mostly the way the A and B scenarios had no real continuity between them, and how most of Leon and Claire’s interactions were cut, that was disappointing. So I think the best executed remake is RE4, because it really felt like an upgrade in essentially every way.

EDIT: WAIT I CAN’T BELIEVE I FORGOT RE1. RE1 REMAKE IS MY FAVORITE REMAKE. That game is absolutely loaded with atmosphere and cool visuals and great music and AGHH I love it so much. Idk how I forgot that one!!!

And I am DYING for a Code Veronica remake. I really enjoy the story in CV and I’ve read the novelization and enjoyed that a lot too, but the game is definitely outdated and has its… quirks? I think it’s the most in need of a remake. I also feel like Steve has a lot of potential as a character and I really would like to see how a remake would handle modernizing him!! Especially after how they fleshed out Ashley as a character in 4R, I want to see another widely disliked character getting some love!

As for RE9… I honestly don’t know what to expect from it. I definitely want them to avoid repeating the RE5/6 mistake and stick to survival horror. I feel like that’s what they do best and I’d be really sad if RE becomes an entirely action-oriented series again.

I also would like to see one of the core female protagonists take the center stage again, Claire especially. I adore Leon and Chris is great too but I’m a bit tired of them both at this point lol. There was a “leak” awhile ago that claimed 9 would be about an older Claire somewhere out west, with folklore-themed monsters of some sort (like skinwalkers sort of??). I don’t believe leaks unless there’s hard evidence, but I’d really love if we got something along those lines!
