"Ben-Tor posted the clip on October 19 to the Instagram account she runs with fellow Israeli artist and collaborator Miki Carmi. In the video, the artist delivers a sarcastic monologue while wearing a mask that many on social criticized as (is) a “racist caricature” of Arabs or Palestinians. Some critics used the term (this racist performance trope is called) “Arabface” in describing the artist’s performance... Past works by (Tamy) Ben-Tor show her caricaturing Arab people; in what appears to be the artist’s YouTube channel chronicling her performances, one video uploaded in 2012 shows Ben-Tor in the guise of a character she calls “Dr. Hammam, Middle East expert and civil rights activist” who makes anti-Jewish remarks. In another piece, from 2004, Ben-Tor appears to play the role of Hitler while wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh. In a 2005 video titled “Girls Beware,” Ben-Tor again dresses as an Arab man, this time delivering catcalls, then makes anti-Arab comments while playing the role of a sex worker."

the idea of transsexuality existing in qunari society with the aqun-athlok is sooo fascinating to me that i wish it would be explored more in-universe without it becoming intensely racist and islamophobic but because of that i know this is all wishful thinking </3

I've been watching the adventures of tintin 1991 with my sister and were watching the blue lotus part 2 and when Chang showed up I literally sat up in my chair and pointed at the screen like he was a famous actor. He has entered my brain forever, and I have you to thank for it.

for a character that popped up for only two adventures he left quite an impact on me too. I can imagine he'd make quite an impression when staying over in Belgium and making some appearances in the paper!
my sister was studying the opium trade and its links with colonialism so we were watching the 1991 cartoon episodes for The Blue Lotus and The Crab with the Golden Claws. I remember a) cringing every time Mitsuhirato appeared b) cringing at the voice they decided to give Chang and c) my sister turning around and looking at me every time a Chinese Musical Sting™ would play (we're Chinese)

hey! as the first season of connor bedard gets underway i, your local indigenous hockey fan, have a request of you: please don't let this kid's sure to be marvellous and jaw-dropping rookie season make you complacent with the racism of the blackhawks as an organization. it is beyond heinous that they were able to secure the first overall pick this year for a number of reasons i'm sure we're all familiar with, but i am pleading with the hockey community not to let the racism of this org fall through the cracks.
they drafted connor bedard and handed him a jersey with a giant racist caricature on the front. their mascot is named tommy hawk. they continuously fail to curtail their fans' egregious displays of anti-indigenous racism at games.
i'm not going to ask anyone not to post about bedard. i know he's huge news and i'm bummed as all hell that i won't be able to enjoy the beginning of what is sure to be an incredible career myself. but i am asking, given that his presence on the team is likely to increase the prevalence of people making and reblogging posts about the blackhawks, that you please care, loudly and actively, about the racism of this organization and how much it hurts indigenous fans to see that go unquestioned so often.
consider mentioning it in posts. consider amplifying the voices of indigenous fans and community members about the issues of these types of sports organizations. consider reading up on the history of the person they claim to 'honour' with their hideous effigy of a logo. consider censoring the logo in your posts if you are able to (please do this if you are able to). consider tagging posts so that indigenous fans are at the very least able to blacklist that team and not have to see it.
above all, please just. don't forget about it. don't forget about us. we belong here too.

Honestly my problem with "it's just fiction" and "don't like don't read" as an argument isn't even the subject matter in itself but that mindset just takes away meaning from art.
It's like, the same argument as "it's just a joke" that bigoted comedians use. Okay but how does a joke/fiction reflect our values, shape culture, or reinforce biases? There is value in the fiction and it makes us feel something, otherwise we wouldn't engage with it at all. That's the entire point.
I'm not trying to make a definitive moral statement on how subject matter needs to be handled or depicted, I just think we need to do more thought than "it's not real" because that argument deters analysis and denies art meaning. Subject matter and how it's framed or handled is on a case by case basis.
Not every piece of fiction is made with clear intentions, for gratification, or for a specific emotional response. "It's just fiction" scrubs away the fact that our fiction can say things about us, even by accident. People may reveal their prejudice and biases through their fiction. People can perpetuate and reinforce harmful ideas they sincerely believe through fiction.
"It's just fiction" or "Don't like don't read" is appropriate when addressing harassment, subjective tastes, and boundaries, but it's not appropriate for legitimate criticism. Criticism isn't inherently harassment or censorship, and no artwork should get a free pass to be immune from criticism just because it's for fun and free.
Fandom spaces are full of people who are genuinely misogynistic, ableist, and racist. Treating all art made within these spaces as escapist fun, meaningless porn, or otherwise superficial and easy to understand, does a disservice to the art, but also lets a lot of people get away with uncritically perpetuating genuine harm.

