Ahh maybe I should write something gay to celebrate... But I want to make a little bit for Dickkory week, which is decidedly not lesbian. I’m probably not going to be doing the whole week, bc I don’t really have anything written. I’ll just get a little in...
I’ll post the next bit of my raeterra!

“More Change”
Summary: Raven comforts Beast Boy after he finds out some terrible news. Rating: T Pairing(s): implied BBTerra, BBRae friendship, RaeTerra friendship Genre: Hurt/comfort
This takes place a long time after the episode “Things Change.”
-------------------------
It was a day that started like any other. Raven woke up, she made herself some tea, and she started her morning meditation in the common room all before anyone else awoke. Robin was the first to walk to the kitchen for breakfast, followed closely by Starfire. Cyborg arrived a little later and, as usual, Beast Boy arrived later after that, having some toast and juice. Eventually she found herself reading quietly in her room, her blankets wrapped around her shoulders. It was calm and warm, something she appreciated while trying to immerse herself in a fictional world. Everything was normal, everything was fine.
Except soon, she wouldn’t be able to say that anymore.
Soon she felt as if her heart was gone. With no warning, no previous signs, she felt as if all that was inside her was a black, gaping hole that sucked in all her emotion - leaving her a blank, lifeless husk. She gasped, her book slipping from her hands in surprise.
Who? She asked herself, closing her eyes to try and focus in on this terrible feeling. Or, rather, this terrible lack of feeling. Who is it?
Beast Boy. She wished she could say she was surprised; she knew Beast Boy suffered from depression. She could feel the days when he was better and when he was worse, but usually on his worse days she can feel a gradual decline in his mood. She had never, ever felt his mood drop so suddenly before, and it never hit that low, either. Something was wrong.
Without another thought she opened a portal right to the outside of his room, but once she was there she hesitated. Normally whenever she felt like Beast Boy was too low, or he felt consistently low for a few days, she alerted Cyborg so he could try and cheer him up. She felt like it was the only thing she could do… But with this, this nothing, she felt like she had to take immediate action. She took a deep breath and knocked, praying he’d answer.
She waited three, silent, heart clenching seconds before she heard shuffling from inside his room. He heart pounded twice the tempo of his slow footsteps until the door finally opened, the green boy standing in front of her with his hand on the doorframe and wearing the most neutral expression she had ever seen from him. Usually his face was incredibly expressive, betraying any emotion he had almost instantly, but right now it was a lifeless mask.
“Hi,” he greeted when she ended up just staring at him for a few seconds. “Need something?”
Raven closed her mouth, feeling embarrassed when she realized she had let it hang open. She didn't know what to say.
His teeth clenched, and she was a little relieved when he felt angry instead of empty. “What? What do you want?”
She swallowed nervously, trying to not let his temper get to her. “Beast Boy… is something wrong?”
“Gee, don’t you already fucking know?” he snapped, his hand gripping the side of the doorway tightly. “Or else you wouldn’t be here, would you?”
That hit her hard. She knew he was just angry, but she didn’t want him to think she would only be by him if something was wrong. They were friends, and she enjoyed spending time with him. “Gar, please -”
“Don’t,” he growled at her, looking to the side. “Don’t look at me like that.”
She clenched her own teeth now as she stared at him, feeling a little angry herself. “Promise me you’ll tell Victor about whatever’s happening.”
Garfield didn’t say anything. He just continued staring off into space, and she could only hope he was thinking over her words.
“... Can I tell you about it, first?” he finally spoke, surprising her a little.
“Of course.”
Garfield nodded and walked back inside his room first, grabbing a newspaper. She creased her eyebrows curiously as he walked past her, leading her through the Tower until they wound up outside, sitting on the rocks and staring out into the ocean. Once there, he handed her the newspaper - with no eye contact and no words.
She took it gingerly, watching as he brought his legs up against his chest and buried his face against his knees. He wasn't empty anymore, but the aching sadness filling up inside him wasn't a great replacement. She turned to inspect the newspaper, dread filling her as she wondered what she would find.
