Randyland is a free eclectic outdoor museum located on the Northside of Pittsburgh. The founder, Randy Gilson bought the property for $10,000 using a credit card. Upcycled objects, sculptures, paintings and murals began to fill the space, and the rest is history.
Included in the story of Randyland is how Gilson met and fell in love with his partner, David Paul Francis “Mac” McDermott. McDermott would go on to help Gilson build the museum. Sadly, he passed away from cancer in 2019.
The museum is open year round from 12-7pm.

EDIT: FALSE ALARM, THE URA IS NOT DEMOLISHING RANDYLAND
So I know a lot of Pittsburghers, obviously myself included, panicked when this hit social media:
[ID: A piece of white paper posted over a painted Randyland sign. At the top of the original sign you can read the words, “Keep clean thanks, Randyland.” The paper reads, “Demolition Notice. Randyland Gardens (Established 20 Years Ago). 1400 Block Jacksonia St. and Arch St. 30 Day Notice. June 2, 2023. For more information, please contact Pittsburgh URA.” End ID.]
I even saw a screenshot in the comments on this Facebook post (which has now also been edited) that Randy Gilson himself posted about complaints from a neighbor and saying goodbye to the space, using the words “today the world picks on happy people and happiness everywhere” (except his version was in all caps). However.
The Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Authority is not taking Randyland down. I don’t know if Randy just panicked about the complaint, as local social media did, or what exactly happened, but there is no need to contact the URA, they did not put up that sign neither are they planning to destroy Randyland.
I had emailed when I saw the “news,” and this is the response I received from Tanika Harris of the Pittsburgh URA:
[ID: A screenshot from an email with the subject line “Randyland/URA Communication.” The body of the email reads, “Good Afternoon, Thank you for reaching out! The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has no intention of demolishing the community garden, affectionately known as Randyland. The demolition sign that was posted on Friday, June 2 did not come from the URA or any of our affiliates. The URA has been in conversation with Randy Gilson, Community Garden Curator and Councilman Bobby Wilson. We are committed to ensuring a safe space for all residents and will continue to work with our partners to bring about clarity, transparency, and community.” End ID.]
So I apologize for the quick reaction, I know I’m not the only one who freaked out and I am sure the URA has been absolutely flooded with emails and phone calls about this. It sounds like Randy is the one who put up the sign and while I still do not fully understand what went down, Randyland is not in danger from the URA.
So spread this word, I guess, especially to fellow Pittsburghers.

Randy's Pot of Gold
Randy’s Pot of Gold
Randy Gilson grew up poor in a small mill town just outside Pittsburgh’s city limits. As one of six children from a “broken” family, he remembers being teased by schoolmates, who called him “dumb, stupid, dadless, welfare boy, and white trash.” But his mother, a minister, advised him to ignore the noise, and instilled in him a commitment to do good for others. Her voice became Randy’s moral…

On Assignment: News Post (April 13, 2017)
Built on Steel, Pittsburgh Now Thrives on Culture
photographer: Jeff Swensen
This article talks about how Pittsburgh used to thrive off of its steel production but since industry collapsed in the 1980s, the city has found new ways to grow and support its communities. This city shows a wide variety of diversity as well as many historical and cultural sites. The article mentions a few of the places that people can visit even on a tight budge and still get the experience of the city. The article talks about some of the hidden treasures of the city such as the Conflict Kitchen and the “House Poem.”
The images in this article are simple but yet they still show some of the characteristic of the city of Pittsburgh. Having been to Pittsburgh a few times in the past, I feel that these images do show a lot about the smaller parts of the city and not the typical things that everyone sees. They give a unique look perspective of the city which I feel adds to the overall feel and purpose of the article.

Randyland is the labor of love of Pittsburgh, PA artist Randy Gilson, a local artist and neighborhood renovator. Over the years Gilson, a man in his 50s, has almost singlehandedly turned a blighted neighborhood corner in Pittsburgh’s Mexican War Streets into one of the most colorful spectacles in the city. Every square inch of his corner building is brightly painted and decorated with pink flamingos, giant banana plants, mismatched lawn furniture, mannequins, and plastic dinosaurs, among many, many other pieces of found ephemera. The space functions as a home, garden and artist’s space that Gilson shares with like-minded creators. His work began in the 80s, as an act of love for his deteriorating neighborhood. After turning his home into a candy-colored anti-depressant of a structure, Gilson has spread his artistic influence to the surrounding areas of the neighborhood, seeding art and installation projects throughout a 30-block radius. He has erected hundreds of “streetscapes,” worked on establishing multiple public parks in empty lots, and contributed to a number of community gardens. Prior to the establishment of Randyland and its joyous influence, Pittsburgh’s Central Northside was a neighborhood in decline, but Gilson’s enthusiasm, elbow grease, and scavenger’s instincts have managed to turn the area into more wonderland and less copland. Now, Randy estimates that he’s installed 800 streetscapes, 50 vegetable garden plots and eight parks. #destroytheday (throwback post from 2/5/14)

Music Makers Blues Review
John Scofield Band w/ Dennis Chambers+Mike Stern & Randy Brecker
"Two of the biggest guitar stars of jazz and fusion in a very rare and incendiary jazz guitar double bill – both with all star bands, including the legendary trumpeter, Randy Brecker and drummers, Dennis Chambers and Lenny White. “Scofield can make his guitar howl, plead, laugh, argue, and preach – deep passion and almost unbearable beauty” (The Scotsman). A man of many parts, a virtuoso guitarist with a genuine jazz sensibility. He worked with historic figures like Miles, Mingus, Chet Baker and created many historic groups of his own. Uberjam is his hard-groove band playing funk-oriented jazz-rock, propelled by the red-hot Dennis Chambers on drums. Mike Stern's four-decade career featured stints with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Billy Cobham, Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, the Brecker Brothers and Joe Henderson, before he launched a solo career that has propelled to him to a global star. 16 recordings as a leader (six nominated for GRAMMY® Awards) and thousands of high energy gigs, with many of the greats of the current scene – including this band with co-leader and fellow giant of the New York jazz and fusion scene, Randy Brecker. Two electrifying soloists whose blistering chops combine rock–blues firepower with sophisticated jazz harmonies. John Scofield (guitar), Avi Bortnick (rhythm guitar/samplers), Andy Hess (bass), Dennis Chambers (drums). Mike Stern (guitar), Randy Brecker (trumpet), Teymur Phell (bass), Lenny White (drums)"
