The turning point in the first category above is around 1600.
Before then, there were relatively few words for a traveller’s lodging, and they form a close-knit etymological community.
The later decades of the 16th century saw a great increase in travel from England to the continent of Europe, during periods of relative peace. Some of it was motivated by the need to avoid religious persecution in England. Some was for cultural reasons.
Travelling theatre companies brought their plays abroad, and the wealthy made cultural visits, especially to France and Italy – forerunners of the ‘Grand Tour’ which would become a major part of the European social scene during and after the late 17th century.
By the 20th century, with travel becoming so much easier, we see words coming from further afield, as English becomes established as a global language

{18Trip} <PROLOGUE SIDE-A: Still blank> 000-A03 Hospitality Beginnings SIDE:B
Tumblr media
A translation of 18TRIP's PROLOGUE SIDE-A by 82mitsu. ENG proofreading by sasaranurude.
TL note:
Yamanote Line is a railway line from JR East in Tokyo. Connecting various stations and city centers with each other. Considered to be one of the busiest lines.
Kaede: Phew… somehow got it solved.
Liguang: Making me of all people clean up your mess… How unpleasant.
Renga: It’s not like I asked or anything!
Kaede: (One way or another, Liguang-san lent us a hand after I asked him to… even if it’s just by coincidence, it was a huge help to have both Ward Mayors here.)
Kaede: Um, thank you very much for your help!
Liguang: Hmph… a waste of my time.
Renga: And my wasted time is more valuable than yours!
Renga: Crap, wait Liguang! Don’t you walk in front of m—
Kaede: Please wait!
Renga: Geez! Still bothering me or what!?
Kaede: I keep trying to say, that suitcase is…!
Renga: What’s wrong with my suitcase… Ah? Why do you have the same…?
Kaede: I believe that one is actually mine.
Renga: Ah…! You’re right, my precious Woof Woof Paradise charm isn’t on it…!
Renga: D-damn you! Spit it out sooner if that was the case! Don’t you dare think commoners are worthy of owning the same stuff as me!
Kaede: (Again with the commoner thing…)
Kaede: Haaah… and he’s gone. Well, I got my luggage back so it’s fine.
Kaede: (Apart from what’s inside, this suitcase is a purchase in itself, so no way I’d want to lose it.)
Announcer <(It’s almost time for the last bus towards HAMA to depart. Please make your way to the bus terminal, platform number 11 as soon as possible.)
Kaede: Oh no… gotta hurry!
Tumblr media
Kaede: Haaah~ ….Made it just in time.
Announcer <(The bus will be departing. Please fasten your seatbelt attached next to your seat.)
Kaede: (That being said…)
Kaede: (The bus is pretty empty. I guess it’s because it’s the last one, but… In the past it used to be chock full of people.)
???: Oh? If it ain’t Hamasaki.
Kaede: Eh… Daniel-san!?
Tumblr media
Daniel: Yo, hope all went well for you.
Kaede: Same goes to you. Looks like we caught the same bus, huh.
Daniel: ‘Cuz there’s only one to HAMA every four hours. Been waiting for such a long time, got me more tired than that flight.
Kaede: Yeah… missing it does end up being quite the hassle. And yet the Tokyo one is on par with the Yamanote Line…
Daniel: Well, ain’t like much can be done about it. HAMA’s recession becomes clear as day once you catch a glimpse of our current situation.
Daniel: Want one too? A can of beer. Let’s have a toast to being jobless comrades in arms.
Kaede: Already claiming to be jobless… that’s for next week, technically speaking.
Kaede: (—Daniel-san and I are tour conductors working at the same travel agency… or rather, were—it’s a shame, but the business declared bankruptcy.)
Daniel: Just as a last celebration for wrapping up the work day, y’know.
Kaede: (That’s right… Today Daniel-san and I wrapped up the last of our work for tour guiding and headed right back home.)
Kaede: Daniel-san… What are you planning to do next, now that the company isn’t around anymore?
Daniel: Stuff just got done and over with and you’re already bringing that up…
Kaede: I already said it’s not over just yet.
Daniel: Hahaha! Naw, I’ll be taking it nice and easy here.
Daniel: Does that mean you already got something in mind, Hamasaki?
Kaede: I…
Kaede: (Being a tour conductor was a pretty fun job. Of course I love traveling too, besides….)
Tumblr media
Kaede: (Earlier, it felt a bit different compared to the hospitality usually given to tourists at work… I was also happy to think I might’ve done something to help HAMA.)
Kaede: (....I want to continue doing travel work no matter what. But, even when I was working overseas, I could always feel a tiny bit of regret somewhere within my heart.)
Kaede: (....What kind of travel work I genuinely want to do—it's something I can’t help but wonder about.)
Tumblr media
Daniel: Oi, what’s wrong? You’re looking lost in thought there.
Kaede: Oh, no... just thinking nice and easy.
Daniel: Haha! Nice nice, taking it nice an easy is the way to go.
Kaede: Nah, compared to you I’m actually giving it some proper thought.
Daniel: Right, right. Well… the end of one trip is the start of another, as they say.
Kaede: True… that’s how it is. Would be nice if it turns out like that.
Daniel: Also~ If you keep working seriously until the bankruptcy goes in next week, I can take it easy all the way.
Kaede: …I’ll have you know I’m on paid leave tomorrow.
Daniel: Eeeeh~? C’mon, let’s work together now~
Kaede: Please do your best out there.
Kaede: (Since tomorrow is when I’ll be going to see Kafka.)
Kaede: (And after that, I’ll look for a new job…. I’m sure there’ll be some new meetings along the way too. This time, I’m going to find the kind of travel work I want to do from the bottom of my heart. Just thinking about it like this has me excited.)
Kaede: (Can’t wait to see what kind of people I’ll run into on my next trip!)

Milestone Monday
On this day, October 7 in 1849, American writer, poet, and humorist James Whitcomb Riley (1849–1916) was born in Greenfield, Indiana. Know as the "Hoosier Poet," Riley helped to establish a Midwestern literary identity.
To commemorate this milestone, we present some pages from Nye and Riley's Railway Guide, which Riley wrote with fellow Midwestern humorist Edgar W. Nye (1850-1896), published in Chicago by the Dearborn Publishing Company in 1888. In 1885, Riley and Nye formed a partnership and began touring the country to give joint presentations. This book, produced during their touring days, is a collection of humorous anecdotes and poems intended to parody popular tourist literature of the day, and was successful enough to go through at least three reprints.
