Okay! Favorite lines/lyrics from Pebble Brain. I'm including one from every song. If a song has multiple good lines I'll note it with a * and add them on a later post.
1. Oh yeah, You Gonna Cry: You know we talk about the dumb shit you do / In the back room of the bar / In the back seat of my car
The fucking cockiness of this has me obsessed. Like this is the most confident Wilbur has ever sounded in a song from a lyrical perspective. I have a feeling it's more of a "character" song than actually him, but I'm obsessed with the vibes of it. Cocky Wilbur is a fun character, and he pops up through the whole EP, but that line, that line is the best of the arrogant ones.
2. Model Buses: My mother says you're up your own arse /Like a stagehand at puppet show
I hope his mom actually said this.
3. Concrete*: And the consequence of your desperation / Is the people on the night bus have to listen to you
I have been this drunk person on public transportation and this hits different.
4. Perfume: Your tongue is razor sharp /I miss when it would fight mine
I mean, you can take it as him missing arguing with this person but you're wrong and oof is this a good line.
5. You'll Understand When You're Older*: She says the country's sweating out a fever / A fever born from what you do / And what kind of pressure did they put on you
Wilbur Soot critiquing English culture is a new but I'm here for it in all forms. There's just this vague condemning of this office culture mixed with feeling like the "she" in the song is more of a working class character and the other person is Not. I just have a lot of feelings about this song and it's a lot to do with how English music loves to talk about classism and it drifts into things when you don't expect it.
6. The Fall*: Under the weight of some Sertraline / A couple Prozacs and now I'm pumping dopamine / There must be more to this
Look, I have some musical and vibe issues with The Fall but the lyrics are great. I have to pick this one out of a sea of great lines because it's just so inspired by The Wombats and I like the weight of talking about how prescriptions impact world views and your own motivations and your ability to just get through it all.
7. It's All Futile! It's All Pointless!*: You'd rather he was inside than beside you.
I've talked about this song before, but this is still my favorite line. It's sexy and devastating at the same time. The whole song has some great lines and the "Anything to make me feel less numb" was such a close second.
#it's late so i'll definitely self reblog tomorrow#but god i love how much wilbur's writing has grown#he can be clever and emotionally devastating in the same song
