Why are the Nets so bad?

The Nets are fading fast.

The Nets have Kyrie Irving, but they’re off to a slow start. What gives?

The Brooklyn Nets are off to a disappointing start after having the biggest summer in franchise history. Sure, with Kevin Durant sidelined for the year, the Nets were never going to be in the championship discussion. But 13 games in, Brooklyn wouldn’t even make the playoffs. The team has a 5-8 record, below the Hornets, Magic and Pacers. Yikes.

This year is supposed to be a warmup year for Kyrie Irving, DeAndre Jordan and the Nets. They’re supposed to make the playoffs, maybe win the first round, and show fans that they’re a healthy KD away from glory. It’s the next phase of growth for an organization that shocked most by competing with the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of last year’s playoffs without Irving or Durant.

Instead, the Nets look like they’ve taken a big step back. They’re being outscored by 4.09 points per 100 possessions by opponents, worse than 23 other teams. These aren’t the Nets we were hoping for, and now with injuries to both Kyrie Irving (shoulder impingement) and Caris LeVert (thumb surgery), this team could nosedive quickly.

The Nets’ defense is not good

Even before the injuries, the Nets’ defense stunk. Brooklyn’s lone superstar, Irving, has never been a good defender, and nobody was expecting that to change, even in a new setting. But the rest of the Nets rotation, aside from him, hasn’t been good either, and that’s a problem.

The Nets rank No. 22 in the league in defensive efficiency, and it isn’t all Irving’s fault. Part of the issue is that Brooklyn allows the eighth-highest offensive rebounding rate (27.9 percent) in the NBA. Opponents are scoring 13.3 second-chance points per game, too. This is the same problem that existed for Brooklyn’s paltry defense a season ago when it allowed a 28 percent offensive rebounding rate, and 14.4 second-chance points per game. Jordan’s presence in a small Nets rotation hasn’t been the fix.

Brooklyn also rarely forces turnovers. Weak ball pressure around the perimeter is causing the lowest forced turnover rate in the league (12.0 percent.) The best outcome a defense can ask for is a steal, but the Nets average just 6.2 steals per 100 possessions, fourth-worst in the league. This year is even worse than last season’s 13.1 percent forced turnover rate, which ranked eighth-worst in the league.

This isn’t a starting lineup vs. bench issue. Of the four most-used five-man rotations the Nets have deployed, none is playing well on the defensive end. The Nets’ starting lineup (Irving, Joe Harris, Caris LeVert, Taurean Prince and Jarrett Allen) has played 97 minutes together, and is allowing 111.5 points per 100 possessions. That’s better than the team as a whole, but would still only rank as the 16th-best team rate in the NBA. That’s bad for a group of your supposed best players. Even though the starters are scoring 110.9 points per 100 possession, which is really good, and would rank No. 7 of all NBA offenses, the bad is outweighing the good. The Nets are losing when their starting five play together.

The bench doesn’t provide many fixes either. The Nets don’t employ any guards or wings esteemed for their on-ball defense. That’s why a player like Ja Morant, in his third game ever, was able to score 30 points on 22 shots against them in a one-point Grizzlies win. The Pacers’ Jeremy Lamb scored 25 points on 19 shots, and even the Pistons no-name guards, Bruce Brown and Luke Kennard, combined for 46 points on 39 shots.

It’s hard to win when you’re allowing opposing backcourts to have their way.

Caris LeVert is playing poorly, too

The key to this year being a success for Brooklyn was LeVert taking the next step. The Nets believed in him enough to give him a three-year, $52.5 million contract extension in August, but he hasn’t played up to it.

He’s scoring better than ever, averaging 17 points per game on 42 percent shooting, which is just one percent worse from a season ago. He’s upped his three-point shooting to 36 percent on four shots per night too. His ability to put the ball in the hoop has improved, but it’s come with consequences.

Handling the ball more than usual, LeVert’s become a turnover machine, coughing up 17 possessions per 100 plays, nearly six more than last season. And the type of turnovers he’s committing are even more crippling to the team. So far, 21 of his 31 turnovers have been bad passes, or him losing the ball. At 19.2 points per game, the Nets allow the seventh-most points off turnovers of any team in the league.

