Attract Mode Issue 4 (November 2024)
Welcome to this issue of Attract Mode! We’re here to highlight some old, new and upcoming lesser known, mostly indie, “solo” developer and hobbyist games that I’ve come across. This month’s selection is three games doing very different things from each other – I hope you find something of interest in this entry!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Next Level Adventure (Free) Extremely silly and charming, A Next Level Adventure makes use of really simple bump combat and an ever ironclad rule that you can only defeat things if you are a higher level that them to create a really fun idea (and joke) that extends all throughout the game. Become the strongest in all of Numbland!
Attraction: Takes its core idea and runs with it all the way up until its conclusion. Excellently short and I had a great time with it, complete with a big ol’ smile on my face throughout the post-game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rainchaser (Demo) In a muted world of decaying machines and perpetual rain, seven witches have stolen the Crimson Star. Sent on a mission to recover this powerful magic artifact, take flight as Alice with your ancient ship through the city while your wonderfully snarky operator guides you to your goal. Quite a solid shoot ‘em up conveyed through its promising demo. Fun stage design and great music to accompany, an intriguing world & characters!
Attraction: Initially found this through ZeroRanger and while the game sports similarities through its attractive stage design and limited palette, Rainchaser has its own thing going on that draws out a different, if just as fun, kind of enjoyment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Man I Just Wanna Go Home Stranded in an unfamiliar part of the city, with a rumoured murderer on the loose, you play as a delivery person trying to find his way back home during torrential rain. Man I Just Wanna Go Home is a self-described “MS Paint-noir” visual novel featuring all the beats you expect from it: multiple unique endings, gripping characters, killer music, and many choices to make as you puzzle your way through the narrative to get home!
Attraction: I mean...just look at it! Its immediately arresting and eye catching visually (especially in motion) and I do very much enjoy noir visual novels/adventure games.

more clangen brainrot,,
two more of my favs are warrior turned healer tadpolecurl & his dead bf rainchaser (who’s the son of halfstar, btw)(they’re older than in the pics now lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
rain died while saving tadpole from a fire, and ever since his death, he’s been ‘haunting’/visiting tadpole as a ghost. tadpole can see and talk to other ghosts too, and it fucked with him for moons bc lost starclan/dsrk forest/ghost cats kept talking to and following him when realising he understands them in hopes of getting help finding sc/df/their final resting place (again). a few moons after rain’s death (who he only got together with after he became a ghost—bc neither were bold enough to confess earlier. rain deliberately wanders the earth to be with his mate, instead of going to starclan), about half a year, he decides on becoming a healer instead bc sc cats are talking to him all the time anyway and while he’s a great fighter, he’s not sure if battle really is where his heart lays.
so, tadpole’s a healer now. he’s happier, too. the ghosts visiting him are less of a chore now that he’s visiting sc every moon anyway—they’ve always been a routine, but they’re more pleasant now! plus, while he’s figured how to guide lost ghosts back to where they came from as just an app anyway, it’s easier for him now, and he feels less guilty for basically invading sc.
he’s my lore-heaviest cat atm 😭 but i’m slowly trying to make up more lore & plots, and it’s getting better so!!
anyways i love tadpole and his ghost bf rain. i think tadpole will eventually start being against sc (probs bc smth happens to rain, whatever that is. he won’t die-die but maybe they punish him idk. or a fucked up prophecy??) bc i love him and drama is fun <3

Rainchaser ‘’Secret Horizon’’ - meet me halfway (between ambient and piano)
We love getting all these wonderful submissions, not only because we get to listen to so much great new music, but also because it shows that there is absolutely no geographical restraints as to where good ambient is made.
Take this new release by Rainchaser from South Africa, for example. Soothing as the night sky itself, the artists takes equally from ambient and neoclassical by combining a relaxing piano melody on top of light and non-demanding ambient drones, along with some essential nature sounds. ‘’Secret Horizon’’ is also careful not to bore you and before too long elaborates on the lead melody, as if shifting focus from the south-east chunk of sky to north-west, then returning again.
Deep, calming and well produced, ‘’Secret Horizon’’ will speak to an ear of any ambienteur out there. Knock yourself out at the link below:

River Mint - Cumbria
River Mint – Cumbria
The rain has hit many parts of the UK and the rivers in some areas have been huge, just not anywhere near Unsponsored UK. This reminded me of one of my last flood level trips early last year. On the 25th February 2017 Team Unsponsored ran the Mint in Cumbria (UK). The end of that week had seen storm Dorris hit the UK with high winds and significant amounts of rain for majority of the North. This…