Most of the illustrations shown here are by American cartoonist Walt McDougall (1858-1938), but the book includes illustrations by several other artists, including Baron de Grimm and Eugene Zimmerman.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On February 1st 1865 the Highland Railway was formed from the amalgamation of Inverness and Perth Junction and the Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railways.
Back in the day every region had it’s own local railway company covering the different areas around the country. The Highland Railway ran from Perth in Central Scotland north to Inverness and then on up the east coast to Wick and Thurso. From Dingwall, the railway ran west to Kyle of Lochalsh to serve Skye and the Western Isles. From Inverness, another line ran east to Keith, where it connected with the line to Aberdeen. Several branches were built from this core network to serve nearby towns.
This is a longer post than I normally put together but hope you get an idea of how all these wee companies ran, and ended up becoming the one company, before of course the bigger companies ate them all up. Some of the stations are now gone, but others mentioned, like Kingussie, Nairn, Keith and Dunkeld survive to this day, and I often pass through them on my travels north. It also gives us an insight intothe infamous Beeching cuts in the 60’s which butchered the rail network, if Beeching had his way there would be no railways beyond Inverness!!
Inverness was always the centre of the Highland Railway. It was the company’s headquarters and principle station. All trains led to Inverness.
The original proposals to construct railways to Inverness were made in the mid-1840s. Rival routes were proposed from Perth and Aberdeen . The Perth & Inverness Railway was considered too hilly for the locomotives of the day, but the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) from Aberdeen was authorised. The GNSR struggled to raise capital in the post-railway mania period and eventually started construction as far as Huntly in 1852, opening that line in 1854.
The people of Inverness then stepped in and started building their own line from the Inverness end, initially as far as Nairn, the Inverness & Nairn Railway (I&N) was opened on 6th. November 1855 but by then plans were being made to extend this railway to meet the GNSR. After some discussion, the Inverness & Aberdeen Junction Railway (I&AJ) was promoted to build the line from Nairn to Keith where it met the GNSR extension from Huntly. The I&AJ was completed on 18th. August 1858,when it took over the working of the I&N.
The people of Inverness were never satisfied with the long journey round via Aberdeen , especially as the GNSR’s station was half a mile from that of the line from the south and connections were not always maintained. Thus was born the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway (I&PJR) which ran from Forres via Grantown, Kingussie and Drumochter summit to Dunkeld where it met with end on with the Perth and Dunkeld Railway which had opened in 1856. The I&P was authorised in 1861 and opened just two years later, being worked from the outset by the I&AJR. The two companies amalgamated on 1st. February 1865 to form the Highland Railway.
Meanwhile construction northwards from Inverness had already started, with a line to Dingwall (1862), Invergordon (1863), Bonar Bridge (1864), Golspie (1868), Helmsdale (1871) and Wick and Thurso (1874). Westward from Dingwall, the Dingwall & Skye Railway was opened to Strome Ferry in 1870.
In the 1890s, two additions were made to the main network. The direct line from Aviemore over Slochd to Inverness was completed in 1898, a year after the Skye line was extended to the present terminus at Kyle of Lochalsh. Several branches were opened from these main lines over the next 40 years, taking the final length of the system to some 242 route miles.Tourist traffic has always been a major source of income for the railways in the Highlands . The Highland Railway developed its own hotels at Inverness , Dornoch and Strathpeffer. It offered combined tours in conjunction with the steamer services of David MacBrayne. Each August it had to contend with the annual migration north for the ‘glorious twelfth.’
The railway played a major part in the First World War, when the Grand Fleet was stationed at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands . Worn down, like many other railways in the country, it became part of the London , Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923. The LMS continued to develop the lines, introducing dining cars and speeding up services. The Second World War again imposed a considerable strain on the lines.
On the nationalisation of the railways, the Scottish Region of British Railways took over. Soon the development of road transport made a significant impact on the use of the railway. The closure of branch lines, which had started in the 1930s, continued. The Beeching Plan of 1963 envisaged the closure of all lines north of Inverness , but this was not approved because those lines still provided a lifeline in winter. The old route from Aviemore to Forres and a number of intermediate stations on the main lines, were closed. Otherwise the main system remained intact, as it does today. Currently operated by ScotRail, the lines continue to provide a vital link to locals and bring many tourists to the area.
The Highland Railway was well known for its locomotives. Working the steep gradients of the main line, in particular, was always a challenge. Add strong winds and snow and the problems became even worse. The railway introduced the first 4-6-0s to the British Isles, commemorated in the preserved No.103 at the Glasgow Transport Museum . In the 1930s, the LMS Black 5s, locally always called “Hikers”, immediately proved their worth. The isolated nature of the country led British Railways to implement complete dieselisation early in the modernisation plan.
Today class 158 and 170 diesel multiple units work most of the trains, but you can still retire to bed in a sleeper on the line out of London Euston and wake up to the sound of a Class 67 struggling up Drumochter.

StEx in real life Part 2: Coaches
As per the last StEx irl post, these do not match up perfectly. They're simply the closest I can find to what we see in the show despite the frequent inconsistencies/lack of information, with a few of my own headcanons sprinkled in.
Pearl: Pennsylvania Railroad balcony observation car
Tumblr media
This is such a perfect match. Pearl doesn't always have a confirmed origin company, but on her Vegas/Tour outfit she wears the Pennsylvania Railroad logo on her belt. She's likely an open observation car due to the railing on her neckline, which fits the bill for this coach.
Dinah: American dining car
Tumblr media
The coach in the photo is a Wabash car, but really any dining car from an American passenger service would fit Dinah (I picked this one for the colour). In English-speaking productions she's typically portrayed with a Southern accent, but this doesn't automatically dictate which company built her as accents can change over time.
Buffy: LNER buffet car
Tumblr media
Buffet cars are an increasing rarity (at least here in Britain), with most being replaced but buffet trolleys instead. But dedicated buffet cars certainly used to be a thing, and I think this one fits Buffy very well. I imagine she was sold off to America, and acquired her New York accent there.