His defense hasn’t been good either. The team is better with on the floor, holding opponents to 1.6 points per 100 possessions fewer than when he’s on the bench, but the defense still isn’t good. The Nets are still allowing 108.7 points per 100 possessions when he plays, which would be the 16th-best team defense in the league, just below the Bulls. Box numbers aren’t everything, but LeVert isn’t even averaging one block + steal per game.

LeVert is going to miss the next four-to-six weeks to repair ligament damage to his thumb. Hopefully that period off will help him.

If healthy, Kyrie Irving is probably enough to get this team into the playoffs, but don’t expect them to be much better than last year

Irving is still an incredible offensive player. No matter how lackluster he is defensively, his offense will outweigh it. He’s averaging 29 points per game with seven assists and five rebounds so far, and he isn’t even shooting as well as usual yet. He’s going to will Brooklyn to the playoffs, as long as he recovers from this ominous shoulder injury.

The Eastern Conference is shallow, and Irving is one of its few stars. The Raptors, Sixers, Celtics, Bucks and Heat look likely to cruise to the top-five playoff spots, and the rest are up for the taking. When Victor Oladipo returns, the Pacers will compete, but no other team is definitely ahead of the other in the rest of the pack. The Hawks might make a run with Trae Young, the Magic might figure out their offensive struggles, but the Nets would really have to tank out to miss the postseason.

Yes, Kevin Durant should fix the Nets

It’s fair to criticize the Nets, who are underachieving with the pieces they have, but they’re also missing a generational star. KD is one of the best players on the planet, and he’s going to make Brooklyn an elite team the second he returns.

Still, this year’s Nets have been disappointing to watch. A lot of the core remains the same from last year, with the exception of Irving replacing D’Angelo Russell, and a handful of rotation pieces. The rest of the remaining group just hasn’t developed as Brooklyn hoped.

At least not yet.

Sixers Fans Should Have a “Glass Half Full” Reaction to Toronto’s Title

Nobody gave the Raptors a tougher test on their run to a title than the Philadelphia 76ers.

That’s a fact.

Some people will find that to be a negative, i.e. they’ll say, “well shit! we should have had them! but we let em off the hook!”

Other people will say, “you know what? we’re close… they needed a ridiculous final shot in game seven to eliminate the Sixers.”

I think I’d put myself in the latter category, the glass half full, where you take a step back and think, “hmm.. imagine if Joel Embiid was healthy in that series…” The Sixers had chances in games four and seven to dispatch Toronto, but it was half court offensive execution, missed shots, and some defensive rebounding that let them down.

The one thing that really stuck out to me like a sore thumb watching the Milwaukee and Golden State series is that both of those teams just did not have the size and athleticism on defense that the Sixers possess. We all should have a newfound respect for just how big the Sixers are and how disruptive they can be, how they did a great job limiting guys like Kyle Lowry, Fred VanVleet, and Serge Ibaka in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Some things worth pointing out, after the jump:

In 12 games, the Bucks and Warriors only once held Toronto below 100 points in regulation. The Sixers did it three times.

Toronto put up a 115.9 offensive rating against the Warriors, but just a 108.0 number against the Sixers.

The Raptors scored ten more points on average, per game, in the finals.

VanVleet scored 14 points per game against the Warriors, 10 against the Bucks, and just two points per game against the Sixers.

Serge Ibaka: 11 points, 5 boards, and 1.7 blocks vs GSW, 9 points, 5 boards, 0.9 blocks vs. Sixers

Kyle Lowry: 13/5/6 vs. Sixers, 16/4/7 vs. Warriors, 19/6/5 vs. Bucks.

Raptors three point shooting: 37.4% vs Bucks, 35% vs. Warriors, 29.8% vs Sixers

pace: 96.2 in the finals, 94 flat in the semifinals (game was a little slower, teams trying to limit each other in transition)

The Warriors had trouble with Toronto on the glass, while Sixers beat the Raptors on the boards up until game seven.

Raptors: 45.5 field goal percentage vs. Warriors, 43.5 vs. Sixers.

