My thoughts on the season 1 finale for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai

Warning!!! There will be spoilers so be sure and watch the show up until the end if you haven't already!

I'm super happy with how season 1 wrapped up but it...definitely wasn't what I was expecting, lets just say that... and I have lots of questions, thoughts, and just random tidbits I really liked so I thought I'd pile them all into one big post (I may make a second one if it gets too long I'll see where my brain goes).

First of all:

I love that Henchman #2 (or whatever his number was haha I can't remember) showed up at the end with Gaptooth and thought "oh their going to play a really big part in the finale!" and the he just proceeded to go "f*ck this sh*t I'm out" like that one vine of the guy jumping into the water and I can't even with him 🤣

Claw is a queen, need I say more? I am sad she ended up dying she was my fave (even though I figured she and the others would since that is typical for Gremlins in the movies to all perish by the end). But I can't help but wonder in this scene when she's looking up at Riley and telling her fellow brethren to kill him, if she'll somehow come back in season 2 for revenge? I think it was confirmed by Joe Dante or someone working on the original Gremlins movies that Stripe was essentially "reincarnated" as Mohawk (someone correct me if I'm wrong on this!) so it's definitely possible, Claw might even get reincarnated into Stripe somehow. They gave her such a fun personality I really hope she does return! (same for that one Gremlin that can sing really good I'm curious as to why the creators made her stand out so much).

Also, I'm glad Snout survived! He doesn't seem too pleased to be a mogwai again but I'm glad he's ok, he's so cute! I do think it's interesting he (and another gremlin I'll mention later) made it, I wonder if the creators have plans for him in season 2...

So Riley died??? I put the question marks because yes, he did get turned into a cockroach and cut in half (REALLY rough way to go) but if you go back and watch this scene, do you notice anything strange?

This mogwai he ate back in episode 8 wasn't with the people he consumed with pearl magic. All the gremlins got turned back into mogwai, but I didn't see this little guy anywhere with them. I was WAY too lazy to grab screenshots of all the mogwai at the end, but if you go back and look I swear I didn't see him anywhere. I bring this up for a couple of reasons. The "fourth rule" is that if you eat a mogwai you live forever right? Well, he never spit this guy back out, so shouldn't he still technically be able to live forever, regardless of what happens to him? And this mogwai looks so different than the others, and has a little tuft of fur with a white stripe on his head. Interesting that this is the mogwai he ended up eating... Wishful thinking I suppose, I'd just really love for him to come back. He was such a good villain!

I'm glad Grandpa and Nuwa came back! Sam's Grandpa was such a fun character and Gizmo missing Nuwa was making me sad ;-;

Also I love that the Wing family essentially adopted Elle at the end it was really sweet. And it was nice Gizmo got to stay though after all that happened, I'm genuinely shocked Nuwa would let him?? Like yeah I know the show is a prequel and Sam is the old shopkeeper in the first movie, so naturally they'd have to end up together. But still!

And finally: Yaaaaaay one Gremlin survived! I'm so happy this is essentially the Brain Gremlin from the second movie, he was my favorite character in that one and I'm glad they left him as a cliffhanger for season 2. He's still got a slightly evil side to him but as he explained to Elle, he isn't quite as chaotic as his brothers and sisters are. I wonder what his plans will be for season 2?

While scrolling through your blog you've made me realise why I've watched TDW a good 15 or so times and TR just the once. I didn't like TR and still don't, but couldn't really put my finger on why beyond being more than a little offended Loki couldn't do anything against Strange. Like... can he seriously not magic out of that? The dude is 1000+ years old and therefore should be so much more magically proficient than Strange. The tonal shift between New Thor and Old Thor is beyond jarring. It's rattling.

And in a similar vein Loki's been rattled too. There was a line from the first Thor film that stuck with me. Loki saying "I never wanted the throne." And I've been trying to piece it logically into the various mcu continuity ever since. Because it works fine up until you see him take Odin's place at the end of TDW. He didn't want the throne, he just wanted to sort his head out and process the shitstorm his life became after Jotunheim. And get away from Thanos.

Then Ragnarok happens and other than the costume department doing a lovely nod to Agent of Asgard with the superior helmet design, still not thrilled canon-wise.

But yeah, anyway - what do you think of the "I never wanted the throne" tidbit?

That line is core to Loki’s entire character arc and yet somehow absolutely everyone—Marvel and fans alike—seems to have forgotten he ever said it. I swear to god, if I have to read one more fic that mentions how Loki has wanted to be king his entire life, I am going to shoot myself in the face. But hey, no one in-universe takes anything Loki has to say seriously, so why should his own fans, right?

*cough* ANYWAYS

While I think there’s merit in acknowledging that that scene was haphazardly added at the last minute, I also don’t think him deposing Odin at the end of TDW necessarily contradicts that line. Context matters, so we have to look at what Loki’s alternatives were. He could 

Go back to solitary confinement like Thor had promised

Flee to some random corner of space after specifically being warned by The Other there was no place he could hide to be safe from Thanos, or

Return to live on Asgard but as someone else

None of those options are exactly good. But I think number three is undeniably better than the first two. Loki most likely made the calculation that if there was anywhere he was going to be safe from Thanos, it would be Asgard. And hey, if you’re going to have to live in disguise for the foreseeable future, it may as well be as the most powerful man in the Nine Realms, whom you also rightly deserve to get even with (personally, I would have just killed the asshole, but Loki is clearly a much better person than I am). Whether Loki intended to remain as Odin permanently at this point is unclear to me (as discussed here), but then it doesn’t matter because Thor comes home and abdicates the throne and Loki is kind of stuck whether that had been his intention from the start or not. (Also, can we just talk about how badass Loki has to be to overpower the freaking Allfather only hours after almost dying AND then maintain that illusion for four straight years while also keeping himself hidden from Heimdall? That’s non-stop use of his magic. For four years. No breaks. Can you imagine how exhausting that must have been? Loki is... seriously something else).

Quest Masters!

It has been 24 hours since Chapter 16! How we feelin'?

We are now officially at the halfway point of If You Trust Me!

I still can't believe we've gotten this far...

And I just wanna say thanks to all of you for getting this far with me!

A fanfic without an audience may as well not be a fanfic at all, right? 🤪

Now I have already addressed this a couple times, but I might as well mention it here too...

Since we are now halfway through, I am going to take this time to announce that I will be taking a week-long hiatus from publishing chapters.

Now don't worry I am not going anywhere, I will still be active here on Tumblr!

I just would like to take the next 9 days to regroup and take in what I've accomplished so far and to give all of you the time to catch up and re-read if you need to, because I realize some of you would like to do that 😉

I will admit sometimes this fic feels more like an epic novel than anything else but I wouldn't want it any other way 📖

Because this story is epic and it's only going to get more so...

I am very excited for you all to see how the second half pans out!

But in the meantime, be sure to be on the lookout for posts like feedback advice and random tidbits because I would also like to take this hiatus time to chat generally with you guys about this story if that's alright

Storytelling is a talent that I love and would like to improve on and this story is something I've done to help me with that. In some ways, I've learned so much from writing this more than a 9:00am class could ever teach me (Man, saying that sounds crazy, but it's true!)

I've learned a lot from everything: from the planning, the research, the writing, the editing, and the publishing! It's all great!
