what is a clipping mask and how do i use it?

clipping mask is a tool that basically crops your layer to the layer below that! so lets say you have three layers, the first layer is a blue background, the next  layer is a black circle, and the layer above that is a picture of pattern. if you enable a clipping layer on the pattern layer, it makes it so where the pattern is only showing on the circle below it, and not the blue background
