[podfic] Go Falling One by One, by raspberryhunter
my personal ALPA podfic tradition — well, ok, if tradition is “last year, and also this year” — is “cannibal ladies”, represented in 2022 by this gloriously unnerving story written by @raspberryhunter about the cannibal ants discovered in a Polish nuclear bunker.
as the tags say, #the canon is the warning, and also #ants are basically alien, but if that’s your jam, I’ve got your toast! much gratitude to raspberryhunter both for the blanket permission and the general “embrace the bizarre and waltz with it” perspective, which is very much my jam. you can have my last drop of honeydew, if you need it.
Go Falling One by One, a story by raspberryhunter, read by CompassRose, 9:00
Rating: not rated/Gen
includes sound effects throughout
have a forage through the rest of the ALPA collection (@awesomeladiespodficanthology ) while you’re at it! it includes over 8 hours of stories in many fandoms by multiple readers, and the dreamwidth post linked above has a plethora of listening options, from the AO3 collection to a spreadsheet of individual links to a single huge podbook of everything!
Tumblr media
(image id: an ant, standing on some kind of dark rough stone or concrete surface, dramatically spotlit so its shadow looms huge beside it. credit text, in worn stencil and distressed type, falls from the top sideways. the ALPA podfic sticker is on the bottom right, with the head & shoulders silhouette of a black woman in a headwrap outlining a dense pattern illustration of diverse women’s faces, a microphone extending to her mouth, and the text AWESOME LADIES PODFIC ANTHOLOGY XII)
cover design and layout, as well as ALPA sticker design, by me

Five Works in 2020
I was tagged by the lovely @angel-in-new-york-city! This was fun, thanks for letting me play!
Rules: Choose your 5 favourite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you’ve brought into the world. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works!
Here are five works, in seven different fandoms, in this past Year of the Plague.
1. The Adoration of the Earth:
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Strange/Norrell, [E], 6,000+ words.
One should never flirt with odd books at Solstice-time in Faerie, as Mr Strange learns to his great chagrin.
My first JSMN fic, written for @threedomiciles in 2020′s Smut4Smut challenge. Writing explicit fic is challenging, and writing it in Susanna Clarke 19th C. pastiche even more so; still, I’m pleased with how things turned out! Plus, I live for esoteric footnotes ;)
2. The Lark and Her Lieutenants:
Les Misérables  - Victor Hugo, Cosette/Marius, Enjolras/Grantaire, Valjean/Javert, [G], 18,585 words.
While Cosette is stirring up the Revolution, Grantaire meets a young man in the Luxembourg Gardens.
My Les Mis Quarantine Edition Big Bang fic, a collaboration with the awesome @thebansacredbanned. Now with art from @sssara-b! In this story, Cosette and Enjolras swap roles: Enjolras is the shy ingenue, Cosette the revolutionary leader; Valjean just wants to get his daughter off the barricades.
3.  The Instruments of Their Master:
La Comédie Humaine - Honoré de Balzac/19th Century CE France RPF, Corentin/Manuel, [E], 5,700 words.
The Duke of Otranto had two protégés: one, a police spy; the other, a promising future Deputy. The lessons these men learned under his tutelage — none more during the Hundred Days, when the Republic hung on a knife’s edge of war and politics — left the one greater, the other more guilty.
My Yuletide treat for @kainosite, in very much a fandom of two; a crossover pairing between Balzac’s fictional police spy, Corentin, and noted 19th century French politician Jacques-Antoine Manuel. Set in France’s Hundred Days period, Napoleon’s spymaster Joseph Fouché pits his two protégés against each other so that they can better work together to secretly thwart old Boney; hatesex and politics and history collide!
4.  Diamonds Taking Shape ... :
Red White & Royal Blue - Casey McQuiston/Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Alex/Henry, Nick/Rachel, [T], 4040 words.
… and an intersection with Crazy Rich Love (:winky face emoji:)
My Yuletide assignment for @legendaryguardian; when I saw I’d matched with them on both CRA and RW&RB, I knew I had to write this crossover! Alex & Henry visit Singapore, and have dinner with Nick & Rachel at Gardens by the Bay.
5.  The Age of Imagination and Experience:
Call Me by Your Name, Elio/Oliver, Oliver/Michol, [M], 2/9 chapters. WIP.
“Ah – to have that kind of innocence, the innocence that seals the mind against imagination and the heart against experience!" A Gilded Age, The Age of Innocence AU.
I started writing this Gilded Age AU for the December CMBYN Challenge, though the way it’s going, it’ll be well into 2021 before it finishes! I have loved Wharton’s The Age of Innocence for more than half my life, and I couldn’t resist envisioning Elio as Ellen Olenska and Michol as May Welland, with Oliver as Newland Archer, the man in the middle. Having a bisexual male love interest in place of Wharton’s foreign divorcee is a different narrative proposition, and I am very much enjoying exploring 1870s New York society through Oliver’s eyes.
I’m tagging all the talented creators mentioned in this post, and anyone else who wants to join in - @breadcrumbsandstars, I know you wrote a lot last year? @saltedpin; @raspberryhunter, so did you guys!