A reply;
[[ @dawnmourn sorry for the brief delay! ]]
Lightward Rainchaser,
Most knowledge is worth hearing. Knowledge that may well save one’s life, more so. The presentation was riveting, but certainly something that would have raised several questions among elves.
It is one matter to be protected from disease- even without taking into account the plague of undeath, it speaks volumes of the strength and reach of the magics that aided you in reaching such a point- but another to be able to ward off magical corruption that lacks a biological tether. One recalls you mentioning an effect even on fel; it could prove to be interesting as a shield, or preventive measure, in the field if so.
Even if it is too costly to use that way, as a magic user, one would ask if you have noticed any diminishing ability to use magic in those you have cleansed. Arcane may not be the most dreadful form of corruption, but it can warp living beings all the same.
As an aside... Quel’thalas once used runestones, albeit as a shield instead of a means to safely drain corrupting magic or disease. As part of the Highborne heritage of sin’dorei, trained magi were able to manipulate the stones and their connection to the leylines. Once, perhaps, it may have been druids, but that particular type of spellcasting was mostly lost long ago. Several cultures seem to share channeling methods, even if they differ in their magical traditions or training.
One digresses. The last questions this one would pose are regarding how the elements are channeled. One does not know much of calling upon the elements, but of what one has felt, there is a marked difference between whirlwinds against foes and breeze to lead one on... therefore, is it any particular rune used? Or does it rely primarily on the blessing of a determined wild deity or elemental aspect?
Many thanks for your reply,
Dawnward C.

Earthmother’s Tears: Part 3
Tumblr media
There it was, the Dead Scar. A graveyard spanning the length of Quel’thalas. Onatah looked out into the field of bones; only just beginning to experience its effects firsthand. Such powerful dark energy, such corruption, radiated from the ground itself. Even the air was tainted; the sickening stench of death and decay lingered, even though the battles had long passed. It was awful; it was perfect.
“No better place to begin.” Onatah mumbled to herself.
The Druid slipped from the saddle of her Grove Warden and onto the blackened earth, wincing as she landed. With a snort, the great beast left, turning tail as soon as he was relieved of his rider; in truth Onatah wished to do the same, but it was her duty to finish what she set out to do.
With careful hands guiding her gnarled staff, she traced a circle in the dirt, wide enough for her to work comfortably, though small enough for her to effectively cleanse it of the corruption it bore. From her bag she produced a number of materials needed for such a ritual; salt from the sea, a tightly bound bundle of sage, the feather of a stormcrow, and a skein of blessed water.
Once the sage was lit and allowed to smolder, Onatah took up the feather as well and began her chant,
“Hail the East, and the element of Air! I call you forth to guard and protect this circle. May your winds carry blessings of intelligence and creativity. Hail and welcome!”
Smoke poured from the burning bundle, and as she spoke Onatah traced the circle with it, imbuing it with the elements blessings.
Turning slightly and brandishing the feather the Druid spoke,
“Hail the South, and the element of Fire! I call you forth to guard and protect this circle. May your flames burn away the old and bring forth new life. Hail and welcome!”
The circle was traced, and Onatah took up the water and salt.
“Hail the West, and the element of Water! I call you forth to guard and protect this circle. May your rains bring life to this earth; and nourish those that will come. Hail and welcome!”
Water splashed onto the ground with a hiss and flash of light; the corruption ran deep, and had sunk its roots farther than the Druid imagined. It was no surprise however that it wouldn't be cleansed without a fight. There was one more element to call forth, one more blessing that must be given before she was done.
Her voice echoed through the valley,
“Hail the North, and the element of Earth! I call you forth to guard and protect this circle. May this soil be cleansed and given new life! Hail and welcome!”
The ground beneath Onatah’s hooves trembled as salt was scattered; groaning in protest. Steadying herself with her staff, the Druid held her ground. Though it became difficult to remain centered on the quaking earth, she roared her final prayer,
“We are born of the Earthmother, and to Her we shall return; As my ancestors worshipped Her,
Air, land, and sea.
Hoof and horn, hoof and horn,
All that dies shall be reborn!
Corn and grain, corn and grain,
All that falls shall rise again!”
It was done. Onatah fell to her knees; exhausted by the cleansing ritual. Though the soil beneath her felt, different, perhaps -alive-. The air crackled around her with potent energy, and the soil hummed with new life. Smiling softly to herself, the Druid rose from the ground slowly, allowing her staff to bear her weight for now. Her work for today was done; but she has barely even started.
*Calling the elements and the Earthmother’s prayer are based off a hodgepodge of pagan prayers with a bit of flavor for this piece*
