fun fact: in the room before the second hornet fight, the game doesn't unload her sprite after she runs off screen, so she just keeps running in the direction she left out of bounds, forever!

mag isma’s mag isma’s!!! with both dashmaster and spell twister for now, but hopefully trying it spell twister only in the future. if you want to know the history of this skip, fireb0rn has a good video on it below! only a handful of people have done it (mostly bc it sucks and no one wants to dedicate time to grinding it other than rando players) and im proud to now be one of them :D
youtube
the original clip had my friends talking in the background, so i removed the audio out of respect for them. done single-segment for a multiplayer splits rando i was playing!!!! i was required to get wings without crystal heart, and had the option to get isma’s right after, and decided killing dung defender wasn’t interesting enough for me ^^; it took somewhere between 4-5 hours of practice but it was super fun and i would do it again :D

What video is that?
it's this one!
youtube
the reason this video was uploaded at all is that it was previously thought that fireball was required to make this skip possible, pictured below:
youtube
as shown in staxis' video, the first part can be done with a well-timed inventory drop into thorns, giving the player early control. the second part is possible but very tight.
HOWEVER the inventory drop is not possible in vanilla hollow knight. opening your inventory in midair requires either qol mod or an older patch, and getting early control from inventory dropping into hazards only is possible on current patch, rendering this version of the skip impossible in any speedruns. here's a second version of the skip that the friend uploaded, which does not have 94K views, and is actually possible outside of randomizers:
youtube
this would have been understood by the target audience of the video, ie not the majority of the people getting it recommended to them on youtube. besides that, the skip is almost completely useless in any way, except for if you're playing randomizer and desperately need to check sheo with only claw and dash for some bizarre reason. i guess if you're playing lockout and want to lock your opponent out of the goal? but the shadeskip takes so long to set up and the chances of messing it up are high because of how tight it is. Not Worth
anyway that concludes my infodump. go watch his world record. he deserves to be famous

Advice for the dream version of false champion (forget the name). I know it's just a harder version of the first one but it's giving me trouble
OH FAILED CHAMP, this guy is infamous for being extremely easy with certain items and absolutely hellish without.
for failed champ, you want multiple of the following:
1. Abyss Shriek/Wraiths or Shade Soul/Vengeful Spirit (shriek being ideal)
2. Shaman Stone
3. Nail Upgrades (if they're your style)
4. if you're playing rando please please please don't go in there without dash unless you need to, it's in hard logic but it will make your life hell
The first thing you need to know about failed champ is that healing outside of staggers is not going to work, even with charms like quick focus. You'll be lucky to get a heal off before you're likely hit for 2 damage.
I also don't recommend Joni's, because it's extremely easy to heal in between staggers as long as you can make it that far. Like most bosses, failed champ has staggers that last a certain amount of time after he loses enough HP. Unlike most other bosses, each time failed champ is hit during that stagger, the amount of time before he stands up actually resets, and hitting his armor without damaging him counts too!
Essentially, this means that during each stagger you can alternate between hitting his armor, dream nailing for soul, and healing to get to full HP.
If you'd prefer to kill failed champ with just nail, that's definitely a respectable option, but I recommend trying out some spells during this fight if you feel comfortable with the idea! Might as well put any extra soul to use, after all.
A single shriek with shaman hits for 120 damage, and if you manage to dash under him as he's slamming his mace down you can get a shriek or two off before he turns around. If you kept the maggots outside alive they can be dream nailed for soul before entering the fight.
Casting a shade soul at failed champ can also double or triple hit him due to hitbox shenanigans I won't bore you with. This is much easier to do the further you cast it away from him. After each stagger he moves to the center of the arena and stays there for a bit, which is a great opportunity to get some shrieks and/or shade soul doubles in!
Other charm recommendations, if you have the notches for them:
1. Fragile charms don't break after dying to dream bosses, making fragile strength/heart viable options.
2. Spell Twister, for more casts of soul
3. Other health-increasing charms, such as lifeblood core/heart
4. Quick slash, if you decide to go the nail route
5. Dream Wielder is a great charm for fc once you're comfortable with the fight, particularly in pantheons where you may not go in with full soul.
As an addendum, here's a sloppily recorded failed champ fight to showcase Just How Powerful abyss shriek, shaman, and dream wielder are:

old vs new (potentially) path of pain strat??? normally they do a wall jump at the end there, but it’s possible to make it up w/ a full wings jump. pop is super optimized and schy said it might save around .2 seconds which is a Lot!!!! idk if this is gonna actually end up being relevant and tbh i just did it by accident the first time, but i wanted to post this here bc im super proud of finding smth ppl might start using :D

i got bored today so here’s vertical-less crystalized mound :D you can get to ddark without claw or wings! it’s extremely useless in vanilla because u need claw to get desolate dive to even get into this room, but it’s a fun trick in rando ♥
(basically, step one: shadeskip. step two: improvise and cry)
