Rapid Fire w/Nico Hischier
Q: Besides the Devils, which team improved the most last season? A: I think Nashville
Q: Why? A: I mean, they definitely have some great additions, and overall they were a pretty good team last year. So they've gotten some really experienced players and some even more experienced players. I think they've improved a lot.
Q: Has there ever been a Nico Hischier Night at the Rock? A: No, I don't think so. I mean, I once had a Nico and Chico Resch Bobblehead Night.
Q: Let's say you get your own dedicated evening and you get to choose the giveaway. What would it be? A: I would make it so that everyone gets a really good Swiss chocolate.
Q: Is there a particular brand? A: Ragusa or Ovaltine
Q: Not Tolberone? A: No, you can get that everywhere. That doesn't count. But I like it too.
Q: Which athlete inspired you the most as a child? A: I would say Roger Federer. Pretty easy answer for a Swiss. I think he probably inspired a lot of people.
Q: Name one teammate that will surprise people this season. A: Jesper Bratt. It just feels like every summer or every season he has another (big) year. I can also name Luke Hughes. I think he's worked really hard this summer and is ready for his second year, so I'd say Luke as well.
Q: What talent of another player's do you wish you had? Probably Jack's (Hughes) smooth hands. They're pretty smooth, like always, not loud and just smooth.
Q: You probably mentor some of the younger players now. When you came into the league, which teammate was your mentor? A: When I came to the Devils, there were a lot of older players and I had some great mentors. Obviously, Andy Greene, our captain at the time, was one of the players I looked up to. I also remember Brian Boyle being there with me. And of course Travis Zajac, who's been with the Devils for a very long time. For me as a center and also for him as a center, I always watched his game and learned from him, especially the way he always played in our own zone. I think he was at a top level in the D-zone for many years and still created offense. He was definitely an inspiration to me as well, especially watching him on the faceoffs.
Q: What is the next non-hockey trip you would like to take? A: A private trip to Costa Rica.
Q: Is this going to happen or is this just a plan? A: Just a plan.
Q: What's something most people don't know about New Jersey or the Tri-State Area? A: That we have great bagels. Everyone knows that.
Q: What don't the Swiss know about New Jersey? A: Swiss probably don't know much about New Jersey at all. [Neither did I when I was younger.] Jersey has a lot to offer. Jersey has its beaches. Jersey also has its nature and yes, it has all that. The location on the east coast is very good. In Jersey you will find what you are looking for.
Q: Who is the most disciplined nutritionist on the Devils? A: Probably Bratter.
Q: What does he do? A: He's just a super healthy guy. He knows what he eats and what gives him energy, and he's just a very intelligent person when it comes to what he puts in his body and what he does with his body. Yes, he's worked hard on himself and knows a lot.
Q: What is the best rivalry in the NHL today? A: I would say New York Rangers versus New Jersey Devils. I'll take that.
Q: Unfortunately Switzerland won't be playing in the 4-nation face-off. Will you still be watching and who will you be picking? A: Yes, I will be watching on the beach somewhere. I will definitely be watching and it should be really interesting games because they are all great, great teams. They will all have very good teams. I'm probably picking USA. It's hard to pick one team because every team is obviously very strong.
Q: Maybe watch from the beach in Costa Rica? A: Maybe...maybe

Boyo in the Old Country, Part 2
Part 1
Today Baz explored some of the historic towns of southeast Sicily. First he stopped in Modica, where some of the first chocolate was made in Europe after cocoa beans started being imported from the New World. The town is still full of chocolate factories, and Baz enjoyed a literal melted candy bar before checking out the town.
Baz was bummed that the Warhol exhibit didn’t open until later in the day, but the Baroque cathedral was an acceptable substitute.
Next Baz visited Scicli, where people have been digging caves out of the soft volcanic rock for centuries, and continued living in them until the 1950s. He visited a museum maintained by a man whose grandfather grew up in one. No numpties in were in evidence.
Baz below the caves.
After all that educational sightseeing, Baz had earned an afternoon at the beautiful Donnalucata beach.
The water was perfect.
Baz returned that night to Ragusa Ibla, where he grudgingly rode the Trenino Barocco (“baroque little train”) along with fifty of his newest, drunkest best friends. He secretly loved it but refused to be photographed on it.
Baz’s view from the trenino:
Cqoming up in Part 3: Baz experiences some unique Sicilian weather, explores local cuisine, and finds a new life motto.

Strade di Sicilia - Ragusa, Santangelo Muraxano, Poggioreale etc.
Allora vado.
So I'm going. I walk in these sunny and silent streets almost like a long wave in the flat sea of August, living the colors and dressing them with memories. I am your desire to be elsewhere, to escape where the music never ends, to remain in the silence of the mountains, flying in the rustling of the woods, to be what you desire: the fire of the black mountain, the spring of water that feeds the lemons and olive trees, the lips you give yourself to, the sky colored with fire when the sun leaves towards new dawns. Erase faded memories and seek happiness in the flowering of moments or in the flash of emotions, in eyes that light up the soul, and make the crows of regrets fly away, the poison of delusions. We go wherever you want without fear of getting lost, leaving behind beaches of verses, nests of smiles, nights covered in stars, hugs as strong as life. So let's go, let's create our eternal spring, with the souls that walk happy, hand in hand.