So on and so forth. The Sixers really did a nice job of being disruptive on the defensive end and making things difficult for Toronto. They forced Nick Nurse to play Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol together while slimming the bench and going heavy on starter minutes. Brett Brown I thought did a nice job going back and forth with Nurse throughout that series, and I don’t think either guy outcoached the other. Steve Kerr, for instance, had some trouble helping his team navigate the box and one that Toronto used on Steph Curry, a strategy that obviously would not have been effective with a healthy Klay Thompson or Kevin Durant on the floor.

But it is what it is, yeah? The Raptors got by the Sixers with Embiid operating at maybe 60%. They beat Golden State without Durant. That shouldn’t take away any of their accomplishments though, because they were a sound two-way team from start to finish this season, a squad certainly deserving of an NBA title.

Sixers fans should feel reassured, not disappointed, that their squad gave Toronto the toughest test of the postseason. It’s good fuel for the “let’s run it back and give it another shot” mindset.

Sixers 103, Grizzlies 95: No blown leads vs. Memphis this time around

BOX SCORE

The last time the Sixers played the Grizzlies, they were waiting for the arrival of Jimmy Butler and had just nine players. The Sixers blew a 16-point lead on Nov. 10 in Memphis and fell in overtime.

Sunday night felt much different. The Sixers held onto the lead they built in the first half and beat the Grizzlies, 103-95, to improve to 17-8.

Ben Simmons starred with 19 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. Butler had 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, including a jumper from the right wing with 49.6 seconds left to effectively seal the win. JJ Redick had a game-high 24 points.

• After a perfect shooting night Friday vs. Washington (5 for 5 from the floor, 3 for 3 from the foul line), Simmons picked up where he left off. Simmons made his first three field goals, attacking his matchup with Kyle Anderson.

Simmons maintained that mentality throughout the first half, showing no hesitation in posting up smaller defenders. He had 15 first-half points.

He had another excellent game on defense as well — Simmons is one of the only players in the NBA who can truly guard one through five. He may not be the best defender on the Sixers, but he’s the only one who opponents can’t target on a switch.

Simmons’ chemistry with his “headband brother” Butler continues to grow.

• Outside of the Sixers’ early spurt to take a 10-3 lead, the Grizzlies were successful in shaping the game to their slow, physical, testy terms.

There were plenty of long possessions, off-ball tussling and unpleasantries exchanged.

Credit Memphis for forcing the Sixers to play their style.

• T.J. McConnell made the quintessential T.J. McConnell play with 3:12 left in the first quarter. Following a made three-pointer from Landry Shamet, McConnell denied Shelvin Mack the ball. The Grizzlies tried to force a pass into Mack, the ball bounced off his leg and out of bounds, and the Wells Fargo Center crowd loved it.

McConnell, who had six points, three rebounds and three assists, has his deficiencies — he’s 2 for 9 from three-point range this season, and opponents have often succeeded at exploiting him on switches defensively. But the energy and spark he brings to the Sixers is real, and it has an impact.

• Like in the Sixers’ first meeting with the Grizzlies, Joel Embiid had an off night offensively, with 15 points on 4 for 13 shooting, but he did a stellar job on Marc Gasol. The Grizzlies’ big man had 12 points on 4 for 14 shooting.

• Wilson Chandler missed Sunday’s game with a left quad contusion sustained in a knee to thigh collision on Wednesday vs. the Wizards. Mike Muscala started in his place.

Brett Brown said he expects Chandler to play on Wednesday against the Toronto Raptors.

• Muscala guarded Jaren Jackson Jr., the Grizzlies’ impressive rookie. Before the game, Memphis coach J.B. Bickerstaff said Jackson reminded him of a young Kevin Garnett, with his “ability to put the ball on the floor, face-up jumper, and defensive acumen.”

We saw glimpses of all those qualities Sunday night from Jackson, who snuffed out with what looked like an easy fast break dunk from Simmons with a high-flying block in the first quarter.

Jackson had 17 points and three blocks.

Which NBA Playoff Teams Have The Most Star Power?

The NBA playoffs can sometimes come down to key role players knocking down clutch shots in important moments. But mostly, it’s all about the stars. The league revolves around its top players more than any other sport, and those players usually determine where the championship resides each season.

