Synopsis: 17yr old y/n falls for 22yr old Rafe, what could possibly go wrong…
A/N: series was inspired by the song ‘all too well’ by Taylor swift, the age difference isn’t as drastic as it is in the song, but the lesson Taylor learned vs the lesson the reader will learn is basically the same.
Parties were never really your thing, which was rare for a seventeen year old living in the outer banks.
Your parents were divorced and your mom remarried to a Kook, leaving your dad behind, who was a Pogue so, you got a taste of life on both sides of the islands, which meant more party invitations, that you never went to.
It wasn’t like you were some prude that thought you were too good to go to parties, you just didn’t want to be alone. Due to you being from both sides of the island you felt too Pogue to be a Kook and too Kook to be a Pogue. That was until you met Harlow, and Saylor.
They took you under their wing.
Harlow had dirty blonde, almost brown hair just passed her shoulders with fairly tanned skin due to her constantly at the beach. Saylor had carmel skin with loose highlighted curls that fell just at her waist.
They didn’t seem like the average stuck up Kooks, and that’s what you loved about them, They were far from judgmental.
Harlow, and Saylor begged you to go to parties with them, and tonight you finally, hesitantly, agreed.
This was your first real party.
You all got a drink from the keg before Harlow gestured to you, and Saylor for you guys to follow her over to her boyfriend, Topper.
You had never truly met Topper before. One reason being, Harlow just recently began taking him serious, and the other reason being you just rarely went out.
You of course knew who Topper was, and had seen him before, but you’d never been properly introduced.
Topper was standing against the wall nursing a drink with two guys standing next to him.
you were mesmerized by the tall, blond haired, guy beside him. he was wearing a black collared shirt, that hugged him in all the right places, with a backwards hat, where you could see some of his dirty blond strands peeking out.
You didn’t miss the way he eyed you either, sipping on his drink as if he were trying to hide behind it so he could continue eyeing you in secret.
You then walked up to them, hand in hand with Saylor, while nursing your own drink.
“Guys, this is y/n,” Harlow introduced you, pushing you in front of her.
You broke free of Saylors clutch, softly waving at Topper and his friends.
“hey,” You politely smiled.
she gestured towards her boyfriend. “Y/n, this is Topper, obviously” then pointed to one of the guys standing next to her boyfriend. “Kelce,” Then, she finally pointed towards the guy you had been eyeing. “And.. this is Rafe.”
Rafe? As in Rafe Cameron? The Kook king?
You had heard all about Rafe. Although he had a terrible reputation, a lot of girls wanted him, and after seeing him close up, in person, for yourself you no longer questioned why their standards sat so low.
They all greeted you back, as you gave a soft smile to them, before getting pulled away by Saylor.
I wanna dance.” She whined.
“Wait, wait. let’s get another drink.” You said dragging her over to the keg.
She followed behind you, waiting impatiently for you to get your drink.
Harlow had stayed with her boyfriend, and his friends while you, and Saylor wandered off to the dance floor. Once again, you hadn’t missed the way Rafe eyed you as you danced. You were almost nervous from the way he watched you as you swayed along to the music with your best friend.
Next time you looked over at Rafe he was motioning towards the coffee table that sat in the living room, to Topper and Kelce. The table didn’t sit far from you.
They both moved in sync as they all sat on the couch at the coffee table. Rafe pulled out a familiar looking white substance, a card, and a dollar bill. You don’t know why you were surprised to see Kooks doing coke. You stopped swaying to the music when you saw Harlow land in her boyfriends lap, clearly already drunk. You dragged Saylor over to the coffee table and sat down on the other couch that sat across from Harlow, Topper, Rafe, and Kelce.
Rafe quickly eyed you before leaning his head down to snort the prepared substance through the dollar from off the table.
“Here,” he jerked his head upwards gesturing for Topper to grab the dollar from his hand.
And so he did.
“I wanna try some,” Saylor blurted.
You jerked your head towards her, eyeing her down.
“Alright,” Rafe handed her the dollar and made a line for her. “Only one, unless you got money.”
Saylor stood up to have a clear shot at the white substance.
You had no clue how you were getting home. Harlow was drunk, nodding off slowly on her boyfriends shoulder and Saylor was drunk and now high.
