Gen Z is bringing back the part-time job (Washington Post) More of today’s Gen Z high-schoolers are making their way into the workforce, picking up after school and summer jobs, and reversing a trend of forgoing work when millennials were teens. At least 250,000 more teenagers are now working compared to before the pandemic, part of a gradual but consequential shift that is boosting employment at restaurants and stores, and changing cultural norms. In all, 37 percent of 16- to 19-year-olds had a job or were looking for one last year, the highest annual rate since 2009, according to Labor Department data. That pickup follows more than four decades of declines. “The teenagers who are here now, they really want to be here,” said Nilo Gonzalez, a pizzeria owner in Albuquerque, who went from having no teens on staff to hiring three, a quarter of his workforce. “They’re energetic and ready to work, which wasn’t really the case with the previous generation of millennials.”

Rats and mice swarm trenches in Ukraine in grisly echo of World War I (CNN) The frontlines of Russia’s war in Ukraine have become infested with rats and mice, reportedly spreading disease that causes soldiers to vomit and bleed from their eyes, crippling combat capability and recreating the gruesome conditions that plagued troops in the trench warfare of World War I. A Ukrainian servicewoman, who goes by the call-sign “Kira,” recalled how her battalion was beset last fall by a “mouse epidemic” while fighting in as the southern Zaporizhzhia region. “Imagine going to bed, and the night begins with a mouse crawling into your pants or sweater, or chewing your fingertips, or biting your hand. You get two or three hours’ sleep, depending on how lucky you are,” Kira told CNN. She estimated there were around 1,000 mice in her dugout of four soldiers. “It was not the mice who were visiting us; we were their guests.” The infestations are due partly to the change in seasons and mice’s mating cycle, but are also a measure of how the war has become static, after Ukraine’s counteroffensive was largely rebuffed by heavily fortified Russian defenses. Amid another harsh winter, mice are foraging along the nearly 1,000-kilometer (621-mile) frontline, spreading disease and dissatisfaction as they search for food and warmth.

As Missiles Strike, a Radio Station Broadcasts the Rage of a Battered City (NYT) It was the middle of the night in early January when a Russian missile streaked in and exploded in the center of Kharkiv, blasting down walls and shattering windows. The next day, people went shopping and to work, ate out in restaurants and clogged the streets with traffic jams, almost as if nothing had happened. But behind the business-as-usual veneer, residents of Kharkiv have been seething. Over the past month, Ukraine’s second-largest city has taken the brunt of Russia’s missile campaign, which has killed and wounded dozens of people, blown up buildings and unnerved everyone. It’s an almost daily torment. To vent, Kharkiv’s residents have a dedicated outlet: Radio Boiling Over, a new FM station. “This is Boiling Over in the Morning,” Volodymyr Noskov, the host of the morning call-in show, said on a recent broadcast. “What are you boiling over about today?” The station broadcasts hourly news updates and talk shows in the morning and evening, with a focus on missile strikes; interviews with soldiers on the frontline 100 or so miles east; investigations of Russian war crimes, and of course the anger of hundreds of thousands of people forced to worry daily about their safety. The station’s name, Radio Nakypilo, can also be translated as Radio Fed Up.

Is Kim Jong-un Really Planning an Attack This Time? (NYT) North Korea fired hundreds of artillery shells in waters near South Korean border islands on Jan. 5. Last week, it said it no longer regarded the South as inhabited by “fellow countrymen” but as a “hostile state” it would subjugate through a nuclear war. On Friday, it said it had tested an underwater nuclear drone to help repel U.S. Navy fleets. That new drumbeat of threats, while the United States and its allies have been preoccupied with the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, has set foreign officials and analysts wondering whether the North’s leader, Kim Jong-un, has moved beyond posturing and is planning to assert more military force. For decades, a central part of the North Korean playbook has been to stage carefully measured and timed military provocations—some aimed at tightening internal discipline, others at demanding attention from its neighbors and the United States, or all of that at once. But to several close watchers of North Korea, the latest round of signals from Mr. Kim feels different. Some are taking it as a clue that the North has become disillusioned with seeking diplomatic engagement with the West, and a few are raising the possibility that the country could be planning a sudden assault on South Korea.