She started skimming through everything, trying to discern what news could have possibly upset him. Most of these stories were normal; an article about a recent parade, a local business owner sharing their success story, a restaurant in hot water for health code violations - she couldn't see any of these affecting him so deeply.
“Check the obituaries,” he told her quietly. His cheek was pressed against his knee as he regarded her with wet eyes.
She felt a little guilty knowing he had been crying and she hadn't comforted him somehow, but she quickly looked back to the newspaper, opening to the page he had specified. The obituaries… that meant a death had upset him. Her mind immediately fixing on one person. What was her name now? Elizabeth, Beast Boy had said she went by Elizabeth now. She remembered because he had complained how that name didn't fit her at all, and she had to agree.
But maybe they were just biased to Terra.
Once she knew what she was looking for, she regrettably found it immediately.
Elizabeth Wilson 1991-2007 Here's to a girl who laughed, played, and worked hard - in that order. She left us too soon, and she will be remembered fondly by everyone at St. Olga’s Academy. On Monday, October 8th, Elizabeth was found by her roommate fully clothed in their bathtub with a gunshot wound in the front of her head. A simple note reading “I’m sorry” lay on the sink, and the weapon that took her life lying on the floor. No one could have predicted this end for her. Her friends say Elizabeth always talked about becoming a geologist one day, and was always “dragging [them] to the beach” to find rocks. They like to think that she’s still finding new and better rocks now that she has left this world.
The rest of the article detailed where her wake and funeral were to be held, so Raven folded the newspaper in half before turning to look at her friend. “Beast Boy -”
“Don’t.” His voice cracked, his face turning to bury itself against his knees again. “I don’t wanna talk right now.”
She closed her mouth, but she couldn’t do nothing. She scooted closer to him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders in a tight embrace. It seemed to be what he needed, as he turned into her, wrapping his arms around her waist and clutching at her cloak. He hid his face into the crook of her neck, and she closed her eyes as she felt hot tears drip onto her skin.
As they sat there together, she tried to focus on absorbing his more negative emotions. He felt… terrible, that was the best way to put it. Amidst his grief and anger was guilt, as if he felt like he was responsible for her death. That was what she wanted to take away more than anything - that guilt. How could he think he had anything to do with her decision? She had cut him out of her life, there was nothing he could have done.
“Stop, Raven,” Garfield whispered, lifting his head up. He just frowned at her, tears still running down his cheeks.
She glanced away, not wanting to see it. “Stop what?”
He sighed, reaching up to wipe at his face. “Stop taking my emotions. I’ll just make more.”
Raven chewed at her lip before leaning in to hug him tight again, this time with her being the one to hide her face against his neck. He lifted his arms to rest on her back, his hands still warm despite the coldness he felt inside. “I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“It’s not your fault.”
“It’s not yours, either.”
He didn’t say anything in response, so Raven just tightened her hold.
“It’s not.”
Garfield sighed again, squeezing her before reaching up to grasp her shoulders, gently tugging her away from him. He stared into her eyes, his face creased with pain. “Do you know why I wanted to talk with you? Before anyone else?”
“No,” she whispered, searching his eyes as if she could find the answer there.
“Because…” The tears started to fall again, but he didn’t look away this time. “Because even though we cared about her differently, you were the only one who cared about her as much as I did.”
Raven felt the way her heart constricted, like thorns were sticking itself inside. She wished she could have blamed that feeling on Garfield, but this was entirely her own. “That’s not true,” she told him.
“Yes, it is.” He scoffed, a wry smile appearing on his lips, his fingers digging desperately into her shoulders. “You can’t tell me it isn’t. When the others found out she betrayed us…” he paused, that memory still painful for him even after all these years. “They just… they didn’t seem to care.”
“They did,” Raven argued. She could feel how everyone had felt during that time; Terra had affected some worse than others, but they were all hurt by her in some way.