also: Rebeka
also: Belosselskiy

AO3 fic-recs
Tumblr media
I’ve been organising my bookmarks on AO3 recently, and it’s been a joy rediscovering some of the stories on it. I thought it might be fun to make a master post with recs for some of my favourites, in case anyone has some time on their hands at the moment (looking at you, COVID-19).
A few notes about the fics I’ve picked for this list:
It’s organised by fandom, and otherwise in no particular order. I love them all
I’ve picked stories that are complete and can stand alone, with one clearly noted exception
Most of the authors on this list have written lots of other great fics, so check out their other works if you like the ones I’ve recommended
If I know what the author’s Tumblr account is I’ve linked it, but in most cases I don’t. If you are, or know, one of the authors, drop me a message and I’ll add a link to your Tumblr
This list doesn’t represent all my fandoms, it’s representative of the things I’ve bookmarked on AO3 over the last 10 years. Recent fandoms are over-represented, and there are fandoms that I love which aren’t here at all because we posted on other platforms back in the dark ages...
I might add to this at some point because there are some really glaring omissions (where are the fics about Beverly Crusher, Elizabeth Weir, Sam Carter and Laura Roslin???)
Sanctuary
The Thames by palmacae: John Watson is called on by Scotland Yard to identify a body that has been pulled out of the Thames.
until breathing feels all right by openended @dearophelia: There’s loads of good Sanctuary fic out there, but 90% of what I’ve bookmarked is Out of the Blue related. This is the best of the lot.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
My house is haunted by rotten desire by averita @directrix-zelda: Five times Zelda prays to Lilith and one time she prays for her.
tell the devil I said hey when you get back to where you’re from by hacklesacademy(ladyvivien): A quietly devastating reflection on Zelda, Hilda and the Cain Pit
That’s Why Her Hair Is So Big, It’s Full Of Secrets by uisceB: Madam Spellman, bittersweet and very funny. You know how sometimes an author pops up in your fandom and drops a fully formed masterpiece? This is one.
What Really Happened by LaLicorneRose: A reimagining of Part 3 that is 100 times better than canon.
What’s in a Name? by CallmeCordelia: Zelda is shaky, Hilda is a lovely sister, Prudence has lost a father but gained a mother.
When the Spell Breaks (the Cradle Will Fall) by Singofsolace @concreteangel1221: Hilda stops Zelda from going back to the Academy after the Caligari spell is broken. First in a 3 part series that I wish was canon.
Out of the mouths of Serpents by Sapphicsarah: Zelda embraces the flood
The Subtle Art of Sisterhood by MinervaFan @minervafan: The Spellmans and Mary Wardwell come to terms with the events of Part 2. Part of a series but they each stand alone.
The Thick of It
Hairline Fractures Through our Facades by Tricki: Malcolm and Nicola meet each other’s spouses for the first time. Brief glimpses of Malcom’s humanity.
How to Gracefully Disappear from a Room by Tricki: Nicola and the POTUS are caught up in a hostage situation
Rescue Remedy by BeatriceMacbeth: Superior Malcola smut. #sorrynotsorry.
Surefooted Stumblings by MatildaSwan: Nicola and Sam rarepair - Sam takes pity on Nicola after a particularly harsh bollocking from Malcolm.
Doctor Who
Two Birds in a Cage by daystarsearcher (incomplete) - @daystarsearcher: Inferno AU - Sarah Jane and Three are held captive by Section Leader Liz Shaw. I’ve been haunted by this fic since it was first posted on Livejournal over a decade ago.
Catching Hold and Letting Go by cosmic_llin @cosmic-llin: Sarah Jane runs and Juno Redfern tries to hold her, but not too tightly.
Star Trek: The Next Generation
London by cosmic_llin @cosmic-llin: Troi and Riker chase a serial killer back through time and get trapped in the past. But way more depressing than that sounds.
The Queen of Air and Darkness by raspberryhunter @raspberryhunter: Deanna Troi has a telepathic encounter with the Borg Queen. She talks to Guinan about it.
Star Trek: Voyager
Days by cosmic_llin @cosmic-llin: Tuvok/Janeway friendship as Kathryn adjusts to being stranded in the Delta Quadrant.
The Worst Witch
for in our youth we did these things by hihoplastic: Hecate reluctantly attends Pippa’s birthday party and OMG it’s excruciating but worth it.
Lewis
Ferns and Dasies by BlueIris4: A collection of Innocent/Hobson drabbles that make up a beautiful love story.
Holby City
an intimacy by PotofCoffee @magnass: The author describes this as “the most sexless escort-au ever probably” and that’s no lie. It’s full of feels and relateable awkwardness though.
blood red shiraz will wash through these slate grey streets by MatildaSwan: Berena noir/PI AU. Makes me want to chain smoke.
Cold Noses, Warm Hearts by gutsandglitter: the verteran and the veterenarian. AU with dogs. Adorable.
My fics (Earthbound Cosmonaut)
If you’re still bored, here are a few of mine that are both complete and stand alone:
Take my hand and let’s start anew (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina): The coven takes a while to settle down after the events of Part 2. Some struggle more than others.
It takes more than a mattress to make a home (Holby City): After Bernie hurts her back, Serena and Jason help her move into her new apartment.
The Adventures of Little Nicola (The Thick of It): Malcolm Tucker rescues a kitten an unwittingly triggers a social media storm. My only attempt at crack.
The day we met the Doctor (The Thick of It): The 2009 Downing Street Christmas Party, and as many Doctor Who meta jokes as a could shoehorn in to 3k words.
And on the seventh day, he rested (The Thick of It): Malcolm Tucker descends on the Murray household on his day off to manage an oncoming storm. My personal favourite of all my TTOI fics.

