Was This Vacation a Mistake?~Crazy Rich Asians (Astrid x black! fem! reader) ~Part 3
Parts: 1 2 3 4 5
Summary: After a traumatic night, you decide to stay with Astrid a few nights before you depart back to America. The situation left you angry and terrified, but Astrid proved to be an amazing hostess and a shoulder to cry on.
Word Count:
Warnings: Talk of racism and microaggressions.
Author’s Note: Here’s part 3 guys! As always tell me how this is going so far and what you like about it. Idk if this is good or not but I really want to finish this series soon. Anyway, hope y’all enjoy.
The cup of tea Astrid offered grew cold in my hands as I sat on her fine couch in the living room, my head against Rachel’s shoulder. Astrid strolled back into the room, returning from putting her son Cassain back to bed.
“Do you need anything else, Y/N?” Astrid said as she circled the couch and leaned against its back. “Blanket or something, you and Rachel look like you’re about done for the night.”
She wasn’t wrong, my eyes were heavy and Rachel was quiet for a while. Her phone dinged, awakening her from her semi sleepy state.
“Mmh, N-Nick! He’s outside!” she said, eyes and fingers sweeping her phone simultaneously.
I sat up to the best of my abilities and try not to blink too much with grogginess and stress already pulsing around my temple. Grading papers should have been the move from the beginning; I wasn’t welcome here from the start, people like me weren’t welcome from the start.
“Y/N,” Nick’s caring voice broke me from my thoughts thankfully. He stood in the center of Astrid’s living room with Rachel at his arm, his eyes sparkling in concern. “First of all, I’m so sorry this happened. Come here.”
Nick pulled me into his arms, nearly making me weep from the contact. His tall frame was soothing, yet I felt terrible because of all that’s happened; this happened because of me. If I stayed home, they wedding would have gone on, Rachel probably wouldn’t have to worry as much as she has to. I wouldn’t be the center in all this, so much pity. It isn’t pity, I should know that, it’s racism. Full blown racism in my face and I can’t fathom it for some reason. I don’t know why. Frustration pooled at me, tears and heat pricked my skin and eyelids.
“Y/N? Are you all right?” Nick asked. He pulled back to pat my elbows.
Rachel sunk to my side, wrapping an arm around my shoulder. “Y/N?”
“I-I’m OK. I-I’m fine, I-I just need a night to, I don’t know, forget all of this,” you said as you leaned into Rachel. “I want to go home though, I’m sorry, guys.”
Nick shook his head. “No, no. In fact, I booked you a ticket home the day after tomorrow. First class of course, my friends stay in style. It’s the least I can do for how uncouth and down right disgusting my family and our associates were. I can even book you the best hotel around here.”
The thought was nice, a little too nice but I had to declined.
“Sorry, Nick, I don’t think that’d be a great idea. Don’t want to seem out of place again.”
“Would a coastal house work? A short heli ride would get you there in--”
“Nick, I don’t think that’ll help,” Rachel said, cutting him off. “Traveling somewhere that isn’t home won’t help, yeah? Y/N?”
I nodded. Nick’s amazing, I love him but throwing money at everything isn’t going to bring me the comfort he thinks it will. It is endearing though.
“She can stay here for tonight, tomorrow as well,” Astrid said, speaking up from her position behind the couch, hand smoothing out the plushness of it. “Anything she needs, I’ll be willing to provide, no issue.”
My heart skipped a beat at the offer; Rachel’s trying not to grin from ear to ear, brought me closer by the shoulder to look at me with those brown eyes. They’re still glossy, all authentic for me I know but know she’s using them to her advantage I swear.
“Astrid sounds like great company, yeah?” she said. Her voice dropped to a whisper. “She’ll look out for you, I promise.”
Nick embraced Astrid prior to turning back to Rachel and I. “Thank you, you don’t know how much this means to me.”
Astrid smiled, it reached her beauty mark, highlighting her face perfectly. How was I going to survive a night in her home? Two nights even. Rachel beamed back as if she heard my mental question, squeezing my shoulders.