Ashley: Four-wheeled 1st class smoking car
Tumblr media
Ashley to me has always screamed "vintage" in her design, she looks like she's made of polished wood and she's likely the oldest of the coaches still in service. She's also 1st Class (based on her placement in the train), so this particular coach fits her perfectly. I imagine she's been modified and had a gangway connection fitted though, to couple up with the more modern coaches.
Memphis Belle: Pullman sleeping car
Tumblr media
This one is just outright fact, as Memphis Belle explicitly tells us both her class and her manufacturer. Which company she worked in service for is another matter, but in one version of her lyrics she claims to have been bought by Cornelius Vanderbilt, who owned a lot of railways.
Brandi: 1st class parlour car
Tumblr media
Whilst to my knowledge "bar car" is not a dedicated coach class, Belle/Brandi nicely fits a lounge car; she has a posh, elegant design, and lounge cars are often fitted with bars. She's also first class, as indicated by her train placement, which matches her stylish design.
Carrie: Combine luggage/passenger car
Tumblr media
Whilst Carrie is only ever stated to be a luggage van, I think it's possible she's a combine, fitted with a passenger section as well as luggage compartment. She's likely part of Control's express train, and a combine would allow for more passengers. Plus her design just fits this idea to me.

Important news everybody!
So in Switzerland, there is not only @sbb-cff-ffs-official, there are lots of smaller regional railways, usually owned by one or more cantons. One of them is the Regional Bus and Railroad Company of Ticino, in the italian-speaking part of the country. Or as it is known in their native language: Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi SA, or in short…
FART.
I'm not kidding, this is a picture from their homepage.
Tumblr media
Of all the acronyms chosen without a regard for people who know english, this is definitely takes the cake. Yes, the "POS" variant of the french TGV (paired with the MF variant of the german ICE 3) is also nice, but this rail and bus company is on a whole other level.
Their main rail line is the Centovalli line, a very scenic metre-gauge railway that connects the southern ends of the Simplon and Gotthard main alp-crossing routes. It's very nice, but often in the shadow of the more well-known lines like the Glacier Express, Bernina Express or Golden Pass Express. The Grand Train Tour of Switzerland, a marketing scheme that tries to organise the most scenic tourist-friendly train lines of Switzerland into a sort of coherent tour, includes a fucking bus from Tirano to Lugano in its main itinerary, but puts the Centovalli line (from Locarno to Domodossola) under "other nice lines". Don't get me wrong, the bus ride is actually a lot of fun, but it's absolutely not on the same level.
(By the way, half of the line is in Italy, operated by their italian partner company SSIF, but as their acronym is boring, we'll ignore them here.)
With that context out of the way, on to the news: The swiss portion of the Centovalli line is getting new trains! They already have some renders:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's honestly not that exciting a train, a version of the standard train building kit that Stadler sells to all the narrow-gauge railroads in Switzerland. But what is important is that they will all get names. And they're asking the internet for ideas.
Now, they have some suggestions, all points of interest along the line, and for their free text option they ask that you pick something like that as well. And if you do find yourself compelled to participate in that survey, I strongly suggest that you do the same. Please do not vandalise the train name survey of this little Swiss rail line.
I just think that I would be failing in my duty to you, dear readers, if I didn't tell you that here's an official chance to Name That Fart.

Highland Railway Jones Goods Class No 103
Fifteen locomotives were built by Sharp, Stewart and Company and delivered between September and November 1894, numbered 103 to 117. At the time, these were the most powerful main line engines in the country. Originally intended principally as freight engines, they were often called upon for passenger duties during the wide fluctuations of traffic which occurred on the Highlands Railway particularly during the summer season Number 103 (LMS 17916) was set aside for preservation by the LMS in 1934. It was restored to working order by British Railways in 1959 and spent several years operating enthusiasts' tours. During this time, it appeared in the 1965 film Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. It was finally retired in 1966 and is today in Glasgow's Museum of Transport. In addition to being the first ever British 4-6-0, no. 103 has since 1966 also has the less positive distinction of being the only surviving former Highland Railway locomotive.

Fraser Island/ K'gari
The alarm clock agitated at 6.15 and we were instantly awake for today's adventure. We had to present ourselves at the tourist information place in Urangan to be herded by bus to River Heads port to catch the early morning ferry to K'gari, the K being silent, leaving gari pronounced Gaary. (Fraser Island is a lot easier to articulate) Due to little research on my part, I was surprised at how large an island this was. In length, it is 123 km, 15 km wide, 22 km at its widest part; 1840 square kilometers in all. We were informed it was different from any island we are likely to have visited before because K'gari is made entirely of sand. Because of this, we were half expecting to pull alongside a giant sandcastle with a couple of paper flags at each end! Our tour guide put us right on this fallacy. I prefer, he said, to think of K'gari as a sand bank, not an island. If you imagine the last ice age, when sea levels were much lower, K'gari would merely have been a great big pile of sand attached to the rest of Australia, and the continental shelf would also be visible. The notion of how the sand was built up in the first place was put forward. It all began a long way away to the south of us here, in the Blue Mountains, to the west of Sydney. The wind blew, eroding and separating tiny particles of sand, depositing them into creeks, carried by rivers into the Pacific, where the longshore drift carried these sand particles north of Brisbane, forming this chain of islands. Today, K'gari is seen as the largest sand island in the world.
Now, some important advice from information gleaned from our last excursion experience that included a paid for lunch. 4 rules that you break at your peril and put you at risk of going hungry. 1. Assess the competition and position yourself at the front of the queue. There will be plenty of food. 2. Carry out a size assessment of the fellow eaters. Be sure to be in front of the people who appear to be the most familiar with large portions of food. Ergo, there will be more food available. 3. Take high value items; New Zealand green mussels, fish fillet (any sort), large lumps of chicken. (forget the legs), 4. Follow these rules, and you will be well placed for seconds.
Our tour firstly took us to McKensie Lake, which was indeed a curiosity because it was one of three lakes sat in pure sand! Afterall, sand doesn't usually hold water! This was an opportunity to lay on the sand by the lake before setting off for a boardwalk through rainforest. Between the years 1886 and 1991, loggers worked these forests on the island for their timbers: Hoop Pine, Kauri Pine, Turpentine, Blood Wood were some. This was big business, shipping timbers across to the mainland and processing them in Maryborough, yes of Mary Poppins fame. One large logging company was Mckensie and Sons, which dominated operations, even building railways to move these huge logs across difficult terrain. Then, in 1991, the federal government put a stop to the whole thing. They wanted UNESCO status as a world heritage site, and the price for this was to stop the logging. In 1992, UNESCO agreed and K'gari was granted what it wanted.
