Week 1 (ish)
I've been in Beijing for a week now, and I have already had what feels like a million amazing experiences; most fun, some not so fun. I have made about 30 friends from all over the world, from countries including (but not limited to): China, the United States, Canada, Germany, Holland, Poland, and Mexico (7 of them!). I've eaten all sorts of amazing (and sometimes weird) food, been to a (crazy) nightclub, and learned so much about myself and the world. I am so excited for the rest of the experiences that are coming!
Satuday
I arrived at terminal 2 of the Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA or PEK for short) at 3:05 pm. My 12.5 hour flight from Detroit was actually not bad due to the legroom and recline my Economy Comfort seat afforded, great entertainment options, and the fact that three meals were served. Thanks Delta! After a painless immigration process I gathered my checked bag and was met at the exit by Maria and Yvonne, my tour guides/helpers/handlers/concierges for every issue I may encounter in China. They're awesome! Maria helped me into a taxi, and we took a 20 minute ride to my school, The University of International Business & Economics (UIBE), located in the Chaoyang district of Beijing, just inside the fourth ring road of Beijing. Beijing has 6 (!) ring roads, with the farthest being about 12 miles from the city center! My first impression of Beijing was the smog. The pollution is so bad that I practically couldn't even see the ground until touchdown!
You can barely even see that A380 off in the (not so very distant) distance!
We arrived at the main gate of UIBE, which is called the West Gate. UIBE is completely walled and gated with 24 hour security, which not only provides peace of mind, but looks cool. We walked to the building I will live in, and I checked into my room. I took note of the fact that it was only 4:45 pm by the time I arrived at my school. An hour and forty minutes from airport to inner city is not bad at all!
Sunday
I woke up around 9 AM on Sunday and went for a walk around my campus. Beijing is enormous, and I did not feel comfortable straying far from my building. At 2 pm one of the other students in my program from Boston, Marc, and I met Yvonne in the lobby of our building, and she took us to a supermarket so that we could buy some snacks and learn a little bit about life in Beijing. We purchased some Oreos, chips, etc. (we are very concerned about our health). I purchased "Coca Cola and Chicken" flavored Lay's chips, and they actually tasted like Coca Cola (For better or worse)! No sour cream & onion to be found.
As we were leaving the supermarket, we saw a food vendor selling these things that looked like small apples on a stick, with some sort of glaze. Yvonne didn't know the translation to English, but she assured us that they are delicious, and bought three of them. She was right!
Yummy glazed fruit on a stick.
Chicken and Coke flavored Chips...yuck!
Monday
On Monday I registered for classes, which took a total of about four hours. It was a very difficult process comprised of seven steps; a very foreign concept for a Bostonian student. It worked though, and I'm all registered for my classes. I started Mandarin classes today (3/3), and will have 4 hours of lessons every day (!). In addition, I am taking three business courses called "International Trade and FDI in China," (FDI stands for Foreign Direct Investment) "Marketing in China," and "China's Culture and Society." All sound pretty interesting and I'm looking forward to starting them on Monday, March 10.
Monday my (now roommate) Marc and I met Kevin, a Chinese student at our university, who I was introduced to through the "Beijing Buddy" program. He helped us around the city a bit, and showed us some nice restaurants.
Tuesday
On Tuesday, Kevin took Marc and I out for hot pot, which is basically a restaurant where you have a big cauldron of food in front of you and you choose the broth and ingredients you would like. I enjoyed it a lot!
Wednesday
On Wednesday I explored the city a little bit, and then went to a nightclub with 10 or so friends that I met the day before. We knew someone, so our admission was only 50CNY, or about $8! Not bad!
Thursday
Thursday I met Yvonne and Faiza (the girl from Boston in my program), and we went to Tinanmen Square. What a day! It rained Wednesday night, which completely washed away the pollution. The sky looked like a postcard!
I'm sorry that I took so long to update this blog; I've been so busy meeting new people and experiencing things that I hardly have any time to sit down and write. In the future I am going to try to write a little bit and share a few pictures every couple of days, rather than writing one enormous post for each week. I didn't really do much this weekend, other than hang out with lots of new friends and eat all sorts of food.
Stay tuned!