“You got this, call us when you feel a little better. OK?”
I nodded. Rachel and Nick gave me quick hugs, doing the same with Astrid before they left, leaving me alone with her. Alone with Astrid Leong. Alone with my thoughts. Alone with all that’s happened.
“Y/N?” Astrid called.
Her voice soft, as it was before yet lower, tender. I didn’t want to look at her, didn’t want her pity. I just want to go home already.
“Y/N?” she called again. I glanced at her, she’s close now, right in front of me; the pity I harped on wasn’t there in her eyes though, hurt and worry, similar to how she seemed at Nick’s grandmother’s house.
“C-Can I hug you?” she asked, opening her arms a bit. Her mouth twitched in a tiny smile while she hesitated with her movements. “Hugs always put me at ease, I-I want to put you at ease.”
The word ease broke me, almost. Tears pricked at my eyes, Astrid found them as she inched closer. She didn’t hug me though, still gauging my reaction. I nodded and met her in a warm embrace; it eased me as she said: her arms wound around me perfectly, fit me well and the tears slipped. A sob broke through too. Why the fuck am I crying? I was supposed to forget about all of that shit.
“It’s all right, darling. Let it out, it’s OK,” Astrid whispered. She pulled back to wipe my tears. She nodded to her couch. “Want to sit?”
I nodded, pursed my lips to keep from tasting the salty tears.
Astrid led me by the hand toward the couch, left some space between us when we got there, still holding onto me. Her touch proved pleasant, more so than it has been before--I was at ease. Her hand wrapped around my own wasn’t a huge deal either. I’m not even sure how long I can last but its working so far.
“T-Thank you, i-it means a lot, letting me stay here,” I managed to say. Astrid’s thumb rubbed my knuckles a little prior to her pulling it away.
“It’s nothing you have to thank me for,” she said. “Do you want to talk about it at all?”
This is a safe space I realize, however I’m not completely sure about opening up about these racially charged encounters. Sure, she’s non-white but like Rachel, sometimes it’s difficult bringing these matters up and talking through them. Sometimes I just need to deal with it on my own, then again, I do need to talk it out--somewhat.
“I-I just expected to tag along with Rachel and for this to be a normal vacation,” I started. “But I got centered, I-I should have known. Anti-blackness is global. I should have thought about it more, researched. I’m a professor for God’s sake, I always tell my students this. Maybe this vacation was a mistake, maybe I should have just stayed home.”
Astrid’s hands flocked to mine again, her eyes glossy once more. “No matter how much research or preparedness you set yourself up for, no one deserves to be harassed or see something like that.”
I nodded. “Yeah, but I don’t think it’s the same. We both experience some fucked shit, I’m sure, you went to schools in England right? Most of those posh white folks, right?”
Astrid giggled at the description. “They were the living embodiment of posh. And you’re right. My experience is not the same but I can tell you about them. Take some of the weight off from today. Will that help?”
“Yeah,” I said.
Maybe I said it too quickly. It was her touches and how intense she looked to me: attentiveness deep in her brown eyes, paying all the mind to me, I had to glance to the spotless carpet below.
“As you know, or maybe you don’t, I’m not sure how much Nick has shared about me, I attended Harvard during university,” Astrid explained. She ceased holding my hands, calming my heart for a bit. “At this time, I was eighteen, away from home with enough money to make my posh peers turn their heads. Unfortunately, my money wasn’t the only thing they noticed.”
Astrid grimaced and I didn’t want her to delve back into anything like that. It’s different yes, but it can still hurt people. Rachel’s told me plenty.
“Astrid, you don’t have to tell me, if it’s too much,” I said. My hand moved on instinct, holding her hand myself. “I-I get it.”
