SoundBlaster EVO - A Good Sub - $40 Gaming Headset
Tumblr media
I am not a good guy to review audio hardware. I have a degenerative problem with my hearing, and by the time I am 60 years old I may (likely) need a hearing aid or surgery, or I will be clinically deaf (yay). So as I slowly losing my hearing I’m not a good person to talk about audio quality. I was going to share review video, but I couldn’t find one in english, other than a review from RapidPurple where he talks about how awesome and powerful they are … not about the quality of the high, mid, and low tones; obviously I am not sharing that review video because it’s nearly pointless.  So I am going to talk about build quality, features, and the long use feel of the headset. One additional note. I only paid $18 for this headset. At the time of writing this article the headset is running about $32 on Amazon.
Build Quality
I am going to compare the build quality of these headphones to the Creative Labs HITZ WP380 which came out around the same year (another set of Stereo Wireless headphones around 2013-2014). Unlike the HITZ WP380 the SoundBlaster EVOs do not have weak collapsing hinges and Pivots (my WP380s broke after a few months). The slide adjustments for sizing the headphones has a sturdy and physical click (you feel it). The cans are mounted on a pin pivot system. On first glance they seem flimsy, but when handling these headphones they are actually really strong. The padding for the circum-oral cans feels nice and soft to the touch, and the choice in materials, although not leather, are really soft and comfortable in long wear situations. All-in-all much better than the WP380s
Features
The headset comes with a 5ft USB 2.0 cable, and a 5ft 4 pol 1/8” diameter headphone cable for connecting to your smartphone. Both the USB cable and Headphone Cable connectors can be found on the right can (ear phone) as are both of the microphones (the one mounted on the SoundBlaster button is used for noise cancelation, and one on the bezel just behind the right ear cushion towards the users mouth which is the microphone used for voice), according to my friends the mikes noise canceling is good, and it improves the voice quality. Noise cancelation can only be used through the SoundBlaster software. The headphones also support emulated Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound through the SoundBlaster software, but it really didn’t make much of a difference for me in my games (hearing issues and such).
Conclusion
Now I know that I am supposed to say that these headphones sound amazing, and I can tell you that for the $18 I spent on them that they do sound better than most other $20 headphones and earbuds that I have ever purchased, and since they double as a really good gaming headset it’s an even better value. That said, when these were released in 2013 they cost $180, so they should be better than the average $20 headphones. Even at $38 they are a real value, so if you are looking for a reasonably priced headset for you're gaming needs, to listen to music, to chat on Skype, or as a backup for when your main headset is out of reach these are the cans for you.
Oh ... no article next week, but the following week I am reviewing a pair of Steel Series Stratus XL control pads.
