#34: Ray Price - Night Life (1963)
Genre(s): Country, Honky-Tonk
Night Life was the death knell of honky-tonk as it succumbed to the crossover pop sounds of the Nashville Sound. Ray Price was, at this point, a well-established name in the country-western scene. He had a Frank Sinatra sort of sound to him, so the crossover potential is obvious in hindsight. This approach was a massive success for Price, earning him the first of many #1 albums to come. But, we don't care about chart success round these parts, how's the music?
As I've mentioned in the past, I'm not typically a big fan of crossover pop country. But I do have to say, his backing band (the Cherokee Cowboys, a name I don't have the energy to address) is in top form. The iteration of the Cowboys on this LP features a young Willie Nelson on bass, the legendary pedal steel player and innovator Buddy Emmons, classic country pianist Floyd Cramer, and future outlaw star Johnny Paycheck on guitar. Buddy Emmons really carries this album for me. I'm usually pretty lukewarm on pedal steel, but Emmons really has a sound like no other. The rest of the band rises to the occasion as well. That being said, Price's delivery doesn't do anything for me. There's an air of schmaltz to it that is incredibly anti-country, which combined with the restrained arrangements just makes the whole thing fall flat for me.
If you're a diehard country fan I think you'll find plenty of material of interest here. These are some of the earliest recordings of a few of the big names in 70s country, and certainly found plenty of chart success. But I think for the average listener there is more interesting country music to be found elsewhere in the 60s. Ultimately it's not a terrible listen, but No, it's not one you MUST hear before you die.
Coming up next, a little band from the UK you may have heard a thing or two about: The Beatles, with their 2nd LP, With The Beatles!

♫ Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me ♫ (Redux)
I was in the mood tonight for some James Taylor, so … I’m giving you Glady’s Knight!!! See how my mind works … it takes huge leaps and even I am left scratching my head and saying … “WTF just happened???” This is a redux of one I last played back in late 2020 and it seems to be crying out to be heard again … What a strange weekend this has been. When it rains, it pours, as it is doing outside…
