Babylon 5 Rewatch - A Voice in the Wilderness (Part 2)
This is a post I originally wrote several years ago for Mark Oshiroâs Mark Watches blog. I donât really plan to edit them before posting, so there may be some references that donât make sense. If you see words that look like gibberish, they are actually rot13, which was our way of discussing spoilers. There are plugins you can install to decode the text (Cryptext is the one I use), or you can copy/paste to rot13.com, or just ignore it.
Overall, Iâd rate this two-parter as being fine. Nothing really stands out as exceptional for me (except the B5 Mantra in part 1), but there is nothing I particularly dislike either. I donât mind watching it, which is good because it sets up certain things down the road, but there are definitely better episodes. Vg'f nyfb uneq gb nibvq pbzcnevat vg gb gur frevrf'f bgure gjb-cnegre, gb gurfr rcvfbqrf' qrgevzrag.
Now that I can talk about the main plots, I find that I donât really have much to say. I find Captain Pierce irritating, but then again, youâre supposed to. One of the most annoying things about him is the fact that itâs actually not that bad of an idea to have a warship as backup in this situation, as we can see once the alien ship shows up, but Captain Pierce is entirely the wrong person for the job. In fact, heâs so much the opposite of the kind of person youâd want on your side in a situation like this one that heâs almost a caricature.

We find out in this episode (or at least, Draal guesses) that the reason Varn appeared to Londo, as well as to him and Sinclair, is because the three of them are most familiar with the third principle of sentient lifeâits capacity for self-sacrifice. I can definitely see this applying to Draal and Sinclair, but Londo? What do you guys think? Does this characteristic apply to him?
In the same scene, Delenn warns Londo seriously, âI donât think you fully understand what Draal is asking of you.â Londo replies, âOne of us will not return, yes?â This scene is trying to be super dramatic, but come on. Draal is clearly the redshirt in this situation. Not only is he the only one of the three not in the main cast, but heâs even come to the station already in the process of letting go of his old life. Attempt at creating tension: unsuccessful.
I suppose I should talk a little bit about Garibaldiâs story in this episode. Itâs interesting that early on in part 1, there is a scene which really emphasizes Garibaldiâs interest in Talia (in a weird stalkery way), before dropping the subject entirely for Garibaldi to focus on this old relationship. I do like that when he asks Talia for help, there is some acknowledgement of the awkwardness of the situation and that he is completely professional and polite. This is the Garibaldi I like, and I suppose weâll have to wait and see what effect, if any, this little interlude will have on his behavior towards Talia.

One more thing about this subplot: Garibaldi finally manages to contact Lise, and she starts to try and tell him something, but he interrupts her because he just has to get his confession of love out before he loses his nerve. Oh, Garibaldi! Donât you realize youâre in a work of fiction, and in a work of fiction nothing good can come of interrupting someone who is trying to tell you something? You could have been saved the embarrassment if only you had recognized the trope!

Favorite scene: This episode has a few great lines scattered here and there, but not really any extended scenes that captivate me. If I can be permitted to link two short scenes across a commercial break, Iâd pick Londo piloting the shuttle. Heâs so clearly having a blast, but, whoops! heâs a little out of practice. Plus, thereâs another great blooper involving this scene. Skip to 7:05 in the video below.