“Well, it didn’t look like it.” He clenched his teeth, speaking low as if he might burst into tears at any moment. “They got over it so quickly… Robin never looked bothered - he went back to normal the next day like nothing ever happened, like she didn’t even exist. Cyborg talked about her a little, but… I don’t know, it felt like he almost expected this to happen; like he wasn’t surprised at all she turned out bad. Starfire was sad for a few weeks, but even she…” he closed his eyes, a lone tear sliding down his already damp cheeks. “She got over it. She went back to her bubbly self. And when Terra sacrificed herself and turned to stone, they all got over that even faster. But you… I could always tell - you were hurting, just like I was. You kept thinking about her, just like me.”
“Beast Boy.” She reached up to wipe his tear away, her own eyes starting to feel damp.
He lifted his hand to hers, holding it against his cheek as he took a shaky breath. “You were the only one who felt as angry as I did.”
“How could you tell?” she asked. She didn’t think she had acted any differently. She was used to people leaving her, one way or another, but with Terra… it really had cut her deep. She had truly believed Terra to be her friend, to be all of their friends, so when she left… she tried to act normally, but she’d be lying if she said it didn’t still bother her. And now with her just… gone...
Well, she’d be lying if she said that didn’t affect her deeply, either.
“I just could.” He opened his eyes, trying to give that grin he always gave when he was about to tell a joke. He probably didn’t realize how flat it seemed. “I can read you like a book, Rae.”
She offered him a small smile, since part of her did appreciate his sentiment. It was just that most of her was too consumed with the news of Terra’s death and Garfield’s despondent spirit to really find any amusement in his words.
Soon both of their smiles fell, and they simply went back to hugging each other. When words failed, hugs always seemed to be the next best thing.
“I don’t want to tell the others yet,” he whispered.
“You don’t have to,” Raven whispered back.
“... I don’t want to be alone tonight.”
She squeezed him tightly. “Sleep in my room.”
He laughed softly, but the end of it broke into a small sob. “Thank you.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About an hour later, they both felt ready to go back into the Tower. They tried to act normally, not wanting to alert the other Titans to the tragedy that was currently consuming them. Not today; they wanted some time to think about it themselves first.
Night seemed to come quickly, and once everyone else retired to their rooms Beast Boy and Raven snuck up to hers.
“You’re not going to change?” she asked him when he immediately fell onto her bed, facedown into the pillow.
“What’s the point?”
She frowned and went over to him, sitting at the edge of the bed and digging her hands into his hair, gently playing with the green locks. “... The point is to feel fresh.”
He sighed. “Well, you petting me doesn’t really make me want to move.”
She smiled softly and took her hand out. “I’m going to change. You do the same, okay?”
“Okay.” He turned onto his side, staring up at her in a way that kept her sitting on the edge of the bed. “Don’t you just wear another leotard to bed?”
“Yes.”
“Then why do you change at all?”
“Stop stalling.”
He smiled softly and started to get up, mumbling, “You know, I usually sleep naked -”
“Not tonight you’re not.”
He laughed, actually laughed. It was weak, and brief, but it was the first genuine laugh she’s heard from him all day and she was taking it. He made his way out of her room, so she quickly grabbed a new leotard and disappeared into her bathroom to change.
It wasn’t long before they laid under the covers together, Raven curled up against his front and Beast Boy’s arm draped over her waist. They both needed the contact; the longer Raven had to think over Terra’s death, the worse she felt, and Garfield wasn’t faring much better.
“She could have done great things,” Beast Boy whispered into the darkness, his hand starting to stroke Raven’s back idly.
“I know,” Raven whispered back, cuddling closer against him.
“Even as a geologist,” he added. “I bet she would have found a whole new species of rock or something.”
“I think those are called classifications.”
“Whatever. She would have found it.”
Raven hummed in agreement, not knowing what else to say. When she started to feel his guilt creeping into him, that was when she spoke. “It’s not your fault, Gar.”
“... I monitored her, Raven,” he whispered back. “I should have… I should have noticed she was… sad.”
Raven unfolded her top arm to wrap around him, clutching the back of his shirt. “Just because you monitored her didn’t mean you could see everything. And I’m sure her friends at school are telling themselves the same thing.”