“Darling, it’s fine,” she said. “It’s not the most pleasant story to look back on but it happened. First semester, I was the only Asian girl in my class. There was an Asian boy, but he flocked with the white boys and a grade above me so there wasn’t too much we’d mutually have in common besides our ethnicity. I was Astrid the princess, according to Nick and I wished my white peers saw me as just some spoiled girl. Instead I was Astrid the girl who could grant you a happy ending; Astrid the girl who had to sit up front because her eyes were too slanted. There was worse things but, Y/N, you shouldn’t have to limit yourself because of what history has done. What these systems and institutions have done. Don’t let that stop you.”
She’s right. Astrid’s absolutely right. The dam broke again at this obvious realization and I’m crying again, trembling and all.
Astrid just pulled me toward her, embracing me yet again. I feel so stupid.
“I’m sorry,” I sobbed against her shoulder. “I-I don’t mean to do this. I hate feeling like this.”
“Don’t apologize, it’s OK.”
We stayed like that for a while: Astrid wrapping her arms around my back, my head against her chest, heartbeat nearly lulling me to sleep. Tiny footsteps neared however, along with a few creaks of the floor and staircase.
“Mommy?”
Astrid tore herself away to face the child standing in a purple satin sleep shirt and matching pants. His hair askew, face clearly scrunched up from sleep. Cassian. Astrid’s son. I pulled myself further from Astrid, wishing I could sink into the couch altogether.
“And what are you doing up, sweetie?” Astrid said, grin plastered on her face, not feeling awkward about her son seeing his mother hug a woman he doesn’t know. “You should be in bed.”
Cassian rubbed his eyes with the back of a fist, attention on me while Astrid lifted him up to her lap, showing the boy off to me.
“Who’s that?” he asked.
Astrid’s eyes shined, love filling them to the brim as she stared at her son, then to me. I still wanted to disappear; Astrid’s got my heart flipping again and skin set to a scorch. Maybe Rachel had a point, definitely not telling her about all the details of tonight.
“This is Y/N, Nick and mommy’s friend and our guest for a few nights,” she cooed, kissing Cassian on the forehead. “How about we go settle in bed and give her some space, hmm?”
I waved at the boy awkwardly. He seemed delicate in Astrid’s arms, fluttering his eyes, squishing and yawning as she stood engulfing the boy in tender love.
“C-Can you read me a story too?” Cassain whined.
“Of course we can, my love,” Astrid said. She was halfway up the stairs; I couldn’t stop looking at her. She turned back toward me, voice dropping a bit.“I’ll bring you some blankets to get comfortable, darling.”
Astrid’s gone before I can react, off to her motherly duties like the day we met. I’ve talked with her, seen her heart, been catered by her heart and I’m still skeptical about the entire thing. A mother, divorcee and a rich person. Rich rich. Loaded and her actions, her demeanor already triggers me, in a great yet intense way. Is she just being nice? Or is Rachel right? Should I talk to Nick about this? Should I not take this venture? Leave it alone before something drastic occurs again, her family is still old money, old traditions, old systems. Maybe I shouldn’t be looking at a potential straight woman like this?
The thoughts continued to linger while I sunk deeper into the couch.
Astrid returned after a while, a set of fancy comforters and covers hulking her arms. “I wish I would have prepared the guest room better but the couch is just as comfortable. Make yourself at home, stretch as much as you’d like, all right?”
I nodded, laid across the couch and reached up for the covers. Astrid pouted and shook her head.
“No, no. Let me, I am your hostess after all,” she said as she fluffed up the covers. “I need everyone under my roof safe, sound and more importantly, tucked in.”
My face and heart raced among-est each other each time Astrid placed a layer on me, tucked a cover against my arm and back, patted in place. She’s so close, there’s no way she’s just being nice.
“Y/N? Are you all right? This didn’t make you uncomfortable, did it?”
I shook my head fervently. “No, this is so much more than I can ask for Thank you.”
Astrid’s eyes softened. “Not a problem, darling. I hope your dreams are sweet and more pleasant than today.”
Those words tingled me to my bones, warmed me more than the massive quilt bulking me and allowed sleep to overtake me.

