Raleigh Nepal Expedition 18c (feb-apr 2018)
To know more about the expedition program go to Raleigh site . This blog will just give you the overview about the expedition experience from the volunteer pointâs of view.
Some general FAQ regarding this expedition.
_ 10 weeks or 7 weeks.
_ 3 PhasesÂ
_ 1st phase (community phase) -19 days
_ 2nd phase (trek phase) -19 days
_ 3rd phase (community phase) - 19 days
_ WASH PROGRAM.
_ I was in 10 weeks program so at first i was called in the country office where there were all the volunteerâs including the volunteer manager for expedition programâs to kick off.
_ All the volunteerâs after the gathering which includes both the host and intâl volunteer was moved on the training site at Dhading (RIMS BAIRENI ).
_ At RIMS, we spend around 3 nights and 4 days where there were lotâs of info session held regarding the expedition program, placed where we were about to spend the upcoming days in community, what sort of work we were going to do, Olympics ( Raleigh Olympics ), energizer, cultural show, fun activities, info regarding health and safety measures (CASEVAC and MEDIVAC). And, yeah all the volunteerâs group were divided in the name of NE1, NE2, NE3, NE4.

_ I wonât be writing about the community phase and trek phase because itâs better not to know about the this experience with otherâs point of view. Personally, it was great experience on both the community phase and trek phase. But wait, i will write what sort of things we did on community phase.
COMMUNITY PHASEÂ
_Generally, there are around three section where you can get involved in the community phase which are as follows:
 Community Awareness
 Community Development
 Infrastructure  Â
But, you can have all the part covered as per your wish and mutual interest and understanding in the team . You can guess what sort of work is to be done by the section names.
_ VMâs lead the first 1-2 days followed by the leaders chosen among the volunteers . Here, you are exposed to the leading the group on your own with your co-leader. You tend to receive the support from the VMâs as per you need.
Note: VM ( volunteer manager )
_Some work regarding WASH includes: baseline survey, digging pit for toilet, digging trenches for transmission line, digging trenches for distribution line, building hand washing stations, lotâs of social awareness programs related to the hand washing session, personal hygiene , menstrual hygiene, forming and helping the locals to form the groups of youth, women, carry out the session with locals and so on .
_Dry program ( No consumption of alcohol or drugs )
_ Smoking cigarette is acceptable under certain termâs and condition.
TREK PHASE
_This is what you are here donât lie.
_When you finishes the first phase in community you are then bring to training site (RIMS) again as a part of changeover phase where you spend 2 days and also you are given info regarding trekking , info about building tents , tips about carrying bag pack, you need to carry around on average of 15 kg of load on your back. If you are more generous and helpful in nature you might carry additional loads to from your trek mate or group kit. Distribution of group kit is done accordance to the mutual understanding between the groupâs member.
_Formation of new group is done again in this phase where you might have some familiar face from the community phase with some additional people known as trek guide.Â
_In this phase ,VM leads for first 1-2 days and after that volunteer is given a chance to lead the group singly as a daily leader who leads for a day. It is he/she who decide when to start the day and decide the task relating taking rest, energizer. Apart from that it the responsible of the volunteer to decide about what to cook, fill out the Jerry can for drinking water purpose, washing all the group kit and so on.
_ You will be camping around the villages field, school grounds, church grounds, some forest areas during the trek.Â
SOME EXPERIENCE REGARDING TREK