Belly Dance Week 45 I honestly have lost track of "time" which doesn't surprise me as I'm not sure if I'm on week 45 or 48, and that's perfect. It means that I have been in my body and not in my head with calculations and configurations. My specific style of Egyptian Belly Dance has a cultural name that I find important to say, "Raqs Sharqi," because in North Africa, where belly dance originates, there is no word that specifically translates as "belly dance." As usual, the western world waters down truth in order for it to be more consumable to bland pallets that are too lazy to learn how to say words that involve the most unused neglected part of the body of native English speakers, the back of the throat where click sounds and other mother tongues stimulate energy to flow up and out. Heaven on earth. Light. No wonder people who speak native languages tend to be smarter. More energy gets to flow from the back of their throats and up into their brains, you see. That's one of many reasons I want to learn a cultural language: Igbo, Afrikaans, Xhosa, or Zulu. I want to learn how to use my whole back throat area for advanced energy and to communicate with indigenous people. What a gift. Kind of a segue, but also health-relevant: Deep throat work is not gross or nasty and we have to get used to threading intelligence about female body health into anything we are talking about and not po*rn-ify anything sensual or sexual. Because female health creates female vitality. Our female vitality not only makes us more aware, intuitive, and magical, it raises the vitality of our lovers, children, and community, all genders because generally, the mother is the first teacher to all. Deep throat connection is not only healing to the brain but also to the vaginal canal and cervix. Oral sex done with a grateful heart, whether sucking your lover's fingers or genitals, favorably changes the quality of your entire female body. In our most recent belly dance class, our soft aim was to bring sensitivity into our movements. "The divine is in the details," my teacher beautifully said, so we worked on recycling our energy from our feet (earth) to our shoulders and arms (tree branches). When you recycle your energy, you don't need to take/steal/manipulate in order to receive anything. You are capable of being filled up and energized off your own natural supply which makes you more magnetic to anything you desire. We also did sensuous movements that reminded me of one of my favorite cultural dances from Ethiopia, Eskista, that emphasizes intense neck and shoulder movement--I was so buttery while doing this because of my love for Eskista is tactile and deep. With all the ass and hip shimmies, breast shimmies, figure 8s, hip drops, and neck and throat opening and that intelligence invoked therein, I left class glowy, and that glow I inhaled even deeper as I biked home, allowing it to add value to my cells, tissues, and organs, and in how I love. More water in a world that is burning is also how we fight back and forward interests of our community and those we love. --India Ame'ye, Author

on the one hand, the allegorical 'coal mine' is on fire, and has been since the origins of the police as an apparatus. on the other hand, this is news because it's genuinely infectious.
the cops managed to ascribe mystical properties to a well-understood sedative with so much public buy-in that "magic airborne instant-death powder" is a major public scandal despite the medically available transdermal patches of the stuff taking 12 hours to kick in the whole way.
and they're doing this, it should be noted, at the same time they're moving to ban personal protections against inhalant toxins and pathogens, among a group that already dies in droves to COVID [boilerpate "in no cases do you 'gotta hand it to' a virus with a disproportionately high kill rate among indigenous peoples"]
so you KNOW they either know it's bullshit or simply value the +10% kill rate of their grenade-delivered gas weapons on civilian targets more
we ought to be doing Israeli shit to police and military families; we don't because that is the social class created by the state violence monopoly to do that shit to Palestinians en masse and us when it'd clear traffic for the Presidential motorcade, and the chemical/ballistic knowledge to put that kind of violence in the hands of the people is genuinely gatekept multiple times over even while your [redacted] uncle dribbles quips about "Chi-Raq" into the holiday stuffing
I'm so frustrated by the lack of response to the mass psychogenic illness of law enforcement officials claiming to suffer contact fentanyl poisoning. There were a few studies done that quietly concluded that it's not real, none of the cases were credible, and the symptoms most closely resemble a panic attack or somatic episode.
No one is connecting this to systemic issues in police training and culture and no one is treating this as the canary in the coal mine it is.
Modern police training is functionally cult indoctrination, and intentionally cultivates paranoia. Police learn that everyone is out to get them, danger lurks around every corner, and their only job is to make it home alive after their shift.
They then enter the body of police culture, where questioning the bad behavior of fellow officers is at best strictly socially punished and at worst can get them killed, where they are constantly vigilant to say the right things and portray the right beliefs.
Suddenly, after generations of mainstream culture being generally supportive of police, in the midst of an anxiety-riddled pandemic, there is a highly-publicized backlash against law enforcement. Regular people are saying ACAB, calling cops fascists and murderers and wife-beaters. They're posting officers' service records on social media. Police, unwilling to believe they are evil, experience a cognitive dissonance backlash effect and cling to beliefs that contradict reality.
No one should be shocked - and no one should be hesitant to say - that there is a mental health crisis in law enforcement. They are paranoid, hyper-vigilant, and mired in cognitive dissonance. They have guns and virtually unchecked power to enact violence in their communities. Making up delusional stories about fentanyl is a pretty mild outcome compared to what we should be expecting from these circumstances.
