Rachel Hackett watches in horror as she gets close enough to the tags for the full information to crawl across her display. She recognizes the service number. She’s memorized six aside from her own in the last three decades. Sister. Husband. Brother-in-law. Niece. Nephew. Son.

SERVICE NO. 5923-AC-2826

MJR SHEPARD, NORAH J.

She doesn’t pay attention to the rest of the information following the service number and name. She barely hears the rest of the team calling out to each other, they’ve found Shepard.

Rachel keeps moving. The pinging quickens to a sustained note. She’s within five meters. She switches to heat vision, turning in a slow circle.

There.

Someone found her.

Norah Jean’s current perception of the world around her was already small, but it shrinks even more when her rescuer gets their hands on her.

Agony.

Then, nothing.

Six weeks after the activation of the Crucible

Once again, Hannah Shepard finds herself staring down at her daughter in a hospital bed, dwarfed by tubes and wires and empty space around her. The sheets are still white. The noise of the machinery keeping her alive is still the same. Some things are different, like the view outside the window. Her hair, buzzed so short you can see every scar on her head, including the newest one, curving from her right eyebrow to disappear over the top of her head. The sheets that flatten out where the rest of her left leg should be. The wedding ring with the dog tags on the bedside table.

That one blindsides her.

There was a time when they’d shared everything with each other. But that was a long time ago, and Norah Jean still lived at home. There certainly wasn’t a war happening across the whole galaxy. It still stings, though, finding out like this, with everything up in the air.

Movement in the corner catches her eye. Rachel stretches, before levering herself out of the uncomfortable hospital chair. She looks like she hasn’t slept in days. Probably hasn’t. The Shepard women never were good at the whole sleeping thing.

“It’s bad, Han.” Rachel stifles a yawn.

“I know. But she- she’s been bad before. She’s pulled through before.” Hannah’s fingers pick at the hem of her untucked uniform shirt.

“You know this isn’t the same. She had better chances back then. Back then her body wasn’t relying on an intricate network of nanotechnology just to keep breathing.”

“You’re going to find Lawson, though? They’re gonna fix it, right?”

“We’re trying.” Rachel lays a hand on Hannah’s shoulder and squeezes. “Let’s find you something to eat.”

House of ashes "Quarry AU" drabble. I'm just trying to brain storm ideas for this AU.

The campfire crackled away as the company of ex-military personnel chatted comfortably together in a circle. Even Salim has calmed down from his original hesitance towards a party after Dar strictly told him to stay inside after the van refused to start. They all tried to repair it, only making it worse. What they would do for Merwin to have decided to show up.

Jason is already on his third beer, and he is definitely getting tipsy at this point. He's laughing louder than necessary, and his southern accent is getting stronger. In Jason's boozy state, he gets an idea.

He takes another swig of his drink as he flaps his other hand to get everyone's attention. "Idea." He tries to speak with a mouth full of alcohol. He swallows with a loud "Ah." of satisfaction. "I know what would make this more interesting." Jason says with a mischievous smile as he rests his bottle on his knee, "truth or dare."

"That doesn't seem like a good idea..." Rachel says with an unsure look on her face.

"C'mon, lighten up, Rachel." Jason groans as he leans his head back. "It's just a bita fun."

"Truth or dare?" Salim asks curiously, tilting his head to the side.

"You've seriously never played?" Nick asks in surprise.

"No. I don't believe this is a common game in Iraq. How do you play?" Salim asks as he puts down his drink at his feet.

"It's easy," Jason begins, shifting to the edge of his seat to get closer to Salim. "You take turns asking people truth or dare. They pick truth, you ask them a question, and they need to answer it 100% honestly. If they pick dare, they need to do whatever you tell them to."

"Who decides who's turn is it?"

"If I asked you, after you do it, it would be your turn, then you ask Eric, and it's his, and so on and so forth." Jason explains with a circular gesture of his hand.

"Ah, I understand now. But, what if someone lies or they won't do the dare?" Salim asks, clearly intrigued by this game.

"Then they're a spoilsport and will be kicked out for not following the ruled." Jason says playfully with an adjustment of his hat.

When they arrive at the meeting site to go find the well, the first person Laura notices is the one she doesn’t recognize. At least, not right away. Mike, Rachel, Jamie, and Brad are waiting for them with flashlights and their normal gear and attire, so she clocks them pretty easily - its the handsome man with them that takes her by surprise. 

He’s a well-built man in his fifties with salt and pepper hair and a scowl on his face. It’s probably the scowl that throws her off. Because when she and Travis get closer and she’s able to look the man fully in the face, she knows instantly who it is she’s looking at, “Jacob?”

I've been thinking up a "The Quarry" AU for house of ashes where the characters of House of Ashes got to work at Hackett's Quarry to give the kids an insight into military training. The characters will have the same personalities (aka, nobody deliberately brakes the car, teen drama is toned down, they all have more skill with weaponry, etc)

Ryan = Jason Kolcheck.

Dylan = Salim Othman (obviously).

Kaitlyn = Clarice Stokes.

Jacob = Eric King

Emma = Rachel King.

Nicolas = Nick Kay (again, for obvious reasons).

Abigail = Joey Gomez (not to ship with anyone, but who knows, I sure as hell don't).

Laura = Nathan Merwin.

These are just rough guidelines for their encounters with the werewolves. Jason, with his killing curiosity to touch things he shouldn't (the fossilised alien) he'd be more likely to investigate Chris' room than Salim, but the bisexual jokes about him, Salim, and Clarice are too good to pass up on.

I'm thinking that this takes place in the same universe as house of ashes just to be like "WEREWOLVES??? THE FUCK??? FIRST VAMPIRES, NOW WEREWOLVES. WHATS NEXT, ZOMBIES???"

I don't watch a lot of shows, mostly I read, listen to music and the news, and read som more... it's kind of in my "name" 😅

When I watch anything , it is mostly YouTube, currently my favorites are Rachel Maksy, Morgan Donner and listening to old Citation Needed episodes by The Technical Difficulties (Tom Scott and 3 friends)

Current obsession:

Horizon zero dawn❤️ and Horizon forbidden west ❤️(I might have a problem....)

- I got the Horizon Zero Dawn coloring book and the Horizon Forbidden West art book 2 weeks ago (already had HZD artbook and the comics, whant more!) Oh, I also own a lot of @godliath digital Ereloy stuff

- I've started making 3 horizon (sort of) original cosplays/costumes (Banuk villager, Oseram brewer and Nora hunter) but I don't plan on them being finished until september 2024. I just need my body to work and get some energy again.. (breathing without pain would be nice, freaking asthma)

- Replaying HZD with Frozen Wild, I "gotta catch them all" to every thing including all the datapoints (so close now!) I started doing the same with HFW before Burning Shores, but somehow I lost a powercell in the base and a crate in a ruin so I need to start over😓

- Re-reading every thing Ereloy (my favorit ship with my favorit boy Erend 🥰) on AO3 + a few more in the Horizon 'vers

- Just startede with a few drawings to test ideas for a second Ereloy painting (still need get back that energy, long covid sucks big time🤬)

Currently reading:

I read a lot, like when my body hurts too much, when my brain needs a break, when I'm bored, sometimes when I work and Ialso read for fun.. On average 3 hours (or more) a day, often 300+ pages in a day and multiple books at the same time, and before I found AO3 that meant 500 or more books in a year.

Personally, it’s how he held onto Laura for so long after she disappeared, his memories of her crystal clear to a near uncanny point, making it so he could hold on to her even without her physical presence.
