AroAce Database
Just wanted to share this resource in case anyone hasn’t heard of it. Website created by author Claudie Arsenault that has a huge collection of books with characters on the aromantic and/or asexual spectrum. Should be noted that the list is not in alphabetical order - it used to be, but the website is being updated and so things are working differently https://www.aroacedatabase.com/

rainbowsparkle-cake submitted: Romance-free Detective Books
Enjoyed these two books by Richard Hull, and realized that they were both romance-free.
“Excellent Intentions” (1938) and “The Murder of my Aunt” (1934). Both are written with a dry sense of humor and play with the conventions of the genre.

Is it going to be a requirement from now on to have a tumblr account to submit something or ask a question?
Hello, there! I’m afraid it’ll have to be since it looks like Tumblr no longer allows asks and submissions from people without an account.
As for our Twitter (I refuse to call it that other name) account, we don’t consider it to be a safe or useful space anymore, that’s why we’re limiting our interactions there and only keeping it as a way to communicate with you in case Tumblr crashes or something of the sort, but we prefer not to be in there.
We apologize for the inconvenience, if we find any other way to fix this, we’ll let you know.
Thank you!
— Caro

“Someday I Suppose” by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Feels like singer keeps getting involved in romantic relationship just because ‘he’s supposed to,’ and realizes by the end that it’s just not something he wants
I sort of think I'm better off just leaving it unsorted The more I try to change its course The more off course it goes

This commercial appealed to my very aro heart - parodies dating shows like The Bachelor by having the actress ignore the men she’s supposed to fall for and just gets a pet dog instead

“From a Buick 8” by Stephen King. Romance-free.
The Buick has been in the abandoned police warehouse for years. No one knows who the owner is, nor what happened to him. All they know is that the thing in the shed may look like a Buick, but that’s the one thing it most certainly is not.
Great themes of realizing that some mysteries just aren’t meant to be solved, and just because somethings unknown it is not the enemy.
Trigger warning for gore. It should also be noted that something especially disturbing happens after Shirley chases the police dog into the warehouse; made me not like most of the main characters anymore.

“Unlock my Boss” (2022-2023) tv show
Not going to lie, I avoided this show for a while because the title seemed dumb, and the plot easily guessable from the title.
However, after actually watching the series, it is now one of my favorite dramas. The general plot is about a young man (Park In-seong) who finds some evidence - though unfortunately not enough to just show to the police - that a businessman (Kim Seon-joo) has been kidnapped and possibly murdered. He manages to get a position high enough in Seon-joo’s company in order to find out what really happened. In the process he teams up with Seon-joo’s secretary Jung Se-yeo, and they spend the series finding out what is really going on in this tech company, why Mr. Kim was abducted, and if he is even alive.
Really good series that has some great friendships, terrible villains that you really want to get taken down, and a surprisingly insightful analysis of what makes a ‘person.’
Though the advertised plot point regarding the phone might seem a bit off putting, it ties in nicely to the theme that ““Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”
It should be noted that there is a romance between Park In-seong and Jung Se-yeo, but it only makes up a very tiny portion of the show (maybe less than ten minutes altogether of a 12 episode show, each episode around an hour long). While they do like each other, they have their priorities straight and spend pretty much all of their time uncovering the conspiracy of what happened to Mr. Kim.
There is also a nice subversion of the 'love at first sight’ cliche, where Park In-seong specifically says later that when he met Jung Se-yeo he could tell she was a good person, with no mention of love.

“Housebound” (2014)
Thriller/horror film for Halloween! Romance-free. Does a good job of subverting expectations, in that the character who traditionally would be written as the bad guy is actually just a somewhat creepy person but with good intentions.

“The Courier” (2019)
A decent romance-free action film. Definitely a B-movie, but still a fun watch. Several tropes are played with, and the Courier (her name is never given) and Nick develop a realistic platonic bond by the end.

rainbowsparkle-cake submitted: Song
“Carry Me” by Olivia Millerschin
Absolutely love this song! Heard it at the end of a film where the main character has to say goodbye to his best friend, and this music was just perfect to play over the movie outro.
https://youtu.be/QmexHwu9yG0?si=ZVE1-SiRFBdu1wn5
P.S. the movie is not romance free so not suggesting it to this tumblr list, but if you’re curious most of the comments to this song mention the film name
Oh I wish the wind would just carry me home, because I don't belong here no.

“Burning Bright” (2010)
Thriller/survival film where two siblings whose abusive stepfather is trying to set up a safari park must hide from a tiger on the loose during a hurricane.
Surprisingly good despite the slightly out-there premise, and with an unexpected ending.
Romance free.
Spoilers: the movie goes a different route and ultimately portrays the stepfather as being the real enemy and the tigers danger being a result of, among other things, him keeping the tiger from food for several days if not weeks.
The real tigers they used to film this were fine and their scenes were filmed when the set was empty so no one was in any danger. The tiger character we see in the film ultimately only attacks the person who kept her in a tiny cage and starved her. You could even argue that she went after the two main characters due to a combination of being starved and the main two smelling like the abusive stepfather due to living in the same house, as she turns her attention to him when he shows up.

rainbowsparkle-cake submitted: Aro Movies Monday
“Mine” (2021)
While this show at first seems like it will be relying on romance tropes for the first few episodes, it is slowly revealed over the course of the series that this is actually a deconstruction of romance soaps/dramadies.
Huge Spoilers Ahead:
What seems to be a love triangle at the beginning (the mistress Kang Ja-kyung and wife Seo Hi-soo of one of the male leads Han Ji-yong meet) develops into a really interesting dynamic by the end. Their interactions cause the husband’s mask to drop, revealing himself to be an unfit spouse and father. While at first the wife and mistress do not like each other, they are both worried about the child and attempt to gain custody. While the women do not necessarily become friends by the end, they grow to trust each other and realize that they both care for the child just as much. In the end, the women get away and decide to platonically co-parent their son together.
In addition, there are lots of other very interesting relationship dynamics. There is a very touching bond between Jung Seo-hyun and Seo Hi-soo who grow to consider each other like sisters, as well as the bond between Jung Seo-hyun and Han Soo-hyu, who slowly start to consider each other as family. There is also the business relationship between Jung Seo-hyun and Han Jin-ho, who have what can be considered a ‘marriage of convenience.’ While technically married, they are not in love, do not sleep together, and are okay with each other sleeping with and/or seeing other people.
Even the romantic subplots are played with differently. For example, one couple has a great scene where one basically tells the other “Look, I love you, but actually being with you won’t make either of us happy. Our lives, backgrounds, and goals are too different - we would eventually make each other miserable.”
An aro-friendly tv show

"The Heiress" (1949)
Nice drama where the main character, Catherine, becomes aware of all the toxic people in her life and slowly becomes her own person. In the beginning she is very close to her father, who she eventually realizes is emotionally abusive and cuts ties with him. She then believes she must turn to her suitor Morris, because he is the only one who has told her he loves her. However, it turns out he is a gold digger. By the films end, Catherine has become a strong, independent woman who has found her own happiness without relying on anyone else. This film is not romance free, but it is rare for films of this time period to end with the main character being single and happy with it, and it is nice to see here.
