with respect to steves-strapcollection, I would like to propose an amendment. everything I hear about working with the muppets says that you forget that the muppets aren’t real. you forget that there’s a sweaty rat man hiding behind/below/inside the puppet.

I propose that steve is not jokingly put out about seeing eddie at their date instead of the hot puppet, I propose that he is genuinely baffled.

I think that steve is genuinely into the muppet. I think that when he gets to the restaurant and doesn’t see the muppet there (maybe he was running late, and that’s why he expects his date to have been there first) he thinks he’s been stood up, and he’s sad about it. but then Some Guy sits down at his table? and he’s like? who the fuck are you, excuse you, I’m waiting for someone? I’m not giving out autographs, move along please? and This Rando Guy is like ........steve. I am your date??? did you forget?? that I’m not really a muppet????

and The Party never let him live this down. robin is affectionate when she says their type is muppets. one day when she goes with steve to visit eddie at work, she slides up to his puppet between takes like “heyyy sooo....you got a sister?”

but the Party are ruthless. any time they see a muppet, they’re like “steve. steve is this sexy to you. are you hot for gonzo. what about animal. does animal turn you on steve”

and steve and eddie fully lean into this. they never do pda if there’s a risk of steve being recognized (because then the fans would think he’s cheating!!). they convince the jim henson company to let eddie’s muppet have as its official lore that it’s dating steve. steve’s wikipedia page says he’s dating this muppet.

when steve has to do interview circuits, they always ask him about the dating a muppet thing, and he plays it absolutely serious. he never breaks character, he never lets anyone treat it as something weird, he is Committed to The Bit