The east side of the island remarkably has approximately 80 km of flat tidal beach that our bus could drive along! Today, we probably covered 20 km of it, but often at speed. Our destination was the wreck of the SS Maheno, a steam packet that used to ply these waters and across to New Zealand in the early 20th century. 1935 came, and it was no longer cost-effective to run a steam ship, and our vessel was sold for scrap to a Japanese company who came and collected her. Deciding to tow her to the scrap yard rather than sail under power, both ships got into difficulties in a cyclone, resulting in the Maheno drifting and running ashore in the sand, where her hulk remains to this day. Now, a protected shipwreck, she will always be there rusting away. Great photography, though. We made our way back along the sands passing Coffee Rocks; ancient deposits of tree formations which break down leaving a coffeestain in the water, seeing the coloured sand cliffs and then to Eli Creek, a bit of a magnet for kids to play in the fresh waters flowing into the sea. Also, a magnet to the local population of dingoes keenly looking for a crafty meal either left by humans or foraged.
Then, it was back to the ferry and setting sail for Urangan and home. Fully fed, but weighing up whether a fish and chip supper might be required as a top-up. Another great day, tomorrow promises to be somewhat quieter.
We don't really like organised trips; being organised, conforming to a demanding itinerary, shuffling along with a whole load of other people, not being able to spend time on the parts that interest us, and not being able to skip or move on from areas that do not. It was a very long day, but we went places and saw things that we would not otherwise have had access to by our own resources. Therefore, it was well worth it, and the advice given was correct. This island, although by topography, was not remarkable, it was instead quite amazing and unique.
ps. We did stop off in Hervey Bay to get snapper and chips, but it was the third fish and chip we had tried before finding one that was open on a Saturday night beyond 7pm! What is the matter with these people? The one we did find open managed to stay open till eight! The rest of the Esplanade, the main entertainment area, was in darkness by then!
pps. We passed the Botanical Gardens at about 7pm, and we were somewhat surprised at the crowds queuing to get in. Then we remembered the Christmas lights display. And then we recalled it was nearly Christmas! A fact that to date that had escaped us!

Bunny and Raffles are going on a cruise!
Well, not exactly a cruise. While the tour by ship concept was most definitely a thing by 1895, this voyage is actually a scheduled steamship service.
North German Lloyd, or Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL) to use its German name, merged in 1970 to become Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world's biggest shipping companies. They still do cruises today if you're interested.
The 1890s were a time of intense Great Power rivalry, as the various colonial empires, which I am including the United States as one of, competed for global influence and prestige. The ocean liner business was one of those, as countries vied to have the biggest, fastest and most luxurious vessels.
Anyway, some notes on the trip:
Railway companies ran special trains that connected with the ocean liner departures and would be reserved for the passengers heading down to the port. These would have the best engines, carriages and most skilled crews driving the engines. They would also have plenty of space for luggage.
NDL's stuff generally started from Bremen and then docked at Southampton around 24 hours later. Or rather just off Southampton. Some of the ships of this period were too large to easily dock in some ports and so you'd use a smaller vessel called a tender to carry passengers and their luggage to/from shore. A tender that operated with Titanic at Cherbourg for its sole voyage is now at the museum in Belfast dedicated to that ship.
This is one of the real ships NDL had at the time, later sold to Russia.
By this point, evaporator technology for distilling drinkable water from seawater was becoming widespread, eliminating one major constraint on sea travel.
A pilot was a local seaman who would navigate the vessel into and out of a port, arriving and departing on their own vessel. They are still a feature of the business today as they know the local waters and even with GPS etc, a regular captain might not be familiar with every local feature.
Apparently, deckchairs could be reserved for the whole journey. This might be a good measure to stop certain people from putting towels on them at pools.
"von" indicates Captain von Heumann is of noble birth. While Germany abolished the privileges of its nobles in 1919, you can still get some people with those names today.
These ships would have also had less luxurious steerage accommodation for the less well-off travellers, especially migrants to the US and other places, which NDL carried a lot of.
Anyway, here's an 1889 brochure from NDL that covers things a lot better than I could:

Dan appreciates the work he can do, even if it has him interact with the rich idiot Phil more often that he would personally choose.
After All These Years (ao3) - jestbee
Summary: They met her after tour. Martyn’s friend’s dog had puppies and Phil fell in love at first sight. Dan did too, but he’ll deny it if you ask.
Dan tries to keep his distance, because she’s Phil’s dog not his, but she isn’t having any of it.
(and I spent all night) stuck on the puzzle (ao3) - carltzmann
Summary: It's Phil's first week of his final year of university, so really, he should be used to it by now. He should be able to behave normally when the cute guy down the hall is stepping out of the shower at the same time he's entering the bathroom.
Evidently not.
Baby, I'm a Star (ao3) - cactusgal
Summary: Phil is a lighting designer. Bored with the community concert gigs he has worked for a couple years, he applies at a touring company. He is assigned to a popular band, the dreamx, to cover a world tour. Getting paid to work on nearly every continent: how rad is that? Phil's excited until the first day of rehearsal when he learns something vital: the lead singer is a complete twat. Will Phil quit his job? Will Daniel, the lead singer, realize how much of a dick he's being? Will they eventually forget their differences and become friends? Who knows. Only time will tell.
Class of 1953 (ao3) - shutup_turd
Summary: It's the year 1950, and Phil is making a fresh start during his first term at the University of Oxford. He's found genuine friends, he's doing well in his studies, and he can finally be his authentic self...but there's one thing missing.
On a starry evening he stumbles upon a group of actors rehearsing Shakespeare in a sumptuous candlelit chapel. It's breathtaking sight... but it's not the scenary catching Phil's eye - instead it's a charming man with curly hair whose eyes seem to burn even brighter than the candles.
