IV. Atonement
She had become too involved in murky politics, too involved for comfort. She, who? Yes, our Kanta Madam!
Even though Kanta Madam’s hubby KantaShyam was all for a clean and well oiled life and was happy even in less, she wanted more and more, being just never satisfied.
It was at one of the picnic sojourns at her friend’s place that she had first met RadheRaman, who impressed her very much. So much so that she immediately proceeded to invite him to tea at her own residence.
Now, KantaShyam was a chemist who sold only genuine allopathic medicines at his store and was doing reasonably well. RadheRaman’s suggestion to him was to make more money by investing in medicines made at a local factory, owned by RadheRaman’s maternal uncle. KantaShyam didn’t say anything upfront but later on told an excited Kanta Madam that there was nothing much to cheer about as the medicines churned out by this local factory were all fake and not genuine. He just could not afford to play with the lives of the general public at large for his own selfish motives.
But, Kanta argued with him – “what has your honesty given you all these years? You are not even able to send your children to a decent public school!” However, KantaShyam held his ground.
RadheRaman’s nephew was in politics. He exhorted Kanta to contest the elections and join politics to fulfill her fond ambitions. Kanta won and was triumphant. She now not only had power but also amassed huge pounds of wealth by all means, fair or foul. KantaShyam slowly detached himself from her and they lived like two complete strangers under one roof.
Slowly but surely, Kanta’s ambitions grew by leaps and bounds; she found herself involved in many a rackets and financial scandals.
But very soon, someone tipped off a national daily and there was a huge uproar and public outcry against all such cases of frauds and cheating. An inquiry committee was set to probe the issue and almost all of Kanta’s ardent friends & fans, RadheRaman included, faded into the background.
In the end, Kanta could only find complete comfort, solace and peace in KantaShyam, who was still waiting for her to be part of the family.
And, to tell you the truth, this would be Kanta Madam’s real atonement too. For, in search of happiness hither & thither, she had forgotten her very own home, the substratum of her existence and her lifeline in every way!
Well, as a part of the family, you have got to play your part! She had up till now played a negative part! Her positive one was just beginning now as a new dawn was waiting for her, welcoming her ever so positively into its warm fold & lap!!