“I could have helped her,” Garfield insisted, not able to let this go. “I could have been her best friend -”
“She didn’t let you be her friend, remember?”
“That’s because I was pushing her too hard -”
“Gar,” Raven sat up, frowning at him. “There was nothing you could have done.”
His bottom lip quivered, his eyes shutting tight. He flopped onto his back, so Raven laid right on top of him, resting her head on his chest. He was trying to accept her words, she could feel it, but he still wanted to blame himself. He’d rather blame himself than her, after all.
“Raven?” his voice cracked again.
“Yes?”
“Can you…” he gently wrapped his arms around her again, as if she were a teddy bear. “Help me tell the others tomorrow?”
“Of course.”
“... Raven?”
“Yes?”
“You’re…” he swallowed. “I know you’re all about controlling your emotions and stuff, but… you’re sad, too, right?”
She frowned and lifted herself up again, staring into the shine of his eyes in the dark. “I thought you could read me like a book?”
He sniffled and closed his eyes again. “... I guess it’d just be nice to see someone else cry, too.”
Raven felt her insides twist around. She couldn’t… cry. Who knew how her powers would react to that? But… but if that would really make him feel better, help him feel a little less alone...
She took a deep breath, focusing on his sadness. She let it fill her, let it clash with her own until it formed a raging sea, a hollow, terrifying sea that sank anything that dared cross its waters, including her. She felt her body start shaking as tears started to fall from her own eyes, her lungs gasping for breath and her powers causing several objects in her room to stay suspended in the air.
“Raven?” He sounded surprised, his arms tightening around her. “Are you - are you actually crying?”
She tried to speak, but all that came out was a breathy sob, so she just nodded against him.
“Oh, wow, I…” He rubbed at her arm, trying to comfort her as more tears formed in his own eyes as well. “I didn’t think you’d actually…” he sniffled, his voice growing hoarse. “... Thank you.”
She nodded again, trying to breathe a bit normally so she could say one last thing.
“I miss her, too.”
Beast Boy smiled a little, closing his eyes tight and relishing in the way the hot tears slid down the sides of his face.
“I know you do.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Below is a different direction I was gonna take before I decided against it.)
Soon she felt as if her heart was gone. With no warning, no previous signs, she felt as if all that was inside her was a black, gaping hole that sucked in all her emotion - leaving her a blank, emotionless husk. She gasped for breath, her body dropping to the floor in shock.
“Raven?” Robin was the first to ask, muting the TV as he regarded her with concern. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” That’s what was wrong, that she felt nothing. Or, rather, someone in this room was feeling absolutely nothing.
Almost immediately, she turned around, searching for Beast Boy. While everyone else was relaxing in the common room, he was still in the kitchen, enjoying some toast. He caught her eyes as soon as she found him, and the look on his face… she had never seen him look so neutral. Usually his face was incredibly expressive, betraying any emotion he had almost instantly, but right now it was a lifeless mask.
His teeth clenched before he turned into a bird and flew off. She wasted no time in floating after him as quickly as possible, ignoring everyone else’s questions. Once she arrived in the hallway she called his name, probably sounding more demanding than she meant to. She couldn’t help it, she was worried. Incredibly worried.
She knew Beast Boy suffered from depression. She could feel the days when he was better and when he was worse, but usually on his worse days she can feel a gradual decline in his mood. She had never, ever felt his mood drop so suddenly before, and it never hit that low, either. Something was wrong.
“Beast Boy!” she called again, sounding a bit more frantic. She jumped when he grew rapidly bigger right in front of her. He must have been some type of insect before he decided to show himself, and this time she could clearly see his emotions on his face. He was angry.
“Did you have to look right at me?!” he yelled at her, walking forward aggressively. She instinctively floated back, his anger fusing dangerously with the guilt she now had from his question. “It’s bad enough with you knowing - you think I want everyone else to know something’s wrong?!”