Police aren't just bastards. They're a danger to themselves and others.

Pixel editing and parametric image editing
Two menthods of digital photo editing are pixel editing and parametric editing. Letâs go at their definitions:
What is pixel editing?
Pixel Editing refers to the process of manipulating individual pixels within an image. This technique allows for precise control over the appearance of an image, making it possible to alter colors, shapes, and details at a granular level. Common applications of pixel editing include retouching photographs, creating detailed artwork, and performing tasks like removing blemishes or adding textures. Software like Adobe Photoshop is widely used for pixel editing, providing tools like brushes, erasers, and selection tools for fine-tuning images.
What is parametric image editing?
Parametric Image Editing involves editing images based on parameters or settings rather than directly lie the pixels. This approach allows for non-destructive editing, meaning the original image remains intact, and changes can be adjusted or reverted at any time. Parameters might include settings for exposure, color balance, sharpness, and other effects. Tools like Adobe Lightroom and Capture One utilize parametric editing, enabling users to apply adjustments in a more flexible and reversible manner, often resulting in a more streamlined workflow for photographers.
Photo Editing HistoryEarly Techniques (19th Century)
In 1860s: The advent of photography began with basic darkroom techniques. Photographers would use manual methods to adjust exposure and develop images.
Montage: Early photographers like Oscar Gustave Rejlander and Henry Peach Robinson created composite images by combining multiple photographs.
The Darkroom Era (20th Century)
1920s-1930s: Techniques like dodging and burning were used to enhance contrast and exposure in black-and-white photographs.
Film Manipulation: Photographers experimented with physical alterations, such as scratching negatives or using various chemicals for effects.
The Digital Revolution (Late 20th Century)
1988: Adobe Photoshop was released, revolutionizing photo editing. It introduced layers, selection tools, and numerous filters, allowing for advanced manipulation.
1990s: The transition to digital photography led to new editing possibilities, making tools more accessible.
Online Editing and Social Media (2000s)
2000s: Online platforms like Flickr and Instagram popularized photo sharing, leading to a demand for easy editing tools.
Mobile Apps: The rise of smartphones resulted in apps like Snapseed and VSCO, allowing users to edit photos on-the-go.
Current Trends (2010s-Present)
AI Integration: Recent advancements have seen the integration of artificial intelligence in editing tools, automating tasks like retouching and object removal.
Parametric Editing: Tools like Adobe Lightroom emphasize non-destructive editing, allowing for flexible adjustments.
Collaborative Editing: Online tools enable multiple users to edit and share images simultaneously, fostering collaboration.

Digital marketing is the practice of promoting a product, service, or brand to a large audience using digital channels, platforms, and technologies. Unlike traditional marketing, which relies on physical media, digital marketing campaigns are primarily executed online. There are various types of digital marketing, including search engine optimization (SEO), pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, content marketing, social media marketing, email marketing, affiliate marketing, and online PR. We are all aware of the trend of digital technologies all over the world. Nowadays, companies need to engage in digital marketing activities to promote and increase their business. Babylon 5 Rewatch - TKO
Ugh, itâs the boxing episode. Is it written down somewhere that every sci-fi TV show has to have one of these? (I think this may have been another one I missed on my first runâeither that, or I had managed to block it from my memory by the time I got the DVDs years later.)
I donât like the main plot of this episode at all. And itâs not just that Iâm not a fan of stories about people beating each other up for sport (although thatâs part of it), but I donât think this particular iteration of the trope was handled particularly well. It looked to me like they were going for a particular message, and they not only failed to achieve it, but they kind of ended up advocating for the opposite?
Look, Walker Smith is clearly depicted as a racist. He keeps calling aliens âsnakeheads,â which is obviously supposed to be a slur; he acts like heâs doing everyone a favor by condescending to participate in the Mutai, when in fact, they are the ones who would be doing him a favor; and he disrespects the Muta-Do to his face and never seems to regret it for an instant, despite the fact that he has just sunk his chances for a comeback. I think the episode is trying to show us that by participating in the Mutai, Walker learns the error of his ways and comes to respect these aliens that he before saw simply as a means to an end.
