Katara of the Fire Nation - Chapter 11

Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, Chapter 7, Chapter 8, Chapter 9, Chapter 10

I have no words, but betrayal hurts.

Zuko was at war with himself; after freeing the avatar’s bison, he became gravely ill.

Zuko was at war with himself, caught between right and wrong, his whole life was laid before him.

But as he becomes better, he starts to dream, he dreams of dragons, and scars, but then he dreams of water, of a girl with blue eyes and brown hair. She has her back to him, but he can hear her screaming, screaming in pain, she’s begging for mercy, but mercy from what?

Zuko calls out her name, he reaches for her, she turns towards him and suddenly she’s smiling, her face is soft, yet wet from tears, but she’s smiling, laughing as Zuko steps closer to her.

He says her name again, and she starts to reach for him.

“Save me,” she whispers, her voice is soft as a wind starts to blow. As the wind blows, Katara starts to turn to dust.

“I don’t understand,” he gapes, trying to take her hand.

“Save me,” she says again, this time her voice is masked with pain, her eyes lose their light and she starts to cry.

The wind carries the girl away, it coils around her and turns her to dust, it carries her far away from Zuko almost possessively.

“Wait!” he shouts, trying to chase after the girl.

But the wind is too strong.

Zuko awakens with the girls name on his lips.

…

Katara is conflicted, she spends an hour, watching Zuko and his uncle run their tea shop; they don’t seem to be up to anything sinister. Zuko seems happy, he’s smiling and laughing with his uncle.

But he is the Fire Lord’s son, he is Fire Nation in Ba Sing Se, they have been trying to take down this city for years. She cannot risk the innocent lives that live here, she cannot take any chances. Katara runs back to the palace, she sees the Kyoshi Warriors and before she knows what’s happening; the words are rolling off her tongue, she is telling them of Zuko’s infiltration of Ba Sing Se.

One of the Warriors steps further into the light, and Katara’s heart almost stops in her chest as she recognises the girl under the makeup.

“Azula.”

Katara bends water out of her pouch, but before she can attack, Ty Lee is there, and Katara’s chi is blocked.

The next thing she knows, Katara is waking up in a cave, surrounded by glowing green crystals.

Katara does everything she can to try and escape, Katara screams herself hoarse as she tries to call for help.

As she paces, the earth opens above her and a Dai Li agent looks down.

“You’ve got company,” he says, suddenly a man is thrown down the hole and lands at Katara’s feet.

The man moves onto his knees and then looks up to Katara.

“Zuko?!” she gapes as the hole is closed above them.

…

Zuko looks up to Katara, her hair is a mess, and her face is set hard in anger, but he can tell that she has been crying, she’s been screaming.

“What did they throw you in here?!” she demands as Zuko sits with his back to her, “Oh, wait, let me guess, it’s a trap, so that when Aang shows up to help me you can finally have him in your little Fire Nation clutches.”

Zuko looks over his shoulder to Katara, but he cannot find the words to say.

“You’re a terrible person, you know that?” Katara snarls, “Always following us, hunting the avatar, trying to capture the world’s last hope for peace.” Zuko still remains silent, “But what do you care, you’re the Fire Lord’s son, spreading war and violence and hatred is in your blood.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Zuko finally says, Katara’s anger boils in her stomach.

“I don’t?!” Katara snaps, “How dare you?!”

“Just stop it, Katara,” Zuko sighs.

“NO!” Katara snaps back, “You have no idea what this war has done to me, me personally! You think I was in the Fire Nation on my own will?! You think I wanted to be thousands of leagues across the sea, so far from my home?! Do you even know what I went through? I was a prisoner, Zuko, I was your prisoner!”

“It wasn’t like you were an actual prisoner,” Zuko snaps back, becoming tired of Katara’s yelling, “it’s not like you were treated badly!”

“Really?! Tell that to the magnitude of wounds I had to heal, the wounds you gave me!” Katara shouts, tears well in her eyes, “Do you have any idea what happened before I was brought before you father?! Before I was shoved onto a ship, into a small cell with no water or food?!”

Zuko remains quiet, he watches as Katara turns her back on him and kneels in the dirt.

“I watched my mother die,” Katara whispers, her hand going to the pendant around her neck, “The Fire Nation took my mother from me, and then they took me.”

“I’m sorry,” Zuko says, his voice softer as he watches Katara cry, “That’s something we have in common.”

