“Home is where the hive is”
Pascal parked his car near the gates of a small cottage home just outside of town. His dark red Volkswagen Polo stood out amongst the overgrown grass, trees, bushes, wildflowers, and the wooden gate with streaks of white paint still holding onto it for dear life. The cottage itself looked old, at least seventy years old, Pascal estimated. The cabin's exterior walls were so rotten that Pascal wondered how they hadn’t collapsed yet under the weight of the cracked roof tiles. The whole place looked like something right out of a dark folklore tale, including the looming grey clouds that hung above it. It suited Raina’s reaction when he told her who he was assigned to on his first day.
“Mrs Deinard?” she repeated with a raised eyebrow.
“Yeah. Is that… Is that bad?” Pascal asked with a look of growing worry.
“Not necessarily. She’s a newer client, but the last two nurses that took care of her requested to have a different client not too long after starting with her.”
“Do you know why?”
“Something to do with the environment they had to work in. Badly kept house, mould, lots of bees.”
Pascal frowned. “Bees?”
Raina nodded. “Bees. She’s a beekeeper. Or used to be. The bees stuck around, I guess.”