Dandelions (ao3) - throughtheirsnoses (det395)
Summary: Phil returns to his small town after studying how to improve his power that lets him grow plants with his mind. Phil is anxious and struggling with the expectations put on him to grow new plant-based medicine and on top of it all, his childhood best friend, Dan, gets his heart broken and turns to Phil as a rebound. Phil panics.
do you feel it too? (ao3) - heartsopenminds
Summary: A bad break-up has left Phil scared of getting his heart broken again. He’s not ready to date, but he’s missing the easy affection of a long-term relationship.
Cuddle therapy might be the perfect way to get what he needs, with no strings attached. But what happens when that’s no longer enough?
First to Listen (To Anything I Said) (ao3) - SylvesterLester
Summary: It's 2004, and Dan Howell is screwing up in school. He can't help that he's stuck in boring classes with boring people and just doesn't care. So when Phil Lester, one of the geekiest kids in school, is assigned to be his tutor, he's expecting this to just be another crappy part of his already crappy life.
But when it turns out Phil might be Dan's first real friend, his hormones threaten to screw all that up. Because that's all it is, right? Hormones?
home is where the heart is. (ao3) - orphan_account
Summary: 16 year old Daniel Howell had always felt out of place in his dad's fancy apartment or under the Singaporean sun. Life was not bad, but being the son of a British expatriate banker divorcee with commitment issues meant that there was never a home.
Inspired by the only constant in his life, a similar aged British youtuber by the name of Phil Lester, Dan decides to move to his supposed homeland Britain on a whim, in the hopes of escaping his bubble of isolation, and maybe find the place where he truly belonged.
Somehow Dan lands himself in one of the few notorious all boys boarding schools in Britain, one that has bizarre traditions, vicious inter-house competition and way too many attractive boys; and a roommate who had been Dan's best friend all along, even if Phil Lester hadn't known it.
Dan finally found home.
i don't know why (i can't keep my eyes off of you) (ao3) - orphan_account
Summary: Starting a new university is hard enough without Phil having to convince his best friend PJ he doesn't have a crush on their other flatmate, Dan. He definitely does not have a crush on Dan.
I Have My Freedom (but I don't have much time) (ao3) sierraadeux
Summary: Phil just wants to get away. To clear his mind of everything and reconnect with a long-lost passion. A certain horse and the rancher who comes to his aid have other ideas though - filling Phil's mind, and his sketchbook, with brown eyes and charcoal dotted freckles.
He only has the summer. And he's not here to make friends, human or equine.
Kiss From a Rose (ao3) - Nefertiti1052 (Succubusphan)
Summary: Phil is a hawker trading from town to town and looking for an adventure, but when he is caught out in a storm, a beautiful stranger becomes his only hope.
Laws Of Attraction (ao3) - strawberrysunflower
Summary: When Phil turned twenty-nine, he wrote out a list of all the things he had in his life. One terraced house in Manchester, rented. Two housemates who still buy the cheapest alcohol on offer in Tesco. Three failed long-term relationships.
After a spur-of-the-moment Friday night out on Canal Street, Phil ends up in the bed of a very handsome stranger. It’s a nice yet meaningless distraction from his directionless life. No big deal. Until he bumps into him again. And again. And again...
meet me at red dragon (ao3) - watergator
Summary: phil lester is a single 31 year old with a wild eight year old, ethan. dan howell is single 27 year old with a quiet five year old, noah.
when they meet at their son's swim lessons, for some reason phil can't get the pretty brown eyed stranger out of his head.
quiet on widow's peak (ao3) - dvp_95
Summary: Phil's got a list of paranormal experiences a mile long that he likes to share with the world. Abandoned buildings, cemeteries, and ghost stories have always called his name, and a particular fan of his has a really, really good ghost story.
Sparks of Light (ao3) - JudeAraya
Summary: In a world where some people had magic and some didn’t, Dan had always felt at odds. A boy whose magic was broken. The least gifted in his family. Dan’s only ability--being able to see auras--had done nothing but bring him pain, because in each aura Dan read, all he could see were the most depressing human emotions.
At twenty three, Dan was settled in London, resigned to a lonely life as a barista in a shared flat with no prospects and little hope, just trying to get by.
Until one day, he met a boy on the tube whose aura was so brilliant; so full of color and light, it changed everything.
The Canary (ao3) - galaxy_ash
Summary: Dan is a famous singer called The Capricious Canary, but known as The Canary by his fans and the public. Phil is a paparazzo who hates his job and is assigned to stalk Dan to get insider pictures.
The River (ao3) - Portia331
Summary: Dan arrived in Melbourne two weeks ago with just one suitcase crammed with running gear, psychology textbooks, and a mere fraction of his wardrobe especially curated to fit both his aesthetic and the Melbourne weather.
He's about to start in the role of a lifetime on a 12 month contract, but he's barely ready for the Australian summer heat, let alone what the world is about to throw at him.
what might come with the dawn (ao3) - cloud-gays (wind_brewed)
Summary: The Island has a Guardian, that's what people say. Phil doesn't know if this guardian is a mythical being or just a piece of gossip; a made-up story to make people feel safe during storm season. A made-up story just to make them feel secure.
Now that he decides to move in with his parents again, Phil needs the protection. Maybe he needs to reach out to this lonely, black-clothed being; reach out to the lonely man of winter.
Also called: Phil is a storm-chaser of sorts and Dan, a storm-magnet. In between running and hiding, they find each other inside the calm of the storm.

America’s Roller Coast, formerly known as Cedar Point, has had a history of innovation, and is one of the most notable tourist attractions in Ohio as a whole. People come from all over the world to see the peninsula's sights and screams. Cedar Point is also one of the world's oldest amusement parks, fitting a similar timeline to the notorious Coney Island of New York. One of the most underrated and somewhat forgotten defunct attractions in Cedar Point’s timeline is Disaster Transport. Disaster Transport changed the Rollercoaster industry, and subsequently the American economy as a whole. While some criticize it for being too similar to other rides and not extravagant enough, it holds a place in many hearts of the park's visitors from 1995-2012, and was known to be one of the first of its kind. It was Cedar Point's first themed dark ride, and would currently be Cedar Point’s only indoor ride.
