These days I struggle to write anything, which is why I haven't put anything on this blog yet, despite having plenty to put on it. As a kid and a teenager I was an aspiring writer. I would write and read tomes, but never actually finished anything, and now I don't have the motivation or attention span. One of the many regrets I carry about the way my life has gone.

I grew up poor. We didn't have a car, my mother couldn't drive. We took the bus to get groceries once a week and outsode of school we just stayed home. When I was little I used to go down from home in Dunedin to stay with my Granny in Riverton, driving south for a good 3 hours in the truck of one uncle or other. That's where my love of being on the road started.

When I was about ten my aunt took us on a trip around the South Island of New Zealand, Te Waipounamu, my homeland. The sights I saw, that have been lost to my bad memory! I distinctly remember Arthur's Pass, seeing snow and mountains and keas for the first time, making a snowman that the keas immediately destroyed. I didn't mind a bit. I remember Fiordland, Piopiotahi, falling in love with the waterfalls carving out paths down the near vertical greenery, curious dolphins riding the wake of the boat to get a look at us. Mitre Peak, Rahotu, is etched in my mind. We walked on the ground to see it, overburdened with wet weather gear on a rare sunny day, and the sandflies didn't bother us much.

When we finally came home I was sad.

NZ Via Flickr: The mountain was named by Captain John Lort Stokes of HMS Acheron, who found its shape reminiscent of the mitre headwear of Christian bishops. The Māori name for the peak is Rahotu. Mitre Peak is close to the shore of Milford Sound, in the Fiordland National Park in the southwestern South Island. It rises to 5,560 feet (1,690 m) with almost sheer drops to the water. The peak is actually a closely grouped set of five peaks, although from most easily accessible viewpoints, it appears as a single point. Milford Sound is part of Te Wahipounamu, a World Heritage Site as declared by UNESCO.

Taranaki!!! According to Māori mythology,Taranaki once resided in the middle of the North Island, with all the other New Zealand volcanoes. The beautiful Pihanga was coveted by all the mountains, and a great battle broke out between them. Tongariro eventually won the day, inflicted great wounds on the side of Taranaki, and causing him to flee. Taranaki headed westwards, following Te Toka a Rahotu (the Rock of Rahotu) and forming the deep gorges of the Whanganui River, paused for a while, creating the depression that formed the Te Ngaere swamp, then heading north. Further progress was blocked by the Pouakai ranges, and as the sun came up Taranaki became petrified in his current location. When Taranaki conceals himself with rainclouds, he is said to be crying for his lost love, and during spectacular sunsets, he is said to be displaying himself to her. In turn, Tongariro's eruptions are said to be a warning to Taranaki not to return.