Baby Names
Fandom: Fringe Pairing: Peter Bishop x Olivia Dunham (main canon pairing) Content warnings: pregnancy, spoilers? Word count: 432 Author's notes: set between the season 4 finale (Brave New World) and the Invasion of the Observers, while Olivia is pregnant
Eight-month-pregnant Olivia Dunham sighed, closing the webpage on her computer. Yet another list of baby names that had all sounded wrong to her had come and gone. Given that she was due in just a few weeks, Olivia was rather anxious to have at least a few possibilities lined up for her daughter when she was born.
The blonde ran a hand through her hair, wincing when her engagement ring caught a few pale strands. She and Peter weren’t married yet- they’d agreed to wait until after their daughter was born- but they had begun some tentative wedding plans as well. Just general things- what color the bridal party (Astrid, Rachel, Ella) should wear, what time of year they’d like best, and so forth.
The doorknob rattled for a moment, attracting her attention, and a moment later the door opened. “Honey, I’m home.” Peter called.
“That’s such a cheesy line.” Olivia returned, grinning.
“Yeah, but you love it.” He replied, matching her smile as he stepped into the living room. His gaze swept across the coffee table. “Can’t find any baby names yet?”
She rolled her eyes in irritation at the issue. “They’re all too old or too new or too this or too that.” She sighed again. “All I know for sure is I want it to start with H.”
“Thank God.” He chuckled. “For a minute I thought you were gonna say you wanted it to start with Z or something.”
Olivia frowned. “What’s wrong with Z names?”
“There’s like, none of them, and they’re all weird.”
“Zoey, Zinnia…” she began to tease, but paused. “That’s where I run out. You might have a point.”
“Of course I do.” Peter joked. “So, ‘H’ names?”
“Mm-hm.”
“Well, let me think. There’s ‘Holly’, ‘Hazel’, ‘Heather’.”
“Hazel is an eye color and heather and holly are plants.” Olivia retorted playfully.
“Alright, alright. Hannah- with or without the second h, or any version of Hayley.” He offered. Studying her skeptical facial expression, he continued: “Uh, there’s Hope, Harper.”
The blonde shook her head. “Mm-mm, it’s a little too modern.”
“Old-fashioned, then?” “Helen, Hester, Heidi.”
“Those aren’t not bad. I’ll keep them in mind.”
Peter hummed to himself. “Those are somewhat older names, so… Harriet, maybe, or Harietta.”
She canted her head. “I like that even better.”
“The only other one I can think of like that is Henrietta.”
Olivia nodded, her eyes lighting. “That’s it. It’s perfect. I love it.”
“Henrietta.” Peter repeated thoughtfully. “I like it.” He bent down and kissed Olivia’s belly, flooding it with butterflies again. “We’ll see you soon, Henrietta.”
I know I'm super late to these postings, but I've been super busy lately.

would you still consider writing something for astrid x rachel (crazy rich asians)? the fandom has really been through a drought lately... this is just my fic-deprived self talking. would really really appreciate it if you did - but it's completely fine if you decide not to!
hi! sure, i totally would, feel free to leave a prompt. or a few, if you have them, in case my muse needs more ideas - i'm in my britcom hole, so will need some inspiration! but yes, i'd be happy to write for them!

Rachel x Astrid Snippet
*Not my gif*
Pairing: Rachel Chu/Astrid Leong
Summary: What if Rachel ran into Astrid while trying to leave the wedding?
Inspired by my Rachel x Astrid brain rot and my question of how tf did she get to Peik Lin’s house. She didn’t drive herself to the wedding, Peik Lin obviously wasn’t there, and she didn’t see Oliver at all. I guess she could have Uber’d or something but it’s much more fun to imagine she ran into Astrid and she gave her a ride there
Warnings: anxiety, panic attack, hurt/comfort (I didn’t really get into the comfort though)
Word count: 640
DISCLAIMER: This is an unfinished fic. I may continue it in the future if the urge hits me, but as of now, I have no plans to do that. Anything written in brackets [like this] is not part of the story itself, but necessary context.