To understand Disaster Transport, we must first understand the history of its home park, Cedar Point. Cedar Point started as a popular beach in the 1870s, and as transportation systems became more advanced with the industrial revolution, the area was trimmed into a popular tourist location. Once there was a railway system available that could transport guests to the peninsula, the area would begin to be cultivated into the amusement park we know today. The area began to get its name, Cedar Point, due to the large population of Cedar trees that were present at the time. The first ride would open, releasing a domino effect on the amusement park. This was known as the Switchback Railway, strikingly similar to the ride with the same name at Coney Island’s Luna Park. As time went on, more and more rides were added to the park, and non-ride attractions open to cater to multiple audiences. Cedar Point continued to renovate and add food stands, fair games, and an on site resort. This would be in conjunction with the advancement of Walt Disney World, the park’s most notable competitor, which would be the reasoning behind many decisions made for the park going into the 1980s.
This brings us to the year 1984, when cedar point was right at the throat of Walt Disney World, and had a problematic coaster that remained a fan favorite by park guests. This ride was known as Avalanche Run, a blue bobsled coaster built by Intamin right on the edge of the park by the beach. This ride was known as a tamer ride that would be enjoyed by families due to its low G-forces but moderate speeds. The appeal of this ride was soon overshadowed by the fact that it would have long down times due to maintenance needs mostly caused by the location of the ride. Sand, water, and debris would be blown into the rides tubes, which meant an employee would have to climb out to the affected area and sweep it out so the ride could function again. This would cause low-ridership and make the ride almost completely unprofitable, leaving a rather ugly stain on Cedar Point’s reputation when given the same scrutiny given to its rival park, Walt Disney World.
The fix for the Avalanche Run’s lack of success came with the introduction of a new CEO at Cedar Point, Robert L, Munger Jr. His idea to combat Disney’s success was to retheme the problematic ride in a way that would mimic the elements that Walt Disney World was notorious for. This would manifest itself in the enclosure of Avalanche Run and renovations to make what was known as Disaster Transport. The initial building of Avalanche Run cost 3,400,000 dollars, and the renovations to create Disaster Transport would cost the company 4,000,000 dollars, and would take one off-season to complete. One important external detail for those interested in the lore of the ride is the sign and logo for the ride. The logo looked like a broken sign for a company called “Dispatch Master Transport” with letters falling off to spell “Disaster Transport”. This ride would become notorious for being too similar to Space Mountain and Star Tours at Walt Disney World. What critics wouldn’t recognize at this time was that it was the start of a revolution in popular theme park attractions. It would be one of the pioneer dark coasters of the timeline of amusement parks.
The renovated Avalanche Run would become Disaster Transport, and the most uniquely built ride of Cedar Point. The outside perspective of the ride was essentially a white box-like building, with the phrase “12-E” painted on the side. This detail was subject to a lot of
Speculation. Some thought that it stood for Lake Erie, E standing for Erie and L being the 12th letter of the alphabet. Some speculate that 12-E was painted on the ride because the ride was the 12th ride designed by Eric, an ITEC employee. Many thought the external look of the ride was mysterious and a little unfit for the park. There was multiple exits of the box building in the form of white tube like structures, mimicking the original structure of Avalanche Run.
While the external appearance of the ride is important to the timeline of Disaster Transport, the internal structures are what are really fascinating and contribute to the story of the ride. The internal structure was groundbreaking for the park as it was the first indoor, themed ride queue. The queue consisted of a dark, black-lit succession of rooms, made to look like an airport with something just not quite right. In these rooms, you would find different small and large details. These would include crates of a certain type of fuel, posters from destinations around the world featuring those places being attacked by a mythical creature of sorts. There were also models of the ship you would be taking, and a security camera that would light up a “Reject” sign when a park guest would stand in front of it. One of the most memorable of these details is the robot everyone knows and loves, Dave. Dave would sit at a reception desk as you were passing through his room and answer fake phone calls for the company, and sometimes make announcements to guests passing through. Another memorable detail about the interior of the ridewas the use of effects. This was the first ride to have audio, lights, and sculptures within the ride track. The building surrounding the ride track was filled with lights, sculptures of planets, aliens, and a model of a wrecked ship identical to yours, to stick with the theme and build the plot of the ride.
The theming behind this ride gives us insight into the plot of it. The plot is an integral part of its story, as it was part of Cedar Point’s CEO at the time’s plan to combat its competitors on the market. The plot has to be pieced together from different fragments of media and is up to speculation to many fans of the ride. The most coherent one is brought together using the ride queue and the trailer for the ride that came out before its opening season in 1990. The ride supposedly starts with you getting in line to take a spaceship to a vacation on mars with the company Dispatch Master Transport. Dispatch Master Transport is notorious for transporting a certain type of fuel to the International Space Station, but has recently expanded its ventures. As you start moving through the queue you start to get the feeling that something isn’t right, consolidated by the fact that in some seasons of the ride, the main gate would “fail” and not let guests through, forcing them to go through the back rooms of the company's launch building. When you do this you see more details of a sketchy situation, and overhear the companies robot secretary, Dave, answering phone calls and trying to give customer service support to callers talking about things like malfunctions and crashes, while also trying to keep the park guests from hearing him, inevitably failing and building the suspense for park guests in line.
This brings us to the plot of the ride itself, the main event if you will. We can assume from the trailer for the ride, that the ship you are supposed to take to space crashes, along with your partner ship, as implied by the audio in the trailer stating “Mayday! Mayday! This is Dispatch Master Transport-”. This advertises the ride as a ride through space gone wrong, and we all understand that the ship crashes in space. What we don’t all know is what happened exactly to the other ship that you pass by on the track. You can see an identical ship torn apart, shipping containers, and an alien, in the ride track itself. This would point one to believe that the other ship was attacked by aliens and the fuel that was also being shipped was about to explode. You would be the only ship to survive. At the end of the ride, you would end somewhere different from the start of the ride, which was relatively a new concept for these rides. A team member would then scream “Welcome To Alaska!”, implying that instead of Mars, you have crash landed in Alaska.