Chapters: 1/1 (9649 words) Fandom: Don Carlos | Don Carlo - Verdi/du Locle/Méry Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Carlos/Rodrigue, Rodrigo & Elisabeth, Elisabeth & Eboli, Philip & Rodrigo Characters: Rodrigue | Rodrigo, Élisabeth de Valois | Elisabetta di Valois, La princesse Eboli | La Principessa Eboli, Philippe II | Filippo II, Carlos | Carlo Additional Tags: Fix-It, fix all the things, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Extremely Ahistorical, Save Flanders, Trick or Treat: Treat, Treat, Rodrigo/Flanders, Elisabeth/Philip - Freeform, Carlo/Elisabeth, Loyalty, Trust Summary:
Rodrigo and Elisabeth, Elisabeth and Eboli, Philip and Rodrigo, Carlos and Rodrigo: together, they can strengthen each other; together, they can save the ones they care for.
SO HERE IS LONG (for me) FIX-IT. I FIXED ALL THE THINGS. Gosh, Verdi/du Locle/Mery really made it difficult -- there are so many things working against Our Heroes, and at one point I had this whole list and diagram of all the things that had to be fixed and what order they had to be fixed in because if one didn't do it in the right order it all fell apart.
It's extraordinarily, unrepentantly ahistorical, and I super don't care because Verdi didn't either :D I also did the opera thing of pulling things from Schiller when I felt like it and cheerfully ignoring Schiller when I didn't :)
Thank you to @iberiandoctor and sprocket for very helpful betas!