✨Read Below!✨
[Rachel’s POV. This is during the wedding, just after Eleanor showed Rachel the PI’s photographs.]
Her heartbeat roars in her ears. Everyone is screaming. Laughing. Laughing at her. They’re always laughing at her. She can feel it pressing in on her, crushing her under the weight of their expectations, forcing the air from her lungs. She wades through the crowd, desperately searching for an empty corner or an exit or something because if she doesn’t get out of here right now she will suffocate to death.
She pushes past a clump of people and comes face-to-face with Eddie. He says something. She can’t understand a single word. But she understands when he laughs in her face, and when the others around them join in. She stumbles in a different direction because she can feel her mask starting to crumble and the tears starting to fall, and she refuses to let them know they finally won.
The giant fans at the edge of the dance floor catch Rachel’s eye. There. She shoves some guy out of her way, beelining for the empty space, when Bernard comes crashing through with his pants at his ankles and his hands all over Alistair’s actress girlfriend. The piranhas descend, laughing and pointing while the photographers snap as many pictures as they can before Bernard hobbles off. Rachel backs away, trying to leave the way she came, but she’s caught in their net. A minnow in a sea full of sharks.
The tears are welling up faster than she can choke them down, and Rachel knows she can’t keep this up much longer. A narrow path opens, and she barely hesitates before she elbows her way through. A glass shatters behind her. She can’t afford to stop and look. Further and further she swims, but the sharks seem to multiply instead of thinning. She nearly runs into Auntie Alix and Auntie Felicity. They laugh at her the same way Eddie did, and she wants to be hurt, but she can’t even bring herself to feel surprised.
Shoving past them, Rachel all but sprints for the empty space she can see up ahead. A sob falls from her lips before she can stop it. She bumps into someone else—this time a woman in a bright pink dress—but doesn’t bother to apologize. Wait—pink dress?
“Rachel?”
She freezes. Astrid’s voice is as soft as ever, but it cuts through the chaos like an answered prayer. Rachel turns towards her, and the rest of the world falls silent. Astrid’s dark brown eyes are filled with concern, her face creased into the same worried expression she’d worn at Araminta’s bachelorette party. That time, Rachel had been able to keep herself together. She picked herself up and put on a brave face so none of Araminta’s idiotic friends would know how rattled she was. But now, staring at probably the only person at this entire wedding she can actually stand to be around, she can’t hold back the flood any longer.
Rachel bursts into tears and buries her face in her hands. “Oh, God,” Astrid says, wrapping her arms around her shoulders. “Okay. Come on, Rachel. Let’s get you somewhere quiet.”
Astrid leads her away from the party until the screams and cheers fade to a dull roar.
[Astrid sits Rachel down somewhere quieter. Rachel cries for a bit before she realizes what a mess she’s making.]
“Shit, I’m so sorry,” she says. She leans back from Astrid, hurriedly wiping her face. Her fingers come away stained with mascara, mimicking the blackened tear streaks on Astrid’s pink dress.
Astrid’s frown deepens. “What?”
Rachel gestures vaguely at the ruined fabric. “Your dress.” The words come out shakier than she would like. She clears her throat, trying to steel herself. “God, I’m sorry, I—”
“Don’t worry about that,” Astrid interrupts. Her satin voice is still gentle, but firm enough to know that this was not an argument Rachel would be able to win. She reaches for Rachel’s hand, twining their fingers together. “Please. It’s all right, I promise.”
A/N: Hope you enjoyed! If I write anymore, I’ll add it onto here.