Raven felt her back flatten against the hallway. “I’m sorry -”
“Oh, shut up!” Beast Boy practically growled. When he noticed how she was trembling slightly, he seemed to calm down and backed off. He groaned loudly and lifted his hands up to pull at his hair, shutting his eyes tight. “Great, just great. Don’t you and Cy have some silent agreement or something for when I feel like this?!”
Raven tried to relax, her mouth dry as she croaked out a small “Yes.” It was true; whenever she felt like Beast Boy was too low, or he felt consistently low for a few days, she alerted Cyborg so he could try and cheer him up. She felt like it was the only thing she could do…
“So why did you -!” He couldn’t articulate what he was trying to say, his teeth clenching in frustration. He dropped his hands to his sides, but his hair still stuck up from where he had pulled. “You fucking fell and looked right at me! What the hell!”
“I’m sorry!” Raven was finding her voice through her own anger. “I’m sorry for being worried!”
“Well hide it better next time!” Beast Boy yelled back irrationally.
Raven took a deep breath. She shouldn’t be mad at him; he was just lashing out from… whatever had gotten him so down in the first place. “Gar,” she whispered his human name, hoping to calm him down a little. “Please, tell me what’s wrong.”
His fists clenched at his sides, and for a second Raven thought he was just going to continue yelling at her or, even worse, punch her, though she knew he would never do that. She almost would have preferred he punch her rather than tears to start forming in his eyes, rather than his face scrunching with sorrow while his lips wobbled as he tried not to sob.
When he moved in to hug her, she returned it without any hesitation, wrapping her arms tight around his back as he buried his face into the crook of her neck and started crying. His own arms were a bit too tight around her waist, but she didn’t mind. He needed this, he needed this for whatever reason.
She was grateful none of the other Titans had followed after her; she doubted he would have stayed in the Tower if he had to talk in front of an audience. She held him there for what had to be at least five minutes until his cries quieted, his body stilling against her. He sniffled and finally mumbled an explanation into her neck.
“She died.”
Raven frowned and squeezed him gently, almost afraid to ask, “Who?”
Garfield’s arms tightened even further around her, his voice strained and cracking as he said her name:
“Terra.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next few days passed. That was all Raven could say about them - they came and went, nothing getting better as they did. Garfield’s emotions seemed to only range between sadness and anger these days, even when he was smiling. And at night, she felt that gaping nothingness again.
(This is where I decided “I want a different direction,” but I still liked where this was going, too. Thanks for reading.)
RaeTerra Week Day 4: Secrets/Teamwork
Summary: AU where Terra decides she can’t go through with killing any of the Titans before betrayal even happened, and tries to escape Slade.
On Ao3 HERE (x)
On fanfiction.net HERE (x)
Terra ran. Her legs brushed past each other, and it hurt as the skin slapped against each other, but she just kept running. She felt hot tears cover her cheeks, and the saltiness burned, but she just kept running. One leg after the other, until she was back at Titans tower.
“Dear girl, stop right there.” Terra heard a man’s voice strictly demanding. Her legs wobbled for a moment, a rush of fear cascading through her. It seemed impossible that he had really caught up to her with the speeds she was running, but he had. He always did.
As Terra slowed down, she felt a rush of memories fly through her brain. Police, and even sometimes normal citizens, chasing her like this, their firm footsteps smacking the ground. Everytime, they wanted something -sometimes even her life- to make up for what she’d done. Luckily for her, she was a pretty good runner. Quickly, she shook her legs back from being wobbly, and made sure that they just kept running, as fast as they could.
“Dear girl, we had a deal.” The man reminded her, sounding only a little over 10 feet behind her. This made her want to freeze, the fear taking over her. But she ignored this, continuing to run, like she had all those other times when people were chasing her. And so far, it had always been the thing that saved her from the chasers, whoever they may be.
Unlike most times, though, Terra was sure she had done nothing wrong… right? He had been the one that wanted her to kill her friends, to betray the only people -other than himself- who had ever shown her kindness. At the same time, though, she had made a deal. Even if then she had felt upset and betrayed by her friends in the instance, even if she hadn’t been in her right mind, she had made the deal. And he had already gone through with his part, so shouldn’t she go through with hers?