So which playoff team has the most star power? One way to measure this is to break players into tiers based on their performance metrics. A few years back, my boss Nate Silver devised a system called “star points,” which awarded teams a score based on how many stars it had on its roster. Players in the top tier of stars (“Alphas”) are worth 3 points apiece, those in the next (“Betas”) are worth 2, and the lower tier (“Gammas”) are 1 apiece. Teams generally need at least 5 of these star points in total to begin thinking about a title run, and 7 star points is where a championship roster really begins to take form.

Perhaps surprisingly, there aren’t any teams with 7 or more star points this season. The Golden State Warriors would have had 8 if DeMarcus Cousins hadn’t been injured Monday night, but Cousins is out indefinitely with a torn quadriceps and may miss the rest of the playoffs. That drops the Warriors into the co-lead with 6 star points, alongside Toronto. And that could mean a more wide-open postseason than we’ve been used to, in which role players might take on an even greater degree of importance.

To calculate star points this season, I turned to the constantly updating player talent ratings from our CARMELO projection-system depth charts. (In the previous iteration of star points, Nate used an amalgam of various advanced metrics, but that was before our player ratings updated in-season.) After resetting the cutoffs for each tier to maintain a similar number of players of each type,1 I found that the NBA has six current Alphas (four of whom are active in the playoffs), 13 Betas (12 of whom are in the playoffs, but one of those — Cousins — is injured) and 17 Gammas (13 whose teams are in the playoffs, with two injured).

In an unusual twist, two of this season’s Alphas — LeBron James and Anthony Davis — actually missed the playoffs. (Their intertwined soap opera is worth its own set of charts.) But among the postseason’s remaining star power, there are some interesting mixes of player tiers on the top teams.

The Warriors might be a surprise with only one Alpha (Stephen Curry), one Beta (Kevin Durant) and one Gamma (Draymond Green). Durant didn’t quite qualify for Alpha status, in part because he ranked only ninth in Real Plus-Minus (and 18th in Box Plus/Minus) this season. Meanwhile, Green was downgraded to a Gamma because of a weak offensive season,2 Klay Thompson barely broke even in projected plus/minus talent (+0.1), and Cousins now appears to be lost for at least most of the playoffs. The usual caveats about the Warriors’ sometimes lax regular-season efforts apply, but based on performance metrics, this team’s name recognition might outpace its actual star power at this point.

And yet, only the Raptors match the Warriors in that regard among postseason teams. They also did it in a very different way: Unlike Golden State, Toronto boasts no Alphas, but it does have one Beta (Kyle Lowry) and four Gammas (Kawhi Leonard, Pascal Siakam, Danny Green and Marc Gasol). Wait … Lowry is a Beta and Leonard is only a Gamma? The difference between the two (+4.0 vs. +3.7) is so slim as to be splitting hairs, but Leonard had a surprisingly down year in RPM, ranking just 37th in the league, while Lowry ranked 20th. The broader point, however, is that Toronto has assembled an unusually deep stable of star talent. The team has long been known for its depth down the roster, but a series of moves helped turn that depth into something slightly different: a collection of quasi-star-level talent at the top of the lineup.

The Rockets and Sixers rank just below the Warriors and Raptors in star points with 5 apiece, but where in that group is Milwaukee, the East’s No. 1 seed? The Bucks have perhaps the Alpha of all Alphas this season in Giannis Antetokounmpo. But only one other player around him qualified as a star: Eric Bledsoe is a Gamma, while Brook Lopez barely misses the cutoff. Milwaukee’s overall lack of supporting star power would make it a historical anomaly if it does end up winning the NBA title.

The Utah Jazz, in the midst of a brutal first-round matchup against the Rockets, also has very little star power (one Beta in Rudy Gobert). But they have a bunch of guys who just barely missed Gamma status: Joe Ingles, Derrick Favors, Ekpe Udoh and Donovan Mitchell all had CARMELO plus/minus ratings under +2.5 but greater than +1.5. If we added an extra category for “Deltas” — worth, say, a half-point per player — the Jazz would leapfrog Boston and be much closer to the top of the heap than the bottom.