While the ride was very popular when it was brand new, over time it developed issues that would lead to it being defunct in 2012. One of these issues was the degradation of the ride's effects over time. As things would become broken, Cedar Point would not pay to fix them. This would lead to decreased ridership and would turn what was once a revolutionary dark ride into a dark tunnel. There would also be long closures because important parts of the moving mechanisms that made the ride operational would break down and it would take extremely long to get new parts. As the effects started to go, the story went along with it, leading more and more people to be confused as to what the ride actually was, which made it hard to attract more riders who were unfamiliar with the ride. Another issue that carried over despite the renovations in 1990, would be the fact that every time that it would rain the ride would have to shut down because the roof enclosing the ride was notoriously leaky, which would anger park guest looking for something to do while waiting out the storm. Many also thought that the ride wasn’t attractive enough to be on the beachside of Cedar Point, which the company was working on renovating to become another place for entertainment, and expand the resort as a whole. The significant history and uniqueness of this ride wouldn’t be enough to keep it from closure in 2012.
When Cedar Point announced they would be closing Disaster Transport, many die-hard fans who loved the nostalgia for it were very upset. In response to this the park announced that they would be making the closing season for the ride an event to raise money for charity. They called this “Disaster Transport: Final Launch, For the Kids”. This would cause nostalgic riders to flock to the ride before it was demolished after the 2012 season. Parts of the ride still remain throughout the park. Dave, everyone's favorite robot secretary, can still be seen at the site where the ride once stood and is still operational. Cedar Point also featured a bobsled from the ride full of seasonal characters along with a sign saying “Welcome To Alaska” on the side of the track of the Cedar Point Railroad during Halloweekends. This would stand out to park guests previously familiar with the ride. There is also a pedestal commemorating the ride nearby the current site. The current place where Disaster Transport and Space Spiral once stood is now occupied by the Bolliger and Mabillard winged coaster, Gatekeeper, with its keyholes being the most notorious part of the ride. Gatekeeper is meant to be a welcoming guardian of the park, according to the theme markers around the new ride. Another notable ride that has occupied the space until 2021 was Wicked Twister, which was recently decommissioned and permanently closed for the 2022 season.
Disaster Transport, while now defunct, played an integral role in the amusement park industry. This was because it was a key part in stimulating the competition between parks like Walt Disney World and Cedar Point. It was one of the very first dark rides and one of the only bobsled coasters. It also comments on issues that were current to the time like the possibility of space travel and the increase in regulations around travel and how it plays into the United States capitalist economy. It also changed the standards for ride theming and technology, and helped Intamin gain their place in the amusement park industry. The growth of the companies that built rides, like intamin would expand the theme park industry, affecting the overall American economy in an unpredicted way.
The amusement park industry was one of the most impactful industries in the American economy. Amusement parks would be first propagated by the industrial revolution and the expansion of the middle class. As the commercial economy began to spread, more Americans had time and money for leisure activities, prompting the opening of the first amusement parks, Cedar Point and the plethora of attractions on Coney Island. This would then bring us to today, where Amusement parks would be one of the most prominent uses of time in the world, being notorious vacation spots. Cedar Point would attract tourists to the United States to visit the park and stimulate the economy with the money being spent in the park and the industries it supported. Disaster Transport first into this by building the notoriety of the park and helping it build its brand as whole.

Day 10 of @storyweaverofgondor’s cats-pril - railway. How could I not include Skimble, the dad of the railway train, thinking about his adopted son and future son-in-law? Also on Ao3 here.
..
A loud cooing caught Skimbleshanks’ attention as he did his regular patrol of the railway station. Trouble? It didn’t sound like the odd sounds humans made when they were distressed. He jumped up onto the window sill of the stationmaster’s office, and saw a crowd of humans watching a familiar Cat. A Calico Cat, sitting up on the bench and looking around for something.
It was Mungojerrie. Skimble paused, he hadn’t known Jerrie was coming to the station today. Then again, although Mungojerrie wasn’t particularly secretive, he didn’t always think to share his plans. He was a chatty young Cat, but tended to keep his problems and more serious things close to the chest. A by-product of his time with Macavity, Skimble thought sadly, Rumpleteazer was much the same. He had informally adopted the two when they first came to the Junkyard, recognising that their cheery bravado was covering a much less happy situation. The three of them were quite close now. As he watched, another Cat appeared, and Skimble instantly knew why Jerrie had forgotten to tell him he was coming.
Jerrie jumped off the bench and ran over to where Coricopat had come, nuzzling the other with a wide grin. Skimble felt himself smile along. Jerrie was completely enamoured by Coricopat. If he had Cori on his mind, which was often the case now, most other things tended to slip his mind – not telling Skimble he was visiting the station, for example. From his elevated position, he was able to look closely at Coricopat. The Tom was difficult to read, in his opinion, but Jerrie did not seem to have any trouble doing so. He thought Cori might be happy right now? Mungojerrie seemed to be chatting animatedly at him, but yes, Skimble thought he could make out a subtle smile on his face. He didn’t have any problem with Coricopat, the Tom was quiet, but he always came across nice. Frankly, Skimble was delighted that Jerrie was so taken with him.
Knowing Jerrie’s past and his difficulties trusting, it was initially surprising he latched onto Cori so firmly, but when he thought back, he honestly couldn’t remember a time when Cori had lied, or tried to hide something. That must be what it was. Although he wasn’t overly expressive or talkative, he was honest, and straight-talking. Skimble knew that Macavity wove an intricate web of lies and deception, so Cori’s demeanour must be a soothing balm for Jerrie. His company and affection came without caveat, no strings attached.
He knew Jerrie’s feelings ran deeper than friendship. He could see it in the way he nuzzled close to Cori, intertwining their tails as they walked next to each other. Skimble knew Jerrie had been wanting to tell him something recently, but he hadn’t quite worked himself up to it yet. Clearly, it was about this. Whether or not Cori felt the same way, Skimble could not tell. He could be patient though, he thought, jumping down to the ground and snaking out to the waiting hall. He kept hidden from the other two Cats. Honestly, he had no concerns, he was just being nosy. They were engrossed in conversation. He couldn’t hear Coricopat’s quiet voice, but he could hear Jerrie’s booming laugh and loud chatter.
Oh, he felt a tug of affection pull at his heart, so strong it nearly hurt. Jerrie was giving Cori a sort of tour of the railway, and he had just referred to the mail train as “dad’s train”. Jerrie had never called him dad before, at least not to his face. He had remarked before that Cori was easy to talk to, but that was a fairly large emotional confession, wasn’t it? Jerrie must feel completely safe with him, to speak so openly. If being with Cori allowed Jerrie to be so confident in himself and his expression, then Skimble would welcome him to the family with open arms.