War Has Already Hurt the Economies of Israel’s Nearest Neighbors (NYT) Despite the staggering death toll and wrenching misery of the violence in the Middle East, the broader economic impact so far has been mostly contained. Oil production and prices, a critical driver of worldwide economic activity and inflation, have returned to pre-crisis levels. International tourists are still flying into other countries in the Middle East like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Yet for Israel’s next-door neighbors—Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan—the economic damage is already severe. An assessment by the United Nations Development Program estimated that in just three months, the Israel-Gaza war has cost the three countries $10.3 billion, or 2.3 percent of their combined gross domestic product. An additional 230,000 people in these countries are also expected to fall into poverty. “Human development could regress by at least two to three years in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon,” the analysis warned, citing refugee flows, soaring public debt and declines in trade and tourism—a vital source of revenue, foreign currency and employment.

War in Gaza is making childbirth a nightmare (Washington Post) The humanitarian catastrophe caused by Israel’s three-month military campaign against Hamas in Gaza counts some 52,000 pregnant women among its greatest victims. As airstrikes push 1.9 million people into an ever-smaller corner of the besieged enclave, disease is spreading, famine is looming and levels of anemia are so high that the risk of postpartum hemorrhage has soared and breastfeeding is often impossible. Forty percent of pregnancies are high-risk, CARE international estimates. Prenatal care is almost nonexistent—what remains of Gaza’s hospital network is on its knees, at 250 percent capacity and consumed with treating mass casualties from Israeli bombing. Far more women are giving birth outside of medical facilities—in displacement camps, even in the street—than inside them. Damage to facilities and communications blackouts—the strip lost cellphone service for a week this month—have left Gaza’s health ministry unable to compile reliable data for infant or maternal mortality during the conflict. But doctors and aid groups say miscarriage and stillbirths have spiked.

Netanyahu Again Rebuffs Biden Over Palestinian State (NYT) Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has doubled down on his opposition to the creation of a Palestinian state, again rebuffing pressure from President Biden to agree to that path after the war in Gaza is over. “I will not compromise on full Israeli security control of the entire area west of the Jordan River—and that is irreconcilable with a Palestinian state,” Mr. Netanyahu posted Saturday evening in Hebrew on X, formerly Twitter. Mr. Netanyahu’s comments came just a day after Mr. Biden spoke to him about a two-state solution and floated the possibility of a disarmed Palestinian nation that would not threaten Israel’s security. Mr. Biden has argued that the creation of a Palestinian state is the only viable long-term resolution to a conflict that has dragged on for decades, repeating a position held by most American presidents and European leaders in recent history. While there was no indication that Mr. Netanyahu would ease his strenuous opposition, which is popular with his fragile right-wing political coalition, Mr. Biden expressed optimism that they might yet find consensus.

As Houthis vow to fight on, U.S. prepares for sustained campaign (Washington Post) The Biden administration is crafting plans for a sustained military campaign targeting the Houthis in Yemen after 10 days of strikes failed to halt the group’s attacks on maritime commerce, stoking concern among some officials that an open-ended operation could derail the war-ravaged country’s fragile peace and pull Washington into another unpredictable Middle Eastern conflict. The deepening cycle of violence is a setback to President Biden’s goal of stemming spillover hostilities triggered by Israel’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Underscoring the threat, Iran on Saturday blamed Israel for a strike on the Syrian capital, Damascus, that killed five Iranian military advisers. The Israeli military declined to comment. BTS’s RM Has Sent K-Pop Fans Flooding to Art Museums Thanks to His Instagram

When Korean pop superstars BTS visited the White House in May to talk about the recent spike in anti-Asian hate crimes, over 300,000 people watched the briefing live – compared to a more typical 16,000. The pop group, which announced in June that it is going on a temporary break, is known for having that effect – it’s become known colloquially as “the BTS bump.”

A few days earlier, the group’s leader RM used his clout to draw attention to a more niche institution – the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston – and its exhibit on the Canadian-American painter Phillip Guston.

As he has for dozens of museums and galleries, the 27-year-old Korean musician posted about his visit to his 35.6 million followers on Instagram, sending his eager fanbase rushing to visit, learn more, and post on social media. That’s just what happens when one of the world’s biggest pop stars becomes passionate about a new hobby.

“As an art enthusiast and a collector who loves art, I read and study a lot hoping to grow special insights and better discerning eyes … ” RM, who began visiting museums regularly in 2018, told ARTnews via email.

“I’m not good at multitasking, but I’m a person who digs deep once I get interested. Right now, I’m into art.”