Regardless, there’s a reason that star points don’t track perfectly with a team’s CARMELO rating or its championship odds. Depth does matter some, even if the effect is less of a factor as rotations shorten during the postseason. And sometimes teams are simply built with a blueprint that helps them perform better than their star power would suggest (the Bucks are a good test case there as well), while others aren’t quite as good as their multiple stars say they should be (the Sixers could be lumped into that group).

Before they blew a 31-point lead Monday night — and, more importantly, lost Cousins to injury — the Warriors were looking every bit the star-studded machine we thought they’d be all season long. Now, they are still sizable favorites to win it all, but their edge in star power is not quite as decisive as it’s been in recent seasons. We’ll find out soon enough whether that will matter in Golden State’s quest for a third straight championship, or if another team near the top of the rankings above can finally supplant the Warriors and build a star-powered legacy of its own.

Lowry Leaving Jurassic?:

After telling reporters that he would choose to opt out of his contract with Toronto, reports are now claiming that Kyle Lowry would be interested in playing for his hometown team, the Philadelphia 76ers.

Despite the Raptors regular season success over the past couple of years, they have continuously failed to see any sort of success in the post season because of LeBron James and the Clevelsnd Cavaliers.

Last season, the Raptors suffered a loss to the Cavs after a six game series, and this last season they were swept in four games.

The Raptors backcourt power of Demar Derozan and Lowry has not appeared to be enough to lead the Raptors over the top.

With a young nucleus of players in Joel Embid and Ben Simmons, Lowry could be a great veteran asset to get the 76ers back into the playofff picture.

Lowry who has been one of the top guards in the Eastern Conference, averaged 22 points, seven assists, and four rebounds per game, while shooting 46% from the field.

Whichever team lands Lowry, will be getting a great veteran point guard.

Canelo Destroys Chavez Jr:

Saul `Canelo` Alvarez defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on Saturday night by a unanimous decision.

Canelo was too much for Chavez Jr, who lost all 12 rounds and left no questions as to who was the better fighter.

Chavez was not throwing nor landing any punches and as a result the score was 120-108 three times.

Canelo appeared to be inviting Chavez into throwing punches by putting himself against the ropes, but Chavez refused to do so and as a result was dominated throughout the entire matchup.

At certain points of the fight, the crowd began to taunt Chavez Jr by booing him.

Canelo is now scheduled to take on Gennady Golovkin in September.

Cavs and Warriors on a Collision Course:

With the conference finals nearing, there are only two teams who stand undefeated, the Golden state Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

These two teams are the first to go 8-0 in the first two rounds of the post season and it appears that they will meet up again in the finals.

The Cavaliers don`t appear to have any competition in the East and the Cavaliers appear to be able to get past any team in both the East and the West.

The Warriors are coming off of winning 73 games last year and yet they lost in the finals against the Cavs.

The Warriors addition of Kevin Durant makes them the odds on favorite in many peoples eyes.

The Warriors will await the winner of the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs while the Cavs will await the victor of the Washington Wizards and the Boston Celtics.

The Week Ahead: Week 12

Hello and welcome back to the Week Ahead. Every Saturday I’m going to be right here breaking down the weekly schedule and the latest injury report, and I’ll also include some hot pickups for your fantasy team and some players you should consider dropping. Everyone loves rumors, so I’ll also provide some insight on some of the trending topics around the league. For NBA news and fantasy advice, find me on Twitter by clicking here!

Notes: With just one game on the schedule, owners in weekly leagues should not be starting any Nuggets and that includes fantasy superstar Nikola Jokic. As for the teams with two games, the only players I would start are Kemba Walker, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, Hassan Whiteside and Eric Bledsoe.

If you’re looking to take advantage of a five-game week for the Bulls, Michael Carter-Williams, Doug McDermott and Nikola Mirotic should still be available in a lot of leagues. In case it's not obvious, Jimmy Butler is by far the top play of the week in all formats.

Top 3 Adds of the Week:

T.J. McConnell (15% owned)- I just don’t see him losing his starting job when Sergio Rodriguez (ankle) is able to return. The 76ers are 3-1 when McConnell starts this season, and the PG is averaging 11.0 points, 10.5 assists, 5.8 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 0.8 3-pointers in that span on 52.8 percent shooting. He obviously won’t be playing 36 minutes a night when Rodriguez returns, but a 30-minute role with the way he’s been playing can’t be ruled out. Just add him and see what happens.

