Some of you may know that a few years ago, the visionary #IvovanHove directed a stage version of @alittlelifebook with his company, @itaensemble, in Amsterdam (the adaptation was written by Koen Tachelet). I have only seen this production once, and it was completely stressful: It was opening night, and all the Dutch and Belgian theater critics were sitting in the row in front of me, and kept looking back at me to see how I was reacting at certain moments. But/and I have thought about it countless times since, and how Ivo was able to bring different sensory dimensions to the theatrical experience (smell, for example). Everyone in it is wonderful, but @ramseynasr, as Jude; @hans_kesting, as Brother Luke/Caleb/Dr. Traylor; and @MariekeHeebink, as Ana, are downright astonishing. (Ramsey's is the most physically demanding performance I think I've ever seen an actor give onstage: the play is four hours, and he's on for almost all of it.) I'm happy to say that the play will be livestreamed on October 1 in certain markets (though not any English-language ones) as part of the theater's ITALive series, with subtitles in French or English. #Repost @hanyayanagihara ・・・ One of the things I told director #ivovanhove in our discussions about his interpretation of #alittlelifebook was that I wanted him to use the possibilities of the medium—in this case, the stage—as much as he could, and indeed, my favorite parts of the production were the ones that delivered the particular thrills that only a live performance can. One of Ivo's earliest suggestions, which I'd loved, is that the same actor play Brother Luke, Caleb, and Dr. Traylor. Here's the arresting Hans Keating (@hanszszsz), who moved from character to character with minimal, subtle costume changes, as Caleb and @ramseynasr as Jude.//Also: thank you to everyone for all your kind comments. The play is only being produced in Dutch (some performances are subtitled in English: check website below) and will only be performed in two runs: the first ends Sept 29 and then moves to Antwerp for three additional performances, but these are all sold out. Then it'll run again in mid-April 2019 (again, Amsterdam only, and there are currently no plans for it to move to London or NYC). For more information, go to tga.nl.