Even as she thought about this, though, her legs just kept moving. The idea of killing her friends -particularly Raven- was just too much. She pushed herself forward, even using her powers to create an Earth path when water got in her way, increasing her speed by the second, until she saw something familiar.
“Titan Tower…!” She called out in relief. Her breath was heavy, causing her to make loud, visible, sighs as she finally allowed herself to slide to a stop. She slowly turned around, figuring that by then, Slade surely must have given up. But to her dismay, the man stood right behind her. Her eyes stared up at him, panic filling her expression.
“Dear girl, what were you doing…?” Slade questioned suspiciously. “You know, there’s really no reason to run….” His voice was soft, but somehow sharp at the same time. Terra’s eyes were still locked in a glare, too terra-fied to even blink. As if that could somehow calm her nerves, he brushed his hand through her hair, making her wince.
“I….” Terra stuttered, panic overwhelming her ability to speak. She took one big breath, before slowly letting out the truth. “I… couldn’t… do it.” She was almost frozen, her eyes not moving a centimeter, even as her mouth moved to speak. Slade narrowed his one eye at her, an obvious sign of his dissatisfaction.
“Little girl… Sweet little girl….” He slowly shook his head as he cooed, as if about to teach her some kind of life lesson. He gently put his gloved hand onto her head, patting it to remind her of how small -and helpless- she really was. After being open for far too long, she let her eyes finally close as he messed up her hair with his pats. It felt almost like she was closing them in some kind of pain, a pain that was more complex than the kind that you get when someone hits you. Even though she should be running or getting her friends, the pain was too strong to let her move from her spot.
From not far away, two violet eyes were peering over. Raven had just so happened to look out the window of her room, quickly spotting the two of them. Seeing that Terra needed help, she sprung from her seat and ran outside, hurrying towards where the two were standing.
“Leave. Her. Alone!” Raven called as she made her way there. She looked towards them, quickly noticing that neither had even heard her calls, the words being blown away by the island air. For a second, she listened to what they were talking about, quickly deciding that there might be a benefit to them not knowing she was there. She stopped in her tracks, making herself completely silent as she spied.
“We made a deal, Terra. You do realize that it doesn’t matter whether or not you can or want to kill them, you have to at the very least try.” Slade spoke to her slowly, ignoring the fact that she was a teenager, not a toddler. The words seemed to seep into Terra’s brain so deeply, forcing her to pay attention to him as if he would quiz her later.
“I know,” Terra responded, pausing for a moment before she said her next line, “But… the Titans… they just…..” She rubbed at her eyes, wiping away the tears that were still strolling down her cheeks.
“They what, dear girl?” Slade asked, not even waiting for her to finish her sentence, “Whatever you’re saying better not be anything relating to betraying me. We’re working together to kill the Titans, Terra. I’m on your side… And honestly, I don’t think you want it any other way… especially with someone as powerful as me.” He narrowed his eyes again, critically staring into her until he got his response. But to his surprise, the only response he got was from somewhere else entirely.
“You’re working with Slade?!” Raven exclaimed angrily. She stared at Terra accusingly. “I knew I shouldn’t have trusted you. I sensed something like this was going to happen! But I still let you fooled me… how could I have been so stupid? How could I have let myself care for someone like you?” Her powers began to leak, coming towards the already-frightened Terra in front of her. Realizing this, Raven quickly began mumbling meditation chants until she had it under control again.
“Raven…” Terra stuttered, feeling the need to call the girl’s name once again. “Raven, I’m sorry… I was just about to try to back out of it, already, but…” Her parsing was weird, making the entire process of saying words take much longer than it should.
“How am I supposed to even believe you?!” Raven snapped, “How am I supposed to know this isn’t another trap? This entire thing could easily be a complex trap by the two of you! Anything could be a trap…!” She squeezed her eyes shut, pulling at her own hair in frustration.
“Please! I know I seem untrustworthy, but you’ve gotta believe me!” Terra yelled desperately. Raven, her eyes still squeezed shut, was attempting to hold back the tears that wanted to roll down her cheeks. Despite this, she opened her eyes and just stared at Terra, searching for something that would prove what she was saying was right.
