with the setting sun at his back, thoma takes his waverider from ritou to the sandy shores of nazuchi beach. his poor bitter pufferfish hadn’t made it despite his efforts to heal its infection, and he hadn’t wanted to bother watatsumi’s divine priestess with a problem as trivial as caring for fish. so after laying his beloved friend to rest in his garden, thoma has made it his mission to safely capture another so his surviving pufferfish had a companion in its pond. with his fishing rod and a parcel of fake fly bait, he digs his heels into the sand and throws out his reel, waiting for the inevitable bite. the rustling of leaves and the snapping of branches draws thoma’s attention, and as he jerks his head to the source, the blond spies a group of nobushi charging towards him. “oh shit!—” thoma curses, dropping his rod to summon forth his polearm; only to remember he had left it on the deck of his waverider “—i really should’ve known better. but there’s no time to cry over spilt milk now—” with forlorn sigh, thoma brandishes his fishing rod as his weapon, preparing to parry with the sharp edge of a ronin’s blade “—have pity on this poor fisherman and use the dull edge?”

his terrible attempt at humor in the midst of battle only aggravates his opponent who swings his sword wildly in response. thoma dodges their strikes, but loses his footing when another adversary joins the fray. “hey, this isn’t very fair!—” thoma cries out as he trips face first into the sand, rolling away before the samurai’s blade could maim him. scrambling back onto his feet, the man uses the terrain to his advantage and kicks sand into nobushi’s face, putting distance between them once again and taking a defensive stance. but all was for naught when pain blooms across his flank, the sound of flesh being cut echoing in his ears. thoma falls to his knees, clutching his side as he glares balefully at the enemy who had blindsided him “—that was a fucking cheap shot!”

he was cornered and wounded, a combination that usually entailed a painful death. as his assailants move closer, thoma closes his eyes. “i’m sorry, lady ayaka. may we find each other in the next life—” he mutters under his breath, bracing for the touch of cold metal against his neck. the crackling of electro nearly bursts his eardrums, and it’s enough to prompt thoma to open his eyes. he takes in the scene before him, mouth agape: two ronin lay unmoving across the beach, arrows embedded into their necks , the perpetrator standing at a distance with their bow drawn “—kujou sara-san?”

relief fills him, but it’s quickly replaced with anger when another nobushi strikes the back of sara’s head with the butt of their hilt. with a growl, thoma springs into action, snapping his fishing rod in two over his knee. taking one half of his broken tool, he pulls his arm back and throws it with deadly accuracy, putting as much power behind it as he could. his impromptu weapon strikes true, impaling the samurai in the chest with enough force to knock him back and away from kujou sara. adrenaline rushes through his veins, making him forget his own injury as he stumbles towards his savior. “man, i just wanted to come out here and fish, but instead i got ambushed—” thoma groans, falling beside the recuperating general “—we’re even, kujou-san, but could i ask for a favor? do you know how to stitch wounds? i’ve got a hook and fishing line you could use. those bastards got me good, haha.”