i finished the penultimate peril for the second time & then finished the end for the first time without realizing it was the first time until, in fact, i got to the end, and was subsequently struck by a hunger for fic but without any particulars as to what kind of fic that should be
so here’s a selection of recs from my unstructured wanderings through the series of unfortunate events section of ao3:
- The Ruinous Relationship by soupytwist (G | 1844 | Count Olaf/Kit Snicket)
This is your last chance to decide not to read this tragic story. You can still get that copy of The Luckiest Kids In The World: Happy Fun Times At The Funfair if you run fast enough.
- Eleven Chapters in a Story by prodigy (G | 3911 | Count Olaf/Kit Snicket)
Files chronicling the lives of one Count O. and one K. Snicket -- or rather, their intersection.
- Rarely Told in Full by ViolaCoye (T | 2092 | Lemony Snicket/Beatrice Baudelaire)
And if a woman you loved for years says, "I love you, but I can not be with you and I hope this two hundred page book I have sent with your engagement ring explains why,” you would likely look over the fact that she still loves you and instead focus on the fact that she is now married to another man and pregnant.
- The Calumnious Coda by Relia (T | 2374 | Baudelaire siblings-centric)
If you have ever been on an extended sea voyage on a small boat, then you may be familiar with the feeling of wishing you were back upon land, surrounded by the company of all your closest friends and associates, where there is plenty of fodder for conversation -- a phrase which here means “things to talk about other than saltwater, the weather, the narrow dimensions of the boat, or which fins a shark might wear shoes on, if it wore them” -- where the food is freshly prepared and where, so far as you are able to tell, the floor remains mostly where you left it.
- when we met, my life began by postcardmystery (T | 1054 | Lemony Snicket/Beatrice Baudelaire)
I love you as your namesake never loved Dante, as your other namesake loved the Seine. I love you although I have forbidden myself to speak either of your names aloud, and thus I love you as a secret only I am permitted to keep, the most cherished of my midnight whispers. I love you although you have been dead a year, and because of it, for nothing you could ever do could make me love you less. I love you as the fish loves the fish-hook and the worm loves to be bait, as the bells love to toll for a funeral and lilies love to make the mourners sneeze.
- The Extremely Appropriate, Inoffensive, and Altogether Cheery Pony Party by raspberryhunter (G | 1077 | a message)
I have followed in the recursive footsteps of my associate by writing a story of a story within a story.
With all due respect, [a letter which was illegible and could have been an L. or a B.]
- Ellipses by worldturtling (T | 1214 | Count Olaf/Kit Snicket)
There was a girl. And a town. And a smell.
Or, a story about the sentence that was their relationship.
- the last one left in line by endquestionmark (M | 3339 | Lemony Snicket/Beatrice Baudelaire)
1 The worst decision in the world does not involve kerosene, or ominously rusty machinery, or even the ill-advised pastime of teasing a grove full of hybridized Apis mellifera, more commonly known as the Africanized or “killer” honey bee. It involves a much more invasive species: the writer, which is far less easy to detect and almost impossible to eradicate once an infestation has been established. The worst decision in the world is not even a decision at all, but rather an error; it involves knowing a writer and letting it close enough to fall in love with one, because any other terrible fate will seem positively polite by comparison.

Nicias is the best. Hampson is also the most angsty, and Fleming is the most gorgeous. (although Hampson is very pretty too)
also: Athanaël is such an elfy name I immediately created Yet Another Warden (elf mage) named after him
Tumblr media
problem is, elves can’t have beards so I couldn’t properly model after him
my other opera-inspired Warden, Eugene, is a bit better:

Well, Rodrigo di Posa of course! And Filippo :D
Rodrigo
Headcanon A:  realistic - he’s gay. is this even “headcanon”, it’s just straight up canon
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious: Rodrigo doesn’t know he’s in an opera, and that’s how he ended up being a good and pure baritone. he just doesn’t know the traditions.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends - he did sleep with Filippo for both political advantage and because he realized Filippo desperately needed love, but he feels very guilty about it
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own. - what do u mean he died. CLEARLY he faked his death and got Carlo to safety with the help of Carlo Quinto, then they ran away to Flanders where they led La Résistance and got married
Filippo
Headcanon A:  realistic: he’s bi and deeply in the closet, having a lot of Catholic Guilt™
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious: it’s hard to think up something hilarious about him
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends - he fell in love with Posa (pretty much canon tbh) and his aria, while mostly about Elisabeth, is also about him realizing everyone loves his son more
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own. - after the finale he makes sure the Inquisitor meets an unfortunate “accident” and actively works on being a better husband

[podfic] The Yule Land, by raspberryhunter
I would certainly consider Yuletide itself to be one of my most active fandoms, and this glorious little pastiche is a delightful example of the “fandom is my fandom!” category, gently lampooning the experience of Yuletide itself. naturally I was one of those who discovered T.S. Eliot in high school, wandering the halls with Four Quartets prominently stacked on top of my binders (yes, you would have hated me in high school; I would have hated myself in high school, I was a pretentious little horror who didn’t even know how to apply my heavy black eyeliner properly), so you can imagine my reaction: 😍
the @voiceteam mystery box live in the moment challenge was to podfic any story posted on or after December 25, 2021. this was at the top of my Yuletide possibles (of course I have a shortlist of Yuletide possibles! it gets longer every year, because my ambition well outstrips my execution — and my patience for editing, tbh; I love recording, but editing? not so much) and here we are!
may raspberryhunter, who generously encourages transformative creations of their works, always enjoy easy drafting and few bears! thank you!