A book recommendation
The topic of book recommendations just came up. By coincidence I was about to recommend a book I recently acquired. The publisher threatens to unleash the Furies from Hades if anyone dares to reproduce anything from the book without written permission. But since this is a plug for this particular book, maybe they will tolerate my copying a couple of paragraphs to partly illustrate the author's point of view.
The book is called "The Eagle in Splendour: Inside the Court of Napoleon". It's by Philip Mansel, and my copy is from the Tauris Parke 2021 edition.
To whet your appetite, gentle readers, here are the promised extracts:
From pp. 1-2:
"Despite or because of his Jacobin past, General Bonaparte, First Consul of the French Republic, was an ultra-monarchist. In 1799-1804, at the same time as introducing a new constitution, with the Senate, Tribunate and Corps Législatif, he established a court system, in a calculated sequence of monarchising measures. First came a guard (1799); then official costumes (1800); residence and receptions in the Tuileries palace (1800-1); a chapel headed by his favourite composer Paisiello (...) (1802); a monarchy, a dynasty and a coronation (1804); finally a nobility (1808). The choice of such a system, when France was a victorious republic, and the rapidity with which the Republicans adapted to it, proves its appeal. The transformation of France into a republic in 1792 had been partly due to contingences: the 'executive gap' left by the absence of a vigorous monarch, minister or general; the radicalism of the National and Legislative Assemblies; and war."
From pp. 3-4:
"Napoleon I re-monarchised Europe as well as France. Not only did he appoint members of his dynasty: Prince of Piombino and Lucca (1805); Grand Duke of Berg (1805); and Kings of Holland (1806), Naples (1806), Westphalia (1807) and Spain (1808); but with a consistency revealing his monarchical principles, he also abolished all republics in Europe, old and new: Venice (1797), France (1804), Genoa (1805), Lucca (1805), Ragusa (1808), and the Cisalpine (1805), Batavian (1806) and Septinsular (1807) republics. He made Frankfurt, the classic German city-state, into a Grand Duchy (to which his step-son Eugene-Napoleon would have succeeded) and allotted 52 former 'free cities' of the Holy Roman Empire to different German rulers, or to himself. Thus, by 1812 he had placed every city in Europe under a monarch; even Swiss cities acknowledged him as 'Mediator of the Helvetic Confederation'. Europe was more monarchical than at any time since the rise of the Italian city states in the twelfth century."
I, for one, am hooked. I found the passage about France becoming a republic because of contingencies particularly interesting. To my mind it explains why it was so easy for even people as the Marshals to accept the return of the Bourbon monarchy, as well as explaining why Marshals such as Bessières and Berthier, both royalists in my opinion, were ready to serve the new, Napoleonic monarchy: the transition might have appeared to them as one from monarchy to Révolution and instability, to a new monarchy, and for Berthier, to the old Versailles monarchical dynasty again he knew so well.
I am not very far ahead yet in this book, but so far I love it and highly recommend it.

Cringe-Worthy Crush
Olivia Rodrigo's track "love is embarrassing" from her second studio album Guts (2023) is making waves with its infectious new wave vibe and raw honesty. Released on September 8, 2023, this track stands out as a highlight of the album, showcasing Rodrigo's unique ability to blend nostalgic sounds with deeply personal storytelling.
Exploring the Song: From its opening notes, "love is embarrassing" captures the essence of youthful infatuation with a fresh, new wave sound. Co-written with her frequent collaborator and producer Dan Nigro, the song features lively guitars, a beat reminiscent of '80s new wave, and lyrics that dive deep into the awkwardness of young love. Rodrigo’s performance here is a masterclass in self-deprecating humor, as she reflects on how embarrassing it can be to fall head over heels for someone who ultimately doesn’t measure up.
The song’s bridge, with its Devo-like energy, and the chorus’s vibrant guitars, transport listeners back to the era of new wave while maintaining Rodrigo’s modern edge. Rolling Stone’s Rob Sheffield describes it as an "impeccable eighties new-wave tribute," highlighting its blend of synths and guitars that draw comparisons to iconic bands like the Cars and the Go-Go’s.
Behind the Scenes: "love is embarrassing" was one of the final tracks Rodrigo wrote for Guts, penned after a night of reflecting on every awkward moment she could recall. This song was crafted in Rodrigo’s living room and presented to Nigro just days before the album's deadline. Despite Nigro's initial reservations, it was included in the album, adding a personal touch to the collection.
Rodrigo and Nigro crafted Guts over ten months, with the first eight dedicated to songwriting and recording. The album showcases Rodrigo’s growth since her debut, with "love is embarrassing" standing out for its unique blend of new wave influences and Rodrigo’s trademark raw emotion.
Critical Reception: The song has received glowing reviews from critics, who praise its relatable lyrics and Rodrigo’s expressive performance. AllMusic’s Heather Phares and Consequence’s Paolo Ragusa named it a standout track, while Billboard’s Jason Lipshutz celebrated Rodrigo’s talent for blending deep musical genre exploration with intimate storytelling. The song’s self-critical lyrics and vibrant production have made it a favorite among fans and critics alike.
Commercial Success: "love is embarrassing" made an impressive debut on the charts, entering the top 30 in several countries including the US, Canada, and Australia. It earned a gold certification in Canada and a silver certification in the UK. The song’s success is a testament to Rodrigo’s ability to connect with listeners through both her music and her live performances.
Live Performances and Impact: During her Guts World Tour, Rodrigo included "love is embarrassing" in her setlist, where it became a fan favorite. Despite a wardrobe malfunction during a London performance, Rodrigo’s handling of the situation was praised, demonstrating her professionalism and grace.
In Conclusion: "love is embarrassing" is more than just a nostalgic throwback; it’s a poignant exploration of youthful heartache wrapped in a catchy new wave package. Rodrigo’s ability to merge vibrant, retro sounds with personal, relatable lyrics makes this track a standout on Guts. As she continues to tour and evolve as an artist, "love is embarrassing" remains a shining example of her creative prowess and emotional depth.
