Drow Name Tables

Something I did as a special favor to @kimmurielsscryingmirror (@eldritchmist ) who showed interest. Because it’s...pretty big I decided to make it into it’s own post.

These are a few Drow naming tables that were originally found in an issue of Dragon Magazine. It’s two d100 tables of prefixes and suffixes commonly used in first names. The second couple of tables is a list of common house name prefixes and suffixes.

EDIT: Just a little something for those who care which I didn’t add before because it took me so long to finish the transcription I just wanted to post it lol. The gender difference is noted in the related Dragon Magazine article as being significant. Non Drow may not notice but a Drow will notice the difference. Female names sometimes borrow parts that are normally only considered male and this is considered fine...but a male with a name that borrows a typically only female part would be seen as extremely taboo.

I've been encouraged by many a shipper, and so! I'll be trying to organize a nice list of prompts and such for an undetermined week early next year!

Depending on how popular this gets, I might make a blog specifically for promoting and reblogging pieces and works related to the ship, both during the week and afterwards-- but until then, we'll just see what happens!

The One That Caught Her Eye

@flashfictionfridayofficial Turns out I can handle a flash fiction level of world-building on a fairly regular basis.

“What, you’re not allowed to talk to them?”

“No, it just seems weird. They’re here to do a job.” Chenna stared out the window even though she couldn’t see her father’s fields from there, or the small house where the fortifiers her father had hired were staying.

“So are people in stores and you talk to them.”

“But people in stores are… there. Where I am. I wouldn’t have to go out to the fields or their house to talk to them.”

“You don’t usually overthink things this much.” Liv slid closer to the middle of the bed, lying flat on her back. “Do you have a crush on one of them?”

“No,” Chenna said immediately. She’d thought about it, when her brother had teased her about the same thing. She did want to talk to one of them in particular, the shorter man with the black hair and the bigger muscles in his arms, but it couldn’t be a crush. A crush meant you wanted to do things like kiss the person, or marry the person. The fortifiers were adults with jobs, way too old for Chenna to think about kissing them or marrying them. She just thought the one with the black hair was handsome, and she sometimes wondered what he would think of her if the fortifiers did come down to the house and she was there.

“Why?” she asked her friend.

“Just asking.” Liv shrugged. “You’re overthinking again. If you want to talk to them, talk to them.”

Chenna looked down at the bed and nodded.

It was getting close to sunset when she went out to the little house by the fields. The sun was low so it shone right into her eyes when she faced it. The air was golden.

She’d imagined taking a deep breath before she knocked on the door, but the man with the black hair was sitting on the ground outside the house, doing something with his hands.

Chenna walked toward him, but not so close that she’d be looking down at him. That felt wrong. “Hi,” she said.

He looked up, his hands still working. “Hi.”

“I’m Chenna.”

“Rauv.”

“What are you doing?”

“Making a bracelet.” He held it out to her.

When she stepped closer, her eyes slid from the pattern of the smooth material in his hand to the pattern of red on his wrist. Three bands around his wrist, which she thought at first were finished bracelets, but no, they were flat to his skin. And red.

She looked back up at his face, sure she shouldn’t be staring, but he had already noticed. His eyes gentle, he changed the angle of his arm so she could have a better look.

She wanted to ask, but couldn’t find words that didn’t sound– she was sure– incredibly rude or hopelessly ignorant.

“You’ve never had a trilogy here before?” he said.

“What, fortifiers? No. My father couldn’t afford it until this year. Well, last year, but he had to build the house.” She waved at it, sure her face was turning red, pretty sure she shouldn’t be talking about her father’s money.

“So.” He set the bracelet down and pulled his knees up a little. “We work in groups of three. One to anchor, one to purify, and one to fortify. The actual fortifying of the field. We bond our magic when we commit to working together.” He held out his wrist again.

“And you get… a tattoo? To, um…” She sounded ridiculous.

He smiled. “The magic does it. Part of the ceremony.” He twisted his arm, looking at both sides of his wrist. “More like a burn, I guess, than a tattoo. It’s all at once.”

“Ow,” she said without thinking.

“It doesn’t hurt,” he reassured her quickly.

“You said it’s like a burn.”

He rubbed his other hand over it. “It… it’s like a burn when it happens. It just hurts for a second. Now it doesn’t hurt.” He held it out to her again.

She hadn’t realized she had moved closer. She reached out tentatively and ran a finger over it. Each line was different, she could see now that she was closer. The one farthest from his hand caught her eye, the one that was made of tight swirls.

He smiled when she touched it. “That one’s mine. I’m the anchor.”

“You seem like it.” She looked up into his eyes. “You seem steady.”

“Thank you.” He pointed to the one more like a square-linked chain, in the middle. “Ketzie’s the fortifier.” The top one was plainest, two bands with a tiny space between them. “Theel’s the purifier.”

Chenna wanted to say something about how awesome she thought it was, but that didn’t seem right for something that seemed very serious. She looked down at her own wrist, wondering what it would look like to have a symbol like that running across it, a symbol of a serious commitment.

Rauv picked the half-finished bracelet back up. “Would you like this, when I’m done with it?”

“If that’s okay.”

“Of course. I make them for fun, if you want it it’s yours.” He twisted one of the strands and tucked it around the others, and without looking up he went on, “You can come watch us work tomorrow, if you like. There’s not much to see, but you seem interested.”

Chenna felt a flutter of excitement. “Maybe I will.” She waited to see if he would say anything else, but it seemed like the conversation was over, so she started back to the house.

She was interested. Why would she go watch him work, when there wasn’t much to see and she wouldn’t get to talk to him or be close to him, if she had a crush on him? She was just interested.