“If you really do love me, Terra, help me defeat Slade.” She stated, trying to make it sound like some kind of challenge, “Beat him up hard, with me, and maybe, just maybe, I’ll believe you.” Raven looked back at Terra, hoping so hard that she would listen. Terra nodded, about to throw a rock at Slade, when Slade’s words made her hesitate.
“Dear girl, you know this is wrong.” He reminded her, as if by fighting him, he was just as much of a victim as Raven. “We had a deal. I took care of you, even when the Titans didn’t. Like when that stupid Beast boy kid told your secret….” Terra looked up at him, taking in and considering her options. She looked back and forth from him and Raven, desperately hoping that she’d just suddenly know what to do.
Raven looked at her heartbrokenly, “Terra, you’ve already done stuff wrong. Just do the right thing now.” She attempted to persuade her. After realizing the more stark statements weren’t working, she sighed, knowing that even if she did feel betrayed, it was about time she admitted her feelings. “Please, Terra… I… I love you.”
Terra looked back at her, a smile growing on her face, “Raven, I love you, too… and you’re right, that’s more important than anything Slade has ever done for me.” She scowled at Slade, showing him she had made her decision. “It’s about time someone put you in your place.” Terra threw a rock at him to prove she was serious.
Raven quickly ran over to join Terra in her rock throwing, and the two couldn’t help but laugh as Slade fell unconscious from all the rocks being thrown in his face. Once he was on the ground, without a chance of defeating them, they paused what they were doing to high-five.
“Geez, one of those rocks you threw at him was huge!” Terra commented, snickering.
“Yeah,” Raven snickered with her, but slowly stopped to start a more serious mood. “Terra, about what I said earlier… I, um, actually didn’t mean I just loved you as friends….” She looked down to the floor nervously, wondering how Terra would react.
“I know,” Terra responded, bringing back the smiley mood, “And I said I loved you too, didn’t I?” She laughed, attempting to ease up how tense Raven was. Raven smiled back at her.
“You… you meant it that way, too?” She clarified hopefully. Terra nodded, making Raven stutter for a second, unsure what to do, or how much to celebrate. Seeing this, Terra made the initiative herself to pull Raven into a small hug, careful to let Raven pull away if she didn’t want to. After a second, though, Raven even hugged back a little.
“With how close you got to betraying me, we have some trust to re-earn, and that might take a while.” Raven reminded Terra pessimistically. She shook her head for a second, but then brought her smile right back on, “But that doesn’t mean it’ll take forever.”
Terra smiled even bigger and nodded. The two sat down, leaning on each other’s shoulders. As the moon filled the sky, the two just watched, side-by-side, waiting for the next day of opportunity to come.
Darkness surrounded Raven. Almost every sense of hers felt dull and numb. The dark, eerie, vibe of her room made her eyes blink, desperately trying to see light, instead of just dark shadows everywhere. Her ears searched for a sound, to distract from the utter silence that surrounded her. If she was deaf, mute, or blind, she probably wouldn’t have been able to even tell. The lack of, well, much of anything would make most people distraught -especially someone like Starfire or Beast boy- but to Raven, it was home.
Just a moment before, she was outside, in the blinding sunlight. Her senses may be a teeny bit tingled by absolutely nothing, but what happens to everything around you when there is an abundance of light feels even worse to her. The sounds of laughter and grunts would overwhelm her ears, and her eyes would blink rapidly as she tries to see through the huge amount of sunlight. After something like that, she was more than happy to be in the empty vacuum that is her room.
Every time they went out into the boldness of the outside, she always ran back into her room the second it was over. She’d always sigh as she turns the light on just enough to be able to make out the words in her book. It happened every time, and most of the time, the Titan’s wouldn’t bother her. Occasionally, Beast boy would insist on trying to get her to play stankball -something that she would never agree to right after having to deal with Jump City’s crowds- but other than that, she was uninterrupted.
