#rather than getting those benefits from the larger pool of the FEHB

I've talked about this before, but this isn't really true. The USPS does lose money (in the sense that money can ever be "lost"). We're entirely self-funded, and those funds haven't added up to our operating costs for a while now. Congress occasionally has to bail us out so the USPS can afford to pay its employees, maintain facilities and equipment, and provide benefits. So this isn't true
(the only taxes we get are for overseas mail, most of which is from and to military bases) and this isn't entirely accurate either
The 70-years thing was repealed in 2022, but we're still feeling the impact, and it was parter of a larger, still-ongoing trend of forcing the USPS to pay for things that other federal agencies don't
The Postal Service should 100% be tax-funded, but everyone would have to put massive pressure on Congress to pass a reform act to make it happen
#source: I work there#I don't have proof but I'm pretty sure they switched us to the PSHB to force us to pay for it out of our own funds#rather than getting those benefits from the larger pool of the FEHB#don't get me wrong. we cost a LOT of money#but mostly because we have a bazillion employees carrying out 24/7 operations across the entire country#for comparison the CIA (which like us is an independent executive agency) has a budget of only $15 billion. but they also only employ 21k#(and that's just their yearly operational budget. that doesn't include appropriation and other forms of income)#the USPS needs about $90 billion to break even but we have 635k employees#now. $90 billion is paltry in the grand scheme of things. but it's a big scary number and one that scares off a lot of representatives