dont get me wrong--i did like nick. i did NOT hate nick but god was i shipping astrid and rachel so much in this movie
like.......my guess is one of the reasons that astrid married michael is she didnt want someone who was only besotted with her money and her family and her style--but it backfired with michael since that did matter to him, but in a negative way. the asshole--it made him feel insecure and like he shouldnt depend on astrid for anything, even when it was just her time.
rachel, on the other hand, we see genuinely wouldn’t care about astrid’s spending or her money and the dresses--the issue in CRA is not that nick comes from money, but that they had been dating for a long time and then he brings her to his family without any preparation whatsoever about the viper’s pit he’s throwing her in, or the fact that he wasn’t being honest with her--she only knew about astrid.
and astrid’s issue with michael in the movie was she was worried about his ego--worried about doing what she wanted, taking up space and eclipsing her husband. it was a relationship based on anxiety.
but with rachel she’s just so uncaring of money. She could have so easily had eleanor pay her millions of dollars, or been like i’m gonna be mrs. young and get money that way--she decided to leave, because she wasn’t going to make Nick leave his family. she wanted nick to be happy.
When she and Astrid were burying that fish together--she just saw Astrid the person, Astrid her friend, in pain and suffering and wanting to help make Astrid feel better, even if that was just a wordless hug. Rachel was the only person Astrid told about the affair as well, other than her grandmother, and that was out of desperation.
Astrid was also the one who repeatedly kept telling Nick that he needs to prepare rachel and be frank with her about what she’s getting into with their family. Like....she does seem much more aware about navigating that relationship between her family and Rachel than even Nick does.
a) Rachel would never make Astrid feel like she had to choose between Rachel and her family like Michael did and
b) Rachel would love Cassian. MIchael decided that he needed to be good enough for Astrid’s family and that involved work--forget about what he was doing to his wife and son, he was going to look like he was a good husband for THE Astrid Leong, even if that meant missing his son’s birthday. Rachel, on the other hand, genuinely enjoyed spending time with Nick’s family when it was actually his family--she flat out said she loved learning how to make dumplings with Nick and Astrid and all the Aunties and Oliver and Cassian.
Rachel is the daughter of a single mom who had to constantly work not because of prestige, but to make sure that food ended up on the table--she would be there for Cassian for every birthday, every holiday, every recital and play and award ceremony.
Plus when Astrid buys her beautiful girlfriend things not because she wants to flaunt her wealth but because they genuinely remind her of Rachel and of things that Rachel might enjoy Rachel probably just be like “hey thanks this is nice of you I love it” instead of being insecure that she cant reciprocate monetarily because Rachel would know that there is more she could do to demonstrate love than only through monetary means.
(also at this point astrid is going to get divorced anyway and shock her family that way--why not take it further and have a lesbian relationship while she’s at it?)
(btw--whats their ship name?)

Was This Vacation A Mistake?~Crazy Rich Asians( Astrid x black! fem! reader) ~Part 1
Pairing: Astrid x reader
Summary: You and your best friend Rachel have been teaching at NYU for a few years now and the both of you need a load off from it. Rachel suggests that you tag along with her and Nick to Singapore to which you reluctantly do. Although you consider yourself an outsider, you’re welcome by Rachel and Nick’s close friends. However, some of Nick’s family don’t seem too fond of Rachel and you being so chummy with Nick. All but Nick’s cousin, Astrid who comes to your rescue.
Writer’s Note: I’ve been wanted to write a black reader insert forever, since I’m a black woman and don’t really see much of it on here. I wanted to do a fic with one of Gemma Chan’s characters’ and obviously Astrid had to be the first. Crazy Rich Asians was such a great, breathtaking film that I had to write about it. Note, there will be some racism in this fic, because racism still exists, even though a lot of people believe that it’s gone. I thought about how this traditional family such as the Youngs would view an American outsider if she was a woman of color and it will not be pleasant at first.
Warnings: None. I’ll try to make it good I promise, I just wanted to try something different. Please, give me feedback! Hope ya’ll enjoy it!
Word Count: 1,527
______________________________________________________________
“Singapore?” I ask while blowing off my rather hot blueberry muffin.
Rachel nods with a dazed grin, teeth and all.
“It’s not too early is it?” she asks, “I’m still trying to determine what type of family they are.”
“I’m sure they’ll love you Rach, families can be a bit dysfunctional at time,” I say, retracting my statement immediately. “On second thought, dysfunctional doesn’t even cover it.”