AND YET. The episode never calls him on his racist attitudes, and he is never forced to suffer any consequences for them. On the contrary, he is rewarded! He is rightly denied entry to the Mutai, but then the secret to participating anyway is handed to him on a silver platter. Then, despite being constantly warned how tough the Mutai is and how humans donât stand a chance, he manages to hold his own against, not just a random fighter, but their undisputed champion! I guess his arrogance was justified after all! /s Just think how much more satisfying it would have been if he had lost miserably and been truly humbled by the experience. I think that might have gotten the point across. This ending? Not so much.
Also, thereâs a little subplot in here about some of the Mutai participants (or fans?) accusing Walker Smith of cultural appropriation. The thing is, this is exactly what he is doing! He is attempting to use this cultural tradition for his own ends without any sort of understanding or respect for what it means to the people who created it. But instead of acknowledging this point in any meaningful way, the aliens who accused him are portrayed as unreasonable, violent, and dishonorable. Badly done, Straczynski. Badly done.
The subplot of Rabbi Koslov trying to get Ivanova to sit shiva for her father works better for me, although itâs not entirely without its problems. Look, Ivanova represses her feelings like a master, so while I disapprove of her rabbiâs meddling, I think he knows her well enough to see that she needs a push in this area. I also see it as totally believable for his character, as he admits himself in the episode. But I am glad that she calls him on it, and that the decision is ultimately hers.
Also, could Ivanova never cry again, plzkthx? Yvxr, sbe rknzcyr, ng gur raq bs frnfba sbhe? I canât take it.
Favorite scene: The one where Ivanova admits to Rabbi Koslov why she doesnât want to sit shiva for her father. We know most of this information already from âMidnight on the Firing Lineâ and âBorn to the Purple,â but the way Ivanova lays it all out for us is really effective emotionally. Also, itâs a little thing, but I like that she assures him that itâs not because she has stopped being Jewish. Paired with the earlier question of whether the alien fish is kosher or not, it is obvious that this is an area of insecurity that has been brought up by the rabbiâs visit, and she doesnât want him to go away with the wrong impression.

Ruqyah: Unlocking the Spiritual Power of Healing
Ruqyah is an Islamic practice that has been used for centuries to help unlock spiritual power and healing. It is a type of spiritual healing that uses Quranic verses to treat the physical and spiritual ailments of a person. It is believed that when these verses are recited, they carry with them a spiritual power that can help to remove negative energy, protect the person from harm, and create a positive atmosphere.
The term ruqyah comes from the Arabic root word âRaqâ which means to recite or to read. It is a practice that is used to exorcise evil spirits, cure physical and mental ailments, and restore harmony and balance to a personâs life. It can be performed by an individual or a group of people who have a special knowledge of the Quranic verses.
The practice of ruqyah has been around for centuries and is based on the belief that reciting certain verses from the Quran can bring about healing and protection. The most commonly used verses are Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Al-Baqarah. These two surahs are generally considered to be the most powerful in terms of ruqyah. Other verses that are used include Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Qasas, and Surah Al-Mumtahina.
When performing ruqyah, the person recites the verses while focusing their attention on the ailment or problem they are trying to heal or remedy. This is done while maintaining a positive attitude and faith in the power of the words being recited.
The process of ruqyah can be done on an individual level, with friends and family, or it can be done in a group setting. In the group setting, a group of people will gather and recite the verses together. This is believed to be more powerful as the energy of the group amplifies the power of the verses.
There are also medical professionals who specialize in ruqyah as a form of treatment for physical and mental illnesses. These professionals are trained to recognize the symptoms of a spiritual ailment and then prescribe the appropriate verses for healing. They will also assess the individualâs emotional and physical state and provide guidance and advice on how to improve their overall health and wellbeing.
Ruqyah Sihir is a powerful and ancient practice that has been used for centuries to bring about healing and protection. It is an effective practice that can help an individual to unlock their spiritual power and get back to a healthy, balanced state of being. By focusing on positive energy and reciting the appropriate Quranic verses, an individual can benefit from the healing power of ruqyah and use it to restore harmony and balance in their life.