On October 15th 1902 Edinburgh's Balmoral Hotel opened its doors for the first time.
Look out for my own connections to this grand old hotel, both in a personal sense and through my home town of Loanhead.
Back then it was called The North British and in Edinburgh a lot of people, myself included, still refer to it by the initials NB.
On Wednesday 15 October, 1902, on the front page of The Scotsman newspaper, a small advert appeared: “North British Station Hotel. This hotel in direct communication with Waverley Station is now open F.T. Burcher, hotel manager.”
According to the hotel’s official history, the North British was “a vanguard for the railway company which built it, a surrogate for the grand station they had never been permitted to erect in the sensitive site between Old and New Town.” The architecture, executed in golden sandstone, features towers and balconies galore. It’s a glorious mash-up of influences from across northern Europe. Expensive to build as well as to run – it gobbled upwards of 200 tons of coal every month – the hotel was seen as a “sign of the future heralded by the railways, the newly opened Forth Bridge and the electric lights switched on in Princes Street just seven years earlier”.
Nevertheless, some believed the Caledonian, which opened a year later, boasted the more advantageous location. And some detractors found the sheer size of the hotel gauche, complaining “it is coarse and obstructive at once”.
The hotel – working name “Waverley Station Hotel” – was the brainchild of George Wieland, a former NBR company secretary who retired to its board in 1890. Having toured some of the most lavish hotels in the world – where he realised the importance of having a banqueting hall to bring in business – he hired W Hamilton Beattie to draw up plans for Edinburgh. The hotel would have 300 bedrooms, 52 bathrooms, and 70 lavatories, and was designed to encourage the circulation of fresh air. Lifts shot people straight from the station into the hotel’s foyer, and beyond that, to rooms furnished with mahogany, leather and crimson moquette. It’s said that the bill for plants and flowers exceeded the bill for gas, and there was even a special machine to burnish the silver. Weiland made sure the new hotel’s cellars were full of the finest champagnes, hocks, ports, and whisky, the better to entice his ideal customers – wealthy, landed families moving between their multiple residences.
In 1922, the hotel became part of the London and North Eastern Railway Company and by all accounts the hotel sparkled from top to bottom, but after the Second World War, when the railways were nationalised, and Prestwick airport began getting transatlantic traffic, things began a slow downward trajectory. Even so, the hotel remained the destination for Edinburgh society events, be they corporate or personal. In 1983, British Rail sold off its rather faded North British Hotel. In 1988, it closed for refurbishment, it was in dire need of this, some of the rooms were looking a wee bit shabby, the wooden window frames unable to open fully, and how do I know this? Well I used to be the window cleaner in the hotel and the windows that didn't open meant I had to find one close by and edge along the crumbling sandstone ledges, the worst affected, and highest were on the south of the hotel and there was a six storey drop down to the train station below.
At the start of the 1990s, Balmoral International Hotels, an Edinburgh based company, bought the venue. In 1997, the Balmoral became the first hotel bought by Sir Rocco Forte as he assembled his portfolio of hotels. It currently boasts Scotland’s only Bollinger Bar, as well as the Michelin-starred Number One restaurant run by executive chef Jeff Bland, a spa, and ten function rooms accommodating up to 450 people.
Famous guests over the years have included Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Palin, Beyoncé and JK Rowling, who finished the last Harry Potter novel here, on 11 January, 2007, and then daubed her signature on a bust in her room.
A second wee link with the hotel, is Charles Forte, Grandfather of the present owner began his working life in my home town of Loanhead when he moved to Scotland from Italy.

Top Eco-Friendly Travel Practices in India
I
ndia, with its diverse landscapes, vibrant cultures, and rich heritage, attracts millions of travelers every year. However, with increasing tourism comes a responsibility to protect the environment and preserve natural resources. Eco-friendly travel practices ensure that we explore sustainably without harming the planet. Here are the top eco-friendly travel practices to follow in India:
1. Choose Sustainable Accommodations
Opt for eco-resorts, homestays, or hotels that prioritize sustainability. Look for certifications like LEED, Green Key, or EarthCheck, which indicate eco-friendly operations. These accommodations use renewable energy, practice waste management, and support local communities.
2. Use Public or Green Transportation
Reduce your carbon footprint by choosing trains, buses, or bicycles instead of private taxis. Indian Railways offers an extensive and affordable network. In cities, opt for metro trains, electric rickshaws, or cycle rentals to travel sustainably.
3. Support Local Communities
Purchase handmade crafts, eat at local eateries, and stay at family-run accommodations. This not only supports the economy but also reduces the environmental impact of mass-produced goods and imported products.
4. Reduce Plastic Waste
Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it at safe drinking water stations. Avoid plastic bags by bringing a cloth bag for shopping. Say no to single-use plastics like straws, cutlery, and disposable cups.
5. Practice Responsible Trekking & Wildlife Tourism
When exploring nature, stick to marked trails to prevent soil erosion. Avoid disturbing wildlife, and never feed animals. Opt for ethical wildlife tourism experiences that prioritize conservation over commercial entertainment.
6. Participate in Eco-Tourism Activities
Engage in activities like nature walks, birdwatching, and volunteering in environmental projects. Many eco-tourism destinations in India, such as Sikkim, Coorg, and Kerala, promote sustainable travel experiences.
7. Conserve Water & Energy
Be mindful of your water usage—take shorter showers and reuse towels. Turn off lights, fans, and air conditioning when leaving your accommodation. Use solar-powered chargers and energy-efficient devices.
8. Respect Local Culture & Traditions
Cultural sustainability is as important as environmental conservation. Dress modestly, learn about local customs, and interact respectfully with indigenous communities. Avoid behaviors that may disrupt traditional ways of life.
9. Choose Sustainable Tour Operators
When booking tours, choose companies that follow responsible tourism practices. Look for operators that support conservation efforts, employ local guides, and ensure fair wages for workers.
10. Offset Your Carbon Footprint
Consider contributing to carbon offset programs that plant trees or invest in renewable energy projects. Many airlines and travel organizations offer carbon offset options when booking flights.
Final Thoughts
Eco-friendly travel in India is not just a trend—it’s a necessity for preserving the country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. By adopting these sustainable travel practices, we can enjoy incredible experiences while ensuring that future generations can do the same.