It was just another time, and just like every time, she expected to spend the rest of the day in her room… alone. And that was exactly what happened. Even the next day, her routine persisted. At most, maybe in the morning she would play a short game with her friends (if she felt up to it), but every afternoon was always spent alone.
A week later, she had gotten her morning tea. She didn’t expect to do much more than that outside her room that day, because crimes had been slowly down recently, and she hardly went outside for anything other than that.
Running into any of her friends could sometimes be just so awkward when she was going to spend the rest of the day in her room, so she figured today was the kind of day she might just try to avoid it all together. Her soft, fabricy, blue, shoes hardly made anything more than an inaudible scrape on the floor as she snuck back over to the kitchen for a tea refill.
To her surprise, a friend of hers was in the kitchen. Terra. Her blonde hair was tossed over her shoulder, like she had just done one of those hairflips that celebrities sometimes do. She was sitting on a stool at the bar, peacefully glancing into space. Raven eyed her, surprised that she wasn’t the only one down there. All the rest of the Titans had been playing a game in Starfire’s room, as far as Raven knew. But there she was, sitting so peacefully, almost like a princess.
There was something about the quietness that Raven liked. It made her feel welcome much more than even an outright “welcome” party could. So despite everything Raven figured she’d do in the situation, she spoke to her.
“Terra?” Raven called softly, her heart fluttering as she said the name. Once, when she was going to sleep, she asked herself which of her friend’s names was prettiest. She had easily thought of Terra’s. Now that she thought about it, she actually thought about Terra a lot when she was going to sleep. Thinking about this made her pause for a second, but seeing that Terra wasn’t responding, she spoke again. “Hello?”
Terra looked back at her, startled. She blushed nervously, but a smile appeared just as she did so. “Uh… Hey, Raven.” She attempted to act cool, trying to hide the way her heart was thumping on the inside.
“I thought you were in Starfire’s room. Playing the game.” Raven stated. She pointed up towards the hallway that led to all their bedrooms. Terra paused for a second, but then shook her head.
“I was… but Beast boy and Robin started arguing about what the rules to the game are, so….” Terra stuttered out. She shrugged, trying to continue acting as cool and casual as possible. But underneath it, her heart was still beating loudly as she stared at Raven, right into her beautiful eyes. Feeling uncomfortable about the strong eye contact, Terra quickly looked down nervously. “It was just getting a little tiring.”
“I know what you mean. I just don’t understand how it took you that long to get tired.” Raven joked sarcastically. Terra laughed with her, a sincere giggle sputtering out. Feeling it get a little too loud for the small joked Raven made, she bit her tongue and forced herself to not get hysteric. As she did, a silence fell between the two of them. They both sat there, feeling happy enough to just be near each other, having this weird but nice conversation.
The silence grew on, slowly becoming a little too awkward. Raven looked up at Terra again, slowly waving. “Well, I was about to get to the climax in my book, so I should probably go back to my room and keep reading.” She stated, slowly turning around to leave. Her soft shoes slid across the floor as she began tip-toeing back. But just as she was about to step into the hallway, Raven heard Terra’s voice behind her.
“Wait… Can I come with you?” Terra asked, just loud enough for Raven to hear. Raven spun on her feet, looking back at the blonde-haired girl behind her. Despite everything she figured she’d do in this situation, there was something about Terra that made her nod. Terra ran after her, a bright smile on her face. A bright smile that stayed on, even when they came into Raven’s room of darkness.
Raven always thought she hated bright things, but there was something about that smile that was just the right amount of bright. And as much as she hated bright things, she felt herself smile a bright smile, as well.
Raven and Terra read the book together, excitement filling both of their heads. What made the adventure even more exciting was just the fact that instead of being in these situations all alone, they had a friend: each other.
Just as they finished up another story, Terra collapsed into Raven’s lap, smiling even brighter than when they started.
Terra’s heart thumped, and as she listened, she realized it was the exact same pattern, and held the exact same feeling as when the Titans first accepted her. Raven smiled back, thinking maybe she wouldn’t spend every afternoon alone, after all.