Zuko has never told Katara about his mother, Katara never knew the story of Fire Lady Ursa or why she wasn’t around anymore.

Katara doesn’t pry, she doesn’t say a word as Zuko stands to his feet and looks around the cave awkwardly.

“I’m sorry I yelled at you before,” Katara says, standing to her feet.

“It doesn’t matter,” Zuko says, looking away from Katara.

The two stand in the cave awkwardly, not saying much, barely looking at each other.

“We used to be friends,” Katara says, sitting down with her back against a crystal, “You and me, we used to be so close.”

“Things change,” Zuko says, trying to distance himself from Katara.

“Yes,” Katara sighs, and Zuko notices the way she rolls her shoulder, “They do. Now whenever I think of the enemy, I see your face.”

“My face,” Zuko says, putting a hand to his scar, “I see.”

“No,” Katara says, standing to her feet, “No, that’s not what I meant.”

“It’s alright,” Zuko says, turning away from Katara, “I used to think this scar marked me, the mark of the banished prince; cursed to chase the avatar forever. But lately, I’ve realised that I’m free to choose my own destiny, even if I’m never free of my mark.”

“Maybe you could be free of it,” Katara says, Zuko looks back to her with wide eyes.

“You can’t heal a scar, Kat,” he says, “Even if you could, there’s a reason I never let you do it in the first place.”

“I’m not afraid of your father,” Katara says, stepping towards Zuko and then taking out a vial, “This is water from the spirit oasis in the North Pole; it has special properties so I’ve been saving it for something important.”

“You want to use it?” Zuko gapes, “On me?”

“I don’t know if it will work,” Katara admits.

Zuko watches as Katara stands in front of him, he closes his eyes and then feels Katara’s hand on his face, she touches his scar gently and he can’t help but lean into her touch. She’s the only one, the only one who has touched his scar.

But just as she is about to open the vial, the earth next to them explodes and the Avatar walks into the cave, followed by Iroh.

“Aang!” Katara smiles, running to the avatar and embracing him in a hug.

The avatar glares at him as Iroh pulls Zuko into an embrace.

“What are you doing with him?” Zuko asks, looking to Iroh.

“It’s time we had a talk,” Iroh says, keeping his hands on Zuko’s shoulders as he stands back, then Iroh looks over his shoulder, “You two go ahead,” he says, talking to Aang and Katara.

Katara follows the avatar, Zuko watches her leave, when she looks back to him, he looks away.

…

Katara’s heart is beating for Zuko, it wants her to go back to him.

As Katara follows Aang through the tunnel she looks over her shoulder one last time.

“Come on,” Aang prompts, “We have to go.”

Katara nods her head and then they take off running, but before they can cross through the underground city, they’re stopped by Azula, she comes from behind them, her fire strikes at them and blocks their exit.

Katara looks to the tunnel Azula came from and she fears for Zuko.

Azula goes to attack, but her attack is blocked by a line of hot fire, Zuko steps into the cavern, his shirt sleeves are ripped off and he stands strong, his fists engulfed in fire, that fire is aimed right at Azula.

Katara smiles, tears almost brim her eyes as Zuko sides with them. But then Katara sees the shift in Zuko’s face, she sees his face harden.

“Don’t,” Katara breathes, her face filling with fear as she sees Zuko makes his decision.

Zuko attacks Aang.

Anime recs!

Animes I’ve (more or less) recently watched and loved:

Yuri on ice; 12 episodes; for the story, the character development, the music

Orange; 13 episodes; the story (#heartbreaking), the drawing and the characters are beautiful

Spirit pact / soul contract; 10 episodes (or 20 if you watch the Chinese version); i like the world of it (ghosts, demons,.) and the “funny” moments/reactions of some characters

Sword art online; 25 episodes, i liked the idea of being in a video game’s world and the drawing are really pretty, most of the characters are developed (in my memory)

Hakuoki; 3 seasons of 10 to 12 episodes each; samurai!!! (I haven’t find the time to watch the third season tbh, but the first two are really great!)

Guilty crown; 22 episodes; I’ve learned that this anime is really controverted as some people, like me, really liked it and some didn’t at all but well it’s up to you! the world the characters evolves in, its development and the one of the characters and their personalities are the things i really liked about this anime!

