Daycare on campus
There used to be an Early Leaning Center on campus that was a daycare for the kutztown community and it was also an educational tool for Education majors to get their certifications on campus but unfortunately, it was closed due to budget cuts in the Fall of 2010.
There was hope that it could be saved at the time. Dr. Tracy Keyes, Chair of the Elementary Education Department in Kutztown University said at the time, “ "I'm under the impression that this is a money issue and that with a sizable amount of money an endowment could be set up so that we could remain open," (Keyes, 2010)
That could have been a solution to preventing the closure of that program but that option was prioritized and 10 years later in 2020, there should be a select committee focused on reopening this ELC program.
Kutztown alumna Elizabeth Sica was the president of a nonprofit parents support group called Friends of the Early Learning Center said that, "It would have been very beneficial for the university (if) instead of trampling on the program, they should be holding it up, enhancing it and building it up,", "They've said before they're not in the business of educating preschoolers, but they are in the business of educating preschool teachers."
After all, Elizabeth brings up strong, excellent points out about Kutztown’s legacy of it being founded in 1866 as the Keystone State Normal School specializing in teacher education later being named Kutztown State Teachers College in 1928 and it was only in 1960 that it was named Kutztown State College in 1960 when it expanded their college programs and curriculum beyond that of teacher education.
An article in the ragingchickenpress by Elizabeth also detailed the loss of the playground that was used in the former ELC program now called the Early Learning Community which operates differently now. Elizabeth said, KU’s $29 million dollar hidden surplus, (reported previously in Raging Chicken Press), along with support from alumni families ready, willing and excited to help, could have easily maintained this important program.” (Sica, 2011)
This is ultimately why there should be a re-opening of the ELC and a new playground this decade when COVID-19 is no longer a threat and on campus sessions can resume again. The idea of a select committee overseeing this happen again should be a real possibility to making sure that Kutztown stays golden.