Last I checked, there are still native caricatures in Pizza Tower. That is racist. It doesn't matter if it wasn't the intent- the end result is racism. It's not insane violent racism, but it is still racist. You can do what you want with that fact, that's not my problem. Just saying what it is.

Hey I'm not going to reblog it bc I'd rather not give it more notes than it deserves but uhhh If you "draw" (its ai art) an argonian in a warbonnet smoking a pipe and calling it a "shaman" something tells me you do not respect indigenous people's cultures and are actually pretty racist!

Scouring the public domain for collage assets is all chill, seeing art that feels ahead of its time or really cool illustrations, all until you inevitably stumble across the most wildly racist shit you've seen and get your noggin blasted, repeat ad nauseum

seeing non-black people critique rick's portrayal of black characters is interesting sometimes. only like 30% of the critiques I see make any sense to me to be honest
#“rick made carter be an elvis presley fan that's fucked up!” is a real thing I just read#do you think black people can't enjoy elvis even though he appropriated black culture for personal gain#boy you would not like what I have to tell you about eminem. or kpop. or anything else bc black culture has been#appropriated by like everyone forever. are black people not allowed to enjoy iggy or ariana or billie or [the list goes on]#I myself am not biracial but I /mostly/ like carter and sadie (specifically carter who isn't white-passing) as black representation#the part where carter feels indignant that he has to hold himself to a higher standard because the world is harsher on black boys#did genuinely resonate with me when I first read that part as a child and it still does to this day#can we talk about how rick knows nothing about black hair instead#or how hazel is from the jim crow era and seems to not have one single thought about race in the modern era#or hazel's horror over the amazons keeping slaves but “no they're not slaves they just like it that way 🥰”#my problems with hazel are not at all about stereotypes I just don't buy her as an authentic portrayal of a black girl from the 1930s#don't get me started on beckendorf. does every black character need to die a violent horrible death rick#anyways this isn't intended to make anyone feel bad but we need more meaningful nuance in critiques beyond “hey that's a stereotype! bad!”#if you can't discern and communicate WHY it's bad then you're not saying anything of substance#is it a caricature? is it uninformed/underresearched? are all the characters from that group being represented in that way?#is the stereotype itself a degradation of that group? is it being played for laughs? is the character a one-dimensional stereotype?#what can we glean about the biases of the author/narrative and their worldview through their portrayal of certain groups in the text?#a big part of literary analysis and critique is not only pointing out The Thing. you need to also say something about The Thing#like if you have a black character say they like hiphop then sure it's a “stereotype”. but lots of black people do like hiphop#it's an important part of black american culture and portraying that in media isn't racist by default#and in fact lots of poc keep parts of themselves quiet for fear of being perceived as a “stereotype” when we shouldn't have to do that#BUT if you're doing it like jonah wizard was written in the 39 clues then that's where we've got a problem bc wtf was that rick#that was so racist oh my god I was like 11 years old reading that 😭 and then he had the white mc poke fun at him for being a gangster#and him being a “gangsta” was always played for laughs throughout the story#not being pro-rick here as I'm a big fan of critical riordan reading just being pro-thoughtful critiques because some of you guys actually#sound a wee bit ignorant when saying things like what was mentioned in the first tag#baye.txt#pjo hoo toa#rr crit#<- tagging that just for. well the tags basically
