Former staffers reveal what made the channel so special—and why MuchMusic has failed to reclaim its former glory despite a relaunch

When MuchMusic first aired in 1984, it was dubbed “Canada’s answer to MTV.” The channel launched the careers of musicians Barenaked Ladies and Bryan Adams as well as media personalities like Nardwuar and George Stroumboulopoulos. Its studio space at 299 Queen Street West in Toronto, once famously open to anyone on the sidewalk, was the nucleus of music in Canada, the home base for original programming like RapCity and the Much Countdown as well as the annual MuchMusic Video Awards.

I got invited to be a guest on Madelyne Woods's show, Video LP, as a dancer. When the producers from RapCity heard me talking about my experiences on the road with Heavy D and Bobby Brown, they were like, 'You would be perfect for RapCity.' And at the time, they didn't have any female voices representing them. The men at the helm really had to be convinced though, because I didn't fit the mold they had envisioned. I was told to my face, 'You are not the girl that men want to see on a regular basis.' But the producers fought for me to be hired. I've always had to prove myself talent first.

For example, dancing in L.A. versus New York is totally different. In New York, it was always like, knee pads and Doc Martens, and 'Come with the skill.'

L.A. is like, 'Stand in a line and let's see how pretty you are. Okay, you stay, you stay, you go,' and you don't even get a chance to audition if you don't have the body type or look the way they want. I've been in rooms where I knew I could dance circles around all of the girls there, but never got the chance because I didn't fit the image of what they thought was beautiful.

I went to go see Drop the Needle in the movie theatre in London, Ontario and it was quite the affair. It was the only time I’ve ever gone to a film and known pretty much everyone in the place. All of the big DJs in the city were there, as was much of the Hip Hop scene, artists and fans. It was rea
