In other boring Mom news I shopped the Kyte Baby clearance sale today which was a whole THING. I knew from the mom internet it would be a madhouse, and things were indeed disappearing out of my cart as I shopped, including the thing I wanted most (a sleep sack in a particular print). But don't worry, I still managed to spend over $150 and got free shipping.
#bc I couldn't get the sleep sack the most expensive thing was a cardigan for ME#i deserve soft bamboo rayon too

Anyway time to talk about knitting
So basically my WIPs are:
The cloud blouse by petite knit - working this one up with lion brand truboo (in the color white) rn, which is a sport weight(?) 100% bamboo rayon yarn. Don’t ask me why I chose this when the pattern calls for two strands of mohair okay I didn’t have the budget for that. But I think the bamboo will be very lovely so wear in like spring time or as a layering piece. I’m incredibly close to finishing this - I’m basically half-way done with the second sleeve so after I finish that I will just have to do the neckline and it will be done! Tbh though I was getting bored or just endless stockinette sooooooo I started another WIP on Monday (11/4) of this week which is -
The storm sweater by petite knit :))) - okay so I bought 7 skeins of drops karisma in the color sage, which you may be thinking that is certainly not enough for an entire sweater. Which I also realized after actually looking at the pattern lol. So I’ve got more coming the mail, but in the meantime I just was so excited and eager to start on this sweater that I just couldn’t resist. I’m honestly glad I started it cause it’s been a blast to work on, and honestly I’ve really need the distraction. So now after work on nearly non-stop (work is sooooooo slow) after 4 days I finished the back yoke and the left shoulder and I’m now onto the right shoulder and I would very much like to connect the neckline today, but we shall see. My hands are in a bit of pain to be frank. But my dream is to finish the sweater in time to wear it to thanksgiving dinner :)
And those are my WIPs for now. Eventually I would really love to knit the Braidy Loop cardigan (idr the creator of that tbh) but I would really love to invest in some nice yarn for that, definitely mohair and either merino or alpaca. I think my dream would be to work it up in like a bright cobalt blue or smth. But alas, yarn is soooooooo expensive so I’m gonna sit on that for a bit.

I thought it would be interesting to look at ravelry stats. I was surprised at how many patterns are apparently designed for acrylic, but when I restricted my search to “knitting” (as opposed to crochet, machine knitting, etc.) and sweaters (cardigans, pullovers, etc.), the patterns looked much more familiar.
I grouped the fibers by broad type. Silk is sometimes just included in “animal”, but it isn’t hair and is really its own category, while the other animal fibers are all much more similar to each other.
Then I have regular plant fibers, rayons and their relatives, which use plants as raw materials but involve a lot more chemical processing than something like cotton, synthetics, and the ever-mysterious “other”.
Maybe it’s possum. I saw a possum blend from NZ the other day at the store.

Hey you brilliant person, I need help. You're dying tutorial was fantastic, and I am wanting to dye a cardigan. Hooooowever, it's 62% Rayon, 33% Nylon, 5% Spandex. I'm assuming I probably can't use a dye meant for natural fibers due to the nylon and spandex content, right??
Soooooo if you’re aiming for a really even, saturated color, you have a few options. You can:
Dye it twice using Procion dyes, the first time using the normal soda ash method to bind to the rayon, and the second time using a vinegar or citric acid method which will bind to the nylon. You may still get some mottling but the colors will be very wash-fast.
You can use RIT all-purpose and do two rounds of dye, once with salt, second time with vinegar. It is effectively the same idea but you may be able to get away with using the same dye bath both times.
Thankfully rayon and nylon both take dye extremely well, so there’s a chance that even after one dye bath the color might already be good enough. That’s why I suggest doing the soda ash dye bath first, because your cardigan is 2/3 rayon. If you want a pastel or medium color you probably won’t need to do a second round.
Also for procion dyes, rather than trying ro get the dye bath super dark the first time, it’s more effective to do two rounds of moderately saturated dye to open up more dye sites in the fabric and get more thorough coverage.

