Random Erinaen linguistics time!

Okay everyone who reads my fics has, at this point, probably seen me have Argit refer to Kevin as ‘Ravrsa’ so we’re starting there because it actually leads into some interesting stuff.

Now, ‘ravrsa’ isn’t only a petname- though it is used as such, especially within mixed groups or relationships- it is a straight up word typically translated as ‘moonshine’, though more accurate would be ‘patch of moonlight’ or, if you wanted to be really pendantic about it, ‘area illuminated by the moon’. As a turn of phrase it’s used to refer to something dangerous but appealing- as a nocturnal species yes the light makes foraging and hunting easier but also makes you more visible to predators- and as a petname is used to refer to something dangerous but beloved (like, say, a bestfriend who could destroy you at any time).

‘Ravrsa’ is made from conjoining and over time condensing two words- ‘Ravra’, which is used to refer to the full moon, when moonshine is most common, and ‘rsata-o’ which is the third-person-singular conjugation of the verb ‘rsata’, which means ‘to illuminate/be illuminated’. The verb itself is derived from an adjective, ‘rsat’, which means ‘bright/shiny’ and is also used as a noun meaning ‘light’.

Where things get really fun is that ‘rsat’ is also the word for ‘blue’. Again, Erinaens are nocturnal, and arboreal, and while they have amazing color vision at night they simply don’t have contact with a lot of blue things. It’s generally water, which is only distinguishable to them as it’s own color under the light of the moon (which is itself blue due to the color of said moon, so, ya know) and bioluminescent critters and flora. So blue is considered the color of light and by extension of bright things. And what we’d consider dark or muted blues? Are classed under ‘black’ and ‘grey’.

But it doesn’t stop there! Because the light of Eri’s moon is a very pale blue, and blue is the color of bright and shiny things, so much so that the words are the same, and what color is the most reflective and easily altered of all?

Erinaens have no concept of or word for ‘white’ as it’s own separate color. It’s considered a shade of blue. A very pale shade, but a shade nonetheless. This has led to a lot of discussion by foreigners who read translated Erinaen texts and find themselves reading about blue-furred kittens and eggs of light.

And a few more related tidbits to see y’all off-

The second ‘r’ in ‘ravrsa’ as well as, of course, the ‘r’ in ‘rsata’ and ‘rsat’ is slurred.

‘Ravrsa’ can be converted to an adjective, meaning ‘like moonshine’, by removing the ‘a’ at the end, turning it into ‘ravrs’

That’s allowed because there are enough words in Erinaen that are converted from adjectives by adding a vowel to the end that people started assuming any word ending in a vowel can have that final vowel removed to make it an adjective.

So ‘rsat’- ‘bright/shiny’- becomes ‘rsata’- ‘to make/be made bright/shiny’- which becomes ‘ravrsa’- ‘something made bright/shiny by the moon’- and then ‘ravrs’- ‘makes things bright/shiny like the moon’