I'd like to get this through by first saying that I am a Brown Asian. And I know 100% youâre not from how bigoted your statements are regarding the Asian population. And number two, I was literally not policing anybody on my original post. If you read carefully, all I was expressing was my frustrations as an Asian individual, on the Orientalist content produced by the Dragon Age fans. Nowhere did I ever say that people should stop drawing Orientalist artwork because Orientalism would still exist no matter what. It's literally a product of colonization by European powers to North African and Asian countries. So, I genuinely don't understand where my "policing" comes from in my post?
What were my statements regarding the Asian population exactly? Please, let me know, because I am pretty sure I only talked about characters in a video games and you policing people. Your post is pretty bad, doesn't answer even half of the shit that I was saying, puts straw man over straw man. I was tempted to not answer because of how angry it makes me to have my words being so disgustingly twisted.
You were not policing people over their art? I'm sorry, maybe I misread that part: "Itâs absurd that Iâm seeing artwork and fucked up depictions romanticizing Fenrisâ slavery. When in DA2, heâs clearly traumatized by the way he was treated by Danarius. You guys know that slavery isnât this, âOooh sexy, this is my masterâ sort of situation, right? Itâs torture, abuse, and an act of STEALING people from their original homeland." and also that part: "And? The way Iâm seeing people interpret Dorianâs âsilk dancingâ line as âLook at me. Iâm going to give you a raqs sharqi showâ is baffling to me because the immediate association WITH A BROWN CHARACTER, to belly dancing, on a silly line that can literally be any sort of silk dancing show, only demonstrates that nobody can take Brown people seriously."
That is policing people. You are asking artists to stop doing what they're doing, to do things in a way that you personally agree with. You want to control what an artist can or cannot make as an art.
My post was to offer you other reasons why those things marginally happened (because it's not 10 posts that have those things, it's 2 or 3). This is nowhere such a big deal as you claim it to be and you still made a whole drama over it claiming that it only comes from one source (orientalism/racism). I offered you other alternative explanations as for why that happens, and I questioned why you focused so much on male characters to begin with.
I was not discussing any shipping war or any shipping stuff. That was not what my post was about, and you literally diverted that by creating an utterly useless "rebuttal". My post specified that people were romanticizing Fenris' slavery and his trauma through art. That deserves to be criticized, and it's not "policing" to criticize harmful depictions of suffrage. Criticizing racist behavior, IS NOT POLICING.
"If you don't do art the way I want to, you're a racist" is not policing behavior? It's not harmful, there are fictional characters, no real person has been harmed because Fenris has been displayed as a slave or Dorian belly dancing, I can assure you. People have the right to romanticize fictional characters struggles and trauma, no matter what you personally think about that.
As for shipping, I draw that comparison because it is the same shit. I don't like a thing, you don't like a thing, and the answer to that is to not seek it and go into another corner of the art that you want. I personally think that a real relationship between Fenris and Anders is harmful and pretty abusive, and I still don't go around forbidding people to ship them, or tell them that, if they ship it, it means they're abusive and romanticising abuse. That would be policing. Do you understand what I'm saying?
Also, I do not give a fuck about any of the things you mentioned regarding his tattoos or whatever, because again, that is not what the post was about. đ
Your post was like "people are doing this because of that, it's bad" I answered "maybe they're doing this because of these other reasons?" You answered "this was not what the post was about".
Do you understand how moronic that part of your post is? My specific goal with my post was to tell you that MAYBE there are other reasons leading people to do art the way they do, that have nothing to do with orientalism. That MAYBE there are other reasons. Not EVERYTHING people do is about racism.
Orientalism 100% affects women. Where in the fucking world did I say it doesn't? Do you not understand that the belly dancing outfit that you see nowadays, was bastardized due to the French colonization of North African and Western Asian countries? And guess what? Belly dancing was (and still is) a common practice AMONG WOMEN. đ The belly dancing outfits you see today looks that way due to European colonizers fetishizing belly dancers, when it's just another form of cultural performing arts.