Malcolm Brogdon (52% owned)- He’s been the second best rookie this season behind The Process and similar to T.J. McConnell, Brogdon is running away with the starting PG role with Matthew Dellavedova on the shelf with a hamstring issue. Brogdon has made five starts this season and is averaging 12.0 points, 6.8 assists, 5.6 rebounds and 0.6 triples on 41.1 percent shooting, and the numbers show that he’s a much better fit next to Giannis Antetokounmpo.

James Johnson (49% owned)- It’s tough to pick him up with only two games on the schedule, but Johnson should be owned everywhere with the big picture in mind. Justise Winslow (shoulder) is out for the season, meaning Johnson is locked into a role with minutes in the 30s the rest of the way, barring a trade of course. He's averaging 19.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.8 blocks, 1.3 steals and 3.5 triples over his last four games and not many players can fill up a box score quite like he can. Just keep in mind that these numbers will take a small hit when Hassan Whiteside (eye) returns.

The Drop List:

Justise Winslow- He’s not coming back this season.

Rajon Rondo- It’s possible the Bulls trade or waive him, but what team would take a chance on him?

Monta Ellis- The Pacers are going to bring him off the bench for the foreseeable future.

Chandler Parsons- He’s still limited to 37 seconds per game.

Brandon Jennings- Ron Baker took his backup PG minutes on Friday. Ron Baker…

Matthew Dellavedova- This is Brogdon’s job now.

Jodie Meeks- Evan Fournier is back.

Jahlil Okafor- It’s now obvious. Nerlens Noel is a much better fit in Philly than Okafor. The Joel Embiid and Noel lineup combo has a net rating of 33.1 this season, while the Okafor-Embiid combo has a -21.5 net rating. Okafor picked up a DNP-CD on Friday, so he needs a trade in the worst way.

Quote of the Week:

“If your big guys don’t dominate, you have to go small,” Raptors head coach Dwane Casey said. “I tell Jonas Valanciunas: ‘Oh you want to play more? Then Dominate. I don’t want to see fadeaways over 6-8 guys. Get to the rim. Get every offensive rebound. If not, you’re coming out.’” J-Val responded with 18 points and 13 rebounds against the Jazz, so hopefully he got the message.

Trade Rumors:

The Kyle Korver trade is now complete, but the Hawks aren’t done yet. Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical said the Hawks are actively shopping Paul Millsap and expects a deal to be reached “sooner rather than later.” Five teams have been linked to Millsap in the Pelicans, 76ers, Kings, Raptors and Nuggets, but Millsap’s value would be safe anywhere he lands. If Millsap is traded and the Hawks don’t bring in another PF, Mike Muscala would be an intriguing pickup. The forward has been impressive all season as the first big off the bench and has per-36 minute averages of 13.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 0.9 steals, 1.1 blocks and 1.4 triples on 52.9 percent shooting from the field and 75.0 percent from the line. For what it’s worth, the Hawks are asking for at least a quality first-round pick in exchange for Millsap.

According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Nuggets are now actively shopping Jusuf Nurkic. The Nuggets have been able to showcase Nurkic over the past three games with Kenneth Faried (back) on the shelf, and he looked great with averages of 12.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 0.7 blocks in 20.0 minutes per game in that span. He’s not going to break out in Denver because this is Nikola Jokic’s team, so Nurkic’s owners should be rooting for a trade. This certainly increases his stash appeal and there are a lot of teams that could use a two-way big in Nurk Alert.

ESPN’s Stein adds that the Nuggets are also shopping Faried, Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari, but you likely already knew that. The Nuggets certainly have the assets to trade for Paul Millsap, but they also might be looking to open up minutes on the wings for Jamal Murray and Juancho Hernangomez. Faried would likely gain value in a trade since he’s in the doghouse in Denver, while Chandler and Gallinari would take a hit in a new city because they are in an ideal situation as it is.

The Heat’s asking price for Goran Dragic is still too high according to Stein, but he hints that that could change as we approach the deadline. In case it’s not obvious, Tyler Johnson and Josh Richardson should be owned everywhere and their ceilings will increase significantly if Dragic is moved. As for the Dragon himself, his owners should be hoping for a trade because owning veterans on tanking teams is always a risk during the fantasy playoffs.