RM’s deep appreciation of art is well known in South Korea. After he lent a sculpture by artist Kwon Jin Kyu to the Seoul Museum of Art earlier this year, SeMA’s curator said the exhibition became one of its most attended. When he was photographed last summer reading a book on Korean artists that had been out-of-print for decades, it suddenly became a bestseller.

For many in South Korea’s art scene, RM’s influence cannot be overstated.

“There are a lot of art exhibitions being held these days and they can be divided into two broad categories,” Yang Jeong-mu, a Western Art History professor at Korean National University of the Arts told Korean radio station SBS Power FM in December. “The ones RM went to and the ones RM didn’t go to.”

But while BTS – and by extension, RM – has become one of the most famous acts in the world, knowledge in the United States of RM’s affinity for fine art remains mostly limited to the K-pop group’s diehard fans.

The American art world appears to be catching on quickly, though. 

In early December last year, RM went on a road trip through the US, which he documented on an Instagram account launched shortly before the trip. While RM posted photos from concerts, his favorite reading material, selfies, or daily life, his most common subject was art – and specifically the various exhibitions he attended. 

Instagram, RM said, has become “a place where I can casually share my taste and life off stage that people could relate to.” And, as RM has become more passionate about art, his “spectrum of favorite artworks or artists is getting wider,” he said. 

That means more exhibitions to visit.

On that December trip, RM posted from numerous museums and galleries including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Menil Collection and the Rothko Chapel in Houston, the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, and Skarstedt Gallery in New York City.

When Texas’ Kimbell Art Museum and Blanton Museum got wind that RM was in the state, they each publicly courted him on Twitter to come visit. A few months earlier, RM gave a speech at the Metropolitan Museum of Art when the South Korean government donated a contemporary lacquerware piece to their collection.

While RM’s visits are typically unannounced, arts institutions have noted receiving a surge in social media activity after the BTS member posts. The Chinati Foundation’s post thanking RM for visiting generated 92,000 likes – their other posts typically receive between 200 and 1,500 likes. A post from a month prior to RM’s visit featuring Korean artist Yun Hyong-Keun’s works has over 6,000 likes and is flooded with comments mentioning RM and BTS.

Meanwhile, the National Gallery of Art’s tweet resharing his visit has the most engagement of any tweet for their account at nearly 12,000 retweets and 40,000 likes. The National Gallery translated that attention into a bigger following. In the 24 hours after RM’s post – which didn’t even tag the institution – the National Gallery acquired nearly three times the number of followers it would on an average day, according to Anabeth Guthrie, the National Gallery’s chief of communications.

“We were heartened to see how many people shared that they were now inspired to visit,” Guthrie told ARTnews.

Harder to quantify is whether RM’s posts resulted in more visitors, whether from BTS fans – also known as ARMYs – or otherwise. A number of the galleries and museums said they had no way of substantiating a bump in attendance due to RM because they don’t collect that kind of granular data.

A few of the larger museums, like The Getty in Los Angeles, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, reported not seeing any appreciable difference. And, in some cases, like RM’s visit to Skarstedt to see KAWS, the exhibit was already sold out when he attended on one of its final days.

When ARMY Stops By – #Namjooning

Common amongst ARMYs is the phenomenon dubbed “Namjooning,” after the artist’s legal name, Kim Namjun, where fans will post photos of themselves taking part in RM’s hobbies, like hiking, bike riding, caring for plants, and appreciating the sky.

Appreciating art has become a common method of #Namjooning. The Rothko Chapel told ARTnews of numerous visitors telling staff RM inspired their visit. The Broad in Los Angeles and The Menil Collection mentioned seeing visitors cluster in areas where RM posed for his Instagram posts, like outside Menil’s Cy Twombly Gallery. Similarly, at the National Gallery of Art, fans have taken to recreating RM’s photo outside the museum’s 6th Street entrance; Guthrie said that she has seen fans share photos of the musician’s favorite works.

Meanwhile, the Getty has become a popular pilgrimage site for ARMYs. Fans spoken to by ARTnews almost all mentioned seeing other ARMYs during their visit.

Virgie Felix, a 44-year-old ICU nurse from Atlanta, told ARTnews she visited The Broad and The Getty museums on a visit to Los Angeles after seeing RM post about the institutions. 

“We were able to see and experience art that we may not have thought about going to see,” she said, while discussing the effects of RM’s love of art, via Twitter. “There were so many ARMYs at both of them as well!” 