Where did I say that you think orientalism doesn't affect women exactly? Like, can you read? This is embarassing. I'm having a hard time understanding why it would be wrong drawing belly dancing. If you think that is done in a "bastardized way", I have a hard time understanding how you could know that from a drawing, which the purpose is to exaggerate movements to begin with, and that it uses real life people who are doing the actions to actually know how to draw it. Here is an example of a video from a guy dancing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2fUbld3x9I
And a picture of Dorian Pavus doing it, the only picture referencing directly to belly dancing that I could find. https://www.deviantart.com/isaacjcurran/art/Tribal-Fusion-Belly-Dancer-Dorian-539491825
Now I'm not an expert, but there is nothing "bastardized" about it, it looks overall accurate, and his outfits also doesn't really look abnormal. Could you explain to me what is bastardized from the picture?
I just happened to mention the guy characters from the Dragon Age games because those were two that popped up in my fucking head. It's not like I can list 500 million issues about the entirety of the franchise within the matter of one post analyzing the behaviors of the fans, but also the Orientalism and Islamophobia in the games themselves.
Okay, I just found it strange to focus on men, but you explained to me, now I understand better. See this is how a normal conversation usually goes.
Also, in what bubble do you genuinely think that because Tevinter is hot, it's completely justified to draw Dorian in a belly dancing outfit. Tevinter is based on the Byzantine Empire. You know, it being ROMAN??? And a part of the Byzantine Empire that was in some parts of WA and NA. But it was primarily the ROMAN EMPIRE. And you know? Italy is pretty hot. And many of the Tevinter Imperium's aesthetics draw directly from the Roman Empire, such as the buildings and the clothing of the magisters. And if Tevinter was based in an Asian country, they'd wear many layers, especially in a hotter environment because you're more prone to burning yourself by wearing fewer layers. I say this AS AN ASIAN FROM A DESERT LMAOOO.
Okay, so, I will preface it by saying that it's a video game. OrlaĂŻs is supposedly France but you have many issues with the way they handled the culture and the outfits or architecture, because it's a fantasy video game. It's not supposed to be absolutely accurate for any of it, it only draws inspiration from it. Artists do the same, it's not unthinkable that in a place such as Tevinter there could be belly dancing. It being hot would make it a better place for that, because in order to see the movements of the torso/belly, you have to be in very light clothes. You probably couldn't do a good belly dancing show outside in Ferelden, unless you're very motivated and don't feel cold. There is a climatic reasons for which specific cultures developped those dances, that can be related to the temperature (though I am no expert in that regard). Also, in video games, hot = less clothes. It's a known thing. It doesn't mean that I personally think that real life people don't wear clothes in hot places. There is a difference between fiction and reality, and fiction doesn't have to follow reality.
Now, yeah, Tevinter is based on the Byzantine Empire. I have a shiny link for you in regards to real life history: https://www.greeksongs-greekmusic.com/tsifteteli-the-greek-belly-dance/ It is totally possible that Tevinter people does tsifteteli. I'm not an historian, and I'm pretty ignorant of it, but it's not a surprise to me that culture mixed, merged and influenced one another during the long period of the Byzantine empire. So yeah, it's possible, even by drawing influences from real life.
Idk what sort of warped perception you have of the Asian population, but we genuinely do not walk around in belly-dancing outfits. I might as well start riding a magic carpet and rub a magic lamp to get a jinn out to grant me 3 wishes.
Never implied that at all.
It's an ignorant comment to make because it is 100% because Dorian is Brown. Why else would people draw him in belly-dancing clothing? The Gerudo people in BOTW (who are BROWN TOO), also wear Orientalist clothing based on Asian countries. And people have drawn NSFW of the Gerudo people, specifically from BOTW in their outfits from the game.
And yet you have no evidence of that at all. As long as you don't, I'm not going to believe you, and I'm going to call you out on your bullshit. Are we not allowed to draw brown people in NSFW outfits if they have a fantasy outfit that makes you think of a specific real life culture, is that what you're saying?