“Maybe,” Rachel says, grinning abruptly. “Maybe my best friend could come with us?”
I nearly choke on the piece of muffin I began chewing.
“Come again?” I ask.
Rachel’s hands reached across the table taking my own while putting on her best pout.
“Please Y/N? I don’t want to go it alone,” she groaned.
“Uh, last time I checked you and Nick were in a relationship. I don’t do open relationships,” I say.
Rachel chuckles, “No, Y/N look when was the last time you used your passport? Wasn’t it that summer in Nice to interview that author for your class?”
“I thought I told you not to bring that up anymore? That was an asshole and didn’t respect the craft, he only cared about money,” I grumbled.
Rachel nods understandably.
“You need a break from this stuffy campus, what have you been doing since classes ended last week?” She asks.
“Grading papers,” I groan, “got down to the last two today–I’m having second thoughts about teaching next semester.”
Rachel gasps dramatically.
“Then who will join me for tea every weekend?” she asks, “who’ll listen to me vent about our current economy and listen to her bestie vent about creating the new cannon of literature.”
Rachel nudges my arm, forcing a smile back on my face.
“Don’t act like you don’t agree with me, I know these kids are sick of reading the same old white dudes as I did.” I say. “I’m close to changing it.”
“You know I’m a hundred percent on board,” Rachel says, “but you need a break, have some real Asian cuisine.”
“Rachel Chu, did you just bash your mother’s cooking skills?” I tease.
Rachel slaps my wrist playfully.
“You and I haven’t had her meals since the semester started and you know it!” She scolds. “All I’m saying is that I know the food will be great, and I’d rather you see for yourself instead of through Instagram.”
“Fine,” I groan in defeat. “I’ll go, but if it turns out like Get Out, I’m out of there.”
Rachel rolls her eyes.
“I won’t let that happen, minority alliance, right?”
She giggles holding her pinkie out. I’m the one rolling my eyes now, but I link my pinkie with her own. This is a chance to get a load off and travel to another place, meet new people. Rachel might be right, for once in a while.
“In speaking of moms’, I need to let her know that I’m spending the summer in Singapore,” I say with a smirk.
“Tell her you’re going to a wedding,” Nick says as he walks up to the table.
He greets Rachel with a kiss prior to coming over to my side.
“Y/N, how’s my favorite English professor?” he chuckles.
I can’t help but laugh at his attempt to suck up.
“I’m the only one you know, but come here anyway,” I say.
Nick grins and hugs me tightly before pulling away.
“We still down for drinks tonight?” he asks Rachel with a grin.
I rise, noticing when the fluff starts as always. It’s cute, too teeth rottenly cute.
“All right, ok I’ll go,” I say, “oh, yeah Nick, how much is a round trip to Singapore anyway?”
Nick doesn’t answer, only chuckles as if I told a joke.
“What?” I ask.
“Y/N, I’m well off to cover it, trust me.”
…
I always knew Nick Young was right for Rachel, but I didn’t expect him to be rich. Insanely rich, there’s a distinction. People I knew back home saved up for regular air bnbs, working class people. I could never imagine something like this.
Nick’s got his own flight attendants who wear these slender, red traditional Chinese dresses, loads of champagne and two beds.
Of course Rachel is now sprawled out on my bed watching Notting Hill.
“Why this movie, this isn’t even his best movie,” I say.
Rachel giggles and rolls back up into a sitting position.
“You’re just mad I didn’t put on a Tom Hiddleston film,” Rachel sneers.
“Hey, it’s not my fault his accent is much better than Hugh Grants,” I say.
Rachel gasps, “you didn’t!”
“I totally did, and here I thought you’d much prefer your boyfriend’s accent,” I say.
“Don’t tell him that,” Rachel jokes, “he won’t let me live it down.”
“Live what down?” Nick asks, holding two glasses of champagne.
Rachel accepts one, and I decline Nick’s offer.
“I’ll pass,” I say, “I’m not really a champagne drinker.”
