I’ve been watching an early 90s adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s “Return of the Native” on Tubi (young Catherine Zeta Jones and Clive Owen in a Hallmark production before their concurrent star breakthroughs). Eustacia’s beauty is so extraordinarily stunning that the local people ascribe something supernatural to her, and approach her as if she were a witch (Catherine Zeta Jones couldn’t have been more perfectly cast).

I had to cackle at Eustacia literally scoping him out, then staging a beautiful meeting in the moors with a druzy blue cloak and white horse, before dramatically disappearing into the mist. This behavior is akin to Madam Pompadour staging a “chance” meeting with the King, making sure she was descending out of a petal pink carriage in a sky blue dress when the King saw her for the first time. Staging a stunning tableau to enchant potential lovers is a concept I’m into. Though I’m more interested in creating the beautiful tableau rather than seducing (because than I’ll have to be faced with reality - making choices, letting someone down, potential disappointment etc).