Alderamin on the sky; again, another anime i really enjoyed and i guess the drawings (the drawings means a lot for me as you may have guessed already XD) and the bunch of characters we follow is the thing i like about this anime

Okay Alderamin on sky, Orange, Yuri on ice, Spirit pact are from 2016 and the others are pretty recent as well but the three that are about to come are from the 1980’s and i absolutely adore them! I rewatched them a lot already in the past years and they mean a lot to me! i wasn’t born in the 1980’s but they were diffused again when i was younger and i just love them so much

The mysterious cities of gold, I. LOVE. THIS. SERIES.SO. MUCH SO SO SO MUCH! (I’m kind of pissed right now because i had written a nearly essay for this but i clicked on something wrong and then poof! gone so I’ll try to make this second draft as good as the first one) in those 39 episodes we follow the adventures of Esteban, Tao and Zia and their friends throughout the New World (it’s during the 16th century so we’re talking about the American continent here) as they are looking for the cities of gold. I cannot tell much because SPOILERS but yeah i love this story!! i know the theme songs, the speech intro that’s before the opening song, the plot of the episodes, EVERYTHING by heart! and I JUST LOVE IT SO SO SO MUCH! It means so much to me and i cannot even put words on this because it’s just my childhood, and moments I’ve spend with people and and I LOVE IT OKAY? everything about this story is just great, the themes, the friendship, the story, the drawings, the feelings, EVERYTHING! maybe my point of view is a little biased but let me tell you that the box set holding the DVDs at home is more damaged than Walt Disney’s one SO YEAH! this is an argument don’t judge me! so i hope this make you want to Watch this because i really want more people to know more about this series. it’s a French one so i don’t know how well the dub version is but please please please please Watch it if you can! AND BY ALL POINT! try to not Watch the sequel they try to made back two or three years ago, because #destructionoftheoriginalfeels #childhoodtornapart the story is good i guess, maybe it’s just my strong feelings for the original 80′s series but this “second season” as they like to call it doesn’t make up to it to me! LAST THING! PICHU IS THE BEST PARROT EVER I WANT HIM IN MY LIFE

Ulysses 31, the odyssey BUT IN SPACE! AND NONO IS THE BEST YOU CAN’T TELL ME OTHERWISE! BEST BUDDY AWARD! I used to Watch it with my bro when we were younger and we were so sad when we miss an episode!

Candy Candy, this one i have no Watch during my childhood but i love it anyway, we follow Candy a Young girl who will get through a lot in her life and will always try to keep her big bright smile! her development, the story, the themes, the characters, everything is so Worth it! (again, another series you want to keep tissues with you. I’m not an easy cry but gosh. this one at some point is just too powerful. you will cry of laughter too though)

The rose of Versailles, I’ve Watch this one last year i think, or maybe already two years ago, times goes by so quickly, and it takes place during the French revolution. We follow a girl who has been raised as a boy by her father as he already had many daughters and he wanted/needed a boy more than anything (that’s why the name of the anime is also Lady Oscar), I can’t tell you a lot about the story except it’s really great, that the characters are amazing and that the end of the anime killed me.

Here it is @randomhiccup24! okay i didn’t think at first that it would turn out so long but i got carried away for my love for these four animes I’ve talked about AND NOW I WANT TO WATCH THEM ALL OVER AGAIN!! whyyyyyy

1. Favourite author from your country? Patricia Reily Giff (Its easy to find American authors so I just chose my all time favorite)

2. Favourite children’s book? (All my favorite books are childrens books soooooo) Lets go with The Watson’s Go to Birmingham 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis

3. A book that changed your life? Easy, Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys (this is the books that got me interested in modern history. )

4. The best book you read this year is…? Ahhh well... I guess its Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson because thats the only books I’ve read this year hahah.

5. The worst book I read this year? Soo, there no way I’m critizing a Morgan Matson book... soooI don’t have one?

6. A book that is overrated to you EVERY PIECE OF CLASSIC LITERATURE I READ IN HIGH SCHOOL ESPECIALLY ANYTHING BY JANE AUSTEN. (The only way I got though Price and Prejudice was by watching the webseries and that was A+ but I definetely didn’t like the books) Yeah... I’m gunna stop here because I don’t like classic literature.

7. Randomly recommend a book The Gallagher Girl series because I don’t like Ally Carter’s other works but this series of Spies + Romance is very good... also 5 Flavors of Dumb because its an indie books and its good.