“That’s ok Y/N,” Nick says, “I think I heard you say my accent is better than Hugh Grants.”
I can’t help but giggle, Rachel rolls her eyes as Nick rumbles with chuckles.
“Yeah, your accent is definitely up there, why didn’t you tell me your family had points with this airline?” I say, “could have saved me the crummy airbnbs I’ve gotten over the years.”
Nick grins again before taking a swig of his champagne.
“My family’s just well off.”
…
Well off my ass.
Nick’s grandmother’s house isn’t a house, it’s a mansion. With butlers, luscious plants;people with sparkling dresses, dapper suits ; and a giant stuffed tiger. Rachel was worried about everyone staring at her, but all eyes stay on me.
Nick already whisked Rachel away to meet his mother, leaving me alone with the silver trays and the wondering stares.
“Hey! You’re Nick’s personal servant, aren’t you!” One guy hollers.
I throw him a look, but say nothing. They might believe any stereotype, wouldn’t want to give them anymore reason to.
“You all right?” someone asks.
I raise a brow and turn towards the voice.
My face burns at the sight of the olive skinned woman; her jet black hair, ruby colored lip stick and a shiny silver dress. Her accent caught me off guard though. British, like Nick’s, but a bit different.
“Hi, ah–”
She smiles and holds her hand out to me.
“Astrid, Astrid Leong,” she says.
I grin, shake her hand firmly and almost forget my own name.
“Y-Y/N, Y/N Y/L/N,” I say.
“That’s a pretty name,” she notes.
I can’t help but blush. This has got to be a dream.
“Thanks, I-I love your earrings,” I say, trying to keep myself from staring too deeply into her eyes.
Astrid steps a bit closer, putting a hand on my arm.
“You sure? you seem a little flustered,” Astrid says.
I nod sharply.
“Y-Yeah, just all of the lights I got to get used to,” I say, playing it off.
Astrid gives me a careful once over before grinning again.
“All right,” she says, “if you need anything let me know, I can play hero for Nick and Rachel’s friend.”
“How’d you know I came with Nick and Rachel?” I ask.
Astrid giggles while rubbing my arm tenderly.
“I’ve been to this house for years Y/N,” Astrid says, “I know the usual guests and no one looks at it in wonder like you do.”
All I can do is nod and be captivated by Astrid’s voice.
“Y-Yeah, great point, Astrid–”
“Astrid!”
Astrid and I both turn toward a man in a purple suit and glasses.
“Cassian’s calling for you, he wants a story before bed,” he says.
Astrid sighs.
“Mother duty calls I suppose, thank you Ollie,” she says before turning to me. “It was a pleasure Y/N, I’ll see you later, yeah?”
I nod and try not to fall as she squeezed my hand and walk away.
“Wow,” I whisper.
Ollie nods.
“Indeed,” he agrees, “I hardly see women fawn over Astrid like that.”
I turn to him.
“I’m sorry, have we met?” I ask.
“Oliver T’sien,” he says, “I’m the eyes and ears around here.”
I keep an eye on him.
“How do you know Astrid?”
“Well, Astrid and I are Nick’s cousins. My family’s not as well off as the Youngs or Leongs’ but we’re still stable,” he explains, “plus I’m just the rainbow sheep of the family, I’ve gotten used to all of the talk, haven’t you?”
I nod, catching onto his words.
“Family drama can be a pain, but instead of the rainbow sheep, I’m more of a pink, purple and blue one,” I say.
Ollie grins.
“All the more scandalous, can I tell you something about Astrid?” he asks. “It’s nothing bad, I swear.”
I nod, he offers an arm and I take it as we walk.
“Sure,” I say.
Ollie leans close to my ear and whispers, “Astrid’s a divorcee, she’s been divorced for the past year now.”
My heart skips a beat, thank God I wasn’t ogling over a married woman.
“I don’t know if Astrid favors the pink, blue and purple like you, but I’d give it a try,” Ollie says.
I’m not sure how I feel about that.