A few hours had passed, a couple more drinks had gone down the hatch, and a few more lines had been snorted before everyone finally called it a night and headed out.
Toppers house was right down the road from where the party was located so, he told Harlow, Kelce, Saylor, you, and Rafe, that you all could crash at his place until you were sobered up, and although you knew your mom would kill you for not being home when you said you would be, she would be even more mad to find out you were drunk and had someone who was also drunk driving you around.
You texted her, letting her know you’d be staying the night with Harlow, and that you’d be home tomorrow, which wasn’t unusual, you did that a lot so it was pretty believable.
You and Saylor shared the guest room bed, while Harlow went to sleep in Toppers room, and Kelce, and Rafe took the couches.
You pulled back the blanket to get in the bed next to Saylor, who was already passed out by the time you’d gotten into bed.
A few hours had passed, and you were still on your phone in bed.
You couldn’t sleep.
Sleeping in a guys house you’d just properly met didn’t exactly help you sleep, but it was better than going home, and possibly getting grounded for being as drunk as you were.
You tore the covers off you, and walked out of the guest bedroom.
All the lights were off downstairs except for the dimmed kitchen light, where you saw a tall figure standing. It wasn’t until he opened the fridge door you could see it was none other than Rafe.
He pulled out a water bottle as if this were his house; which wasn’t weird considering this was his best friends home.
He turned his head when he noticed you in his peripheral vision.
“Want one?” He questioned, holding up the water bottle in his hand.
“Um. Yeah, yeah.” You nodded
This was the first time he’d really spoken to you all night. If he hadn’t been eyeing you the whole night you would’ve thought you were invisible.
He nodded, grabbing another water out of the fridge as you walked over to sit on a stool that was placed beneath the island counter.
He handed it to you, then stood at the kitchen island on the opposite of you, nursing the water in his hand.
One of his hands was placed on the counter as he stared at you for a brief moment.
“So...why haven’t I ever seen you around or like…with Harlow, and Saylor?” He finally broke the awkward silence.
You hesitated to answer for a second.
“Oh. Well, I dunno. Never really went out with them before.” You shrugged. “Not a party person.”
He stayed silent, but nodded taking another sip of his water.
“Couldn’t sleep or…?” You questioned, trying to make conversation.
“Yeah,” he dragged out. “Kinda tryin’ to sober myself up.” He chuckled.
“Same, same.”
You looked back down at your phone that you had in your hand when there was nothing but silence for a second.
Rafe looked around before speaking again. “I know something that might help,”
“Hm?” You looked up.
“Going for a swim,” he smirked. “You down?”
“Yeah. why not.” You chuckled before shrugging.
You both walked over towards the sliding doors that lead to Toppers back patio.
Rafe slid them open, and let you step outside, with him following right behind you.
Living in the outer banks, it wasn’t unusual to have a bathing suit already under your clothing in the summer.
But Rafe still did a double take when he saw you about to remove your clothing, like he’d expected you to swim fully clothed.
you slid off your jean shorts, then proceeded to remove your crop top, revealing your bikini that had been hidden underneath your clothing.
Rafe took off his black collared shirt, revealing his chiseled body, then removed his khaki shorts.
“No swim trunks?” You chuckled.
All he was left in was his boxers now.
“I didn’t bring any.” He frowned while shrugging, before diving into the water.
You followed after him.
You both emerged from the water at the same time, smiling.
“Water feels…nice.” You said as you were treading the water.
“Yeah,” He chuckled a bit at your legs kicking underwater to keep your head from dipping back into the water.
About twenty minutes had passed, and more awkward conversations had been had.
You were now both sitting on the side of the pool, with your feet still in the water.
“Y’know — you’re pretty interesting, y/n.”
That had caught you a little off guard.
“Whys that?” You chuckled, looking down at your feet, kicking the water.
“I dunno. You’re kinda mysterious.” You could feel him staring at you for a moment. “You don’t talk much. And when you do talk, you don’t say a whole lot.”
You looked up, and over to him, and shrugged. “Hmm. I guess.”
“See! That’s what I mean.” He looked up at you, dipping his hand into the pool water to splash it towards you.
“I don’t know what to say!” You threw your hands up in defense.
You were both laughing at this point.
But Rafe’s previous words still lingered in your mind.
