Rain Szeto's "Idle Moments Too."
A selection of works from artist Rain Szeto's almost entirely sold exhibition, "Idle Moments Too," which is currently on view at Giant Robot in Los Angeles, California until April 26th, 2023.
Intricate, exceptional, mind-bending, immaculate, extraordinary - All words that come to mind when viewing San Francisco-based artist Rain Szeto's complex and beautiful ink and watercolor dreamworlds. Through her illustrations, Szeto endeavors to evoke feelings of nostalgia and a "quiet celebration of life." She also hopes that her work brings happiness to others.
In addition to her work available with Giant Robot, Rain also has an astonishing painting, "This Way Up," available to own with Supersonic Art.

From the museum about the exhibition and Giant Robot–
Giant Robot launched in 1994 as a hand-assembled zine in Los Angeles and grew into a staple of Asian American alternative pop culture. Since 2007, JANM has partnered with Eric Nakamura, founder of Giant Robot, to produce the biennale that is dedicated to showcasing the diverse and creative works brought together by the Giant Robot ethos.
This year marks Giant Robot’s thirtieth anniversary. While the zine and magazine are no longer published, its legacy and influence are indelible parts of our culture. The shop and gallery continue to thrive in Sawtelle’s Japantown and reflect the independent spirit of its origins. Giant Robot continues to be a highly influential brand encompassing many aspects of Asian and Asian American popular culture. These galleries contain a cross section of Giant Robot’s stalwart artists, emerging talents, and friends.
The video below from PBS Artbound is a great documentary about the Giant Robot project.

This exhibition closes Sunday, 1/5/25. On the same day the museum is free and hosting the 2025 Oshogatsu Family Festival- Year of the Snake event which will include cultural performances, crafts and other activities.

Giant Robot Biennale 5 Now Open
Giant Robot Biennale 5 is now open at JANM in Little Tokyo.
— photos and story by Christine N. Ziemba
Move over Frieze. The fifth edition of the Giant Robot Biennale opened on Friday night (March 1) at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) in L.A.'s Little Tokyo.
The art exhibition, which has recurred since 2007, was once again organized by JANM and Eric Nakamura, founder of Giant Robot — the former magazine and now shop and gallery on Sawtelle Boulevard.
Channeling the Giant Robot ethos, the Biennale highlights an array of Asian and Asian American alternative pop art and culture works, taking inspiration from skateboard culture, comic books, graphic design, and vinyl toy culture.
The opening night featured hundreds of guests waiting in winding lines — JANM is a smaller museum — to see works by artists Sean Chao, Felicia Chiao, Luke Chueh, Giorgiko, James Jean, Taylor Lee, Mike Shinoda, Rain Szeto, and Yoskay Yamamoto and others.
The exhibition spreads across three rooms, with eye-catching works stretching end-to-end. Here are a few of our favorites.

This painting Far from Home 2 is an homage to artist Giorgiko's grandmother who spent the last two years of high school living in a Jewish American family’s home in Minnesota, earning her keep because her own family couldn't be kept together. | Photo: Christine N. Ziemba