The Nets’ asking price for Brook Lopez is two first-round picks according to Stein, but they aren’t in any hurry to move him. The Nets are rebuilding the right way this time and they will let the market come to them. Now that Lopez is a reliable 3-point weapon, that price isn’t unrealistic. Justin Hamilton would be a pickup in all formats if the Nets find a new home for Lopez.

Ric Bucher of Bleacher Report said this week that the Bulls were open to dealing Jimmy Butler, but Bucher isn’t the most reliable source and Marc Stein of ESPN refuted those reports. Butler is the type of player you build around, so moving him with the way he’s been playing would be insane. He’s the best shooting guard in the NBA, assuming James Harden is considered a PG now.

Portland has been “tracking” Tyson Chandler according to Stein, but that wouldn’t be a great spot for his value with Mason Plumlee locked into the starting center role. The big takeaway here is that the Suns are more than likely going to find a new home for Chandler, so that increases the stash appeal of both Alex Len and even Alan Williams. We’ve seen what Len can do in an expanded role, but Williams could also become a sneaky source of value. Williams has impressive per-36 minute averages of 14.6 points, 15.9 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2.6 blocks.

We already know that the Mavs are going to shop their veterans at the deadline including Andrew Bogut and Deron Williams, but Stein is hearing that they’re not looking to deal Wesley Matthews for now. Matthews couldn’t be in a better spot for value, so this is wonderful news for his owners and a slight buzzkill for the outlooks of Seth Curry and Justin Anderson.

Injury Report: Accurate as of Saturday at 2:00 ET

Jeremy Lin (hamstring) still has no timetable to return. However, the hamstring issue is a “different area,” so his recovery won’t be as long as his first extended absence. “Yeah, I can definitely say that. It’s a different area, the other side, and it hurt a lot less when it happened,’’ Lin said. “Everything’s progressing better than the previous one, so I’m definitely very encouraged. Yeah, definitely if it was the same exact spot, it’d be a different tune.”

The Hornets confirmed that Nicolas Batum hyperextended his right knee and that he will not play Saturday against the Spurs. An MRI showed no structural damage, but most reports indicate that he will miss 1-2 weeks. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Marco Belinelli and Jeremy Lamb all get a boost with this report, but Lamb might be the most intriguing if coach Steve Clifford finally gives him an extended look — Lamb has per-36 minute averages of 19.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.7 steals, 0.8 blocks and 1.2 triples.

Cody Zeller (concussion) could return any day now and is considered questionable for Saturday’s game vs. the Spurs.

J.J. Barea (leg) will return from injury on Saturday vs. the Hawks, but his minutes are going to be limited for a while. His return lowers the ceiling of both Seth Curry and Deron Williams, and it may push Devin Harris out of the rotation.

Nikola Jokic (illness) is questionable for Saturday’s game vs. the Thunder, while Kenneth Faried (back) is returning from a three-game absence. Look for Faried to split the center minutes with Jusuf Nurkic in a “showcase game” if Jokic is held out.

Blake Griffin (knee) had a routine follow-up examination on Thursday and coach Doc Rivers said he "looked great” and that he is making progress. He had surgery back on Dec. 20 and was given a 4-6 week timetable, meaning we could see him return at some point in January. Like we saw on Friday night, Austin Rivers will be relevant until Griffin returns to the lineup.

Hassan Whiteside (eye) has rejoined the Heat in Los Angeles and is hopeful to return to the lineup for Sunday's game vs. the Clippers. Whiteside was seen working out on Friday night before the Heat took on the Lakers and his eye looked so much better. If he’s able to give it a go Sunday, Willie Reed will lose most of his value. With the Heat tanking, it’s still not a bad idea for Whiteside’s owners to handcuff him with Reed down the stretch.

Sergio Rodriguez (ankle) is "hopeful" he will be ready to play Sunday in Brooklyn, but it’s too late. T.J. McConnell has stolen his job.

George Hill (concussion) is listed as out for Saturday’s game vs. the Wolves because he has not cleared the concussion protocol yet.