Interweave Knits: Summer 2023
Summer knitting is here which means lighter yarns and shorter sleeves. There are 9 tops and a cardigan in this issue along with an intriguing article by Karen Frisa which has broken me forever from not swatching. She knitted then blocked and also hung four yarns used in this issue; some of them grew in width or length and if you then multiplied out the 2 extra stitches in the 4 inch swatch to determine the effect across an entire garment, you realize how far off your sizing could become. Better to spend some time in the beginning, I now think, than to despair over time wasted in the end.
But on to the patterns. On the cover is the Branchport Cottage Top by Laura Barker which is a top-down circular construction with short rows over the yoke and a shaped waist. its is a full 4 out of 4 for difficulty because of the complexity of the lace stitch yolk. It is made of Elsebeth Lavold Hepathy a blend of cotton hemp and modal, which is a kind of rayon.
I give you a close-up of the front shoulders of the Orlaya Shell in a pale pink by Elena Dimchevska. It is worked in the round from the bottom up with a more solid stitch pattern across the shoulders. It has a very simple shape and then a charted lace stitch. It is 3 out of 4 for difficulty and is made of Drops Cotton Merino which is just what it sounds like.
Far simpler to complete, but needing care for its eyelet argyle motifs is the Serene Summer Pullover in minty color by Fiona Munro. It is a 2 out of 4 for difficulty and is a bottom up, circular needle project made in Quince & Co Wren another wool and cotton blend.
The pale blue green tee is done with wrapped stitches and called Patio Nights Tee by Debi Maige. It is a 2 out of 4 for difficulty despite having shaped shoulders. The yarn is Shibui Knits Pebble in Crete, a blend of silk, merino and cashmere.
Cables and a lace stitch that looks like wheat appear in the V-neck Abundant Tee by Blazenka Simic-Boro a 3 out of 4 for difficulty made of Hikoo Rylie in Pearl which is a alpaca, silk, linen blend. While cables always strike me as a cold weather feature, I want to try the lace stitch on something else.
The cover garments is the only pattern here that has waist shaping, the rest are rectangles, so you may want to add your own shaping if you swim in rectangles as I tend to do.
You can find this at your local yarn store, or online here: https://www.interweave.com/product-category/knitting/knitting-magazines/

Fabric rambling
Finally gave up the ghost & pulled out the last of the cotton blend sweaters for donation yesterday—which I’d saved hoping I would become more tolerant of cotton blends but alas I seem to be just getting more aware of (& irritated by) blends, instead. Also snagged out the lingering summer clothes for storage & assessed the remaining items. Found 3 synthetic shirts that haven’t bothered me the last times I’ve worn them (made of rayon, which is plant-derived in a round about way similar to rice crispies being rice in a roundabout way) but I also haven’t worn them in a while so I’ll give them another few months before I decide whether to pull them, too. I’ve been looking at wool skirts on eBay, there’s a few I like just in my price range bc I’ve noticed I haven’t worn the synthetic skirts I have either. Typically I can wear an under layer to prevent my skin from touching them but I still seem to avoid them… I wear the wool skirt I have, often! So maybe that’s the next category to slowly replace. The silk shirt I snagged off eBay for $15 is the nicest thing ever. I can def see myself wearing wool bottoms (pants/long skirts), silk tops (if I can find more reasonably priced), & wool cardigans/sweaters all winter long. I would like some wool leggings but again they’re impossible to find in my price range &/or with a high wool content. I seem to be finding 40% wool maximum, & though I understand that elasticity is a concern I don’t think I can deal with polyester hugging my skin all day. I might opt for tall wool socks instead.
It feels really lovely to open my closet & not have to wrestle my brain into choosing between a variety of clothes that feel uncomfortable to wear in various degrees. I get dressed in record time bc everything I have to reach for is a material my body can tolerate. & I feel like I’m finding my style too, a mashup of comfortable, practical, & a style I like on myself. I have had issues with clothing for as long as I can remember, my mom said that as a toddler I’d yank off all my clothes as soon as she turned around. I have always been anxious to get out of social situations so I could go home to disrobe. I know it may seem a silly thing to focus on for many people, the material of clothing, but this whole endeavor has made my day to day life so much more palatable!!

Every time someone incorrectly calls a cotton/rayon/poly blend "linen" on ebay (I look at a lot of cardigans ok) I die a little inside and remember where textiles were so sososososososososoo lovely.
If you've ever wondered what's going on in my head it's either thinking of fun smutty photo shoots or bitterly complaining about improperly identified textiles, crochet being called knit and general sadness about the enshittification of clothing (all in my head, I only talk about it with a few ppl who feel the same way)