Also, it's rather concerning that you're directly exposing yourself in my reblog, by calling the Gerudo Link outfit "hot", because there are countless critiques by Asians and North Africans, telling you all, that the outfit subverts their culture in a stereotypical manner that puts a false definition of the outfits they all wear from those regions. WHICH, IS AN ISSUE FROM ORIENTALISM. I am not going to accuse you of fetishizing the Gerudo Link outfit, but you are literally perpetuating and continuing that behavior that Orientalism literally encourages by monolithically sexualizing these people from these regions.
There are many shortcuts that you're taking in that part of your argument. You state that the outfits inspired by specific cultures in a stereotypical manner, is problematic. Okay. Do you go on that about, basically, all armors, all outfits ever done in games and cinema? Because none of that is ever accurate, everyone makes a stereotypical version of any outfits for any culture at any given time. Almost no game and no movie will ask a historian about what kind of clothes specific people wore before making those. For example, this channel specifically targets movies and dresses: https://www.youtube.com/@bernadettebanner
And you know what? They do this for science too. Basically, any kind of show and any kind of video game, will show anything inspired in a stereotypical manner. It's not specific to a culture. It's specific to stories being told. That is why it is important to distinguish fiction from reality, which I'm wondering if you can do at all.
Gerudo has no affiliations to any real life culture. It's a bunch of Japanese people who were like "yeah let's put a buff women only city with light clothes under the sun". They didn't think "oh yeah let's put that specific part of the world in a city there". Link isn't going to a real place of the world, so obviously you're going to have things that are not like a real place of the world.
Now, for sure, I fetishize Link. Link in gerudo outfit is hot, but so it Link in a dress, or with high socks, or any kind of feminine outfit that is typically wore by real women. By your standard, does that mean I fetishize women? No, women are not their clothes. So even if I took your stance, and thought that, games/tv show are showing specific groups of real people in a stereotipycal way, I still wouldn't think it's fetishizing that group of people. Because people are not clothes. People are not their culture, it's a social construct.
However, we agree that if I was going to, let's say, Egypt, and demanded/thought that everyone there wore outfits similar to Ancient Egypt, and prayed Egyptian gods, that would be pretty racist and pretty much orientalism.
I'm feeling very generous, so I'm going to give you this. As something to read. You're welcome btw. <3
The specific issue described in this book, is that art that despicted specific cultures, were shown in a way to orientalise them. This is not about fictional content, this is about art depicting real life content. It's out of the scope of this discussion. I would agree with you that if you did a documentary about Japanese people, and showed them as samourais and geishas, it would be racist/orientalism. The same way that if you took a picture, ONLY of specific Japanese people wearing traditionalclothes to show it as being "the reality of Japan today" it would be racism/orientalism. Dragon Age and Breath of the Wild are not a real place with a real culture and a real group of people displayed. If you think any of the culture in DA is representative of real life cultures of any time period anywhere, you are a moron.
You could argue that Disney Aladdin is orientalism because it claims to be in a real place at a specific time period and it depicts it in a way that is inaccurate. I would agree with that. But not Dragon Age.
The way some of this fandom draws the Brown DA characters (and or has Brown playable characters themselves), is giving me an ick.
Itâs like, theyâre all drawn in this colonialist Western-lens of Brown people, where theyâre all seen as âexoticâ and âforeign.â Especially, with how some of the fanartists draw, specific Brown characters, in belly dancing clothing. When that specific version of belly dancing clothing, was introduced by French colonizers who were blatantly sexualizing the âOrientalâ population.
This doesnât seem to only pertain to Brown populations from West Asia, some of Central Asia, or South Asia, but also in Southeast Asia and with Indigenous populations in North America. Itâs extremely WEIRD to see how some of the characters that you guys make, have little to no clothing compared to your whiter characters.
Itâs incredibly dehumanizing to see any Brown character, in any form of media, as this sex object. And quite frankly, makes a LOT of us, uncomfortable that weâre seen in this fetishistic point of view.

Random Ass Question! (An RAQ... Sort of like a FAQ)
Which would you rather have: access to any and all lego sets ever created (but only one at a time, having to turn them in to get the next one), or the ability to hear any song that you want on demand as though it were in the background of your life, possibly even syncing with the events around you (but nobody else can hear it)?
