Fremantle Corona Diaries. Emma Daly, owner, The Raw Kitchen, Fremantle. When The Raw Kitchen reopens in July it will have a new name and a revamped venue. “The heart and soul of what we do isn’t changing. The ethos isn’t changing,” says Emma. “But we aren’t all about raw food anymore. We do wholefoods, healthy plant-based food. The name will catch up with what we’ve evolved into.” The relaunch is something Emma and husband Heath have wanted to do for a long time, but the coronavirus pandemic and resulting shutdown provided the environment in which to do it—once they got themselves past survival mode. “When the forced shutdown came, there was no sense of how long it would be for,” says Emma. “There was no sense of planning forward… We went into survival mode, to try and last as long as we could.” They shifted to making homestyle meals that could be picked up or delivered. They slashed as many overheads as they could and, luckily, they were able to keep @zerostore.au open. “It was really lovely. In the early weeks, people were so happy to come in and have a chat. That human interaction was really important.” The fridge was stocked with a selection of takeaway meals that people could heat up at home. Then came the pop-up vegan pizza nights, which were a hit. “It was so nice to see our customers again as they picked up their pizzas in their allotted time slot. Some people were doing it every week.” Last Friday was the final pizza night and @rawkitchenfreo is now closed as Emma, Heath and their remaining staff get ready for the relaunch—and ultimately the return of most of the team. “It’s been on the cards for a long time, but we’ve never pulled the trigger on it. Shutting down is very difficult. We now have the opportunity to look at what we love about the place, what we want to change, tweak and how we want to evolve and do better. Having an opportunity to start with a clean slate is very exciting. It feels like a really nice re-set. You’ve got to look for blessings in these situations.” In addition to a new food menu, there will also be a new elixir drinks range, superfood cocktails, a new range of natural wines and a takeaway cabinet with wholesome lunches. Vegan Food Adventures with Raw Chef Yin takes us to The Raw Kitchen in Fremantle, Australia We had the following: Raw Pad Thai (raw) AUD20 Zucchini noodles, satay sauce, bok choy, chinese cabbage, corn, tamarind, kafir lime, sprouts Mexican Pizza AUD24 BBQ marinated jackfruit, fire roasted corn, roasted capsicum, pickled jalapenos, cashew cheese, coriander Avocado Lime Tart (raw) AUD9.5 Chocolate Hazelnut Vegan Ice Cream AUD7.9 I wanted to try some raw food in Perth and this place came highly recommended so we headed over here for our very first meal in Australia. I really enjoyed the Raw Pad Thai (although it doesn't taste anything like the Pad Thai that I have in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, Thailand). Too bad there's only one raw main course on their menu. I heard they used to have much more previously. - I'm not really a huge fan of cooked pizzas but I did want to see and tas what this one was like. Mr Jazz Guitarist enjoyed it...I think I would have liked the Yellow Coconut Curry much better. The desserts were divine. I'm so glad I got the raw avocado lime tart and the chocolate hazelnut ice cream was nice too. We got the desserts later so it's not in the video but do check out the photos on my Instagram feed instead.