Several fans said that they were inspired to go to museums locally, while others are making plans to visit the same institutions as RM, especially those that are difficult to reach. 

Inspired by RM, Brooklyn-based UX designer Amber Muck, 30, is now planning to visit the Rothko Chapel this fall. 

“Because life is too short to not see the art that you love,” she said.

Others, like 28-year-old immigration attorney Abyan Gurase, New York, have gone not only to museums RM has frequented, like the Met, but to keep an eye on his favorite artists and view their exhibitions when they can. For example, she recently visited the Brooklyn Museum to see an exhibit on the street artist KAWS, one of RM’s favorite artists.

RM’s Growing Reputation as an Art Aficionado

As RM spends more time at US art institutions, arts professionals have begun to recognize him as someone with a complex understanding of art.

After RM’s visit to the Chinati Foundation, director Jenny Moore described the K-Pop star to ARTnews as a “noted art collector” and “particularly passionate” about Korean painter Yun Hyong-keun and American minimalist artist Donald Judd. Chinati, which was founded by Judd and contains many of his works in its permanent collection, featured both artists recently in a special exhibit.

“We spent several hours touring the permanent installations and special exhibitions and particularly appreciated [RM] sharing with us his perceptions of the work and his deep knowledge of both Judd and Yun,” Moore said. 

Will Davison, the Communication and Visitor Engagement Manager for the Rothko Chapel, provided RM with a personal tour. He came away similarly impressed.

“I was enamored with his depth of knowledge and appreciation for the artistry of Mark Rothko,” Davison told ARTnews, noting that RM has visited Rothko’s work all over the world. “It was a pleasure to be in his presence and just to get a bird’s eye view of his understanding of this work.”

Davison isn’t alone in his assessment. Guthrie, of the National Gallery, loved that the songwriter shared some of his favorite works.

“He chose some of our hidden gems—like a case of oil sketches by Georges Seurat,” she said.

When RM discusses this particular passion, he often talks about art as if it were a refuge.

“Visual art is a different field and because I can purely enjoy them without any strings attached, the feeling becomes more vivid,” he said. 

RM continued, “The visual experience feels more complete. I’m often moved by the fact that I can see and feel the real textures or physical existence of the work from the time when the artists were alive.”

But now that RM has found a new way to share his personal discovery of art, he is looking for more ways to make art accessible to newbies.

“Some day, I would like to create a public space related to art which, I think, would not be in the form of a gallery or a museum,” he said.

Belgium and the United Arab Emirates request the U.S. support package for F-16 and C-17 aircraft

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified the U.S. Congress of a potential foreign military sale (FMS) of support for Belgium's F-16 fighters and United Arab Emirates C-17 transport aircraft.

Approved by the U.S. Department of State, the estimated value of the sale and associated equipment is approximately $127 million for the F-16s and $980.4 million for the C-17s.

The additional support support of the F-16 Fighting Falcon requested by the Belgian government will be added to a previously implemented case.

The original $98.4 million sales package involved the support of the F-16, including AN/ARC-210 radios, computer program identification numbers, classified software, electronic warfare database support, support equipment, software integration support and aircraft and ammunition support, as well as test support and equipment.

In a press release, DSCA said: "The proposed sale will improve Belgium's ability to face current and future threats, keeping its F-16 fleet in a state ready for combat and providing rotating forces to NATO's eastern flank."

The Belgian Air Force was one of the first international customers of the F-16, having ordered a total of 160 F-16s. The country is now acquiring the 34 F-35 fighters that will eventually replace the F-16.

The main contractor for the new Belgian package is Lockheed Martin, from Bethesda, Maryland.

The C-17 Globemaster aircraft support package and materials associated with the United Arab Emirates has also been approved by the U.S. Department of State.

The main contractor will be The Boeing Company, from Chicago, Illinois, which delivered a total of 8 Globemasters to the United Arab Emirates by 2012.

The agency said in a statement: "The proposal to renew support for C-17 aircraft will provide the government of the United Arab Emirates with reliable defense capability, provide strategic and humanitarian air transport and ensure interoperability with U.S. forces."

The two FMSs will make the U.S. provide engineers, studies and research, technical and logistical support services, classified and unclassified publications, technical documentation and other associated elements of logistical and program support.

MOST MEMORABLE OR FAVORITE EVENT: Debuting with Crystallis is Astrid’s most memorable, as well as her favorite event because it’s validation that all she had given up for this dream was worth it.