My very own RAQ............woag
I would absolutely pick the lego sets though because legos are so cool but way too expensive for their own good. I don't even care if I can't keep them I'm in it for the love of the game
And for music, I think it's much easier to find opportunities to listen to music I like than build whatever lego sets I want lol
Thank you for the ask!!!

Ok so I've never written any fics before, but I was inspired and wrote this little drabble? It is 100% inspired from the fact that Taylor dropped the All Too Well scarf yesterday. Its about Brettsey and Matt coming back for the Stellaride wedding. Again I've never done this before so bear with me. Putting it under the cut so if you are still to heartbroken to read anything about them you can skip. Personally reading fics and writing this is helping me. Idk if I'll ever add to it and make it a full fic or even write anything else, but I wanted to put this out there.
He walks back in to the apartment with lemon wallpaper heâs grown to love. Heâs come back to visit for his best friend and brotherâs wedding. How could he miss seeing the man he grew with in the CFD get married to the love of his life. Being able to walk down the isle with the love of his own life was also a perk.
Sylvie comes out of the bedroom and immediately spots him. Running to greet him with jump hug. He stumbles but just for a second. After a quick make out like a couple of horny teens they separate.
âHiâ they both great each other. Quick I missed yous and I love yous are exchanged.
âYou left this last time you visitedâ Matt says as he hands Sylvie the scarf he carried with him on his flight in.
âI left it on purposeâ she tells him âI wanted you to have something of mine to remember me by, and it smells like meâ
âWell then I guess Iâll just take it back and keep it in my drawerâ he says as he kisses her.
âYou could always leave something for me.â she replies smiling.
"I think I just might have too, but first lunch I'm starving." Matt replies
They head off to the diner down the block hand in hand ready for the festivities of the coming weekend.

RAF sends Typhoons to Romania to carry out a reinforced air policing mission
Typhoon jets and personnel from the British Royal Air Force (RAF) are being sent to Romania to join the NATO air policing mission in the Black Sea region.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/27/22 - 2:27 PM in Military
Four Typhoon jets in deployment of Royal British Air Force (RAF) Squadron 3 (RAF), Coningsby RAF Base, will conduct the NATO air policing mission from Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base on the Romanian Black Sea coast.
The mission is supported by 150 employees of the Wittering RAF Base, who form the headquarters of an Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW). The staff recently received training at the RAF Operational Training Center in Leeming.
âThe United Kingdom remains committed to the security of NATO and Europe in the face of Russian aggression and the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine,â said UK Armed Forces Minister James Heappey. âOperation Biloxi is a long-standing NATO mission and the Royal Air Force is playing a central role in security and deterrence in Europe.â
Air policing is a purely defensive operation and a permanent NATO mission that began in 1961 during the Cold War. The mission ensures the safety and integrity of the airspaces of all members of the NATO Alliance. Airspace is monitored by operations centers and where the need for an interception is assessed, NATO aircraft can be activated as part of a Rapid Reaction Alert (RAQ). The United Kingdom supports Romania by increasing its own capabilities.
The implementation of the RAF in Romania was supported by personnel from Expeditionary Logistics Squadron No. 1 and Mechanical Transport Squadron No. 2, part of the RAF Support Force formed in 2020. Both squadrons prepared and transported equipment and supplies to maintain and sustain Typhoon jets during the mission.
"The arrival of our personnel and equipment in the region highlights the RAF's continued commitment and contribution to NATO's air policing mission in Romania," said Air Vice Marshal Phil Robinson, Commanding Officer of Group 11. "During the unfolding, we will work alongside our Romanian and other NATO partners, allowing the fulfillment of the mission and protecting and reassuring our allies, while creating trust and maintaining deterrence.
Operation Biloxi is the British name for NATO's air policing mission - it is the fourth time since 2017 that the RAF has conducted it. The NATO mission improves national air policing conducted by the Romanian Air Force and will see the RAF Typhoons mirror the Rapid Reaction Alert mission that is routinely carried out in the United Kingdom.
This deployment is an addition to the long-standing continuous missions carried out by NATO Allies throughout Europe's eastern flank.
